## **HOW DO FAT DISSOLVING INJECTIONS WORK?**
All types of fat-dissolving injections work by destroying unwanted fat cells in a particular area over time. "Deoxycholate disrupts the fat cell membrane and phosphatidylcholine helps emulsify the fat so that the body naturally flushes it out," explains Dr. Williams. "It's a gradual process, usually done over several sessions, but it's [minimally invasive](https://aedit.com/aedition/the-most-affordable-non-invasive-cosmetic-procedures) and doesn't require surgery."

PCDC fat dissolvers, often categorized as Kybella alternatives, don't work on every spot where hard-to-get-rid-of fat exists. ## **ARE PCDC INJECTIONS SAFE?**

PCDC injections are safe when performed by a medically trained provider, but it's essential to understand that PCDC fat dissolvers are an off-label treatment, even though their ingredients are medically recognized. ## **WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF PCDC?**

Most people tolerate PCDC injections well, but common side effects, such as temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness, and firmness at the injection site, can occur after each injection session. Dr. Williams adds that some patients may also experience redness, itching, or mild numbness. More serious but rare complications can include uneven fat loss, nodules or lumps under the skin, prolonged inflammation, and, in rare cases, tissue [necrosis](https://aedit.com/aedition/fat-necrosis-after-cosmetic-surgery) if the solution is injected too superficially or into the wrong tissue layer. When weighing PCDC vs. Kybella and deciding which one is right for you, it's important to understand that PCDC injections and Kybella aren't the same; however, there are similarities between the two. PCDC injections are effective, but they're not a miracle overnight. Dr. Williams says, on average, it takes three to four weeks to start seeing changes, with optimal results typically appearing around six to 12 weeks after the final injection session.

## **WHAT IS A "SNATCHED" JAWLINE?**

It was a bit of a surprise for us to learn that the slang word “snatched” actually originated from [New York City drag culture](https://www.dictionary.com/e/slang/snatched/) back in the 90’s. Now that the term has become more mainstream, it’s most commonly used to compliment someone’s appearance. It can be used to describe someone’s outfit, makeup, hair, or a physical feature, like a “snatched” waist or jawline. 

So, what exactly defines a “snatched” jawline? NYC-based board-certified dermatologist [Brendan Camp, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/brendan-camp-md-34645), says that today’s beauty standards consider a sharp but tapered jawline desirable for women while a square or wide-set jawline is considered more masculine. 

While many beauty trends are fleeting, research points to there being real benefits of a defined jawline. According to a [recent study](https://www.library.hbs.edu/working-knowledge/face-value-do-certain-physical-features-help-people-get-ahead), people with thin jawlines were viewed as more charismatic and less aggressive. 

“The jawline is not simply defined by the mandible. There is an interplay between submental fat, jowls, skin laxity, skin quality, and the platysma (neck) muscle that influence the appearance of the jawline,” Dr. Camp says. “Jawline treatments can improve overall facial balance, improving the appearance of symmetry.”

## **NON-INVASIVE JAWLINE TREATMENTS**

### **Masseter Botox**

Botox can smooth away fine lines and wrinkles, and it also can help temporarily slim the jawline. The muscles along the posterior jaw can become enlarged from overuse, especially among those with temporomandibular joint dysfunction (a.k.a TMJ). Botox blocks the platysma muscle’s ability to contract, reducing the muscle size over time. Treating this muscle can affect how it rests along the mandible to provide more shape in the appearance of the bone, says Dr. Camp. While Botox is extremely effective in re-contouring the face, injections are needed every three to four months, which can become expensive and time-consuming.

### **Dermal Filler**

Since dermal filler mimics the appearance of bone, Dr. Camp says they can be placed along the jawline to accentuate the shape of the mandible. In doing so, they better define the transition between face and neck. 

### **Radio Frequency (RF)**

Skin laxity, or saggy skin, can hide the contours of the jaw bone. To tighten loose skin around the face, a lot of doctors like RF. These treatments rely on advanced technology to target deeper layers of the skin. # **INVASIVE JAWLINE PROCEDURES**

### **Neck lift**

For patients with significant skin laxity, Dr. Shafer says there is no way around needing a lower face or neck lift. The procedure removes excess skin and fat, which is a great way to redefine the jawline. But, depending on the individual’s face structure, they might opt for an additional procedure to achieve their desired look. 

“Choosing which treatment or treatments depends on the patient's skeletal anatomy, tissue thickness, and degree of laxity,” says Dr. Shafer. “For a weak chin or jawline we often need to augment with a chin implant or structural injectables such as Volux.”

### **Renuvion and Mini Liposuction**

When a neck lift is not indicated, Dr. Shafer says the best procedure for defining the jawline is Renuvion plasma tissue tightening in conjunction with mini liposuction of the neck. It’s minimally invasive (i.e. downtime of a few days or weeks), but it can provide really powerful results that can last years.

