About the Procedure
Liposuction is one of the most popular and commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the United States. Typically done as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia, liposuction can be completed in several hours resulting in slimmer, more defined body contours. SmartLipo is a version of laser assisted lipolysis where a probe is inserted before the fat is removed that emulsifies adipose tissue. Melting the fat before removal allows for more fat volume to be removed in a shorter time with less trauma to surrounding tissue when compared to other forms of liposuction. SmartLipo has the additional benefit of mild skin contracture for more predictable skin tightening postoperatively. During the procedure patients will typically only require local anesthesia but may be administered a mild sedative for optimal comfort throughout the surgery. Once the preoperative markings have been delineated, the patient will lay comfortably on an operating table. Small incisions will be made near the treatment area so a cannula can be inserted which will infiltrate the area with tumescent fluid. Tumescent fluid is a saline solution that also has lidocaine for numbing and epinephrine to control bleeding. Tumescent fluid also expands and hardens the treatment area, minimizing trauma to surrounding tissue. Once thoroughly anesthetized the SmartLipo probe, which has a laser fiberoptic tip, will be inserted into the incision and slowly moved back and forth, melting fat for easier aspiration. Finally, an aspirating cannula will be inserted into the incision site to suction away the fat. Once the procedure is complete typically no sutures are required and a skin adhesive is applied over the incision sites. Immediate improvement is noticeable to all treated areas but final results will be obscured by swelling which can last 4-6 weeks or longer. Final results are determined 3-6 months postoperatively.
The goal of SmartLipo is to remove unwanted body fat and slightly tighten the skin to improve body contours.
What to Expect
During a SmartLipo procedure, a special probe is inserted into the treatment area that emits laser energy, melting fatty deposits for easier removal. Here is a quick guide for what to expect before, during, and after SmartLipo.
- Stop taking blood thinning medications for 2 week
- Stop smoking 4 weeks before and after
- Stop all diet medicine, ephedrines, asthma, or thyroid medicine 2 days prior
- No caffeine after midnight day of procedure
- Incision made near treatment area
- Treatment area infiltrated with tumescent fluid
- Probe inserted which emits laser energy to break down fat
- Cannula inserted to suction away emulsified fat
- Compression garment applied
Following a SmartLipo procedure it is common for the treatment area to be swollen for up to 4-6 weeks or longer depending on the extent of the procedure. It may take as long as 3-6 months to see final results from the procedure.
The ideal candidate for SmartLipo has fatty deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise with moderate skin laxity but not loose, hanging skin.
