Since standard foundations are much thicker, they’re better at concealing and hiding imperfections. When it comes to applying a tinted moisturizer, you’ll want to apply it like a regular foundation, using a sponge and/or brush for seamless coverage. From there, you can continue to layer your makeup products as you normally would.

In a world where anti-aging skincare trends change each season, it can be really tough to keep up with the newest ‘it’ ingredients - and even tougher to know if there’s any merit to including them in your daily routine. One of these buzz-worthy ingredients are neuropeptides: small chains of amino acids are responsible for acting as chemical messengers that can reportedly reduce signs of aging without the need for injectables. But the real question is, do they really work? We’ve spoken to dermatologists Dr. Marisa Garshick [Dr. Marisa Garshick](https://aedit.com/provider/marisa-garshick-md-313) and Dr. Amy Spizuoco [Dr. Amy Spizuoco](https://aedit.com/provider/amy-spizuoco-19341)and Dr. William A. Kennedy III  to get the inside track on neuropeptides in skincare.


### **What are neuropeptides?**

“Neuropeptides are an innovative skincare ingredient due to their unique ability to interact with the skin at a cellular level, offering a range of potential benefits” says Dr. Kennedy.  From enhancing overall skin health and functionality, to promoting collagen synthesis and enhancing the skin's barrier function, vital for retaining moisture and protecting against environmental stressors neuropeptides have a dramatic effect on promoting healthy looking skin” Dr. Kennedy explains.  “Neuropeptides are a topical treatment that can sometimes be called ‘Nature's Botox’” Dr. Spizuoco explains. “They are a topical treatment that can help reduce wrinkles, inflammation, and promote younger-looking skin.” These protein-like molecules, that can give various signals to your body. In skincare, “they provide a signal to the body that an action needs to take place. In the case of neuropeptides, the peptides block the release of chemicals that are responsible for muscle movement that leads to fine lines and wrinkles,” Dr. Garshick tells us. Indeed, research carried out by scientists at Granada University suggests that certain neuropeptides may reduce the appearance of common signs of aging by targeting specific cellular processes. 

### **Where do neuropeptides get their names from?** 

The naming of neuropeptides can be confusing, so finding them in skincare labeling certainly isn’t always straightforward! While their scientific name is generally made up of the sequence of different amino acids that it is composed of, many of the most effective peptides that have been discovered are not marketed under brand names. For example, hexapeptide-8, one of the most frequently used neuropeptides in skincare, is marketed under the brand name Argireline®.

### **Which neuropeptide skincare formulations are most effective?** 

“As with many skincare products, serums tend to be most effective as serums often have a higher concentration of the active ingredient and may offer better penetration. Neuropeptides may also be combined with certain other ingredients like hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin to help plump the skin as well as other peptides that can help to firm the skin,” Dr. Gashick told us. When you’re shopping for skincare, look for products that include one of multiple of the following neuropeptides in their ingredient list:

- **Acetyl hexapeptide-8:** marketed under the brand name Argireline® is a synthetic peptide that is believed to work by inhibiting the release of neurotransmitters called catecholamines. It is understood that by blocking catecholamines Argireline may help reduce the appearance of fine lines that are associated with frequent repetitive movements such as crows feet or frown lines.

- **Matrixyl 3000:** the peptide is understood to work by gradually slowing down the glycation process, where sugars reduce the quality of the dermis (the second layer of the three-layer system that makes up your skin). The neuropeptide has also been found to reduce muscle contractions that lead to fine lines.

- **Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 (Pal-GHK):** aka Matrixyl 3000, is used in plumping anti-aging products, the peptide “stimulates collagen production and improves skin elasticity” [Dr. Spizuoco](https://aedit.com/provider/amy-spizuoco-19341) tells us. 

- **Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 (Pal-GQPR):** “reduces inflammation and supports skin’s firmness and elasticity”, [Dr. Spizuoco](https://aedit.com/provider/amy-spizuoco-19341) explains. You can generally find it in serums alongside other active ingredients that have been curated to reduce signs of aging.

- **Pentapeptides:** these peptides actually have five amino acids, and they can help improve the appearance of skin by boosting moisture absorption. They are often associated with hydrating ingredients to help maintain the healthy, youthful glow that we all seek. 

- **SNAP-8:** this elongation of acetyl hexapeptide-8 is reportedly up to 30% more effective than its predecessor.

