In a world where anti-aging skincare trends change each season, it can be really tough to keep up with the newest ‘it’ ingredients - and even tougher to know if there’s any merit to including them in your daily routine. One of these buzz-worthy ingredients are neuropeptides: small chains of amino acids are responsible for acting as chemical messengers that can reportedly reduce signs of aging without the need for injectables. But the real question is, do they really work? We’ve spoken to dermatologists Dr. Marisa Garshick [Dr. Marisa Garshick](https://aedit.com/provider/marisa-garshick-md-313) and Dr. Amy Spizuoco [Dr. Amy Spizuoco](https://aedit.com/provider/amy-spizuoco-19341)and Dr. William A. Kennedy III  to get the inside track on neuropeptides in skincare.


### **What are neuropeptides?**

“Neuropeptides are an innovative skincare ingredient due to their unique ability to interact with the skin at a cellular level, offering a range of potential benefits” says Dr. Kennedy.  From enhancing overall skin health and functionality, to promoting collagen synthesis and enhancing the skin's barrier function, vital for retaining moisture and protecting against environmental stressors neuropeptides have a dramatic effect on promoting healthy looking skin” Dr. Kennedy explains.  “Neuropeptides are a topical treatment that can sometimes be called ‘Nature's Botox’” Dr. Spizuoco explains. “They are a topical treatment that can help reduce wrinkles, inflammation, and promote younger-looking skin.” These protein-like molecules, that can give various signals to your body. In skincare, “they provide a signal to the body that an action needs to take place. In the case of neuropeptides, the peptides block the release of chemicals that are responsible for muscle movement that leads to fine lines and wrinkles,” Dr. Garshick tells us. Indeed, research carried out by scientists at Granada University suggests that certain neuropeptides may reduce the appearance of common signs of aging by targeting specific cellular processes. 

### **Where do neuropeptides get their names from?** 

The naming of neuropeptides can be confusing, so finding them in skincare labeling certainly isn’t always straightforward! While their scientific name is generally made up of the sequence of different amino acids that it is composed of, many of the most effective peptides that have been discovered are not marketed under brand names. For example, hexapeptide-8, one of the most frequently used neuropeptides in skincare, is marketed under the brand name Argireline®.

### **Which neuropeptide skincare formulations are most effective?** 

“As with many skincare products, serums tend to be most effective as serums often have a higher concentration of the active ingredient and may offer better penetration. Neuropeptides may also be combined with certain other ingredients like hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin to help plump the skin as well as other peptides that can help to firm the skin,” Dr. Gashick told us. When you’re shopping for skincare, look for products that include one of multiple of the following neuropeptides in their ingredient list:

- **Acetyl hexapeptide-8:** marketed under the brand name Argireline® is a synthetic peptide that is believed to work by inhibiting the release of neurotransmitters called catecholamines. It is understood that by blocking catecholamines Argireline may help reduce the appearance of fine lines that are associated with frequent repetitive movements such as crows feet or frown lines.

- **Matrixyl 3000:** the peptide is understood to work by gradually slowing down the glycation process, where sugars reduce the quality of the dermis (the second layer of the three-layer system that makes up your skin). The neuropeptide has also been found to reduce muscle contractions that lead to fine lines.

- **Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 (Pal-GHK):** aka Matrixyl 3000, is used in plumping anti-aging products, the peptide “stimulates collagen production and improves skin elasticity” [Dr. Spizuoco](https://aedit.com/provider/amy-spizuoco-19341) tells us. 

- **Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 (Pal-GQPR):** “reduces inflammation and supports skin’s firmness and elasticity”, [Dr. Spizuoco](https://aedit.com/provider/amy-spizuoco-19341) explains. You can generally find it in serums alongside other active ingredients that have been curated to reduce signs of aging.

- **Pentapeptides:** these peptides actually have five amino acids, and they can help improve the appearance of skin by boosting moisture absorption. They are often associated with hydrating ingredients to help maintain the healthy, youthful glow that we all seek. 

- **SNAP-8:** this elongation of acetyl hexapeptide-8 is reportedly up to 30% more effective than its predecessor.