According to Dr. Kennedy, “buccal fat pad removal is ideal for patients with naturally fuller faces who desire a more sculpted look." However, he says it’s important to be cautious. "If someone already has a lean face or is prone to significant weight loss, removing buccal fat could lead to a gaunt appearance over time. The results are permanent, but if a patient gains weight, some fullness may return” Dr. Kennedy advises.

### **Chin Augmentation**

So, what does that actually mean in terms of what you can expect in the days, weeks, and months after treatment?

## **The First 48 Hours After Surgery**
The first few days after virtually any surgery are the most crucial from a recovery standpoint, and the same is true for a neck lift. Depending on the preference of the surgeon and patient, the procedure can be performed under [general anesthesia](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-anesthesia) or ‘awake.’ During an [awake neck lift](https://aedit.com/procedure/awake-neck-lift), a so-called conscious sedation or twilight anesthesia with regional or local anesthetics are utilized. 

The type of anesthesia used will impact how you feel immediately after surgery. “If the surgery was fairly lengthy and required general anesthesia, patients may require a day or two to feel recovered from the anesthesia,” says [Thuy-Van Tina Ho, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/thuyvan-ho-md-25248), a double board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon and founder of [Tina Ho MD Facial Plastic Surgery](https://www.drtinaho.com/) in Philadelphia. Those lingering effects include nausea, drowsiness, and general malaise.

Because neck lifts are outpatient procedures, “patients go home the same day,” Dr. Ho shares. She typically places drains at the conclusion of the surgery and has her patients wear a head and neck [compression dressing](https://aedit.com/aedition/benefits-of-compression-garments-after-cosmetic-surgery) that is freshened up the next day. “I see patients the following day for drain check and dressing change,” she notes.

A neck lift can be performed to reduce skin laxity, tighten the underlying musculature, remove excess fat, or a combination of the three. Needless to say, some patients require more correction than others, and this plays a role in the healing process. [Swelling](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-minimize-swelling-after-cosmetic-surgery) and [bruising](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-prevent-bruising-after-lasers-filler-botox) in the face and neck are the two most common side effects of the surgery, and the extent of it depends, in part, on “how deep a dissection occurs,” says [Michele Koo, MD](https://drmichelekoo.com/), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in St. Louis, MO. The depth “is determined by how much excess skin and fat the patient has,” she adds. Additionally, you may also have a headache that feels similar to a sinus headache. 

Yes, you are going to want to take it very easy for a few days, but surgeons don’t recommend full-on bed rest. “Getting up to go to the bathroom is ok,” says [Smita Ramanadham, MD](https://www.instagram.com/thedrsmita/?hl=en), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in New Jersey. When you are in bed, avoid laying fully horizontally. “We ask that patients sleep on [two or three pillows](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-pillows-for-plastic-sugery-recovery-healing) or in a recliner, so the neck is above the heart level,” she says. 

Oh, and if you’re curious about how getting a neck lift in tandem with a facelift might affect the recovery process, Dr. Ho says there is usually “not a significant difference” aside from “more swelling and bruising.”

## **Pain Management After Neck Lift Surgery**
“Patients may require [pain medication](https://aedit.com/aedition/opioid-crisis-plastic-surgery-recovery-pain-management) to help control their pain or discomfort,” Dr. Ho says, and your surgeon will prescribe accordingly. In her practice, Dr. Ramanadham typically offers about three days of prescription medication before her patients switch over to over-the-counter options like Tylenol.

Pain is obviously subjective, but it may encourage you to hear that, according to Dr. Koo, “there isn’t that much” of it after a neck lift. It’s common to feel pressure or a dull ache around the head and neck, and you may get hit with twinges of pain when trying to sleep on your side. But, overall, she says the level of discomfort is manageable for most people.

Believe it or not, she finds that patients often feel uncomfortable as a result of the bandages, not the surgery itself. “You can expect to have some type of compression wrap around your full head and underneath your chin,” Dr. Koo explains. “For people who might be a little claustrophobic, that might be a little intimidating.” The wrap will stay on – though your doctor may remove some padding – for the following four to five days, and you should still wear it at home for at least another two weeks. You’ll receive specific instructions from your provider on the timeline. 

## **Resuming Normal Activities After a Neck Lift**
As you’re feeling stronger and ready to resume non-strenuous activities, Dr. Koo says patients should feel comfortable doing so. “My patients will put a headwrap and scarf on and go out in two days,” she shares. “They get their Audrey Hepburn on.” That could mean a walk around the block, tidying up around the house, or any other gentle movement. Not yet on the agenda? Yoga, cardio, or anything that raises blood pressure.

