In the world of aesthetic medicine, we talk a lot about ‘rejuvenation,’ but the breadth of non-surgical treatment options available today has made the idea of ‘[prejuvenation](https://aedit.com/aedition/i-was-practicing-prejuvenation-before-it-was-a-trend)’ not only possible but popular. When it comes to taking preventative measures to keep your skin looking youthful, a solid skincare and sun care routine tops the list. From there, [neurotoxins](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-before-getting-botox-for-the-first-time), [fillers](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-to-know-before-getting-lip-filler-for-the-first-time), [facials](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-get-a-hydrafacial-for-clear-glowing-skin), [chemical peels](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-superficial-medium-deep-chemical-peels), and the like can proactively address concerns before they become, well, concerning. 

A treatment option that is growing in popularity? [Laser rejuvenation](https://aedit.com/procedure/laser-skin-resurfacing) or, in the case of patients under 35, laser prejuvenation. To better understand the concept of preventative procedures and how laser therapy fits in, we’ve spoken to a top dermatologist and a prejuventation patient.

## **What Is Prejuvenation?**
Sure, ‘prejuvenation’ might sound like nothing more than a trendy buzzword, but there is actually some substance to the concept. The term refers to the steps taken to prevent or correct early signs of aging. Compare that to ‘rejuvenation’ — which describes treatments that are designed to address visible signs of aging — and you’ll get the gist of why many plastic surgeons and dermatologists are increasingly working with patients in their late twenties and thirties.

So, what is this demographic looking for? “Younger patients tend to be concerned about skin tone, pore size, texture, and fine lines,” says [Jessica Weiser, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/jessica-weiser-md-34640), a board certified dermatologist in New York City and assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Columbia University. Treatment protocols are as unique as the patients themselves, but she encourages everyone “to commit to a [comprehensive skincare routine](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-skincare-routine-products-ingredients-for-20s) with [liberal sun protection](https://aedit.com/aedition/dermatologist-approved-sunscreen-for-face-body).” 

From there, she explores in-office remedies on a case-by-case basis. “I may recommend small amounts of [neuromodulator injections](https://aedit.com/aedition/comparing-neurotoxin-botulinum-type-a-injections-botox-dysport-jeuveau-xeomin) for patients who have static wrinkles,” she says. For the uninitiated, ‘static’ wrinkles are the lines that stay put at rest, while ‘dynamic’ wrinkles are those that only occur with movement. For patients who start to experience [volume loss](https://aedit.com/concern/facial-volume) in their thirties, “small quantities of [dermal filler or biostimulatory injections](https://aedit.com/aedition/hyaluronic-acid-filler-vs-biostimulatory-injectables)” may be helpful, she adds.

And then there are lasers. “There are a variety of lasers that can address redness, pigmentation, and [general skin tone](https://aedit.com/concern/uneven-skin-tone),” she explains. Additionally, she says there are “a variety of other lasers and energy-based devices that are more specific to [overall skin texture](https://aedit.com/concern/uneven-skin-texture), including [acne scars](https://aedit.com/concern/acne-scars), [fine lines](https://aedit.com/concern/fine-lineswrinkles), and more.”

## **Laser Prejuvenation 101**
First, a quick primer on laser therapy. There are a few different types of lasers to keep in mind (learn more in our [complete guide to laser skin resurfacing](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-ablative-laser-skin-resurfacing)):

- **Ablative Lasers**: Also known as ‘wounding’ lasers, these devices remove some or all of the epidermis.
- **Non-Ablative Lasers**: ‘Non-wounding’ lasers preserve the epidermis, while heating the dermis layer.
- **Fractional Lasers**: A pixelated energy beam dissipates some of the heat.
- **Non-Fractional Lasers**: The laser beam remains focused and concentrated.

Different combinations of the above (think: [ablative fractional](https://aedit.com/procedure/ablative-fractional-lasers), [ablative non-fractional](https://aedit.com/procedure/ablative-nonfractional-lasers), [non-ablative fractional](https://aedit.com/procedure/nonablative-fractional-lasers), [non-ablative non-fractional](https://aedit.com/procedure/nonablative-nonfractional-lasers)) make a device better suited for different concerns. Non-ablative [pulsed dye lasers](https://aedit.com/procedure/pulsed-dye-laser), for example, are used to treat vascular lesions (think: broken capillaries and other redness), while a non-ablative fractional laser like [Clear + Brilliant®](https://aedit.com/procedure/clear-brilliant) is commonly called a ‘lunchtime laser’ because less inflammation means less downtime (but also less dramatic results).