### **What skin concerns can neuropeptides address?**

The primary benefit of adding neuropeptides to your skincare routine is addressing signs of aging at their root cause. By sending messages to the muscles that contract and accentuate fine lines, peptides are an excellent ally in fighting wrinkles. They could be of particular interest to those who are sensitive to retinol but who still want to take steps to prevent early signs of aging. [Dr. Garshick](https://aedit.com/provider/marisa-garshick-md-313) explains: “Neuropeptides may be used as an alternative to retinol to help improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in someone unable to tolerate retinol, even in their 20s and 30s.” But patients with more advanced signs of aging could still benefit from using them too, she says. “They can also be incorporated as individuals get older and lines may become deeper to help make the lines appear softer and smoother.”

### **What is the difference between neuropeptides and neuromodulators?**

If you’re looking into antiaging skincare, chances are you have probably come across both terms. While they sound similar, their mechanisms are quite different. Neuromodulators ([Botox®](https://aedit.com/procedure/botox), [Dysport®](https://aedit.com/procedure/dysportr), [Daxxify®](https://www.daxxify.com/), etc.) are injectables that work by blocking certain signals that allow muscles to contract. The mechanism is similar, though not the same, for neuropeptides. “Neuropeptides are peptides that are released as chemical messengers from nerve cells,” [Dr. Spizuoco](https://aedit.com/provider/amy-spizuoco-19341) explained. “They act either in an endocrine manner, where they reach their target cells via the bloodstream, or a paracrine manner, as co-transmitters modulating the function of neurotransmitters”, she added. Neuropeptides are incorporated into topical skincare products to have a similar result as injectables, but the results aren’t as pronounced or as long-lasting. “Neuropeptides offer a great option for someone who isn’t yet ready for injectables or prefers to avoid injectables,” says [Dr. Garshick](https://aedit.com/provider/marisa-garshick-md-313). “While they will not deliver the same results as neuromodulators like Botox, they can be a good option and can be helpful to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Neuropeptides also have a role to be used in conjunction with neuromodulators as a complementary treatment and may be considered a form of maintenance,” she added. Says Dr. Kennedy, “while both neuropeptides and neuromodulators play crucial roles in the nervous system, neuropeptides are more specialized in direct neural communication and specific responses, whereas neuromodulators broadly adjust neural activity and functional states.”

As with any update to your skincare routine, it's absolutely essential to approach neuropeptides with a touch of caution by slowly introducing them to your routine. What Are Neuropeptides, and Do You Need to Add Them to Your Skincare Routine?

It’s everyone’s dreaded Sunday task — cleaning those makeup brushes and sponges. We’ve been known to rewrite it onto our to-do list for, well, too many weeks. You simply snap it into the vented ball it comes with before washing. 

But what about your go-to non-machine washable sponges and brushes? How often should we be washing our makeup tools and what are some hard-earned tips and tricks from top makeup artists? Here, we tapped ophthalmologist [Nicky (Shetal) Shah, MD](http://instagram.com/chiefeyeofficer), and makeup artists [Ashleigh Ciucci](https://www.instagram.com/beauteousmax/) and [Ricky Wilson](http://instagram.com/rickywilsonbeauty) to get best practices on everything from how often to exactly *how* to clean our makeup tools. 

## **How Often You Should Clean Makeup Tools**
If your face is the only one your makeup brushes are touching, Ciucci says you can get away with cleaning them once a week. “For foundation, concealer, powder, blush, and brow brushes, clean once a week with a liquid brush cleanser like [Cinema Secrets Makeup Brush Cleaner](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sephora.com%2Fproduct%2Fmakeup-brush-cleaner-P390961),” she says. “If you’re using different shadows from day to day, clean them daily with the same cleanser.” Once a month, opt for a deep clean with a solid cleanser (more on that below).

When it comes to sponges that are used on your face, Ciucci recommends more frequent washes. “If you use a reusable sponge, clean it every other day with a solid cleanser to prevent breakouts,” she urges.

Needless to say, the [eye area is among the most sensitive](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-the-skin-around-the-eyes-with-skincare-and-non-surgical-cosmetic-procedures) on the face. Dr. Shah says that makeup brushes and sponges that are used around the eye should be cleaned every one to two weeks, depending on how dirty they are. “Many companies offer recommendations on how often the brushes and sponges should be cleaned, based on their own micro-testing,” Dr. Shah says. 