### **What skin concerns can neuropeptides address?**

The primary benefit of adding neuropeptides to your skincare routine is addressing signs of aging at their root cause. By sending messages to the muscles that contract and accentuate fine lines, peptides are an excellent ally in fighting wrinkles. They could be of particular interest to those who are sensitive to retinol but who still want to take steps to prevent early signs of aging. [Dr. Garshick](https://aedit.com/provider/marisa-garshick-md-313) explains: “Neuropeptides may be used as an alternative to retinol to help improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in someone unable to tolerate retinol, even in their 20s and 30s.” But patients with more advanced signs of aging could still benefit from using them too, she says. “They can also be incorporated as individuals get older and lines may become deeper to help make the lines appear softer and smoother.”

### **What is the difference between neuropeptides and neuromodulators?**

If you’re looking into antiaging skincare, chances are you have probably come across both terms. While they sound similar, their mechanisms are quite different. Neuromodulators ([Botox®](https://aedit.com/procedure/botox), [Dysport®](https://aedit.com/procedure/dysportr), [Daxxify®](https://www.daxxify.com/), etc.) are injectables that work by blocking certain signals that allow muscles to contract. The mechanism is similar, though not the same, for neuropeptides. “Neuropeptides are peptides that are released as chemical messengers from nerve cells,” [Dr. Spizuoco](https://aedit.com/provider/amy-spizuoco-19341) explained. “They act either in an endocrine manner, where they reach their target cells via the bloodstream, or a paracrine manner, as co-transmitters modulating the function of neurotransmitters”, she added. Neuropeptides are incorporated into topical skincare products to have a similar result as injectables, but the results aren’t as pronounced or as long-lasting. “Neuropeptides offer a great option for someone who isn’t yet ready for injectables or prefers to avoid injectables,” says [Dr. Garshick](https://aedit.com/provider/marisa-garshick-md-313). “While they will not deliver the same results as neuromodulators like Botox, they can be a good option and can be helpful to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Neuropeptides also have a role to be used in conjunction with neuromodulators as a complementary treatment and may be considered a form of maintenance,” she added. Says Dr. Kennedy, “while both neuropeptides and neuromodulators play crucial roles in the nervous system, neuropeptides are more specialized in direct neural communication and specific responses, whereas neuromodulators broadly adjust neural activity and functional states.”

### **What makes the skin on your scalp different?**

Before delving into the merits of having a scalp care routine, let’s start by looking at what makes the skin on your scalp special, and what that means for how you should be taking care of it. While the scalp is an extension of the skin on our bodies, it also acts as a base for thousands of hair follicles and glands. These unique conditions mean that traditional skincare products won’t be the right fit for your scalp.”The weather, stress, age, and scalp-stripping hair products can all trigger irritation and dryness that present as tiny flakes. Scalp care promotes hair growth by providing a healthy environment in which your hair follicles will thrive, while also preventing common issues like dandruff and excess oiliness. Massaging your scalp can improve circulation, reducing stress and promoting relaxation. Additionally, scalp care supports overall skin health, protecting against environmental damage and premature aging.  Just as aging skin on other parts of your body lose moisture, older scalp hair follicles also lose nutrients and moisture and this causes your hair to lose its luxurious, youthful appearance, [Dr. Kennedy](https://aedit.com/provider/william-kennedy-md-26292) tells us. 

### **How many steps should you include in a scalp skincare routine?**

Scalp care doesn’t need to be complicated, [Dr. Garshick](https://aedit.com/provider/marisa-garshick-md-313) tells us: “In general, at a minimum caring for your scalp should include proper cleansing with a shampoo to remove buildup without drying out the scalp.” But for some people, a more complex routine could be advisable: “Exfoliating can be helpful to get rid of dead skin cells and in other cases, properly nourishing the scalp and moisturizing the scalp may be needed.” Generally speaking, approaching scalp care as you would skincare is advisable, adjusting the steps you include depending on specific concerns or goals. ”Some scalp ingredients can be too harsh to be on facial skin,” [Dr. Spizuoco](https://aedit.com/provider/amy-spizuoco-19341) points out, so be sure to use specific products for your face and scalp.  [Dr. Kennedy](https://aedit.com/provider/william-kennedy-md-26292) says not to forget that scalp care is skin care; and everyones skin care should include a healthy mix of nondrying cleaning exfoliation, moisturizing, and frequent gentle massage to encourage blood flow and hair follicle nutrition 

### **Which steps should be included in a scalp care routine?**

Much like skincare, scalp care routines can be adjusted over time as the condition of your skin evolves. Dr. Spizuoco shared her ideal scalp care routine with us:

- **Start with a pre-shampoo treatment:** these oils, balms, and butters target specific scalp and hair concerns. They are typically applied 10-15 minutes before you shower to allow them time to get to work on your scalp.