Even if your recovery is relatively pain-free, you still need to be mindful of the healing process and wait for clearance before resuming certain activities. At four days, Dr. Koo tells her patients they can begin a “mall-pace” walk, and a brisk walk is usually safe at the two-week post-op mark. Dr. Ho takes a similar approach. “Two weeks for heavy lifting and strenuous activity,” she says, adding that you may return to work sooner if you’re not self-conscious about swelling and bruising or stitches. She likes to see patients one week, two weeks, and four weeks out to monitor their progress.

For more intense [exercise](https://aedit.com/aedition/when-to-start-exercising-again-after-cosmetic-surgery-procedures) — bootcamp, pilates, hot yoga — that results in heavy sweating or can raise blood pressure, Dr. Koo recommends waiting four to six weeks. As she explains, non-compliance can “stir up more swelling” and lead to the possibility of “more scar tissue.” Her advice: “It’s just best to wait.”

When it comes to recovering from a neck lift, Dr. Ho says you can think about the healing process in phases. He says achieving a natural result starts with good surgical technique. “It's about using a combination of a deep plane lift, tension-free skin closure with carefully hidden incisions around the ear and hairline, and repositioning the skin and soft tissue at a natural angle,” Dr. Cabin explains. “Otherwise, the face can look windswept or unnatural.”

But that’s not the only way technology is affecting the area below the jaw. The '[Zoom effect](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-prevent-tech-neck)' is alive and well, says [Adam Kolker, MD](https://www.drkolker.com/), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in NYC. People have spent the last 18 months seeing themselves on-screen with jowls, neck folds, and creases they may not have noticed IRL. “With cameras positioned too low, this often prompts emergency calls to a plastic surgeon, but these effects are not permanent,” he explains. Yet, the decision to pair a facelift into a neck lift comes down to the best approach for you and your concerns. “We often perform facelifts and neck lifts contemporaneously as the face and neck are married by the aging jawline," Dr. Kolker says. Whether the face and neck are aging at the same or different paces, addressing one without the other will distort the outcome. “If one area slightly outpaces the other but both areas show signs of aging, lifting only one can be like painting one room in an old house,” he cautions. “The room right next to it will look like it needs a fresh coat even more.”

Simply put, correcting just the face and not the neck (or vice versa) highlights any imperfections, and the signs of aging will start to become more noticeable than before. “For most patients, addressing the neck without addressing aging in the lower face creates a notable difference between the appearance of the two, which is why most surgeons typically recommend rejuvenating both the face and the neck,” states Dr. Hamilton.

The criteria for considering a neck lift with a facelift:

- Your neck and face both make you feel and look older than you are
- The neck doesn’t match the face in terms of tautness or vice versa
- You don’t want to undergo multiple procedures in the future
- There is sagging in the lower face, under the chin, and on the neck

Excess fullness and skin in the area under the chin and jaw is what Dr. Vila looks for in a neck lift patient. In the case of a facelift, “the signs are jowling and a deflated look to the face,” he adds. A lack of distinction between the jawline, chin, and neck area is usually the final determining factor to perform both procedures. “Though patients may consider the two procedures to be completely separate, I view them on the same spectrum,” he shares. “It’s just that different patients require different components, and some patients require all of them.”

Rarely are there instances when only a facelift is necessary — though they do exist. “If there is facial laxity and soft tissue descent to the jawline region with minimal cervical laxity or deformity, no neck lift is required,” Dr. Kolker explains. “Most often, by resuspending the SMAS and platysma, the muscle that covers the lower two-thirds of the face and most of the anterior neck, mild neck contour issues and laxity are often corrected.” But, if moderate or severe laxity is not corrected, chances are you'll be back in the operating room to fix the now more prominently aging neck.

As a general rule of thumb, dark colors recede and lighter shades (including highlighter) push features forward. So, the idea is to mimic as much of a natural shadow as possible.

It’s pretty standard for the muscles in the neck and jaw to become overactive with age, or you may have just been born with a prominent jaw. ## **4. For a Super Sharp Jawline, Filler Up**

As such, it’s necessary for the provider to understand the patient’s aesthetic goals. “It’s important to relay if you want a square jawline or a more tapered, rounded jawline,” Dr. Saddick notes.

But it's not just the jawline that requires attention. ## **5. Goodbye, Double Chin. Hello, Jawline.**
Fat plays an integral role in a snatched jawline. When there is a bit too much of it [under the chin](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-chin-augmentation-enhancement-procedures), it can obscure the jaw’s sharp lines. “I’m seeing more patients at a younger age with double chins and skin sagging, which detracts from the jawline,” Dr. Emer notes. “They want these really chiseled jaws and chins — which is what everyone sees on celebrities and all over social media — so, usually, fat reduction needs to be a part of the plan.”