Using contaminated makeup brushes and sponges in the eye area can cause irritation like dry eyes. It can also lead to clogging of the lashline oil glands, which will impact eyelash health, she adds. In addition regular cleansing, Dr. Shah advises looking for makeup brushes with fibers that have been pre-treated with preservatives, “since this can help delay, but not prevent, contamination.” 

## **How to Wash Your Makeup Tools**
It should come as no surprise that makeup artists are experts at thoroughly cleansing the tools in their kit. “Even before COVID-19, I was super OCD about cleaning my makeup brushes and tools,” Wilson says. “It is vital to clean brushes after every use for artists, however, for people at home, I would say once a week or, at minimum, twice a month.” With that in mind, it’s important to know that there are different ways to clean your sponges and brushes depending on the circumstances. Below are pro tips for both quick cleaning and more thorough bathing.

### **For a Quick Refresh**
If you are looking to quickly disinfect your tools, Ciucci likes to pour a bit of [Cinema Secrets Makeup Brush Cleaner](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sephora.com%2Fproduct%2Fmakeup-brush-cleaner-P390961) into a small cup, dip her smaller brushes into the solution, and swirl lightly on a lint-free towel until clean. “Once you’ve cleaned your smaller brushes, pour the remaining liquid onto your towel and swirl your large fluffier brushes into the towel until clean,” she says. 

This process is ideal if you need to use the same tools for different purposes. “Cinema Secrets contains alcohol, so they will be disinfected and dry quickly — great if you want to use the same brush in the same sitting,” Ciucci adds. Since they’re not dripping wet, you can dry them standing up or laying down, she says.

### **For a Deep Clean**
Even if you are following Ciucci’s advice and quickly cleaning tools every few days, she suggests a deeper shampoo once a month with a solid cleanser to remove any product build-up and excess debris. Her technique? Swirl your wet brush into the silk and massage gently with your fingers. Rinse, gently squeeze out excess water, and lay flat on a towel to dry. For sponges, she says to wet and swirl into the solid cleanser. Massage gently between your palms until the suds run clear, squeeze out excess water, and lay on a towel to dry. 

If you prefer a liquid soap, Wilson has you covered. Pre-COVID, he opted for Dawn dish soap and warm water. Now, he’s using [Dial Antibacterial Liquid Hand Soap](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.walmart.com%2Fip%2FDial-Antibacterial-Liquid-Hand-Soap-Refill-Spring-Water-52-Ounce%2F20700155) and warm water, for added germ and bacteria fighting. Wilson turns the lid of a Tupperware upside down and fills it with warm water and a few drops of Dial to make some suds. “I prefer the shallow depth of a lid versus a bowl, which can drown the brushes,” he says. An added benefit? “The groove on the inside of the lid also doubles as a brush scrubber,” he notes. After scrubbing, Wilson rinses the brushes in warm running water to remove suds, reshapes them, and leaves the brushes flat on the countertop to dry overnight.

It’s no surprise that new [research](https://www.nutraingredients-usa.com/Article/2020/03/13/CBD-The-most-well-researched-Instagram-trend) shows cannabidiol (CBD) is the most-searched wellness trend with some 500,000 Google scholarly articles and more than eight million Instagram posts about the compound. Today, we’re learning that the therapeutic benefits of CBD are just the tip of the iceberg, as there are many more cannabinoids to be explored. 

“With current interest in CBD, we have a renewed interest in plant-based medicine,” says David Bearman, MD, executive vice president of the [American Academy of Cannabinoid Medicine](https://aacmsite.org/) and coauthor of [Cannabis Medicine: A Guide to the Practice of Cannabinoid Medicine](https://www.amazon.com/Cannabis-Medicine-Guide-Practice-Cannabinoid/dp/1690856963). “Before World War II, about 95 percent of all prescriptions were compounded (specifically made for you) and not manufactured. Today, it’s the other way around — we’re making more synthetic and semi-synthetic medications. This interest is making us go back and take a look.”

To better understand the current and future uses of cannabinoids in the beauty, wellness, and medical industries, we’ve put together a comprehensive guide to the cannabis-derived compounds.

## **What Are Cannabinoids?**
Cannabinoids are naturally occurring compounds found in the flowers and stems of the Cannabis sativa plant (a.k.a. hemp). While researchers are only on the cusp of finding out how many there really are, the plant has over 500 different molecules and at least 140 of them are cannabinoids. 

With CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) being the most popular, cannabigerol (CBG), cannabinol (CBN), and cannabichromene (CBC) are beginning to stand out for their medicinal benefits as well. “The chemical structures of the compounds are very similar, so it’s not surprising they have overlapping therapeutic effects,” Dr. Bearman explains. “While you’ll begin to see these as ingredients being called out on product labels, know that if you have a full-spectrum product, you’re already reaping their benefits.”

### **What Are the Benefits of Cannabinoids?**
The benefits of cannabinoids like CBD seem endless, but a lack of clinical research and FDA approval on products challenges claims. Evidence suggests cannabinoids can relieve pain, help with weight loss, improve sleep, and treat post-traumatic stress disorder, in addition to reducing inflammation, anxiety, and depression. Medicinal use is also linked to killing cancer cells, controlling nausea caused by chemotherapy, regulating seizures, treating autism, and relieving the symptoms of multiple sclerosis.  

### **How Do Cannabinoids Work?**
Cannabinoids work with your endocannabinoid system (ECS) — arguably the largest neurotransmitter system in your body — to help it maintain homeostasis (read: balance) by stimulating or blocking the CB1 and CB2 receptors. CB1 receptors are most commonly found in the central nervous system and act as moderators for your mood, function, perception of pain and memory. CB2 receptors, meanwhile, are found on immune system cells and focus on moderating inflammation.

### **Do Cannabinoids Make You High?** 
When it comes to mass-market cannabinoid products like skincare, topicals, and ingestibles, the short answer is no. There are governmental limits on the use of THC, which is the naturally occurring chemical compound known for producing the psychoactive effect that marijuana is known for.  

“Most people associate cannabis products with getting stoned,” says Brooke Alpert, MS, RD, CDN and founder of [Daily Habit CBD](https://www.dailyhabitcbd.com/). “But when it comes to industrial hemp, the federal law is that products have to have below 0.3 percent of THC in them.” As a matter of fact, THC in that small dose makes other cannabinoids more impactful. Even though this limit is put in place on a federal level, CBD isn’t legal in every state, so it remains a state-by-state mandate.

## **What to Look For in Cannabinoid Products**
Given the lack of oversight and regulation, it should come as no surprise that it is important to do a bit of research before clicking ‘add to cart’ on the cannabinoid product you’ve been eyeing. Some of the information you will want to confirm may be on a brand’s website instead of the product label, and Alpert says there are three things you should look for to ensure you’re purchasing an effective cannabinoid product. 

### **1. Full Spectrum**
“Many cannabinoids have therapeutic values, and the combination of using them together is more effective than using a single cannabinoid alone,” Dr. Bearman says. Full-spectrum products contain over 400 compounds that act synergistically to create an “entourage effect” where the chemicals all support one another and increase efficacy. While there are some health benefits when an isolate like CBD is extracted and used alone, they’re considered inferior to full-spectrum products when it comes to delivering impactful results. “Coming from a dietician, I like to look at this like [vitamin C](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-topical-vitamin-c-in-skincare),” Alpert explains. “It’s great if it’s extracted. But if you eat a whole orange, you get vitamin C, antioxidants, fiber, and everything else.”

### **2. Organically Grown, USA Hemp**
The soil the product is grown in can make all of the difference in how it performs. Each country has their own regulation for what ‘organically grown’ means. Since hemp is a bioaccumulator (i.e. it sucks toxins from the soil), it’s often used to clean soil from toxic spills. As a result, you want to make sure it’s grown in safe, healthy soil.

### **3. Third-Party Testing**
You can normally find a certificate of analysis (COA) on a company’s website. “Even if you can read what these tests mean, it’s important to know that they’re offering them,” Alpert explains.  The more transparent a company in this industry is, the better.

## ** The Future of Cannabinoids** 
For starters, research, research, and more [research](https://aedit.com/aedition/category/read-the-label). “We’ve really dropped the ball in this country when it comes to studying the potential benefits of this plant,” Dr. Bearman says. Many of the current studies tend to focus on learning more about the adverse effects rather than the benefits.  “When it comes to future research, it needs to be unbiased,” he says. “State and federal research money needs to be used to find out how these molecules affect the brain.”

