Threading is a technique for precise hair removal which is why it is typically only used for facial hair such as eyebrows or upper lip hair. Threading differs from waxing in that threading uses a thin (cotton or polyester) thread which is doubled over, twisted, and then rolled over areas of unwanted hair, whereas waxing uses a sticky substance to adhere to and remove hairs. Unlike waxing where entire areas of hair are removed at once, threading can be extremely exact in removing one hair, or a short row or hairs, at a time. 

There are two different techniques for threading: the hand method and the mouth method. Each method is characterized by where the thread is stabilized during the threading session. 

Threading allows for a defined and precise shape and can create better definition for eyebrows. It is also used as a method of removing unwanted hair on the entire face and upper lip area. Threading is not a good method for removing hair on arms or legs, as there is too much to remove.

Eyebrow Threading

Threading is a popular form of facial hair removal that originated in Eastern countries such as Egypt and India. Threading removes individuals hairs from the hair follicle and is characterized by the precision and speed of the aesthetic professionals that perform this treatment.

Permanent hair removal method which uses a tiny needle with an electric current to kill hair follicles.

The only permanent form of hair removal is electrolysis. While other methods of hair removal such as laser hair removal or IPL treatments may be known for making unwanted hair disappear, these treatments only slow down the growth of hair. Some individuals may turn to treatments such as waxing or threading for their cost effectiveness, however the monetary savings will never amount to permanent hair removal. 

There are three different forms of electrolysis, the first being galvanic. Galvanic hair removal uses a chemical reaction to destroy hair. The fine probe used to slide into the hair follicle is as thin as a piece of hair. The galvanic method utilizes a direct current through the probe to create a reaction to help the hair break away from other components, never to join again.

It is similar to an electrical current in a chemistry experiment that separates salt water into its basic components. As such, the galvanic method uses the saline base of hair follicles to help sodium hydroxide, hydrogen gas, and chlorine gas form, with the sodium hydroxide assisting in the destruction of the hair follicle.

The galvanic process can be slow and time-consuming, taking approximately two to three minutes to get rid of one hair follicle. It's for this reason that the method isn't used as often and works best on thick and coarse hair, like body or male facial hair.

The second method of electrolysis is thermolysis. Like the name implies, the thermolysis method works to deliver heat energy to the hair follicle to get rid of it. Is electrolysis technically defined as thermolysis? No, because thermolysis doesn't use two electrodes, an external circuit, or electrolytic cell to send electric currents. Nevertheless, thermolysis is electrolysis in the vernacular of the cosmetic procedure all the same, when people discuss this second method of performing electrolysis.

Instead, thermolysis creates heat at the base of the hair follicle when the needle sends high-frequency vibrations to the hair follicle and produces heat that takes only seconds to remove each hair.

Galvanic electrolysis hair removal is more effective than thermolysis, but the thermolysis method is faster, with the electrocoagulation of thermolysis working best on fine hair destruction. 

Third method of electroylsis combines the previous two techniques into what is known as the "blend" method. The blend method takes the best of both worlds and uses the galvanic electrolysis and thermolysis methods blended together as one to remove hair. Currents create sodium hydroxide while vibrations cause heat energy to be disbursed, taking only seven seconds or so to destroy each hair.

Also known as the "dual-action method," the blend method is quicker than the galvanic process, and more effective than thermolysis alone.

Electrolysis

Electrolysis is the only FDA-approved permanent hair removal method. This procedure can be used to treat unwanted hair growth with either chemicals or electricity.

Utilizes a concentrated beam of light to remove unwanted hair and delays hair growth for a long period of time.

Before laser hair removal, most individuals have tried a myriad of other treatments to remove unwanted hair from their face and body. Many people have gotten waxed, had threading, or tried  electrolysis, but for reasons ranging from cost, to time commitment, the masses are turning to laser hair removal for long term treatment to reduce hair growth. 

Due to the selective absorption of photons of laser light, typically individuals with a combination of darker, coarser hair and light complexions have the most success with laser hair removal treatments. However, there are select lasers that have shown limited results for individuals with dark hair and dark complexions. 

