About the Procedure

Last Updated: 11.24.2020

Women can experience inner and outer vaginal laxity due to a number of reasons, most commonly being pregnancy and age related issues. During childbirth, the vaginal canal stretches to accommodate a baby but will shrink back to its smaller size, although some women may feel their vagina is still “loose” or relaxed. With age, women may experience a drooping of the outer labia as collagen production slows and the skin becomes elongated. Radiofrequency (RF) energy can help to tighten lax skin and muscles for a younger appearance while also helping internal muscles to tighten. RF treatments can also help improve incontinence issues. Popular RF vaginal rejuvenation brands include ThermiVa, Geneveve, and Votiva. RF vaginal rejuvenation is non-invasive and does not require any numbing or anesthesia for the patient. The patient will lay comfortably on a table for the duration of the 15-30 minute treatment with the legs spread apart. The hand piece, which is a thin probe with an RF energy emitting tip, will be inserted into the vagina and gently moved back and forth, gradually getting up tissue. The hand piece can also be applied to the outer labia. Most patients only experience a tolerable, warming sensation and are able to resume all normal activity, including sex, the day of treatment. There is no downtime or recovery associated with the procedure.

The goal of radiofrequency vaginal rejuvenation is to address patient's sexual dissatisfaction, laxity of the labia (inner and outer), and incontinence.