The industry also needs regulating. “I make my own cannabis products, and I want regulations,” Alpert admits. Just like the beauty and wellness industries, having strict regulations to follow would help to cut through the current clutter and ensure consumers have access to high-quality products. 

On the medicinal front, Dr. Bearman hopes more education becomes available to those who are pursuing a career in healthcare. “Medical schools should include a course or courses on cannabis, cannabinoids, and the ECS in their core curriculum and add questions in the National Medical Board Exam on the topic,” he says, adding it will motivate medical students to feel more confident in exploring the option of using cannabis to help treat any number of mental and physical conditions.

“Giving ourselves guilt-free permission for proper skincare and ongoing skin treatments is a great benefit,” says medical aesthetician Candace Marino (a.k.a. [The LA Facialist](https://thelafacialist.com/)) of our increased time at home. If you’re used to making regular visits to your aesthetician or dermatologist’s office, social distancing may mean your skin is not getting its routine TLC. But, not to worry, there is plenty you can do to keep your complexion clear and bright using products in your own vanity. 

While many dermatologists and plastic surgeons are offering virtual consultations to advise on cosmetic concerns during this time, we’ve also assembled a panel of seven top skincare experts to share their at-home skincare wisdom:

Just in case you need another reminder, the handwashing rules apply to skincare as well. “Before you start your skincare routine, it is extremely important that you wash your hands thoroughly for 20 to 30 seconds before touching your face in order to minimize exposure to coronavirus,” Dr. Palm shares.

With clean hands in tow, keep scrolling for six ways to improve your skincare routine!

## **1. Maintain Your Skincare Routine**
*Just because you may be skipping makeup (more on that below), doesn’t mean you should be forgoing your skincare routine. In fact, there is no better time to add an extra step (or five) to your regimen. And, yes, sunscreen is still a good idea — even if you are inside all day.*

**Candace Marino**: “The key to keeping your skin on point during this break from our regular routines is to be consistent with your regimen. In the morning, be sure you're still applying your antioxidant serums that help to prevent damage from free radicals and environmental factors like pollution and UV rays. Even though most of us are staying inside, SPF is still a good idea. You are still getting UV rays through the windows, and a good SPF will help protect you from the damaging rays from blue light (TV, computer, phone) and indoor lighting. At night, ensure you're still cleansing properly — even if you haven't worn makeup or left the house. The skin produces oils throughout the day that can get trapped in the pores and cause breakouts. Be sure to remove this before applying your nighttime skincare.” 

**Dr. Spizuoco**: “Being stuck in your apartment — likely with radiator heat — will dry out skin, so stick with your regular skincare routine but add a moisturizer with vitamin c and [hyaluronic acid](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-hyaluronic-acid-in-skincare-dermal-filler) to help keep the skin healthy. Continuing with your normal routine should also include washing regularly (i.e. twice daily).”

**Dr. Palm**: “Rather than experimenting with unknown masks or yet-to-be-tried chemical peels, which have a much higher chance of causing skin irritation or a contact allergy, consider your cleansing routine and how you can amend it to allow skin to breathe and absorb other skincare products more readily.”

**Dr. Karcher**: “Patients with acne can use some form of salicylic acid, along with gentle cleansing and a retinol at night, while anti-aging routines may include specific products like antioxidants in the morning and a retinol at night. Gentile facial masks and massage help increase circulation and exercise is also great for the skin.”

## **2. Try a DIY Facial**
*While you can’t fully replicate a professional skincare treatment at home, there are plenty of over-the-counter products that deliver brightening, clarifying, and rejuvenating effects. As with most things in life, practice makes perfect, so creating and maintaining a routine that works for you and your skin concerns is key to seeing both immediate and long-term results.*

**Renée Rouleau**: “The idea is to go above and beyond your everyday skincare routine by giving it professional results with the extras. People shy away from using their retinoids because they don’t want to be out in public with their skin being dry and peeling. Well, this is the perfect time to do more advanced treatments due to not being in the public eye. This is also a great time to do an [at-home facial](https://blog.reneerouleau.com/how-to-give-your-skin-an-at-home-facial/) and use some products that you may not normally have the time to do. **Candace Marino**: “Now is a great time to add things into your skincare routine that you've maybe been hesitant about trying — like a [retinol](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-vitamin-a-retinol-retinoids-in-skincare) because it’s known to cause redness, dryness, and sensitivity during the retinization phase. Or maybe you've been struggling with melasma or stubborn post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) from acne and haven't yet tried a hydroquinone because your lifestyle finds you getting lots of sun exposure. Take advantage of this downtime by using anything that may cause a little irritation while you adjust. Making a DIY hydration mask or a sheet mask weekly will keep skin soft and supple.”