- **Use an exfoliating shampoo:** this step is probably the most straightforward to add to your routine simply by switching out your regular shampoo for something kinder to your scalp. To take your scalp cleanse to the next level, look for a shampoo with skincare ingredients such as salicylic acid which helps control the production of sebum which can make your skin and hair appear oily.

- **Give your scalp a massage:** use your fingers or a scalp massaging tool to gently massage your skin. Starting at your forehead, massage in small circular motions, and gradually move toward the crown and back of your head. If your hair isn’t too knotted, you can then firmly comb your fingers along your scalp.


- **Keep your scalp soothed & hydrated:** apply a spray or leave-in scalp serum to keep the skin on your scalp calm and happy until your next hair wash.


### **What does an ideal scalp care shelf look like?**

It’s the epitome of self care in every movie montage, as nothing symbolizes ‘me time’ quite like a sheet mask. Providing a few minutes of solace to give your skin (and body), a little rest, the serum-drenched masks incentivize a moment to slow down while working overtime to give the skin a hydrating boost of good-for-you ingredients. Though many see sheet masks as a fun add-on, they are much more than a 10-minute self care detour – the benefits are truly there. Here’s what the experts have to say on this skincare favorite and how to incorporate it into your routine. 

## **Why Sheet Masks Are Worth Using** 

It’s not up to us to dictate what should or shouldn’t be a part of someone’s routine, skincare should – first and foremost – be based on individual needs, but to say that sheet masks are frivolous would be unjust to their benefits. So, what makes them so great? “Sheet masks allow active ingredients time to absorb into your skin by letting the ingredients sit longer because the ingredients are ‘occluded’ by the mask,” explains [Caroline Chang, MD](https://riderminstitute.com/our_staff/), a board certified dermatologist and founder of the [Rhode Island Dermatology Institute](https://riderminstitute.com/). By keeping the ingredients locked on the skin without a chance to evaporate, the solution can penetrate deeper and in higher concentrations adds Dr. Chang. This potent delivery system also makes bio-cellulose masks a favorite post-procedure. “These can be used after an in-office procedure nightly until the skin is healed.” 
While your routine may be packed with lotions and potions galore, sheet masks aren’t a replacement for other skincare essentials and can work in conjunction with the other steps. They can complement any routine because “a standard serum doesn’t allow your skin to absorb nearly as much of the active ingredients,” explains Elina Wang, CEO, and co-founder of [ESW Beauty](eswbeauty.com). Translation: if you need a boost of hydration, workhorse ingredients, or potent actives, add a sheet mask to your weekly regimen. 
## **Ways To Enhance Your Use of Sheet Masks** 

You can wash your face and put on any sheet mask you’d like, or you can do this. 

1. **Find The Right Mask**: With so many to choose from, where do you start? Dr. Chang suggests bio-cellulose over a traditional sheet mask stating that “bio-cellulose clings to your skin more tightly allowing the ingredients to absorb even more effectively than a sheet mask.” Additionally, this technology allows the masks to retain more moisture, but if a bio-cellulose option isn’t within reach, don’t write off the tried and true version. 
2. **Prep Yourself**: Cleansing is always the first step explains Dr. Chang. A clean canvas is a great start to ensure there’s no debris standing in the way of the skin getting those potent ingredients. However, it's not the only prep step you can take. Wang recommends popping the mask into the fridge to give it a cryotherapy touch. Apart from helping with inflammation and swelling, Wang mentions the cold mask can "enhance the overall experience with a more cooling effect, perfect for the start of your morning routine.” 
3. **Use As Instructed**: It may be self-explanatory, the instructions are on the packaging after all, but, the key here is to be mindful of the ingredients. “A mask with brightening ingredients might be more irritating to the skin and should be used less frequently,” notes Dr. Chang. While most are great for all skin types, sheet masks should still be selected with the same caution as other aspects of the routine.

Make sure you do this at a time when you have 10 to 15 minutes to yourself.”

## **The Benefits of Sulfur**

“Sulfur helps the skin as it works to absorb excess oil and also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Additionally, it may have some exfoliating benefits as well,” Dr. Garshick adds. ## **What Is Zinc Oxide?** 
In simplest terms, zinc oxide is a white, powdery mineral that is used in a wide range of skincare, cosmetics, and personal care products, including sun protection, makeup, bath soaps, and more. “Zinc oxide is a naturally occurring white mineral found in zincite,” says Joshua Ross, a celebrity aesthetician for [Sonage](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fsonage.com%2F) and founder of [SkinLab](https://skinlabusa.com/) in Los Angeles. “This mineral can be combined with other ingredients to give it a tint that matches natural skin tones.”

