About Stephen T. Spates, MD
After graduating summa cum laude from the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, Dr. Stephen Spates earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine. He then completed his internship in internal medicine at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center and his dermatology residency at The University of Colorado. Dr. Spates was then awarded a fellowship in Dermatologic (Mohs) Surgery at the University of Colorado. Dr. Spates’ research focuses on metastatic skin cancer and diagnostic techniques. He has published widely and presented his findings at numerous medical conferences. In addition, he has written textbook chapters on melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancer for primary care physicians. Dr. Spates, considered one of the country’s most talented cutaneous surgeons, is on the faculty for the annual cutaneous surgery and anatomy course at the University of California, San Diego. At The Derm Group, his work includes both skin cancer treatment and cosmetic surgery.