Fat under the chin occurs from a combination of genetics, aging, and diet. “As the face descends with gravity and age, the facial fat drops to lower positions along the jawline, which creates jowls,” Dr. Halaas says. “Additionally, aging and [sun damage](https://aedit.com/aedition/cosmetic-procedures-treatments-to-correct-sun-damage) cause the skin to lose elasticity and droop, both of which are bad for the jawline.”

Dr. Halaas says that some devices can also decrease the fatty pockets of jowls and stimulate collagen and elastin for good contraction and tightening. “Radiofrequency, in particular, can be used in different ways, like under the surface of the skin as with AccuTite or FaceTite,” says Dr. Halaas. Unlike externally applied treatments, the procedure sits somewhere between non-invasive therapies and surgery. However, because it works internally and under the skin to melt fat and chisel the jaw and neck, it does require a few days of downtime and healing.

With a year spent crouched over computer screens and staring at Zoom, perhaps it’s time to shift some of the focus to the area just south of the face (read: the neck). 

No matter how dedicated we are to taking care of our complexions, [the neck](https://aedit.com/concern/neck-and-jawline-definition) is often neglected. The delicate area below the jawline tends to be one of the first to show signs of aging (i.e. wrinkles, laxity, hyperpigmentation) thanks to a lack of sebaceous glands and that pesky little thing called gravity. As we age, collagen and elastin production also slow, which naturally leads to volume loss and sagging. 

Constantly craning over electronic devices, however, has led to a younger generation prematurely experiencing said symptoms. Enter: tech neck. ‘Tech neck’ refers to the “effects of our posture on our body due to technology,” explains [David Isaacs, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/david-isaacs-md-912), a board certified oculofacial plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills. Here, we’re breaking down everything you need to know about preventing and correcting it.

## **What Is Tech Neck?** 
We spend so much time with our eyes on our smartphones, tablets, and other devices. As such, we also spend so much time in what Dr. Isaacs calls “a chin to chest position.” Perhaps unsurprisingly, that unfortunate posture can “affect different areas of our body, including our neck, back, spine, and shoulders, as well as the cosmetic aging appearance of our face and neck,” he continues. From an aesthetic perspective, that often results in “a double chin, jowls, sagging skin, marionette lines, and other signs of aging,” Dr. Isaacs notes. 

But it’s not just about the impact of our physical positions when our faces are fixated on screens. My grandmother always used to say that you can tell a person’s real age by taking a good look at their neck. One of the most delicate areas of the body, [the neck has thinner skin](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-neck-creams-for-tech-neck-sagging-jowls) than the rest of the body, causing the area to reveal signs of aging earlier and quicker than the face. These changes in skin quality, often visible in our early to mid-thirties, are notoriously difficult to reverse without surgical intervention in the form of a [neck lift](https://aedit.com/concern/neck-and-jawline-definition) … and all of its baggage, including a three to four month healing period. 

So, when a ‘mini’ neck lift started gaining traction in doctors’ offices, it sounded incredible: a mini solution to a maxi problem. It’s said to be less invasive with a shorter recovery and fewer risks, yet it yields similar results to its more serious sister. But things that sound too good to be true often are, and many plastic surgeons are calling the ‘mini’ neck lift a misnomer.

## **What Is a ‘Mini’ Neck Lift?**
“The shortest answer I can give you is there really is no such thing as a mini neck lift, per se,” says [Adam Kolker, MD](https://www.drkolker.com/), a New York City-based board certified plastic surgeon. “You will not go to a plastic surgery textbook of any kind and find the chapter on mini neck lifts. It does not exist.” But that’s not to say there aren’t procedural stepping stones on your way to a full blown neck lift. “On the flip side, you can now establish a hierarchy — or a treatment ladder — that will address one, several, or all of the issues,” he notes. 

Moving from the lowest rungs of a ladder (i.e. the suite of non-surgical options to reverse signs of aging in the neck), Dr. Kolker explains that each step signifies a more invasive solution until reaching the pinnacle: a full, [traditional neck lift](https://aedit.com/procedure/direct-neck-lift). “Rather than calling it a mini neck lift, there are minimal access points or minimally invasive corrections for neck laxity,” he offers. 

## **The Pros and Cons of a Mini Neck Lift**
Considering this [sliding scale of neck procedures](https://aedit.com/aedition/8-ways-to-get-a-younger-looking-neck) that a mini neck lift could entail, we asked three renowned plastic surgeons to explain everything someone can expect with a ‘mini’ neck lift, from the goals to the limitations — and everything in between. 

### **1. It CAN’T be performed on everyone**
“With the neck in particular, you have to be very careful to do a complete history and physical examination,” says Dr. Kolker, who explains that the clinical examination will reveal key factors about a patient’s viability, including the elasticity or inelasticity of the skin, the amount of extra fat underneath the chin, and the visibility of the platysma muscle (i.e. the vertical band connecting the jaw to the collarbone that’s also visible when someone flexes their jaw). 

