But the real question is, do they really work? We’ve spoken to dermatologists Dr. Marisa Garshick [Dr. Marisa Garshick](https://aedit.com/provider/marisa-garshick-md-313) and Dr. Amy Spizuoco [Dr. Amy Spizuoco](https://aedit.com/provider/amy-spizuoco-19341)and Dr. William A. Kennedy III  to get the inside track on neuropeptides in skincare.


### **What are neuropeptides?**

“Neuropeptides are an innovative skincare ingredient due to their unique ability to interact with the skin at a cellular level, offering a range of potential benefits” says Dr. Kennedy.  From enhancing overall skin health and functionality, to promoting collagen synthesis and enhancing the skin's barrier function, vital for retaining moisture and protecting against environmental stressors neuropeptides have a dramatic effect on promoting healthy looking skin” Dr. Kennedy explains.  “Neuropeptides are a topical treatment that can sometimes be called ‘Nature's Botox’” Dr. Spizuoco explains. “They are a topical treatment that can help reduce wrinkles, inflammation, and promote younger-looking skin.” These protein-like molecules, that can give various signals to your body. In skincare, “they provide a signal to the body that an action needs to take place. In the case of neuropeptides, the peptides block the release of chemicals that are responsible for muscle movement that leads to fine lines and wrinkles,” Dr. Garshick tells us. Indeed, research carried out by scientists at Granada University suggests that certain neuropeptides may reduce the appearance of common signs of aging by targeting specific cellular processes. 

### **Where do neuropeptides get their names from?** 

The naming of neuropeptides can be confusing, so finding them in skincare labeling certainly isn’t always straightforward! While their scientific name is generally made up of the sequence of different amino acids that it is composed of, many of the most effective peptides that have been discovered are not marketed under brand names. For example, hexapeptide-8, one of the most frequently used neuropeptides in skincare, is marketed under the brand name Argireline®.

### **Which neuropeptide skincare formulations are most effective?** 

“As with many skincare products, serums tend to be most effective as serums often have a higher concentration of the active ingredient and may offer better penetration. Neuropeptides may also be combined with certain other ingredients like hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin to help plump the skin as well as other peptides that can help to firm the skin,” Dr. Gashick told us. When you’re shopping for skincare, look for products that include one of multiple of the following neuropeptides in their ingredient list:

- **Acetyl hexapeptide-8:** marketed under the brand name Argireline® is a synthetic peptide that is believed to work by inhibiting the release of neurotransmitters called catecholamines. It is understood that by blocking catecholamines Argireline may help reduce the appearance of fine lines that are associated with frequent repetitive movements such as crows feet or frown lines.

- **Matrixyl 3000:** the peptide is understood to work by gradually slowing down the glycation process, where sugars reduce the quality of the dermis (the second layer of the three-layer system that makes up your skin). The neuropeptide has also been found to reduce muscle contractions that lead to fine lines.

- **Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 (Pal-GHK):** aka Matrixyl 3000, is used in plumping anti-aging products, the peptide “stimulates collagen production and improves skin elasticity” [Dr. Spizuoco](https://aedit.com/provider/amy-spizuoco-19341) tells us. 

- **Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 (Pal-GQPR):** “reduces inflammation and supports skin’s firmness and elasticity”, [Dr. Spizuoco](https://aedit.com/provider/amy-spizuoco-19341) explains. You can generally find it in serums alongside other active ingredients that have been curated to reduce signs of aging.

- **Pentapeptides:** these peptides actually have five amino acids, and they can help improve the appearance of skin by boosting moisture absorption. They are often associated with hydrating ingredients to help maintain the healthy, youthful glow that we all seek. 

- **SNAP-8:** this elongation of acetyl hexapeptide-8 is reportedly up to 30% more effective than its predecessor.

