About Emilio Couret, DDS
Dr. Couret has being a top-rated dentist in Chicago, IL, since 2001. In his own words below, he shares his heartfelt story about what inspired his career choice. The number one question my patients ask me is why I decided to become a dentist. From a very early age, my father felt it was important to teach me about the value of hard work. My dad owned Shell gas stations and started bringing me to work when I was five. By age seven, I was pumping gas. I remember when I would run outside to greet a customer, my father would remind me to “look enthusiastic, pick up your feet, and smile!” He wanted to give every person who pulled into the station an amazing customer experience, and instilled in me the goal to always provide the highest level of customer service. I loved every minute of working at the gas station. During the many years that I worked with my father, the customers would often give me tips for working so hard to go above and beyond simply pumping gas. My early experience taught me that I wanted a career working directly with people. When I went on to college at Indiana University, it made sense for me to study business, since I wanted to have a job serving customers. I envisioned myself as part of a small business dealing with the customers directly, just like my dad did at the gas station. I noticed, however, that all my college friends were interested in getting jobs with big companies like General Electric or Johnson & Johnson. At that point, I began to panic, as I had not yet figured out my own career path, and I didn’t want to end up working for some large, impersonal company. One day in college, I needed to see a dentist, so I asked around and got a recommendation to see a dentist named Dr. Frank Munoz. When I walked into his office, I knew it was going to be a completely different experience than I had ever had from any dentist I had been to before. The staff were welcoming, friendly, and greeted me by name. They seemed like they all loved their jobs, and there was a happy vibe throughout the office. I could also hear Dr. Munoz laughing with a patient in the hallway. During my appointment with Dr. Munoz, he spent a great deal of time to get to know me and to learn the reason for my visit. For the first time, I felt a healthcare provider truly listened to me. Then his hygienist gave me the best teeth cleaning that I had ever received in my life! Perhaps because my grandfather had been a dentist and the idea was somehow embedded in my subconscious, but on the day that I left that dental office, I decided to become a dentist myself. I knew I wanted to make my patients feel like Frank Munoz had made me feel. Upon graduation from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, I began to build my dream office. This was not done alone – I have had a great team of wonderful people who have become an integral part of my practice over the years. Most importantly, I could not have achieved my dream without the support of my wife, Sarah, who has always been my biggest cheerleader.