It should come as no surprise then that the type of laser Dr. Weiser recommends for a patient depends on what they are looking to address. “For those with red scars, [rosacea](https://aedit.com/concern/rosacea), and broken capillaries, I use vascular-specific lasers to reduce or remove these concerns,” she shares. For mild texture concerns, she notes “there are lower energy and less invasive devices” that can do the trick. When it comes to [acne scars](https://aedit.com/procedure/acne-scar-treatment-laser-resurfacing), Dr. Weiser often reaches for what she describes as “more intense fractional resurfacing devices” — including non-ablative resurfacing with [Fraxel®](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-fraxel-laser-skin-resurfacing-treatments) or [microneedling with radiofrequency](https://aedit.com/procedure/microneedling-with-radiofrequency) or ablative resurfacing with [CO2 laser treatments](https://aedit.com/procedure/ablative-co2-laser).

An additional prejuvenation benefit? [Collagen](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-collagen-in-skincare-supplements-aesthetic-medicine) production. “Some treatments do yield collagen regeneration — those that work on textural irregularities of the skin, primarily — and may provide some anti-aging benefits,” Dr. Weiser shares. As she explains, devices that target redness and pigmentation tend to provide less collagen production. But, with that said, “all heat can help stimulate healing,” she notes. Stimulating healing, stimulates collagen.

None of this matters, however, if you aren’t taking care of your complexion at home. “What usually proves to be most beneficial is early implementation of skin health awareness and sun protection,” Dr. Weiser emphasizes.

### **What to Expect From Laser Treatments**
Because there are so many different types and intensities of lasers, there is no one single treatment or recovery protocol. Generally speaking, “most energy-based devices require a series of treatments,” Dr. Weiser notes. You can usually expect at least three sessions to see results, she says, though more may be needed. “For more severe textural issues, additional treatments may be required to reach an ideal endpoint,” she adds.

While more invasive ablative lasers may call for general anesthesia (and a couple weeks of downtime), a [topical anesthetic](https://aedit.com/aedition/numbing-cream-breakouts) suffices for many laser treatments. You may feel a bit of discomfort during the treatment, and, depending on the device, swelling, [bruising](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-prevent-bruising-after-lasers-filler-botox), and redness are common side effects. Your provider will share any additional post-op instructions prior to the procedure, but you may be encouraged to switch to a [gentle skincare routine](https://aedit.com/aedition/post-procedure-skincare-makeup-product-guide) for a period of time and be extra vigilant with your sun protection. 

It is also important to note that many lasers are not suitable for all skin tones. When performed incorrectly on melanated skin, it can lead to burns, scars, and [unwanted pigmentation](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-hyperpigmentation-dark-spots-melasma). I made sure to reapply sunscreen every few hours when I was out for a couple of weeks after each session, and I still keep up with sunscreen to keep my results looking as good as possible for as long as I can.

## **The Takeaway**
While laser therapy can be a great way to address skin tone and texture concerns at any age, it is not a silver bullet. A facet of the procedure that’s crucial to keep in mind: [downtime and recovery](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-long-does-it-takes-to-recover-from-cosmetic-surgery-procedures). Generally speaking, surgical procedures have a longer and more involved healing process than non-surgical alternatives, but what does that actually mean in terms of what you can expect in the days, weeks, and months after treatment?

## **Tummy Tuck Recovery Timeline**
During the [consultation](https://aedit.com/aedition/questions-to-ask-your-doctor-during-plastic-surgery-consultation) and pre-op preparations, your surgeon will share what can be expected during the recovery process and when you can return to normal activities after surgery. There may be particular milestones that are important to you, such as going back to work, exercising, or picking up young children. The amount of downtime depends on the patient and procedure, but here is a general timeline for recovering from an abdominoplasty.

### **Day 0**
From the time you check-in to the time you are discharged, a tummy tuck is a full-day affair. As [Jeff Church, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/jeffrey-church-md-34661), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Wilmington, NC, explains, the vast majority of abdominoplasties are performed at outpatient facilities. “Most surgery centers have the patient come one to two hours before surgery,” he says. “The surgery takes about three hours, and patients typically stay another hour or so for recovery.”

Whether you go home the same day or stay overnight for observation is up to your surgeon, but “most tummy tucks are performed as an outpatient surgery, meaning you are able to return home on the same day,” says [Olivia MaDan, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/olivia-madan-md-34660), a board eligible plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Nashville, TN. Because [general anesthesia](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-anesthesia) is involved, you will need someone to drive you home and, if possible, stay with you for the first few days to help change dressings, administer pain medication (prescription and over-the-counter), care for children, and tend to any chores.

### **The First 48 Hours** 
For the first 48 hours after a tummy tuck, you will feel drowsy (a lingering side effect of the anesthesia) and sore. “Patients can expect to have incisional, inflammatory, and muscle spasm pain,” Dr. MaDan says. Discomfort “is controlled with [pain medication](https://aedit.com/aedition/opioid-crisis-plastic-surgery-recovery-pain-management), as well as an injectable anesthetic called Exparel® that we administer during the procedure,” explains [Jules Walters III, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/jules-walters-md-34662), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Metairie, LA. Expect it “to improve each day,” he shares.