### **What skin concerns can neuropeptides address?**

The primary benefit of adding neuropeptides to your skincare routine is addressing signs of aging at their root cause. By sending messages to the muscles that contract and accentuate fine lines, peptides are an excellent ally in fighting wrinkles. They could be of particular interest to those who are sensitive to retinol but who still want to take steps to prevent early signs of aging. [Dr. Garshick](https://aedit.com/provider/marisa-garshick-md-313) explains: “Neuropeptides may be used as an alternative to retinol to help improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in someone unable to tolerate retinol, even in their 20s and 30s.” But patients with more advanced signs of aging could still benefit from using them too, she says. “They can also be incorporated as individuals get older and lines may become deeper to help make the lines appear softer and smoother.”

### **What is the difference between neuropeptides and neuromodulators?**

If you’re looking into antiaging skincare, chances are you have probably come across both terms. While they sound similar, their mechanisms are quite different. Neuromodulators ([Botox®](https://aedit.com/procedure/botox), [Dysport®](https://aedit.com/procedure/dysportr), [Daxxify®](https://www.daxxify.com/), etc.) are injectables that work by blocking certain signals that allow muscles to contract. The mechanism is similar, though not the same, for neuropeptides. “Neuropeptides are peptides that are released as chemical messengers from nerve cells,” [Dr. Spizuoco](https://aedit.com/provider/amy-spizuoco-19341) explained. “They act either in an endocrine manner, where they reach their target cells via the bloodstream, or a paracrine manner, as co-transmitters modulating the function of neurotransmitters”, she added. Neuropeptides are incorporated into topical skincare products to have a similar result as injectables, but the results aren’t as pronounced or as long-lasting. “Neuropeptides offer a great option for someone who isn’t yet ready for injectables or prefers to avoid injectables,” says [Dr. Garshick](https://aedit.com/provider/marisa-garshick-md-313). “While they will not deliver the same results as neuromodulators like Botox, they can be a good option and can be helpful to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Neuropeptides also have a role to be used in conjunction with neuromodulators as a complementary treatment and may be considered a form of maintenance,” she added. Says Dr. Kennedy, “while both neuropeptides and neuromodulators play crucial roles in the nervous system, neuropeptides are more specialized in direct neural communication and specific responses, whereas neuromodulators broadly adjust neural activity and functional states.”

If you’re wondering why shea butter works so well as a moisturizer, Koestline points out that it is an emollient due to its high lipid content. “It helps add lipids back into your skin barrier, it has good water-binding properties, and it also absorbs rapidly into the skin,” she explains. “It helps keep the skin moisturized for a long time.” And, while you wouldn’t consider shea butter an ‘anti-aging’ ingredient, per say, the hydrating benefits can have a smoothing and plumping effect on crepey or wrinkled complexions. It’s the epitome of self care in every movie montage, as nothing symbolizes ‘me time’ quite like a sheet mask. Providing a few minutes of solace to give your skin (and body), a little rest, the serum-drenched masks incentivize a moment to slow down while working overtime to give the skin a hydrating boost of good-for-you ingredients. Though many see sheet masks as a fun add-on, they are much more than a 10-minute self care detour – the benefits are truly there. Here’s what the experts have to say on this skincare favorite and how to incorporate it into your routine. 

## **Why Sheet Masks Are Worth Using** 

It’s not up to us to dictate what should or shouldn’t be a part of someone’s routine, skincare should – first and foremost – be based on individual needs, but to say that sheet masks are frivolous would be unjust to their benefits. So, what makes them so great? “Sheet masks allow active ingredients time to absorb into your skin by letting the ingredients sit longer because the ingredients are ‘occluded’ by the mask,” explains [Caroline Chang, MD](https://riderminstitute.com/our_staff/), a board certified dermatologist and founder of the [Rhode Island Dermatology Institute](https://riderminstitute.com/). By keeping the ingredients locked on the skin without a chance to evaporate, the solution can penetrate deeper and in higher concentrations adds Dr. Chang. While your routine may be packed with lotions and potions galore, sheet masks aren’t a replacement for other skincare essentials and can work in conjunction with the other steps. They can complement any routine because “a standard serum doesn’t allow your skin to absorb nearly as much of the active ingredients,” explains Elina Wang, CEO, and co-founder of [ESW Beauty](eswbeauty.com). Translation: if you need a boost of hydration, workhorse ingredients, or potent actives, add a sheet mask to your weekly regimen. 
## **Ways To Enhance Your Use of Sheet Masks** 

You can wash your face and put on any sheet mask you’d like, or you can do this. 