“It depends on the individual’s anatomy and desires and to choose the most minimally invasive approach that will satisfy their needs over the term they’re hoping to achieve the durability of the result,” he says. In some cases, the exam will reveal that an alternative procedure can satisfy their goals better. “Is everyone who is 40 to 45 years old with early signs of excess skin in the neck a candidate for a neck lift,” Dr. Kolker asks. “The answer is no — they don’t necessarily need to do that yet.”

### **2. The procedure CAN vary from patient to patient** 
“There’s kind of a spectrum of addressing the neck,” explains [Thuy-Van Tina Ho, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/thuyvan-ho-md-25248), a double board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon who runs a private practice in Philadelphia. “It’s all about phrasing too, right? How I would define the mini neck lift could be very different than other surgeons out there.” 

For Dr. Ho, a mini neck lift is a “step down” from a neck lift. She defines it as a procedure where “less skin is elevated,” but the surgery specifics will vary from patient to patient. “One particular procedure never works for all people,” Dr. Kolker adds. “It’s got to be very uniquely tailored to the individual.” 

According to Dr. Ho, in a mini, the “muscle layer may not be addressed or a limited [platysmaplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/platysmaplasty) may be pursued, just some simple suturing, but no major undermining,” in patients whose neck bands are showing some slack. A “limited SMAS suspension could be performed as well,” she says, depending upon the extent of sagging along the jawline. 

### **3. It CAN be effective for mild jowling and sagging skin**
Realistic expectations are crucial to any successful aesthetic surgery, and, with mini neck lifts in particular, all parties need to carefully align on what is a reasonable outcome. “You do achieve definitive results, but not as dramatic or drastic compared to a traditional neck lift,” Dr. Ho notes. “Patients who have mild neck issues and aging neck issues — like mild skin laxity or fullness in the chin or neck area or platysmal banding issues — could be a good candidate.”

But the procedure, however customizable, has its limits. “If someone has heavy or even moderate skin laxity, this isn’t the procedure for them,” she shares. “It’s not going to fix it.”

### **4. It CAN be done in tandem with other modalities** 
“None of these surgical procedures do anything for skin quality,” says NYC-based board certified plastic surgeon [Steven M. Levine, MD](https://www.stevenlevinemd.com/). But there are energy-based treatments that can support neck rejuvenation, particularly crepey-looking skin, which is notoriously difficult to neutralize. “I think there’s a role for general neck resurfacing and anything you can do to improve skin quality,” he says. ### **5. It CAN’T tighten or fix fine lines or wrinkles on the neck**
“The crepiness and fine lines in the neck are probably the hardest things to manage,” Dr. Kolker says. So, while you can improve tone on the neck with a mini lift, the lack of collagen and elastin in that area means you “can’t really tighten that area up that much, unless you move to the more surgical end of the spectrum,” he explains. Even at the most aggressive end of the mini neck lift spectrum — which typically involves traditional liposuction or a [liposuction with radiofrequency assisted lipectomy (RFAL)](https://aedit.com/procedure/radiofrequency-assisted-liposuction) — is “not going to tremendously improve the quality of the skin if you’ve got a significant amount of excess,” he cautions, because the sagging skin is not removed.

### **6. It CAN have unpredictable results**
There’s no such thing as a sure thing, especially in plastic surgery. That rings even truer when there is not one codified, board-approved definition of what a mini neck lift entails and, thus, no established optimal outcome. “For the average woman, we’re talking about a tiny incision underneath the skin with radiofrequency and suction-assisted lipectomy, which is going to give you a small improvement,” Dr. Kolker explains. “Sometimes the improvement is as small as 10 or 15 percent. Sometimes it’s as much as 30 or 40 percent.”

An ideal candidate for a “limited incision procedure” (Dr. Kolker’s preferred term for the more serious end of the mini neck lift spectrum) is someone with good skin elasticity. With only small incisions under the chin and without removing any excess skin, the procedure’s success is entirely reliant upon the skin’s ability to bounce back, meaning that outcomes and results will vary based on how well skin constricts and reshapes during recovery. For this reason, such procedures are “appropriate only for very, very mild excess,” he warns. 

### **7. It CAN’T correct significant neck sagging**
Not sure if a small incision neck lift is right for you? According to Dr. Levine, it’s quite simple to determine. “If you have a lot of loose skin and poor skin elasticity, then you need a procedure that will also remove and tighten loose skin, which is a more traditional neck lift,” he says.

Deep neck contouring may also be necessary. “It addresses deep fat, which is a very different kind of fat than regular liposuction,” he says. He describes deep neck contouring as a limited incision procedure to remove the fat and glands beneath the platysma muscle in order to “create extra space in the neck for the neck skin to contract over and give a more chiseled jawline.” This procedure can be performed independently as a smaller-scale neck procedure or added onto a full neck lift or facelift.