During treatment, patients are required to wear special protective goggles to shield the eyes from the laser beam. The area may be shaved if there is extensive hair growth. Before the session begins a topical anesthetic may be applied to the skin to reduce any discomfort during treatment. When the procedure begins the practitioner will press a hand-held laser instrument to the skin. Depending on the type of laser, a cooling device on the tip of the instrument or a cooling gel might be utilized to not only protect the skin but reduce the risk of burns and irritations. Duration of a session will depend on the size of the area being treated, from as little as 10 minutes up to one hour. Number of treatments will depend on the area being treated, the characteristics of the hair, and the tolerance of the individual to the discomfort of treatment and adherence to aftercare instructions.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a temporary hair removal solution that removes hair and then significantly delays future regrowth.

Targets the melanin in hair using a high-energy light to achieve long -term hair reduction.

During an IPL treatment, a hand-held device delivers a visible, broad-spectrum pulse of light, generally in the visible spectral range of 400 to 1200 nm. This light targets the difference in melanin from the hair shaft and the skin complexion, making IPL an ideal treatment for individuals with a high contrast in hair and skin color.  As the light is absorbed, the bulb and most of the hair shaft is heated, which causes the hair-producing papilla to be destroyed. Number and duration of IPL treatments for hair removal will vary based on the individual and size of the area being treated.

IPL shares some similarities with laser hair removal treatments in that they both use light to heat and destroy components of the unwanted hair. IPL is not able to heat the hair as much as laser energy and will typically take more treatments than laser to produce similar results. Since IPL produces a variety of light wavelengths, the strength of IPL is more diffused and less powerful than laser energy. However, if waxing isn't providing you with long enough results and electrolysis is too expensive, IPL treatments may be right for you.

Intense pulsed light (IPL) for unwanted hair is a semi-permanent hair removal solution that uses high-energy light laser treatments to progressively damage the hair follicle.

Vaniqa is available by prescription to reduce unwanted facial hair in women. Unlike chemical depilatory creams which dissolve the hair follicle structure, Vaniqa helps to slow down hair growth and needs to be used in conjunction with other hair removal processes such as shaving or tweezing. 

Vaniqa is typically applied twice daily with at least 8 hours between each application. Vaniqa is only indicated for use on the face and chin. Do not apply the cream on other areas of the body. Before using the product, remove any unwanted facial hair using your preferred method of hair removal. Be sure to wait at least 5 minutes between shaving or tweezing before applying Vaniqa. Wash hands before and after use. Apply a thin layer of cream to areas with unwanted facial hair, completely rub in the product and leave on for 4 hours. While a full head of lush, beautiful hair is ideal for both men and women, the opposite is true when it comes to the rest of our bodies. In fact, while hair loss is a huge concern when it comes to the hair on our heads, our society goes to great lengths to remove body hair completely—or at least to keep it well under control, and has done so for decades.

Depilatory creams are a form of temporary hair removal. Like waxing and threading, depilatory creams can provide longer lasting results as opposed to tweezing or shaving. While typically available as a cream product, depilatories are also available as lotions, gels, and aerosols. 

Before using a depilatory cream, be sure to perform an allergy test in a small, discreet area. The chemicals within the product that are used to break down the hair structure can also irritate the skin and cause skin reactions such as redness, itching, and bumps. The skin should be cleansed, the product applied, and left on for the suggested amount of time. Once the allotted time has elapsed, the product is rubbed away along with unwanted hairs. Wear loose fitting clothing and do not scratch the treated area afterwards for best results.

Depilatory Creams

Depilatory creams are hair removal creams containing chemical agents used as topical solutions for unwanted hair growth and hair removal.

Performed with various types of wax to remove hair. Some variations include hot, hard, and even chocolate wax.

During a waxing appointment, the skin will be cleansed and prepped for the wax to be applied. Once the waxing service is completed, a calming serum, lotion, or ointment is typically applied to soothe any irritation or redness. 

There are many different forms of wax for hair removal. The two main types of wax are either soft or hard. 