## **3. Skip Makeup**
*Ever heard of the idea of letting your skin ‘breathe’? Well, there is something to be said for giving your complexion a break from daily makeup application. Skipping foundation for even a couple days a week can improve the tone and texture of the skin.*
 
**Shani Darden**: “This is a great time to really see what works for your skin and what doesn’t. When you aren’t wearing makeup, you can better examine what’s working well for your skin. Some foundations can cause congestion, so you might find that your skin is more clear and balanced while not wearing makeup daily.”
 
**Renée Rouleau**: “It is well known that primers and liquid foundations — especially in oily, acne-prone skin types — can lead to bumps and breakouts. They can cause what are known as ‘closed comedones’ which often need to be extracted out by a professional. The silver lining for the skin when self quarantining is that you’re giving your skin a break from potential pore cloggers. However, it’s important to note that foundations, even if they don’t say they have an SPF in it, contain natural SPF ingredients like titanium dioxide. A benefit of makeup is that it will offer UV protection from damaging rays that come through windows in your home or apartment. This means that you’ll want to be extra diligent about wearing your daily sunscreen to keep your skin protected, since foundation isn’t giving an extra layer of protection.”

**Candace Marino**: “Skipping makeup is great for all skin types and allows the skin to take a break from the daily application and removal of unnecessary products. Certain types of makeup can be heavy and occlusive, which can slow down the skin's natural exfoliation process and speed up things like oil production. Both lead to clogged pores and congestion. Giving the skin a break will likely result in less congested pores and breakouts and will also allow for more radiant, hydrated skin.”

**Dr. Palm**: “Layers of makeup are more likely to clog pores and hair follicles; therefore, less makeup may mean clearer skin and less apparent comedones or blackheads. One important note: Some makeups — especially mineral-based ones — supply excellent sun protection with anti-inflammatory properties. If this is the makeup you use, make sure you are still using a tinted sunscreen or physical sunblock even if inside. UV, high energy visible light, infrared light, and blue light exist even indoors, and your skin should be protected.”

## **4. Consider an At-Home Device**  
*Similar to over-the-counter topical skincare, at-home beauty tools don’t boast the same strength as their professional counterparts. But, that’s not to say that they don’t add value. From lifting and firming microcurrent to bacteria-busting LED light therapy, there is a device for just about every skin concern.*

**Dr. Palm**: “Sometimes, although we love at-home devices, we forget about them and they fall out of habit.  Now is the time at home to recharge your skincare devices and put them to use. Not only will it help keep you healthy, but it will likely save you from getting a pimple, too.*

**Candace Marino**: “Facialists have been preaching this since the beginning of time! When you touch your face you're literally transferring germs from every single thing you've touched directly onto your skin. Keeping your hands off your face prevents the spread of bacteria that can lead to inflammation, irritation, or other reactions. A best preventative practice is also to always wash your hands thoroughly first before cleansing your face at night or applying product.”
 
**Renée Rouleau**: “It is always best practice for the face to not be unnecessarily touching it and introducing germs. Bacteria leads to breakouts and may exacerbate them from touching your face. This is why cleansing the skin thoroughly at night is always recommended — even in non-virus times. Keeping your hands off your face allows the skin to be cleaner, which will only reduce potential issues.”

**Shani Darden**: “Touching your face exposes your skin to bacteria that can then turn into congestion and breakouts. It’s really important to limit touching your face at all times for this reason. I always keep alcohol wipes on hand so that I can regularly wipe down my phone and sunglasses for this same reason.”
 
