About John D. Tieken, DDS
J. Derek Tieken, DDS has earned lots of accolades and honors in his 30 years years as a dentist—and before that, while earning his degree from the University of Texas School of Dentistry in Houston. President of his fourth-year class, Dr. Tieken delivered the commencement address. His dental practice, Tieken Smiles Dentistry, has been recognized as a ""Best Dentist"" by Bay Area Houston Magazine for 18 years in a row. And it earned a spot on H-Texas Magazine's ""Top Dentists"" list from 2010 to 2016. In 2014, Tieken Smiles Dentistry was selected as Practice of the Year by Next Level, a dental consulting and training organization. Dr. Tieken was named a Texas Super Dentist in 2019 & 2020 by Texas Monthly. He was named a 2019 & 2020 Top Dentist by Houstonia magazine. He was awarded 2019 Smile Source Practice of Excellence Award. Dr. Tieken has also appeared on Consumers' Research Council of America's list of top dentists in the U.S. But there is more to dentistry than awards. Dr. Tieken has always had a passion for dentistry and knew he wanted to practice at a young age. He continues to be fascinated by the connection between a healthy mouth and a healthy body. This shows in his work, through his focus on improving his patients' overall well-being. He takes time to build close relationships with his patients and provide each and every one of them with personalized care. Dr. Tieken enjoys continuing to grow in his dental profession and being on the cutting edge. He stays up-to-date on the latest dental trends by taking courses at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. Dr. Tieken is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He is a longtime participant in its Give Back a Smile program, which provides restorative dentistry services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Dr. Tieken loves his local community. He established his dental practice just 10 miles away from where he grew up. And he participates in many community service projects such as providing dental screenings to area school children. In his free time, Dr. Tieken enjoys traveling with his wife, Lori, reading and writing, being outdoors, and boating. He also enjoys following sports, especially his alma mater Baylor University and The University of Mississippi where his daughter attends.