Soft wax is applied to the skin in the direction of the hair growth, a cloth strip is applied on top of the wax, left to harden, and then removed. The process is repeated until all of the hair in the area is removed. Soft wax adheres to skin more than hard wax, making it better suited to remove fine hairs. However, since the wax adheres to the skin, the wax cannot be applied to the same spot twice because it removes layers of dead skin, leaving the skin susceptible to irritation. 

Hard wax is applied to the skin, quickly dries, and is almost immediately removed from the area. The process is repeated until all of the hair in the area is removed. Hard wax adheres to hairs and not to the skin, meaning wax can be applied multiple times to the same area if hairs are missed. 

An alternative to waxing is threading which removes hairs individually. Individuals who desire a more permanent form of hair removal may instead receive laser hair removal treatments or electrolysis sessions. When searching for a form of hair removal that work best for you, it is typically advised to discontinue all other forms of hair removal to ensure success with the method chosen.

Since finasteride reduces the production of androgens, which are male sex hormones, side effects from taking the medication may include decreased libido and sexual stamina. Alternative medications for hair loss include dutasteride and tofacitinib. 

Typically, 1 dose is taken per day orally of finasteride to help hair loss. Results can take anywhere between 3-6 months to show. Continued use of the drug is necessary to maintain results.

Finasteride

Finasteride is prescription oral medication approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia).

Off-label treatment of male and female pattern hair loss and is in clinical trials for its effectiveness.

Tofacitinib is a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor. JAKs are enzymes that work within the immune system and other cells to transmit signals that influence basic cell functions. By inhibiting JAKs in immune cells, Xeljanz can interfere with the immune processes which attack hair follicles causing hair loss. This pill seeks to reverse hair loss caused by alopecia areata which is a common autoimmune skin disease, causing hair loss on the scalp, face and sometimes on other areas of the body.

Tofacitinib and similar medications like dutasteride are not primarily used for treatment of hair loss but have shown to decrease hair minimization. Tofacitinib is available in 5 mg tablets and the recommended dose is 5 mg twice daily. Take the medication as directed by the provider and do not increase intake if a dose is missed.

Tofacitinib

Tofacitinib, brand name Xeljanz by Pfizer, is a janus kinase inhibitor used as a non-FDA approved treatment of hair loss due to alopecia areata.

Used as off-label treatment of male and female pattern hair loss. Studies have shown it more effective than finasteride.

The primary indication for dutasteride is to treat urinary retention issues and enlarged prostates. However, the drug works by inhibiting both type I and type II 5a- reductase—which are most known for conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT shrinks hair follicles and its presence is a known cause of balding. Other medications for hair restoration include tofacitinib, which is primarily used as a treatment for arthritis. 

All dutasteride doses tested (0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 2.5 mg) and finasteride 5 mg were significantly better than placebo, but only dutasteride at a 2.5 mg daily dose showed statistically greater hair counts compared to finasteride. Typically, 1 dose is taken per day orally. Results can take anywhere between 3-6 months to show.

Dutasteride, brand name Avodart, is a non-FDA approved oral medication treatment for male and female pattern hair loss.

Hair restoration treatment that uses low level laser therapy and LED light to stimulate hair follicles for thicker hair.

Thinning hair, receding hairlines, and hair loss in general can have a great impact on the self esteem of both men and women. There are a number of hair restoration treatments available to treat hair loss from topical products such as Rogaine, to prescription medications such as Propecia. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) contains several cytokines and growth factors. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections for Hair Loss

PRP injections are a non-surgical hair loss treatment for hair restoration, hair follicle health, and scalp hair growth.

Neograft uses a partly robotic method of follicular unit extraction which seeks to reverse hair loss created by thinning hair, bald spots and receding hairlines. Other options for hair transplant include the entirely robotic ARTAS system or the strip harvesting method. The NeoGraft hair procedure is a one-day, outpatient procedure that requires only local anesthesia. Most patients experience very little or no discomfort during and after surgery. The scalp will be treated with a local anesthetic, and if needed and previously discussed, the hair in the donor area will be cut short before the procedure begins. Patients rest comfortably, watch TV or nap during their hair procedure.