You may be tempted to turn into a couch potato and use the downtime as an excuse to catch up on *Squid Game*, but gentle movement is perhaps the most important medicine during this time. “I ask that my patients get up and move around starting when they get home on the day of surgery,” Dr. Church says. A simple walk around the house every couple of hours will do the trick, Dr. Walters adds.

Depending on the technique of your surgeon, you may or may not go home with drains. “I usually avoid leaving a drainage tube by placing many internal stitches,” Dr. MaDan notes. “The drainage tube often causes significant discomfort after a tummy tuck.” But all patients will be encouraged to wear [compression garments](https://aedit.com/aedition/benefits-of-compression-garments-after-cosmetic-surgery) for several weeks. “I counsel my patient's to wear their compression garments 24/7 (except for showering) for six weeks after surgery,” she says.

At Dr. Walters practice, compression and massage are both employed to manage [post-op swelling](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-minimize-swelling-after-cosmetic-surgery). “Our patients wear a series of compression garments and foam for a total of about three months post-op,” he explains. “Our patients undergo postoperative [lymphatic drainage massages](https://aedit.com/aedition/benefits-of-lymphatic-drainage-massages-after-cosmetic-surgery) and size down on their garments as swelling subsides.”

### **Week 1**
While you undoubtedly heard from your surgeon and their team in the hours and days after the procedure, your first in-person check up usually comes about a week after surgery. They will check your incisions, remove dressings and drains (if they’re still in place), and answer any questions you may have about the healing process or resuming activities. 

Speaking of activities, they are still pretty restricted the first week — though short walks remain important. You should also be wearing compression garments as per your surgeon’s instructions. Swelling and discomfort are common. “I tell my patients that for the first week they will wonder why they did it, the second week they will think they will be ok, and by the third week they will know they will be ok,” Dr Church says. “Most patients are doing fairly well with their normal activities by four to six weeks.”

### **Weeks 2 & 3**
At either the two- or three-week mark, you will visit your surgeon again for a follow-up appointment, but, in the meantime, you may be able to resume certain non-strenuous activities. “I usually recommend about two weeks off of work and most basic activities,” Dr. Walters says. “At that point, patients are usually no longer taking pain medication and are able to begin driving and getting back to most normal day-to-day tasks.”

When it comes to driving, he suggests starting slow. “I always recommend first sitting in the driveway and pressing down on the brake and making sure you are able to move with a full range of motion to drive safely,” he shares. 

Dr. Church asks patients to exercise similar caution behind the wheel — and in general. “I allow my patients to drive when they feel safe to drive and they are not taking pain medications,” he says. “I ask my patients not to do activities that could elevate their blood pressure or heart rate for the first two weeks.” After those first 14 days, it’s all about mindfulness. “I tell them to listen to their bodies after the first two weeks and if something hurts then to back off,” he adds. No matter how much better you think you are feeling, now is not the time to overdo it.

### **1 Month & Beyond**
Once you reach the one-most post-op mark, you will likely be starting to feel like yourself again. Swelling lingers but you should be through the worst of it. You will return to your surgeon’s office for another check-up, and you may be cleared to resume additional activities. “For lifting heavy objects and [exercising](https://aedit.com/aedition/when-to-start-exercising-again-after-cosmetic-surgery-procedures), I recommend easing back into this about four weeks after surgery,” Dr. Walters says. 

It should be noted that while most patients are “free from restrictions at four to six weeks post-op, the body continues to improve and recover up to six months or even one year after surgery,” Dr. Walters notes. Even so, you can generally expect to have a sense of your results three to four months after a tummy tuck. Keep in mind, however, that “minor swelling can be present for three-plus months after surgery,” Dr. MaDan says. 

As it relates to scars, it takes a full year for the incision sites to fully heal. Your surgeon will likely recommend a [skincare and sun care](https://aedit.com/aedition/scar-minimizing-skincare-to-use-after-surgery) protocol to [minimize scarring](https://aedit.com/aedition/minimizing-scars-after-surgery) and additional in-office treatments (think: lasers and microneedling) may be available to refine the appearance of post-op marks.

A couple of times, I contacted her with questions that felt too trivial to bother a doctor with but that I didn’t want to rely on Google for.

I hadn’t expected to feel as tired as I did, but the pain was less all-consuming than I thought it may have been. If you live alone or with someone out at work full time, I would recommend asking a friend or hiring a nurse to stay with you for the first few days or even the first week. While I could walk around, I felt exhausted and needed help making sure I kept to my medication schedule and ate well.

    I would but with a caveat — know that recovery is involved, and, if you have a physical job or young kids, you will need help for around four weeks after surgery. If you plan for the procedure and can give yourself enough time to recover gently, then I think it’s one of the most life-altering surgeries out there. It’s undoubtedly transformed how I see myself and has increased my quality of life, which I never thought could be possible from cosmetic surgery.