Providing the broadest spectrum UVA and UVB protection (the former causes sun damage, while the latter leads to sunburns), zinc oxide is [approved](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/understanding-over-counter-medicines/sunscreen-how-help-protect-your-skin-sun) by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use as an active ingredient in sunscreen. For that reason alone, it should be a mainstay in any skincare regimen, but it actually does even more for the skin. “Besides supporting skin healing for decades, zinc oxide today is a common active ingredient found in physical sunscreens, diaper rash creams, calamine lotions, etc.,” explains [Amy Spizuoco, DO](https://aedit.com/provider/amy-spizuoco-19341), a board certified dermatologist and founder of True Dermatology in New York City. “Zinc oxide is most commonly added to topical solutions such as moisturizers, sunscreens, and makeup products like foundations.” 

## **The Benefits of Zinc Oxide in Sun Care & Skincare**

Where do we begin? Ross explains that, “in addition to sun protection, zinc has benefits including reducing [inflammation](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-inflammaging), soothing, and promotes healing for [scars and wounds](https://aedit.com/concern/scars), and can help keep conditions like [eczema and psoriasis](https://aedit.com/aedition/comparing-eczema-vs-psoriasis) under control.” It also supports the skin barrier. “Additionally, the barrier formed by zinc oxide on the skin also helps to reduce transepidermal water loss, or TEWL, contributing to long-lasting moisturization,” notes Harry Fallick, MD, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon and founder of [CoTZ](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fcotzskincare.com%2F). One notable misconception about the mineral: That it clogs pores. “The particles are too large to penetrate the pore, so they sit on top of the pore acting as skin protection and barrier which can keep pollutants out of the skin,” Ross adds.

In sun care, zinc oxide is one of two physical blockers (alongside titanium dioxide) that can be used in sunscreen. “Zinc oxide works by ultimately refracting and reflecting UV rays away from the skin,” Dr. Fallick explains. “It does not absorb into the skin or the bloodstream and is very gentle, making it perfect for sensitive skin, children, or [post-procedure](https://aedit.com/aedition/post-procedure-skincare-makeup-product-guide) use.” This hopefully doesn’t need repeating, but sun protection is not just for aesthetic benefits. “Not having significant sun protection can lead to [sunburn](https://aedit.com/aedition/dermatologist-tips-for-soothing-sunburn),” Dr. Spizuoco warns. “Having five or more sunburns doubles your risk for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.”

It fortifies the immune system, aids in brain development and memory, and prevents cellular damage (to name a few). Foods such as chickpeas, red meat, shellfish, and cashews are good sources of zinc. If you are not getting enough zinc through your diet, supplementation may be an option.

## **The Best Candidates for Zinc Oxide** 
Due to zinc oxide’s soothing properties, anti-inflammatory benefits, and versatility, everyone is a candidate for a zinc-powered product – though the type of product you use will depend on your skin type. Those with acne-related concerns may be using a topical with zinc oxide, as per their dermatologist’s recommendations. And if you have some calming products in your over-the-counter skincare routine, there is a good chance zinc oxide is making an appearance.

There is no excuse not to wear sunscreen every single day, no matter the weather, but those with acne or other [skin sensitivities](https://aedit.com/aedition/difference-between-sensitive-vs-sensitized-skin) may be wary of adding any potential irritants to their complexion. Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are widely considered to be the gentlest and safest sun care products. “Zinc oxide does not cause any severe side effects, and cases of allergic reactions due to zinc oxide are rare,” Dr. Spizuoco shares. When it comes to zinc oxide in sunscreen, Ross recommends finding a product with no less than 10 percent. “This is regardless of SPF claims – be it  20, 30, or 40,” he says. “We know that 10 percent zinc will provide the needed protection to block out UVA, as well as UVB rays.” The exception to this 10 percent rule is formulas that pair zinc oxide with other actives that enhance its efficacy. CoTZ sunscreens, for example, combine zinc oxide and titanium dioxide because “you can achieve a higher SPF with a lower total percentage of total active ingredients than with zinc oxide alone, while still achieving good UVA coverage,” Dr. Fallick explains. This is because “zinc oxide both complements titanium dioxide’s protective abilities and extends photoprotection to the skin where titanium dioxide is insufficient,” he adds.