1. **Find The Right Mask**: With so many to choose from, where do you start? Dr. Chang suggests bio-cellulose over a traditional sheet mask stating that “bio-cellulose clings to your skin more tightly allowing the ingredients to absorb even more effectively than a sheet mask.” Additionally, this technology allows the masks to retain more moisture, but if a bio-cellulose option isn’t within reach, don’t write off the tried and true version. 
2. **Prep Yourself**: Cleansing is always the first step explains Dr. Chang. A clean canvas is a great start to ensure there’s no debris standing in the way of the skin getting those potent ingredients. However, it's not the only prep step you can take. Wang recommends popping the mask into the fridge to give it a cryotherapy touch. Apart from helping with inflammation and swelling, Wang mentions the cold mask can "enhance the overall experience with a more cooling effect, perfect for the start of your morning routine.” 
3. **Use As Instructed**: It may be self-explanatory, the instructions are on the packaging after all, but, the key here is to be mindful of the ingredients. “A mask with brightening ingredients might be more irritating to the skin and should be used less frequently,” notes Dr. Chang. While most are great for all skin types, sheet masks should still be selected with the same caution as other aspects of the routine.

How To Maximize A Sheet Mask

As a beauty editor, being non-committal to skincare products and tools is a part of the job. While there are lotions, potions, products, ingredients, and devices we know are tried and true, it’s also our duty to test out the latest launches to stay abreast of the innovations on the market. Consider it research. Therefore, by keeping my vanity open to new products, maintaining a curated routine has been a challenge. Yes, I am mindful of the ingredients I use and how they play together, but, I am not as selective on which cleanser or moisturizer I will use from week to week. So, it comes as no surprise that most of my [twenties](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-skincare-routine-products-ingredients-for-20s) were spent experimenting and prioritizing product testing over tailoring a personal [routine](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-maintain-youthful-skin-in-your-20s) – until I hit [30](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-skincare-routine-products-ingredients-for-30s).  

Knowing that my skin wont be smooth forever as fine lines, dullness, and pigmentation are a part of life, I knew it was time to do what I’ve been dreading: sticking to a routine with tretinoin. Because adding a prescription-strength vitamin A into the regimen requires a methodic approach (and patience), my hesitancy prevented me from diving into the deep end. Three months ago, I decided to finally incorporate the holy grail of youth-preserving ingredients into my routine, and here’s how that journey went. 

## **What is Tretinoin?** 

For the newbies, tretinoin is “[a vitamin A](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-vitamin-a-retinol-retinoids-in-skincare) derivative, a type of retinoid that is available as a prescription,” explains [Marisa Garshick, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/marisa-garshick-md-313), a board certified dermatologist based in New York. The workhorse ingredient works by regulating skin cell turnover and can help prevent and treat acne, explains Dr. Garshick. But, the fun doesn’t stop there. “Additionally, because it can also help boost collagen production, it can help to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, in addition to acne scarring,” she adds. To simply put it, the prescription-strength ingredient “can help to improve overall skin tone and texture.” 

The ingredient requires a prescription, and while Dr. Garshick was not my personal dermatologist, her insight is invaluable when it comes to all things skincare.  

## **How To Add Tretinoin To Your Skincare Routine** 

What kept me from starting sooner was the barrier to entry, it is a process that requires more than a prescription to truly make it work. Below are some of Dr. Garshick's tips and recommendations for starting tretinoin.  