### **8. It CAN include a chin implant**
Surprisingly, a [chin implant](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-chin-augmentation-enhancement-procedures) is on the medical list of neck enhancement procedures. “Sometimes people have neck laxity because they have a diminutive or underprojected chin,” Dr. Kolker shares. In these cases, “some combination of either suction or radiofrequency with a small chin implant has a very powerful effect on the neck skin because you’re using an implant to tighten the skin of the neck up by pulling that neck skin forward without making bigger incisions,” he explains. At the same time, you can also address excess fat. “By changing the architecture of the neck, you’re also improving the appearance of the neck and the jawline for a more contoured look,” he says.

### **9. Patients CAN age out of eligibility**
According to Dr. Levine, the restrictions for the more invasive end of minimal incision neck lift procedures — like superficial liposuction and deep neck contouring — are tied to the more advanced signs of aging. “The limitations of these liposuction procedures are based on how elastic someone’s skin is because you’re relying on contraction and the skin’s contractility,” he says. “The more elastic the skin is, the better result you’ll get.” As such, he says it’s generally a “great option” for someone in their [thirties](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-cosmetic-procedures-plastic-surgery-to-consider-in-your-30s), [forties](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-cosmetic-procedures-plastic-surgery-to-consider-in-your-40s), and even [fifties](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-cosmetic-procedures-plastic-surgery-to-consider-in-your-50s-60s-70s). “Some people can have great elasticity in their sixties,” he says. “But, as you get older, you have to evaluate based on the specific patient.”

### **10. Results CAN’T offset the effects of an unhealthy lifestyle**
“Once you hit the [recovery room](https://aedit.com/aedition/preparing-for-a-smooth-recovery-from-plastic-surgery), the aging process resumes that moment,” Dr. Kolker notes. “If people are predisposed to change or if their lifestyle predisposes them, like sun exposure or [smoking](https://aedit.com/aedition/impact-of-cigarette-smoking-vaping-on-skin-hair-teeth-health), then obviously you’re going to see a little bit less durability than someone who [eats clean](https://aedit.com/aedition/meal-plans-diet-before-after-cosmetic-surgery), is fit, and takes care of their skin and weight.” At the end of the day, he says any elective surgery is a “small piece of the puzzle” and healthy lifestyle choices are “the most important to make the results last longer.”

### **11. You CAN’T expect zero side effects**
The term ‘mini’ is often thought to imply less downtime and invasiveness, but don’t let the word fool you. “I’ve even heard it called a ‘weekend procedure,’ which is wrong,” Dr. Ho cautions. “It’s still a surgery and the risks are similar, if not the same, as a traditional neck lift.” To heal properly and correctly, “you need to take it seriously,” she adds. 

Although each patient’s recovery will look a bit different, Dr. Ho says that it’s safe to expect [bruising and swelling](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-minimize-swelling-after-cosmetic-surgery) for the first few days post-op. In some cases, it can last for as long as two weeks. [Exercise](https://aedit.com/aedition/when-to-start-exercising-again-after-cosmetic-surgery-procedures) is also off limits for 14 days, and Dr. Ho gives her patients strict instructions for how and when to wear the post-op [compression garment](https://aedit.com/aedition/benefits-of-compression-garments-after-cosmetic-surgery). “These precautions are going to be the same, regardless of whether it’s a full or mini,” she says.

### **12. It CAN exacerbate other neck concerns**
A superficial liposuction — that is, the removal of fat that covers the platysma muscle bands — can successfully address a full-bodied neck in patients who are candidates, but it isn’t as simple as it sounds. “You have to be so careful with necks,” warns Dr. Levine, who recommends booking a neck procedure with a [board certified](https://aedit.com/aedition/medical-board-certification-in-plastic-surgery-cosmetic-dermatology) plastic surgeon who specializes in treating the face and neck. If superficial lipo isn’t carefully performed, there may be negative consequences down the road because “you’ve removed the layer of fat that camouflages the platysma muscle, and the visible bands are what people don’t like” he says. 

So, while you’ve addressed one concern, you may have exacerbated another. “As we age, we lose fat in the neck and the platysma becomes more obvious,” he notes. “You’ve improved the neck contour at the expense of making the neck bands more visible.” 

### **13. It CAN’T provide long-lasting results**
For neck procedures that remove fat via superficial liposuction, RFAL, or deep neck contouring, Dr. Kolker says a patient can expect the results to last somewhere in the neighborhood of five to 10 years, depending on lifestyle factors — though the removal of the fat cells is permanent. 

Dr. Ho adds that many of her patients seeking a mini neck lift are looking for a smaller-scale solution, not the dramatic improvement or neck contour of a traditional neck lift. As such, the results are “definitely not going to last as long” as a full neck lift because it requires less surgical intervention, she says.

