About Gunnar Fisher, DDS
Baltimore dentist, Dr. Gunnar Fisher has been practicing dentistry for over 41 years. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland College Park and earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Maryland at Baltimore in 1975. Dr. Fisher was commissioned as a Lt. in the US Navy, where he served as a dental officer at the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in Washington D.C. followed by a tour of duty aboard the aircraft carrier USS Independence. After active duty, he was one of only eight dental lieutenants that were asked to remain in the Navy when the need for officers decreased. During his early years in private practice, as dentistry began to quickly evolve, he recognized a need to improve his skills. First, he completed the original curriculum at the L.D. Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education, an internationally renowned school for postgraduate dental studies. In the 1990’s, Dr. Fisher continued his quest for knowledge and began attending the Kois Center in Seattle, known for its training of dental instructors. He was nominated as a Distinguished Mentor in 2000, a position he held for 11 years. Still not satisfied, he studied for and earned his Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry. He is the only dentist in the mid-Atlantic area to have to have accomplished these three distinctions. A “Baltimore’s Best Dentist elected by his peers” followed in 2011, 2012 and 2015. Through innovative techniques like non-surgical periodontal (gum) treatment, laser dentistry, DNA testing for dental diseases and minimally invasive restorative work, Dr. Fisher has strived to stay current in his field for the benefit of his patients. Recognizing the need to share his knowledge and experience, he has been a participant in the Donated Dental Service program of Maryland for over 20 years and has volunteered to help the less fortunate at the Mission of Mercy, the University of Maryland, and the Academy of General Dentistry Foundation. Dr. Fisher comes from a family of teachers and, as such, was brought up to place a high value on education. He explains dental concerns in layman’s terms so they can easily understand and listens to their wishes. He has guided hundreds of his patients through their choices simply by listening to what they want and mutually deciding on a plan that they feel is right for them.
