There are areas on the body and face where fat serves a purpose, and plenty of places where we stop at nothing to get rid of it. Ever since the advent of injectable fat reducers, the options have continued to expand with new treatments emerging. But before you take the plunge on a fat-dissolving injectable treatment, there's plenty to know, as well as a few to choose from to help you reach your goals.

Most of us have a love-hate relationship with fat. We want more of it where it seems to waste away with age, like the face, and less of it where it accumulates over time, like the thighs and abdomen. Although fat serves a purpose, Americans have never been shy about investing in surgeries, minimally invasive procedures, and now injectable fat-dissolving options to rid select areas of it once and for all.

For years, the most reliable way to get rid of fat without resorting to liposuction or other options has been Kybella. However, since its uses are limited, more solutions have naturally become available. The newest one: PCDC fat dissolvers, which is like the OG but a little more versatile, making it usable on more than just one area. In this article, we dive deep into the world of fat-dissolving injectables and the innovative PCDC option, providing the nitty-gritty details of this off-label treatment that's quickly becoming the go-to method for eliminating stubborn fat once and for all.

WHAT IS PCDC FAT DISSOVLER?

PCDC fat dissolvers are a non-surgical injectable treatment that breaks up stubborn fat on the body and face. Sometimes called PCDC lipolysis or even lipodissolve, PCDC injections rely on a combination of two naturally occurring compounds, phosphatidylcholine (PC) and deoxycholate (DC), to help break down fat cells and then naturally eliminate them from localized areas that are unresponsive to diet and exercise.

AEDIT Founder and board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. William Kennedy, MD, says this fat-dissolving approach began in Europe during the ’90s, where it was first used for medical purposes, like treating fat embolisms and high cholesterol, but was quickly refined when doctors saw its potential for body contouring.

"Today, PCDC is a great option for patients looking to fine-tune their shape without downtime or surgery," he says. "It's about convenience and control—patients can ease into the treatment on their terms, without putting their lives on hold. That flexibility is a big draw in today's fast-paced world." However, it is essential to note that, like other fat-melting and dissolving treatments available, PCDC fat dissolvers are not a weight loss solution but rather a non-invasive method to contour specific areas of the body more easily.

IS PCDC FDA-APPROVED?

Currently, PCDC injections are not FDA-approved because they haven't undergone the entire clinical trial process for fat reduction. While Dr. Williams says that the ingredients in PCDC injections are used in other medical contexts, this specific combination has not been formally evaluated for safety and effectiveness in the United States. "The only similar product with approval is Kybella, and that's just for under-chin fat." Kybella works similarly to PCDC fat dissolvers but with some differences.

PCDC is an off-label treatment (meaning it does not hold FDA approval, but many professionals use it safely). Numerous injectors and aesthetic practitioners find it to be an effective solution for non-surgical fat reduction, helping to improve the contour of areas such as the under the chin, abdomen, back, thighs, and upper arms. Although Dr. Williams says it is unlikely that FDA approval for PCDC fat injections will come soon, he adds that the aesthetic community hasn't rallied behind a large-scale, FDA-compliant trial. "Plus, safety concerns, like inconsistent product mixes from compounding pharmacies and reports of complications, mean regulators and medical societies are cautious."

HOW DO FAT DISSOLVING INJECTIONS WORK?

All types of fat-dissolving injections work by destroying unwanted fat cells in a particular area over time. "Deoxycholate disrupts the fat cell membrane and phosphatidylcholine helps emulsify the fat so that the body naturally flushes it out," explains Dr. Williams. "It's a gradual process, usually done over several sessions, but it's minimally invasive and doesn't require surgery."

PCDC fat dissolvers, often categorized as Kybella alternatives, don't work on every spot where hard-to-get-rid-of fat exists. Dr. Williams says they are most effective in smaller, targeted areas, such as under the chin, the lower belly, love handles, inner thighs, bra bulge, and even above the knees. "PCDC targets localized fat pockets; small to medium areas are ideal, not large-volume fat reduction,” he shares. "Larger zones can be treated, but usually in sections and over multiple sessions to ensure safety and natural-looking results. It's more of a precision tool than a blanket solution."