## **6. Keep Stress Levels In Check** 
*Skin health isn’t just a reflection of what you are putting on the skin. Hormonal imbalances, diet, and, yes, stress can all reveal themselves on the skin, so learning how to manage anxiety will benefit more than just your mental health.* 

**Dr. Spizuoco**: “We know stress can cause acne, eczema, psoriasis, alopecia, and many other skin conditions to flare. Stress pulls our immune system in a direction away from it's normal function to suppress any skin conditions we are prone to. Here are my tips to counteract stress all the time, but now more than ever: 

1. **Take a Breath**: A moment of focused breathing can lower heart rate and normalize blood pressure.
2. **Take a Walk**: Even just around your apartment building. Visit a floor you've neer been on.
3. **FaceTime a Friend**: Connect or reconnect from a distance. 
4. [Do a Home Workout](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-fitness-classes-workouts-exercises-to-try-at-home): Many gyms have closed but are offering online classes. Even if your apartment is small, make some space to do some chair exercises. 
5. **Smile**: Studies show smiling alone releases serotonin in the brain, which stimulates happiness.”

**Dr. Rabach**: “Stress causes cortisol to surge in the body, which affects other hormone levels. Hormone level fluctuations cause acne breakouts. Also cortisol increases sebum production leading to acne. Try to relax, drink water and FaceTime with family and friends — it cuts down cell phone acne! Wear your hair up with fewer dry shampoos and products that can cause clogged pores. Do yoga and meditation or cook something ambitious you wouldn’t have time for. Take a bath. Catchup on your reading and movie lists.”

**Candace Marino**: “The skin is our largest organ and can show stress in many ways, such as acne and pigmentation, as well as eczema and psoriasis flare ups. In times of stress, hormones are released to alert us to take action, but not being able to manage stress can take a toll on our skin. When cortisol levels rise, our immune system becomes weakened and that's when we see exacerbation of these conditions. For general stress-related skincare and basic inflammation we may all experience during this time, I love a good [ice roller](https://www.sephora.com/product/ice-roller-P441048?icid2=products%20grid:p441048). Look for calming products with ingredients such as chamomile, calendula, buckthorn, and aloe vera. And, to calm the senses, breathe. Always remember to breathe.”

Brow Lamination

When it comes to eyebrows, my motto is: Don’t touch them. In fact, I might be the only woman in the world to never go through an over-tweezing phase — a beauty accomplishment that I am quite proud of.

As someone not born with the dark, bushy brows that perfectly frame Cara Delevigne’s face (to the contrary, mine are thin, light, and a little sparse), I avoid most interference except for the daily use of a pigmented pencil that adds color and definition. So, when I heard about an eyebrow treatment that is said to have the ability to turn anyone’s brows into Delevigne-worthy arches, I was skeptical but intrigued. Perhaps it was time to outsource my eternal desire for a beautifully abundant brow, for as my mother always says: “Good brows don’t happen by chance. They happen by appointment.” 

Promising arches that look thicker, glossier, and perpetually kempt, brow lamination is a needle-free alternative to [microblading](https://aedit.com/procedure/microblading) that produces less permanent results. With an approach to brow maintenance that could be described as nearly ascetic, my virgin brows were dreaming of a Cindy Crawford-esque transformation, and brow lamination seemed like a good first step toward addressing my desire for a fuller brow — without the commitment of something like microblading. 

After scrolling through countless before-and-after images, my brow-curious self arrived at the [BBB London](https://bbb-london.com/) outpost at Saks Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. Wondering if brow lamination could really cut my dependency on brow pencils and give me the arches of my dreams, it was time to see what the hype was about.  

## **What is Brow Lamination?**
Similar to a perm, brow lamination uses a non-invasive chemical processing treatment to set and direct brow hairs into a more desirable shape. The process, which is relatively quick and pain-free, is beneficial for those looking to maximize the impact of their natural brows. The final results are glossy and shapely brows that are expected to last between six to eight weeks with little to no upkeep.

According to Jaimineey Patel, head of training at [Blink Brow Bar](https://bbb-london.com/), brow lamentation is suitable for all hair types, though “customers with unruly or sparse brows will definitely see the biggest difference,” she says. Since my brows are sparse, the treatment feels tailor-made for me.

## **The Brow Lamination Process** 
The brow lamination process begins at least 24 hours before the treatment itself with a pre-appointment allergy test (à la [eyelash extensions](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-get-eyelash-extensions)). Assuming clients don’t have a reaction, the appointment itself lasts an hour (at most) and involves a technician applying chemical solutions to tame the brow hair before molding them into the desired shape.

