About Marie B. Somogyi, MD
Dr. Somogyi was born in Manchester, England, and moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan at a young age. Her attention to detail was evident early on when she won a national handwriting competition. She attended the University of Notre Dame as a scholar athlete on the varsity rowing team and graduated with a major in Pre-Professional Studies and Psychology. In addition to her academic and athletic pursuits, Dr. Somogyi honed her creative aptitude in the art department. She attended the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago where she graduated with Honors in Research. During her time at Loyola, she received many accolades, including the Stamm Scholarship for her dedication and service to the Department of Ophthalmology along with competitive research grants from the Richard A. Perritt Foundation and the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness. She was also fortunate to have met her husband, Jason, in medical school. She completed her internship at Presence Resurrection Hospital in Chicago and residency at Loyola University Medical Center, where she was elected chief resident. During residency, Dr. Somogyi served as an ophthalmology advocacy ambassador for the State of Illinois to Congress in Washington, D.C. Dr. Somogyi was then chosen from many highly competitive applicants to pursue her passion in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery as an American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) accredited fellow at TOC Eye and Face, where she performed thousands of surgical procedures. She also completed an American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) accredited fellowship focusing on facial cosmetic surgery. Dr. Somogyi has been very active in advancing the science of ophthalmology publishing numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. She has presented her work at many national meetings, including the ASOPRS and AACS annual meetings, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. Her research has been selected as “Best Presentation” at multiple meetings. She has also been awarded the prestigious Cosmetic Surgery Foundation Grant Award. Dr. Somogyi is dedicated to providing exceptional care for her patients, in Texas and abroad. She recently traveled with the “About Face” foundation to Vietnam, where she performed nearly 70 procedures in a week, focusing on congenital facial defects. Aside from work, she enjoys being active through running and playing sports, traveling, cooking, new restaurants, and spending time with friends and family.