Equally as important as treating the right areas is treating the right patient. Patient selection ensures realistic expectations, safer outcomes, and more natural-looking results. According to Dr. Williams, the ideal candidate for PCDC injections is close to their target weight but struggles with small, localized areas of stubborn fat that don't respond to diet or exercise. "Good skin elasticity is also important because while the injections reduce fat, they don't tighten loose skin."

ARE PCDC INJECTIONS SAFE?

PCDC injections are safe when performed by a medically trained provider, but it's essential to understand that PCDC fat dissolvers are an off-label treatment, even though their ingredients are medically recognized. "While many medspas use PCDC injections as Kybella alternatives, as with any elective injectable treatment, there is the risk of serious side effects, risks, and complications, which is why a trained and educated aesthetic professional should only perform off-label aesthetic treatments and procedures," Dr. William says. "When done correctly, the results can be impressive. But in the wrong hands, the risk of complications increases."

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF PCDC?

Most people tolerate PCDC injections well, but common side effects, such as temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness, and firmness at the injection site, can occur after each injection session. Dr. Williams adds that some patients may also experience redness, itching, or mild numbness. More serious but rare complications can include uneven fat loss, nodules or lumps under the skin, prolonged inflammation, and, in rare cases, tissue necrosis if the solution is injected too superficially or into the wrong tissue layer. "There's also a risk of nerve injury, especially in sensitive areas like under the chin (when using PCDC for chin fat), which is why it's critical to see an experienced, medically trained provider who understands facial and body anatomy."

IS PCDC THE SAME AS KYBELLA?

When weighing PCDC vs. Kybella and deciding which one is right for you, it's important to understand that PCDC injections and Kybella aren't the same; however, there are similarities between the two. While both injectable treatments reduce hard-to-get-rid-of fat with deoxycholic acid, there are several differences between PCDC vs. Kybella to be aware of.

  • Kybella is FDA-approved for the treatment of submental fat under the chin. PCDC injections are an off-label treatment used to target areas with persistent fat.

  • Kybella uses a purified, standardized form of deoxycholic acid, whereas PCDC utilizes it in combination with phosphatidylcholine. PCDC is also compounded, and Dr. Williams says its compositions can vary depending on the provider or pharmacy.

  • PCDC injections are a generic option that is more affordable than Kybella. It can also be used to treat more areas of fat than Kybella.

Both Kybella and PCDC injections aim to achieve the same goal of non-surgically reducing unwanted fat in specific areas through a series of treatments. Both treatments yield permanent results for a more contoured appearance.

HOW MUCH DOES PCDC COST VS. KYBELLA?

When deciding whether PCDC or Kybella is right for you, consider the cost of each treatment option. “Generally, PCDC injections are more budget-friendly, with sessions typically ranging from $250 to $800 depending on the area and provider,” says Dr. Williams. “On the other hand, Kybella averages around $1,200 to $1,800 per session, or sometimes higher.”

Since each person's goals are unique, it's best to schedule a consultation to determine the exact treatment areas, the amount of product needed to achieve those goals, and the number of sessions required. "Of course, the total cost for either treatment depends on how many sessions a patient needs, which can range anywhere from two to six," Dr. Williams shares. "So, while PCDC often comes at a lower price point, it's important to look at the full treatment plan, not just the per-session cost."

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SEE RESULTS FROM PCDC?

PCDC injections are effective, but they're not a miracle overnight. Dr. Williams says, on average, it takes three to four weeks to start seeing changes, with optimal results typically appearing around six to 12 weeks after the final injection session.

Keep in mind that two to four injection sessions spaced several weeks apart are also necessary to reap the results. “The key here is patience and consistency,” Dr. William says. “The treated fat doesn’t return, but the process relies on your body clearing it out steadily.”

THE BOTTOM LINE

While Kybella may have been the first fat-dissolving injection to put non-surgical fat reduction on the map, several options are now available that offer similar results at a lower price tag. Regardless of whether you opt for PCDC fat dissolvers or Kybella, these fat-dissolving injections are changing the way unwanted fat is targeted to improve contours and achieve a more streamlined appearance. At the end of the day, aesthetic medicine continues to evolve and prevail, and the future of what we will see in the world of PCDC injections and fat removers is probably in its infancy, with more treatments likely to evolve in the future.
