Fractional lasers describe a targeted method of treatment that allows for precise ablation. The SmartSkin CO2 laser is a type of ablative fractional that is customizable to suit the patient's skin concerns as well as expectations for recovery time. Providers are able to adjust the SmartSkin system to customize laser power, scan pattern, density of microchannels, and number of pulses. A topical anesthetic cream will be applied to numb the skin. Once the patient is thoroughly anesthetized, the cream will be removed and the treatment will begin. The SmartSkin laser will be expertly applied to the treatment area, targeting uneven skin texture, irregular pigmentation, fine lines, and other skin imperfections. The laser is applied to the skin in a wave-motion pattern, unlike most lasers which deliver the laser energy in a stamp pattern. The provider will closely monitor the skin to ensure an effective but comfortable session. Once the skin has been thoroughly treated, a soothing serum or ointment will be applied and a bandage may be applied to the skin.

- A retinol cream or hydrocortisone pretreatment may be prescribed
- Avoid sun exposure
- Do not use tanning products
- Decrease alcohol consumption
- Discontinue use of any harsh skincare products, peels, and aggressive scrubs
- An antiviral medication may be prescribed
- Avoid eating or drinking for at least 6 hours prior
- Topical or local anesthetic
- Laser is applied to the treatment area, targeting uneven skin texture, irregular pigmentation, fine lines, and other skin imperfections
- Once treated, a serum or ointment will be applied
- Bandage may be applied to the skin
Degree of redness, swelling, and discomfort from a SmartSkin laser resurfacing treatment will vary depending on the depth of treatment received. Most patients are able to return to normal activity within 1 week of treatment. While healing, patients should keep the skin moisturized with a hydrating ointment such as Aquaphor or petroleum jelly. Patients are able to use a gentle moisturizer and makeup once peeling and crusting has stopped.
The ideal candidate for a SmartSkin laser treatment has uneven skin tone and texture, fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, or mild to moderate skin laxity issues on the face and neck.
Not Recommended For
SmartSkin laser resurfacing is not recommended for use on darker skin tones due to risk of hypopigmentation.
Side effects from SmarkSkin laser skin resurfacing may include changes in skin tone and pigmentation, infection, milia, scarring, and burn injuries from the laser's heat.