When invited into the Sperling Dermatology’s new [Sperling Spectacular Spa](https://www.sperlingdermatology.com/body/) in Red Bank, NJ, I jumped at the chance to check it out, meet the staff, and try a non-invasive treatment. As a beauty editor who focuses on skincare and aesthetics, this place can easily become my new home ‘office.’ I met with board certified physician assistant [Christinna Del Genio, MS, PA-C](https://www.sperlingdermatology.com/about/about-office-staff/), who gave me a tour space before recommending I try [InMode’s Evoke](https://inmodemd.com/workstation/evoke/), one of their newest treatment offerings. The device uses radiofrequency (RF) heat technology to stimulate collagen and lift and tighten the skin around the cheeks, jawline, and jowls.  

Once I saw the before and after pictures, I was sold. The Evoke “workspace” comes with two offerings — Evoke Face and Evoke Neck. Both applicators are hands-free and employ RF energy to reshape facial tissue, but the former is specifically designed to treat [cheeks and jowls](https://aedit.com/aedition/cosmetic-procedures-to-define-cheekbones) while the latter addresses the [neck and submental areas](https://aedit.com/aedition/8-ways-to-get-a-younger-looking-neck). We decided to focus on my [jawline](https://aedit.com/aedition/8-ways-to-get-a-more-defined-jawline) since I’d love for that skin to be a bit tighter (I’m in my late thirties, after all), and I wasn’t a candidate for the neck portion. As Del Genio and her team set me up in a comfy chair for my first 30-minute treatment, I began taking notes and interviewing her about the technology.  

## **Evoke Technology**
“The goal of radiofrequency skin remodeling is to heat collagen at deep and superficial levels to 40 to 43 degrees Celsius,” Del Genio explains. “In doing so, the formation of new collagen begins and the skin tightening effect takes place.” Unlike other tightening devices that promise similar benefits, Evoke is hands-free and contains temperature monitoring and control. As a result, it has the ability to deliver uniform, controlled heat energy without being dependent on the technician. If the skin reaches a threshold level the radiofrequency energy, it’s temporarily suspended to protect the skin from discomfort and possible burn. Other devices have a hand-held applicator, which requires the person giving the treatment to continually move it around at a fast speed to prevent that from happening.  

### **Evoke Treatment & Protocol**
Thirty minutes flew by, and, as promised, it didn’t hurt at all. It was as if I was wearing warm Bose headphones that were positioned tightly on my cheeks. After each treatment my face *felt* tighter. I didn’t even have to touch it to feel the difference. I saw results after my first treatment, but I followed the protocol and continued to do a series of four sessions spaced about one week apart for the best results. While I noticed incremental changes throughout, final results will be visible eight weeks after my fourth treatment. Skin tightening results are supposed to last one year, with one yearly maintenance session encouraged thereafter.

## **The Takeaway**
The lift is real! I am beyond impressed with my results week after week and am excited to have a more sculpted jawline — I never had one before! I’m anxious to see my full results eight weeks from now and am optimistically curious as to whether this is really going to last 12 months like it claims. Time will tell.

Repeated pulling of the platysma muscle, which is the muscle men often flex while shaving, tugs on the overlying skin and causes it to wrinkle over time. According to Dr. Paul, thyroid or neck surgery also loosens the neck and can contribute to an older appearance.

While there’s not much we can do about getting older, it is possible to slow down the physical signs of aging. Here are some ways you can prevent future sagging skin and promote a younger-looking neck.

## **1. Protect Your Skin From the Sun**
It’s common knowledge that [sun exposure](https://aedit.com/aedition/7-things-youre-not-doing-for-your-skin-but-should) causes major damage to your skin. This includes the delicate skin on your neck, which is one of the first places the signs of aging can take hold. According to Dr. Paul, the single best thing you can do to preserve a youthful neck and prevent sagging skin, age spots, and fine lines is to wear sunscreen.

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends an SPF of at least 30 because it blocks 97 percent of the sun’s damaging UVB rays. Apply sunscreen to your face and neck every morning before putting on your makeup, whether you’re spending the day indoors or outside. Remember to reapply every few hours to make sure your skin is always protected.

## **2. Add a Retinoid To Your Skincare Routine**

If you’re an anti-aging veteran, your medicine cabinet is likely stocked with skincare products that promise to reduce wrinkles and give you a smooth, tight complexion. There is a huge variety of creams, for instance, that help moisturize the neck. Do they actually work? “In my experience,” says Dr. Paul, “the benefit of neck creams is quite limited.” Unless it contains a retinoid.

Retinoids, a class of ingredients that includes retinol, retinyl palmitate, and retinoic acid, can repair sun damage by reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, smoothing the skin texture, and evening the skin tone. They do it by boosting collagen production and stimulating cell turnover deep within the skin.