## **Preparing for a Smooth Recovery from a Tummy Tuck**
A smooth recovery from any surgery starts in the lead up to the procedure. “An ideal peri-operative plan is to complete the necessary tasks — especially any requiring heavy lifting or exertion — before surgery,” Dr. MaDan says. That includes considering what you are going to eat in the days after your procedure. “It is a great idea to have some [healthy, high-protein meals](https://aedit.com/aedition/meal-plans-diet-before-after-cosmetic-surgery) planned for the first few days post-op,” Dr. Walters notes.

Another essential? Arranging a driver to and from surgery. Since your mobility will be very limited for at least the first week after a tummy tuck, a helping hand can go a long way. “Help at home is beneficial to assist with child or pet care, perform any necessary tasks, and assist with mobility, like walking up stairs or getting in and out of the shower,” Dr. MaDan explains. 

The less you have to think about, the better. As Dr. Walters says, “it is always best to be prepared so you don’t have to worry about these things while recovering.”

But, with so much misinformation online, it can be hard to know who to trust or what to look for. 

To better understand how to successfully use social media during the research phase of finding a provider, we spoke to physicians and patients alike. Below, AEDIT providers share how they showcase their work in the digital age, as a patient shares her experience finding a surgeon for her rhinoplasty surgery online.

## **What Providers Use Social Media For**
Individual social media feeds and strategies are as unique as fingerprints at this point, and the content aesthetic providers post is no exception. Ultimately, the look and feel of their account(s) depends on their specialty and who they are trying to reach. Some dermatologists and plastic surgeons exclusively post before and after images of their most popular procedures. Others share footage from the treatment room. All the while, there are those who take a more personal approach by keeping medical content to a minimum in favor of focusing on themselves and their families or even creating a lifestyle of sorts. And then there are the providers who do a little bit of everything.

[Melissa Doft, MD](https://doftplasticsurgery.com/), a double board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in New York City falls into the latter category. Her Instagram feed ([@doftnewyork](https://www.instagram.com/doftnewyork/)) features a beautifully curated collection of editorial imagery among pics from her travels, media clippings, patient testimonials, and, yes, the occasional B&A. “I like to share some photos of my family and vacations sometimes,” she says. “It helps to keep things human.” Even so, the primary goal of her feed is to give her patients (current and future) something aesthetically pleasing — and maybe even a bit aspirational — to look at. 

## **Instagram vs. TikTok**
If you are researching potential providers and wondering what social media platform you should be on, the answer is not as cut and dry as it used to be. While Instagram had long been the undisputed go-to, frequent tweaks to its content guidelines and algorithm have made it difficult for providers to showcase certain parts of their practice (think: potentially graphic procedure footage). As a result, TikTok now plays host to a growing number of doctor accounts. “We post more videos to Stories and Reels on [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/jasonemermd/), and [TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/@jasonemermd?lang=en) is popular, too,” says [Jason Emer, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/jason-emer-md-722), a board certified dermatologist in West Hollywood, who can be found at @jasonemermd on both platforms.

While Dr. Emer still uses static before and after photos for some posts on Instagram, his use of video gives patients who want to know what's going to happen during treatment the opportunity to learn about the procedure(s) they’re considering prior to coming in for a consultation. [Jason Roostaeian, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/jason-roostaeian-md-449), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Los Angeles, has begun to adopt a similarly video-driven approach. The most significant difference when it comes to determining whether Instagram is still the standard-bearer in the search for a cosmetic dermatologist or surgeon comes down to whether it's the place you spend the most time scrolling. At the moment, [gen Z and younger millennials](https://aedit.com/aedition/aedit-survey-reveals-how-2020-altered-aesthetic-landscape) are generally more active on TikTok than Instagram, while IG still reigns supreme for older millennials and gen X.

## **How to Find a Provider on Social Media** 
Cautionary tales were echoed by Dr. Doft, Dr. Emer, and Dr. Jason: Not everything you see online is to be believed, nor does a massive following on social media mean a provider is the right person to perform your procedure. “Before and after photos are valuable, but photos taken shortly after surgery don't take things like [swelling](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-minimize-swelling-after-cosmetic-surgery) and [long-term healing](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-long-does-it-takes-to-recover-from-cosmetic-surgery-procedures) into account,” Dr. Jason warns. 

While there is no universal governing body dictating how before and after photos must be presented, best practices indicate that, depending on the procedure, they sometimes need to be taken weeks, months, or even years apart. As such, be wary of the provider who is showing ‘after’ photos of surgeries like rhinoplasty from the operating room, doesn’t use consistent lighting, or isn't showing multiple angles of a result. When it comes to our bodies, you’ll be hard pressed to find anyone who is perfectly symmetrical. These asymmetries can be due to genetics, skeletal conditions, or overuse of muscles on one side compared to the other, and, for some patients, the degree of difference is significant enough for them to seek out a way to even things out. Read on to better understand how cosmetic procedures can address asymmetries from both provider and patient perspectives.