The extraction procedure is simple but may take some time. Using a wand powered by pneumatic pressure, the Neograft removes donor hair from the back of the head. This is the area where the hair follicles resist falling out if male pattern baldness is the problem. For females, the hair is typically extracted from other areas where it can safely be harvested. The surgeon will create recipient sites in the proper orientation, angle, and direction according to the hair transplantation plan, which would be individualized during the consultation. Finally, the follicular units are carefully separated by size before transplanting the grafts into balding or thinning areas of the scalp. Each extracted graft is meticulously harvested and individually implanted to ensure the best results.

NeoGraft

NeoGraft is a semi-automated hair transplant system which facilitates the harvesting of follicles during a follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplant, improving the accuracy and speed over previously used manual extraction instruments.

A method that removes a strip of hair that is then dissected into smaller segments and implanted into the treated area.

Strip harvesting for hair transplant is a safe and effective way to treat patients with balding or thinning hair. Unfortunately, this method does create a scar from the dissected donor area of the scalp. Alternatively, the follicular unit extraction (FUE) method does not require a piece of scalp to be harvested before transplanting individual hairs. Your hair transplant surgeon will help you determine which method would be best for your individual needs.

When designing the strip to be harvested there are a few guidelines to follow. The upper boundary of the strip should be at least 2 cm below where crown thinning is predicted to occur. The lower boundary should be about 2 cm above the nape of the neck. The maximum length usually ranges from 24 to 30 cm depending on the size of the candidate's head. Depending on the donor scalp laxity, a safe strip width will generally vary from 10 to 25 mm.
 
Once the appropriate dimensions are determined, the donor site hair is trimmed to a length of 2 to 3 mm. There is no need to trim beyond the strip as longer hair above the harvest site is valuable to hide the incision. Next, the upper and lower edges of the donor site are marked. The area is then injected with local anesthesia containing epinephrine. For the donor strip technique, it is extremely important to visualize the hair follicles and remain parallel to the existing hair shafts in order to avoid transection. The upper and lower incisions are then made and the strip is sharply dissected from the underlying tissue, staying in a plane just beneath the follicles. The incision is then closed without tension. Occasionally, telogen effluvium (temporary thinning of the hair) occurs at the donor site however it should resolve in 4 to 6 months.

Tiny incisions are then made in the recipient area in an irregular pattern that mimics the way hair grows naturally. The micrografts that have been dissected from the donor area are then carefully placed in these tiny incisions. They are placed in varying densities, with the smallest one- to two-hair grafts placed in the front of the hairline, and three- to four-hair grafts placed behind them. Immediately after the transplant, there will be hundreds of tiny incisions with short hair stubble sticking out from the new grafts. In two and a half to three months, the new hair will start growing in, and will grow at the normal rate of one-half to one inch per month thereafter.

For eyebrows the same process is performed but with a smaller graft. Although they vary in size depending on the number of grafts needed, a graft typically varies in length and width from about 3 to 6 cm and 10 to 15 mm, respectively. Special care is taken to only transplant single grafts, transplant in the direction of the hair growth of the eyebrows with respect to the hair's natural curl and wave, and transplanting at an angle that is very flat to the skin.

When combating the signs of aging, efforts should not only be focused on the face, but the hands as well. A liposuction procedure must be performed first in order to collect the fat to graft to the hands. Fat is typically collected from the hips, thighs, or stomach area but can be taken from anywhere on the body that has excess fatty tissue deposits. The donor area will be cleansed and anesthetized before a small incision is made for a cannula to be inserted. The area will be infiltrated with a tumescent fluid that is comprised of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine. Fat will then be dislodged and suctioned into a container. Once complete, the donor area will be bandaged in a compression garment to help reduce bruising, swelling, and drain any remaining fluid. The collected fat will then be purified of any contaminants in preparation for grafting. 

A small needle will make a pilot hole at the wrist for a cannula to be inserted. Once inserted, the cannula will distribute the collected fat to any volume deficient area of the hand. More fat will be injected into the hands to compensate for an expected amount of reabsorption into the body, anywhere from 30-50%. When the procedure is complete, the cannula will be removed. The hand may be massaged to ensure even distribution of the fat.