“Retinoids are potent, but they may be irritating,” says Dr. Paul. To minimize irritation, apply a retinoid to clean skin at night and wait a few minutes before layering on moisturizer. Because the skin on the neck is thinner than it is on the face, start with a small amount of retinoid and build up slowly. If you've never used one, a dermatologist can guide you in selecting the right product.

## **3. Shrink Your Double Chin** 
If you’re worried about a double chin, a non-invasive treatment called [Kybella®](https://aedit.com/procedure/kybella) could help restore the youthful neck you desire. Kybella® is a non-surgical treatment that involves a series of deoxycholic acid injections that target and destroy fat cells in the chin. There are no incisions with Kybella® and most patients experience minimal downtime.

While the acid in Kybella® does destroy fat cells, which are metabolized and eliminated by the body naturally, it won’t help with turkey neck. “Kybella® does not change the skin of the neck or laxity that may be present in the platysma,” Dr. Paul explains. To remove sagging skin after Kybella® treatment, a skin-tightening or surgical procedure may be necessary.

## **4. Reduce Wrinkles Caused By Aging and Sun Damage**
We know Botox® works to reduce lines and wrinkles on the face. Similarly, [Botox®](https://aedit.com/procedure/botox-facial) can be injected into the submental area and [jawline to give a “lift”](https://aedit.com/procedure/jawline-slimming-with-botox) to an aging neck. “Botox® may reduce vertical cording or banding on the neck that is caused by the platysma muscle contraction,” says Dr. Paul. The treatment promotes a more youthful neck by relaxing the muscles that pull on the overlying skin and create wrinkles. The results of Botox® last between four and six months, and the treatment can be performed in as little as 15 minutes. It's best on vertical lines, though. Botox® will have little, if any, effect on horizontal lines which are formed on the neck through skin creasing.

## **5. Embrace Technology to Improve Sagging Skin**
It can be challenging to [treat sagging skin](https://aedit.com/procedure/direct-neck-lift) with topical products alone. At the same time, many patients are hesitant to go under the knife to correct loose neck skin. Luckily there are several professional skin tightening options that can give them the results they desire without surgery.

“Radiofrequency and ultrasound devices aim to tighten the neck with energy,” says Dr. Paul. The treatments have been shown to tighten loose neck skin by using energy to heat the skin and boost the production of collagen and important proteins. However, Dr. Paul cautions that the effects of these devices are limited and patients may need multiple treatments to see results.

## **6. Go Under the Laser, Not the Knife**
We know lasers can reduce unwanted hair and remove tattoos, but these incredible devices can also be used to rejuvenate the skin and promote a more youthful look. [Laser resurfacing](https://aedit.com/procedure/nonablative-fractional-lasers) involves directing short, concentrated, pulsating beams of light at the face or neck to remove damaged skin layer by layer.

With laser resurfacing, “the goal is to improve lines, texture, and surface irregularities,” says Dr. Paul. There are two types of lasers commonly used in skin resurfacing: ablative [CO2 lasers](https://aedit.com/procedure/ablative-co2-laser) and [non-ablative (fraxel) lasers](https://aedit.com/procedure/fraxel-repair). “There is more tightening with ablative lasers, though there is a higher risk of neck scarring,” Dr. Paul cautions. “Choose your laser doctor carefully.”

## **7. Try Intense Pulsed Light Therapy For Dark Spots**
If you have dark spots on your neck, you’re looking at the results of sun damage. Luckily, you don’t have to live with age spots forever. [Intense pulsed light therapy (IPL)](https://aedit.com/procedure/ipl) is similar to laser treatment in that it uses energy to treat wrinkles, dark spots, and sun damage. But it’s different because it releases many different wavelengths of light, so it is more scattered and less targeted. During an IPL treatment, pigment in the skin absorbs the light, which is converted to heat. The heat then destroys the unwanted pigment to fade the appearance of red and brown spots. According to Dr. Paul, it may take between three and five IPL treatments to see results.

## **8. When Surgery is The Best Option**
Non-invasive treatments can dramatically improve the appearance of a double chin,wrinkles, age spots, and fine lines on the neck. If you have loose or sagging skin, however, this might be best treated with surgery. Options for cosmetic neck surgery include [liposuction](https://aedit.com/procedure/laser-assisted-liposuction) of the neck to reduce fat or a [neck lift](https://aedit.com/procedure/platysmaplasty) to tighten the skin and muscle.

According to Dr. Paul, a neck lift in conjunction with a deep plane facelift are the gold standard in restoring a youthful neck and jawline. In this procedure, the deep tissues of the neck are dissected and supported to lift sagging skin on the neck and jowls. A deep plane face and neck lift is performed under general anesthesia in an operating room. The results are natural-looking and can last up to 10 to 12 years.