## **What Causes Body Asymmetries**
Body asymmetries are the rule, not the exception. “I have yet to meet a patient who is completely symmetric — asymmetry is a fact of life,” says [Gregory Buford, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/gregory-buford-md-1015), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Lone Tree, CO. “Complete symmetry actually is often less attractive than a little asymmetry, but, like anything in life, it's all about balance. A little difference can look nice while severe asymmetry does not.” 

While asymmetry can exist anywhere on the body, it is more common in some areas than others. “The majority of women have some degree of breast asymmetry,” says [Umbareen Mahmood, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/umbareen-mahmood-md-23), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in New York City. “Many people also have asymmetry in their hips and shoulders, buttocks, legs, and hands.” 

People with anatomical or structural asymmetries may experience differences in the appearance of one side of their body compared to the other because of genetics or conditions such as scoliosis. Functional asymmetries can occur for a variety of reasons, though they generally involve muscle imbalances either from overuse or because of the body having to over-compensate (think: due to an injury). 

## **How to Treat Body Asymmetries**
Understanding balance, [proportion](https://aedit.com/aedition/plastic-surgery-results-are-about-proportion-not-perfection), and, yes, symmetry is key to any cosmetic surgery or procedure. “One of the most important components of evaluating any patient is recognizing asymmetries and trying to minimize them,” Dr. Mahmood says. As she explains, “asymmetry itself is not bad — it is inherent in every human being and is natural.” With that said, “it is important to recognize the variability, so that treatments can try to decrease them versus exacerbate them,” she notes.

One of the most obvious examples? The aforementioned breasts. “If a patient with breast or nipple asymmetry gets a breast augmentation with the same size implant, the asymmetry will be highlighted,” Dr. Mahmood cautions. With that in mind, it’s important to visit a board certified provider who will be able to evaluate the entire body and how these asymmetries relate to one another. To give you a better sense of what that entails, we’ve broken down a few of the most common treatment areas below:

### **For Breasts**
“I would say that the area where I see the most asymmetry is in the [breasts](https://aedit.com/concern/breast-shape-and-size),” Dr. Buford shares. “This difference can range from mild to severe and the patient may not even be aware of the difference until it is pointed out.” The goal, however, is not necessarily to create [a ‘perfect’ result](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-plastic-surgeons-balance-patients-cosmetic-surgery-desires-and-safety). “The art of plastic surgery and the opportunity is to try and even out this difference, although I emphasize to each patient that we will never achieve mirror image results,” he notes.

“I always tell patients, ‘breasts are sisters, not twins,’” Dr. Mahmood quips. Even so, your sisters may be a little too different for your taste, in which case there are an array of surgical procedures — from [breast augmentation](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-solutions) and [breast reduction](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-reduction-and-revision-solutions) to [breast lifts](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-lift-solutions) — that can be performed. In fact, the treatment protocol is anything but one-size-fits-all. “For the breast, it depends on what the asymmetry is,” she says. 

If your breasts are both “overly large or ptotic” (read: sagging), then “the treatment is a [breast reduction](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-reduction) and/or [mastopexy](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-lift)” (i.e. breast lift) “with more tissue removed from the larger side,” Dr. Mahmood explains. For patients who have volume asymmetries and prefer the size of the larger breast, “the treatment can be a [breast augmentation with implants](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-with-implants), [fat transfer](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-with-fat-transfer), or [combination of both](https://aedit.com/aedition/hybrid-breast-augmentation-with-implants-fat-transfer),” she shares. From there, the surgery and [recovery process](https://aedit.com/aedition/breast-augmentation-recovery-healing-process) is similar to that of any breast procedure. 

Additionally, it’s important to consider the chest as a whole. “In this area, it's not only about asymmetry of the breasts but also about asymmetry of the chest wall itself,” Dr. Buford explains. “It is not uncommon for a patient to have either pectus excavatum (concave chest wall) or pectus carinatum (convex chest wall) or both. Add scoliosis to this and the difference in the projection of the breasts becomes even more pronounced.” 

All of this should be taken into account when devising a treatment plan. “For the breasts, the sky's the limit,” Dr. Buford says. “I often use [different sized implants](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-get-the-most-natural-looking-breast-implants) to even out volume differences and can go as far as fat grafting to one or both sides to also aid in achieving greater symmetry.”  

### **For the Waist, Hips, & Buttocks**
Addressing waist and hip asymmetries is generally similar, in theory, to the breasts: reduce one side and/or make the other side larger. “Asymmetry in the hips and shoulders is often reflected in an uneven distribution of subcutaneous fat, with one flank having more fullness or one side of the posterior bra roll area being more pronounced,” Dr. Mahmood explains. In such cases, “[liposuction](https://aedit.com/procedure/liposuction) of the subcutaneous fat in the area that has more fullness can help minimize the skeletal asymmetries,” she notes.