### **Step 1: The Patch Test**

At least 24 hours before the appointment, a quick (think: less than a minute) allergy test needs to be administered for safety. Since the treatment requires a series of chemical solutions be applied to the skin, the patch test (usually performed behind the ear) helps to ensure the application process will not cause any ill effects. The patch test proved I was not allergic and, therefore, one step closer to coming for Keira Knightley’s brow crown. 

### **Step 2: Apply the Brow Adhesive**

Once at the actual appointment arrived, I laid back into the reclining chair and let the technician examine what miracles she could create. “Firstly, a brow adhesive is used to secure the brow hairs in an upward direction to the desired brow style,” Patel shares. The step takes approximately 15 minutes and includes a subtle poking sensation as each brow hair is separated to lay in its new place. Unlike lash extensions, which requires patients to keep their eyes closed, the brow lamination process allowed me to multitask on my phone while the technician meticulously brushed out each hair. 

### **Step 3: Style the Brow Hair**

After the first brow adhesive was wiped off, my brows had a wind-swept appearance that initially startled me. Upon further review, seeing each hair individually spread actually out got me more excited for the final result. “A styling lotion is used to relax the hair cuticle, so the brow hairs can be molded to the determined brow shape,” Patel explains. Prior to applying the lotion, my technician warned that there might be a slight burning sensation, but it is to be expected.

### **Step 4: Set the Brow Hair**

Just as I was getting comfortable and more relaxed, the process was nearly coming to an end and we were onto step four. “We apply a fixing lotion to structure the brow hairs and set them into the new position,” says Patel 

### **Step 5: Finishing Touches**

Finally, a keratin treatment is applied to hydrate the brow hair. “The keratin serum helps close and smooth down the hair cuticle, which restores, conditions, and nourishes the hairs,” Patel says. Since keratin has long been a go-to for smoothing and straightening locks, this step felt particularly apropos. 

### **Additional Treatments** 
Brow lamination yields some seriously volumizing results that many clients are happy with as is. But, for those of us with fair skin and light hair or for anyone who likes the appearance of a darker brow, a tinting treatment may also be needed for best results. 

“We recommend having a brow shape and tint alongside,” Patel says. “The brow shape will add definition to the brows and structure your face, while a tint will give the illusion of extra thickness and length.” It should be noted that eyebrow tinting also requires a patch test, but it can be done at the same time as the patch test for the lamination chemical solutions.

I opted for the brow tint, which was done in conjunction with the treatment and only added an extra 15 minutes to the already brisk 45-minute lamination process. 

## **The Results**
As someone who loves instantaneous results but has little time to spare, the first gaze at my new brows got my heart racing. I never knew how much I needed feathered, satin-smooth eyebrows — or how quickly I could achieve them. The combined lamination and tinting treatment took about an hour, and I was able to stroll out with ease – save for catching a glimpse in the closest mirror to admire the technician’s magical work and hope someone would confuse me for Brooke Shields.

With each hair laid meticulously in a swept-up style, the results were beyond anything I could’ve created myself with a brow gel and pencil. Perfectly framing my peepers, this upgrade immediately made my eyes pop more, in addition to changing the shape of my face. It simultaneously felt like my eyebrows had doubled in size and that I had a [brow lift](https://aedit.com/aedition/theres-more-to-a-brow-lift-than-meets-the-eye). 

For the first 24 hours post-laminating and tinting, all tampering is off limits. This means:

- No washing
- No brushing
- No touching 

After the first full day, it was time for the moment of truth. For once, my eyebrows didn’t disappear after I washed my face, and they remained pretty well fixed in the new, spread out shape they’d been assigned. But all good things must come to an end. After a few weeks — even with the benefit of the tinting — I slowly felt the need to fill in my brows creep back in, as my penchant for a dark arch returned. Still, the new shape was perfect for my laissez-faire approach to brow maintenance, in which I just let them do what they want to do and fill in the blanks. I suppose I will just have to accept that my brow hair may never be as dark and bushy as Eugene Levy’s – though maybe that’s for the best.

What brow lamination offers is quite simple: A non-invasive way to coax your unruly, coarse, or sparse eyebrows into a more voluminous, feathered shape with lots of shine.