### Do
- **Start Slow**: When adding any new product into your routine, especially one as potent as tretinoin, modesty is key. A pea-sized drop of the ivory cream is recommended once a week to build up a tolerance, and with time, the amount can be adjusted. As we always say, let your skin guide you and tell you what it needs. “It is best to incorporate tretinoin into a nighttime routine and, to start off using it just a few times per week and then increase the frequency as tolerated.” 
-  **Limit Exfoliants**: Over-exfoliating the skin can cause a weakened skin barrier, loss of moisture, and therefore, more breakouts to arise. “It is best to avoid using any ingredients that can be harsh on the skin at the same time as tretinoin, such as exfoliating acids, including salicylic acid, and benzoyl peroxide – unless directed to do so.”
- **Be Patient**: From purging to causing irritation, tretinoin is fickle as the barrier of entry is almost like an initiation process. Because the skin’s experiencing increased cell turnover, 

### Don’t 
- **Skip the SPF**: Sun protection should not only be the first line of defense in any skincare routine, it is vital when using a chemical exfoliant. “It is important to always be good about sun protection when incorporating a retinoid into your routine and wearing daily sunscreen,” adds Dr. Garshick.  
- **Worry About A Purge**: Purging, as it is lovingly known, is the process of the skin breaking out which may seem paradoxical considering the ingredient's efficacy when treating acne. However, this is perfectly normal and to be expected. If the acne persists, speak with a trusted dermatologist to adjust the routine or switch to a retinol alternative (hello, [bakuchiol](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-bakuchiol-in-skincare)).  
- **Complicate Things**: It’s natural to want to rush the process, the benefits are numerous, after all. During the adjustment period, focus on the basics and how your skin adjusts before incorporating additional products. “I recommend applying tretinoin after cleansing and before moisturizing, but for those with dry or sensitive skin, it may be used after applying moisturizer which may help reduce the potential for irritation in some individuals,” Dr. Gashick advises. 

## **My Experience With Tretinoin** 

We often discuss the timing of starting a product, the importance of doing a patch test, and the mindful approach required to ensure all ingredients work in harmony, so, to do this right, I overhauled my routine. My first step was to start tret during the winter months due to the decreased sun exposure I would have as my skin acclimates. My second step was cutting out other physical exfoliants. Due to tret being a heavy-duty chemical exfoliant, I opted to shelve my favorite [AHAs](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-topical-alpha-hydroxy-acids-in-skincare) and [BHAs](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-beta-hydroxy-acids-salicylic-acid-in-skincare) for the time being. Because of my hesitancy to stick to a set routine, I wasn’t going to take any risks with over-exfoliating. Here is a breakdown of my AM and PM routines. 

**AM Routine**

Now, to provide clarity on my skin, it’s normal, not prone to acne, and has very little pigmentation. My reasoning for starting tretinoin was to address any fine lines and wrinkles that may arise with time, as my belief has always been that it’s better to prevent than correct. 

During the first few weeks of my journey, the [irritation](https://aedit.com/aedition/skincare-ingredient-alternatives-for-retinol-retinoids) was minimal, and though I was prepared for a purge (cue dramatic music), it never came. Rather than a noticeable breakout, my skin went through a few weeks of whiteheads popping up at inopportune times, slight redness here and there, and more dryness than I usually experience during the colder season. Overall, my fear of the unexpected proved to be just that, a fear.   

I have to admit that due to my being a regular person, my routine did waiver as I would try a new product on days when I wasn’t using tret. My goal was to be litigious throughout the process so as to not throw any curveballs, but I did experiment sporadically with a new gentle mask or two. I maintained my rule to avoid all other chemical exfoliants and was consistent with my SPF application (and re-application). 

After three months, I can confidently say that my skin looks better than I expected. My primary concerns (fine lines forming on my forehead and marionettes) were not as prominent as my skin adjusted to tret. 

## **The Takeaway** 

After carrying what felt like a dirty little secret of not incorporating vitamin A in my routine for quite some time, I am happy to report that the ingredient is all it’s cracked up to be. Offering a noticeable change to my skin in a matter of months, tretinoin has provided me with clearer skin, a smoother complexion, and fewer breakouts. Though the adjustment period felt like a waiting game, trusting the process proved to be worth it.