If your backside is a cause of concern, volume can be restored via fat grafting or implants. “Asymmetry in the buttock can be addressed with gluteal augmentation with fat transfer and/or gluteal implant,” Dr. Mahmood says. [Fat grafting](https://aedit.com/aedition/why-everyone-is-talking-about-fat-grafting) procedures involve removing fat from a donor site (think: the low abs or flanks), purifying the tissue, and injecting it into the area you wish to enhance.     My first piece of advice is to talk things through with a therapist. I think people like me who have a complicated relationship with their bodies should be certain they are choosing to have surgery for the best reasons — and not simply because they think it will make them happier. Sure, my procedures made me less self-conscious, but surgery alone didn’t change my relationship with my body. Secondly, I would advise seeking out a surgeon or medical team who is experienced working with cases such as yours. The surgeon I went to was referred to me by a friend who also has scoliosis and had a procedure to reduce the appearance of a rib hump. I think there’s a certain level of artistry involved in cosmetic procedures, so finding someone who knew how to work with a non-traditional body shape was helpful in my case.

So-called ‘hip dips’ — indentations found along the side body below the hips and above the thighs — are natural and harmless, but we all seem to be obsessed with them. [Google trend data](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=today%201-m&geo=GB&q=hip%20dips) shows that searches for the term (and it’s sister expression, ‘violin hips’) have soared this year. So, what’s driving the interest? We’re breaking down everything you need to know about hip dips and hear from two patients who chose different procedures to correct them.

## **What Causes Hip Dips**
Hip dips or violin hips refer to the inward curves that sit just below the hip bone. Instead of the outer curvature of the hip being rounded, it’s indented. Hip dips are generally caused by the skin being tethered to a deep part of the thigh bone, and how visible they are depends on the width of the hips and the shape of the pelvis. For some, this indentation is barely noticeable. For others, it’s more prominent. 

Despite living healthy and active lifestyles, people often find these dips won’t budge due to the anatomy of the indentations themselves. No matter how many times you do exercises that purport to target hip dips (think: squats, lunges, and deadlifts to increase muscle mass around the thighs and buttocks), those who are genetically predisposed to having them are unlikely to see much of a change because the lack of volume cannot be addressed. 

## **Hip Dip Treatment Options**
We said it before, but it bears repeating: Hip dips are natural, and there is no medical need to treat them. But, if they bother you, that doesn’t make them any less frustrating. Diet and exercise are unable to provide a whole lot of assistance, but there are some cosmetic procedures that can address the contour of the hips. With both non-surgical and surgical solutions available, we’re rounding up the most common hip dip treatment options.

### **1. Fillers for Hip Dips**
- **Average Cost:** $800 to $1,000 per vial
- **Downtime:** No exercise for 24 hours
- **Anesthesia:** Local

The same fillers that you turn to for facial rejuvenation and contour can also be used to sculpt and volumize certain areas of the body, too. In the case of hips dips, providers can employ the filler to, well, fill out the indentations for a smoother, more streamlined silhouette (note: there are currently no fillers approved by United States Food and Drug Administration for hip augmentation, though some are used ‘off-label’ to improve hip contour). [Sculptra®](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-dermal-fillers), a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) injectable, is often the go-to for addressing hip dips because it is considered a collagen stimulator (meaning it helps the skin rebuild collagen and, thus, improve volume loss). 

Both on the face and body, a series of treatments (spaced about four to six weeks apart) are needed. For hip dip correction, six to 10 vials of Sculptra® may be needed per session, which, if you are doing the math, can quickly become costly. It should also be noted that results are not immediate — they gradually reveal themselves over the course of four to six months. The benefit of Sculptra®, however, is that those results can last two years or more. 

There is no downtime associated with Sculptra® injections, though your provider will likely tell you to refrain from exercising for the first 24 hours. Beyond that, [bruising](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-prevent-bruising-after-lasers-filler-botox) and injection site pain are the most common side effects and generally resolve in a few days. 

### **2. Fat Transfer for Hip Dips**

If you are looking for a more natural alternative to filler and have areas of unwanted fat, [fat transfer](https://aedit.com/aedition/comparing-dermal-fillers-vs-fat-grafting-for-facial-rejuvenation-contouring) may provide an ideal solution for treating hip dips. Like a [Brazilian butt lift (BBL)](https://aedit.com/aedition/brazilian-butt-lift-procedure-safety), the procedure involves removing fat via liposuction from one area of the body (think: the low abdomen) and injecting it into another (in this case, the hips). The grafted fat needs time to become acclimated to its new location, and, during the first year, patients can expect to lose 30 to 50 percent of the tissue. While the benefit of fat grafting (when compared to synthetic filler) is that there is no risk of the body rejecting it, a patient must have enough excess fat in order to be a candidate. Since hip dips are often most prominent on those with minimal body fat, the procedure isn’t always a viable solution.

