Labia Augmentation with Fat Transfer
- avg. recovery
About the Procedure
Vaginal rejuvenation addresses a number of sexual health concerns from internal laxity to sagging skin and incontinence. Another concern that occurs with age is volume loss in the labia. Aging decreases collagen production causing sagging and wrinkled skin all over the body, including the vulva. Labia augmentation, or labial puffing, can increase the size of the labia majora for a younger, more rejuvenated appearance. Labia augmentation can be achieved with dermal filler, however, fat grafting is an alternative option that can have longer lasting results. The first step of a labia augmentation with fat transfer procedure is performing liposuction in order to harvest the fat. Liposuction is typically performed on the stomach, thighs, or hips, although fat can be harvested from anywhere on the body with excess fat deposits. In order to ensure that the maximum amount of fat takes to the labia, the doctor will first clean the fat, purifying it of any cellular debris. The final step is to inject the fat into the labia. Using specialized, small syringes, the doctor will inject the fat into the labia at varying depths and in very small increments. By evenly placing the fat across the labia, the most amount of fat will survive. The labia may appear larger than desired after injection since the doctor will slightly overcompensate for some expected fat absorption.
The goal of labia augmentation is to create a more youthful appearance of the labia majora.
What to Expect
Labia augmentation with fat transfer, also called labia puffing, is a procedure that enhances the size or shape of the outer lips of the vagina. Here is a quick guide for what to expect before, during, and after a labia augmentation with fat transfer procedure.
- Stop taking blood thinning medications and birth control pills 10 days before
- Stop smoking 6 weeks before and after
- No alcohol days prior
- Local anesthesia
- Liposuction procedure to harvest fat
- Fat is purified for injection
- Fat injected into various areas and depths within the labia
Following the procedure, expect some bruising and swelling which typically subsides in 5-10 days. Cool compresses can be used to decrease swelling. Patients are able to go back to work 2 days postoperatively and resume full activities within a week. Recovery time may vary depending on the extent of the liposuction procedure.
The ideal candidates for labia augmentation with fat transfer are women who are in good overall health who are seeking to restore a youthful appearance to the labia majora.