### **3. Hip Implants for Hip Dips**
- **Average Cost:** $8,000 - $10,000
- **Downtime:** 1-2 weeks off from work; resume normal activities 6-8 weeks post-op
- **Anesthesia:** General

The most invasive and permanent procedure to correct hip dips is hip implants. The implants are usually custom-molded for the patient and made of silicone. Unlike silicone breast implants, hip implants (like [butt implants](https://aedit.com/procedure/butt-augmentation-with-implants)) are not filled with a liquid or gel solution. Instead, they are more solid, do not leak or rupture, and are designed to look and feel like natural muscle tissue. During the surgery, which is performed under [general anesthesia](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-anesthesia), your surgeon will insert the implants through small incisions along the underwear line. Patients typically return home the same day. 

Compared to the other hip dip solutions, implant recovery is the most involved. While you can likely return to work within one to two weeks, it will be six to eight weeks before all normal activities resume. Like buttock implants, you’ll need to avoid putting prolonged pressure on the treatment area and your mobility will be severely limited for the first seven to 14 days. Swelling and tenderness are the most common side effects. While results are immediate, you will fully heal over the course of three to six months.

Sarah opted for hip implants after first testing fillers, while Joanne turned her abdominal liposuction into a fat transfer procedure to address her hips. Below, they share their stories.

An athlete since high school, Sarah* had always been frustrated by the appearance of her hip dips. Spending hours in the gym every week wasn’t helping, so she decided to seek treatment to help improve her self-confidence.

My biggest advice would be to get a complete list of things you can’t do after surgery when you first consult your surgeon. Being a beauty and wellness writer, I’ve been invited to try [CoolSculpting®](https://aedit.com/aedition/malin-akerman-coolsculpting-elite) at dermatology and plastic surgery offices on multiple occasions. I was always skeptical to try body contouring devices, however, because I felt I could achieve the results myself. ## **The Benefits of CoolSculpting®**
Finally succumbing to the allure of CoolSculpting® was a big move for me because I have always had too much pride. But, after having a baby almost three years ago, my abs never looked the same, and it’s made me very self-conscious.

## **Ideal Candidates for CoolSculpting®**
Generally speaking, CoolSculpting® (like so many [non-surgical body contouring procedures](https://aedit.com/procedure/body-contouring-solutions)) is best for people with relatively healthy lifestyles but are looking to get rid of stubborn fat that seems to be immune to diet and exercise. 

To determine if I was a candidate, I first went in for a consultation with lead aesthetician, [Christina Lombardi](https://sccsnj.com/about/). “If there’s an inch to pinch, you’re a good candidate for CoolSculpting®,” she said. Sure enough, I had just about an inch on my lower abs.

It should be noted that, when treating the stomach, it’s typically recommended to treat both the upper *and* lower abs, so they look uniform. I wasn’t a candidate for the upper abs, but I proceeded with scheduling an appointment for my low abdomen.

## **CoolSculpting® Treatment**
Once my treatment day rolled around, Christina measured out the target area (*as seen in the photo above*) and placed a gel pad made of glycerin and honey over it to protect my skin from the cold. As soon as she put the device on the first side of my lower abs, it sucked in my fat like a vacuum stuck to a rug.  She warned me that I may feel burning, pinching, pulling, or tugging.  I felt some pulling, but, overall, it was a comfortable experience.

Each side of my abdomen took 35 minutes. I sat in a comfortable oversized chair under a blanket working on my laptop as I froze away stubborn areas of fat – permanently. It was the most peaceful and productive hour and a half I had all that week. 

After the time was up, Christina did a gentle [manual massage](https://aedit.com/aedition/benefits-of-lymphatic-drainage-massages-after-cosmetic-surgery) on the area to help break up the fat cells, which my body would absorb and excrete through sweat and urination. The treatment area looked like a hard stick of butter and was completely numb.  

## **CoolSculpting® Recovery & Results**
For the next two weeks, my low abs were swollen. Sensorially, some areas felt numb, while others were tender. I opted for athleisure-wear instead of jeans to be as comfortable as possible. I was instructed to drink lots of water to help the process of elimination and am expecting to see full results three months after treatment. To date, I’m a little over one month out.

The number of CoolSculpting® treatments needed to achieve desired results in a given area varies from person to person, but the average is two. As I mentioned, the fat reduction is permanent, but continuing to lead a healthy lifestyle is the key to maximizing results. I like to look at CoolSculpting® as the icing on the cake. When it comes to vaginal rejuvenation, we’ve talked about [vaginoplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/vaginoplasty) to tighten the vaginal canal, [labiaplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/labiaplasty) to address the labia majora and/or minora, and even [O-Shot](https://aedit.com/procedure/oshot) to increase pleasure. But what about the mons pubis? While both males and females have a mons pubis, it is more prominent in females — and a variety of factors can impact its fullness. 

Sometimes referred to as ‘FUPA’ (a.k.a. Fat Upper Pubic Area), excess skin and fat can occur as a result of weight fluctuations, pregnancy, hormonal changes, or genetics, leading to aesthetic and functional concerns. For those looking to refine the appearance of the mons pubis, monsplasty may be the solution. Here’s what you need to know.

## **What Is Monsplasty?**
Also known as a mons pubis reduction or pubic lift, [monsplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/monsplasty) can remove excess skin and/or fat for a firmer and more contoured mons pubis (i.e. the area of fatty tissue located directly in front of the pubic bone). “Mons pubis reduction is more common than you may think,” says [David Shafer, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/david-shafer-md-153), a double board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in New York City. “There are even acronyms such as FUPA — Fat Upper Pubic Area — to describe the condition.” 

As he explains, such patients report “an unsightly or uncomfortable fullness in the pubic area, which is disproportionate to the rest of their body.” That fullness can show through clothes, make wearing tight garments difficult, and, in some cases, interfere with sexual intercourse or urination. “Good candidates for mons pubis reduction are those that are otherwise healthy and in shape but have concerns about their pubic area fullness,” Dr. Shafer notes.

### **Benefits of Monsplasty** 
Monsplasty can involve liposuction (to remove fat), surgical excision (to remove skin), or a combination of the two. “The planned procedure depends on the patient's anatomy and expectations from surgery,” Dr. Shafer shares. For patients who are concerned about “localized fullness,” he says liposuction is often enough. If skin laxity is a concern, surgical excision may be necessary.

Because the mons pubis sits just below the lower abdomen, patients may wish to address both areas at once. “If the patient's lower abdomen is also protuberan or if there is a step off or bulge between the lower abdomen and pubis, then a [mini-abdominoplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/mini-tummy-tuck) may be the best option to give the smoothest result,” Dr. Shafer explains. 

While [tummy tucks](https://aedit.com/procedure/abdominoplasty) and [liposuction](https://aedit.com/procedure/tumescent-liposuction) (back and/or abdominal) are often combined with monsplasty to improve the final result, they are not the only [pairings](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-aesthetic-procedures-to-combine-to-maximize-appointments). At his practice, “patients also take the opportunity to get other procedures done while in the operating room – such as [breast augmentation](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-solutions) or [breast reduction](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-reduction-and-revision-solutions),” Dr. Shafer adds.

### **Monsplasty Procedure**
Depending on the technique employed, a monsplasty surgery can last one to two hours. In the case of a lipo-only procedure, tiny incisions are made and the fat is removed via a liposuction cannula. The outpatient procedure takes about an hour. If a surgical excision is required or if a tummy tuck is being performed in tandem, the procedure may be closer to two hours. ### **Monsplasty Recovery & Results**
While the [type of anesthesia](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-anesthesia) you receive will depend on your surgeon and preferences, you should plan to have someone help you get home after surgery. The recovery process will largely depend on the type of monsplasty procedure performed. “If treated with liposuction, the patient can expect a few days of downtime but a quick return to normal activities and work,” Dr. Shafer says. 

Excision and tummy tuck patients will need to take it easy a bit longer and should anticipate about a week of downtime before heading back to school or work. From there, it’ll be at least a month before a full resumption of normal activities. “Returning to [exercise](https://aedit.com/aedition/when-to-start-exercising-again-after-cosmetic-surgery-procedures) and other strenuous activities can take four to six weeks to allow time for healing,” he explains.

As with any surgery, [swelling](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-minimize-swelling-after-cosmetic-surgery) is one of the most common post-op side effects, and it may cause the pubic area to look even fuller than it did before. But, not to worry, the swelling will significantly subside in the first few weeks and then continue to resolve over three to six months. Incision site [scarring](https://aedit.com/aedition/minimizing-scars-after-surgery) should fade over the course of a year. The results of monsplasty are considered permanent (assuming there are no large fluctuations in weight), though the skin will continue to age naturally.

Because these points are spread out over the entire body, facial acupuncture is both a cosmetic and a whole-body treatment. As Dr. Irons shares, practitioners use traditional Chinese points and theory when deciding where to insert the needles on the face. 

## **The Benefits of Facial Acupuncture**
Our bodies begin losing collagen at the tender age of 25. “Our body makes it less efficiently, and the collagen and elastin in the face starts to decrease over time,” Dr. Irons explains. Like the theory behind [microneedling](https://aedit.com/procedure/microneedling) (a.k.a. collagen induction theory), “it is thought that inserting needles into the skin will stimulate collagen production because your body has to make more to heal the small ‘wounds’ created on the upper layers of the skin,” she says. After that window, “you can needle the whole face again,” she says.

Generally speaking, she recommends one facial acupuncture session a week for eight to 10 weeks for best results.

I’ve had acupuncture for pain, too, since I started going for rejuvenation. It is an amazing tool that I hope people learn to use more readily.

Even so, Dr. Irons finds that even the most nervous patients tend to warm up in time. “I find that after the initial consultation, my patients are a lot less nervous because they realize it doesn't hurt,” she says. “These aren't like regular needles, they are actually quite delicate — more like little hairs or toothbrush bristles.”
