When I got my first set of acrylic nails at the tender of age of 16 (I’m from Jersey, so that should explain it), I had no idea the day would turn into years of salon visits, hours of research for new designs, and, of course, the endless times I entertained myself by rapping my nails on the sides of desks and tables to hear that reassuring tap-tapping sound. 

The start of [COVID-19](https://aedit.com/aedition/moderna-covid-19-vaccine-dermal-filler-swelling) stay-at-home orders came right after I had gotten my nails done, so I was able to hang on for about a month or so until I had to soak my hands in acetone and ponder my next step. Sure, nails are nowhere near as important as your physical or mental health, but my nails are an important part of me, and I knew heading into a [nail salon](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-visit-a-nail-salon-during-covid-19) wouldn’t be in the cards for a while. 

Enter press-on nails. While my previous experiences with them had sent me running back to acrylics, I was short on options and decided it was worth a shot. Going in, I believed that press-ons were boring, ill-fitting, and wouldn’t stay on, yet I found myself pleasantly surprised to learn that press-on nails have come a long way. - **Care for Your Cuticles**: Push your cuticles back to ensure maximum surface area.

My personal preference is to skip the tabs and go for the glue — even if you only plan on wearing your nails for a short period of time — as glue offers more security. With that in mind, here’s how to apply your nails:

1. Apply a light drop of glue to both the center of your nail bed and the press-on nail
2. Line up the press-on nail, starting at the base of your natural nail and then press down
3. Hold pressure for about 15 to 20 seconds to ensure it’s secure
4. Alternate hands when applying your nails for better control (i.e. don’t apply one hand and then the other)

When it comes to glue, Moore notes that people tend to use too much. While you may think you’re extending the life of the manicure, she recommends a “less is more” approach (as outlined above) for best results. 

## **How to Remove Press-On Nails**
Depending on the type of nails and your lifestyle, press-on nails can last upwards of two to three weeks. You’ll know it’s time to remove them when they start to lift slightly. It’s important to remove them once you feel them lifting, as strands of hair, water, and other debris can enter and further soften the glue. We’re breaking down how to remove press-ons safely:

- **Soak Them Off**: Soak your nails in a bowl of warm water for five to 10 minutes (note: it can take longer if the glue underneath your nail is still hard).

- **Side to Side**: As you soak, gently move the press-on nail from side to side (without force) to avoid damage.

There are certainly situations, however, in which hand sanitizer is the only option. “If you don't have quick access to soap and water, be sure to use hand sanitizer after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing, before eating food, after using the bathroom, and before touching your face at all,” advises [Dendy Engelman, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/dendy-engelman-md-312), a New York City-based board certified dermatologist. 

With this background in mind, read on for hand sanitizer tips from two dermatologists:

### **Tip 1: Moderation Is Key** 
Hand sanitizer is in most of our purses, backpacks, and cars... *for good reason*. As we live our ‘new normal,’ we often find ourselves in situations with dirty hands and without access to soap and running water. Fortunately, we have hand sanitizer to kill germs and move on with our day with peace of mind. In most instances, using an antimicrobial hand sanitizer is totally okay and recommended. Occasional use of hand sanitizers is harmless, but obsessive or frequent use can damage the skin. 

One of the sensitizing culprits is alcohol, which can cause dryness and skin irritation. “The types of alcohol found in hand sanitizers — ethyl alcohol (ethanol) or isopropyl alcohol — can be harsh and irritating for the skin,” Dr. Engelman explains. “But that's unfortunately the trade off for killing germs!”

The three main active ingredients in hand sanitizers (ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, and benzalkonium chloride) are under [safety review](https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-issues-final-rule-safety-and-effectiveness-consumer-hand-sanitizers) by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) but are generally recognized as safe and effective. The FDA [banned the ingredient triclosan](https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/5-things-know-about-triclosan) from hand sanitizers in 2017 due to potential health risks (some as serious as skin cancer and antibiotic resistance).

While there are some side effects of using hand sanitizer, there is one myth our dermatologists are here to bust. Despite what is commonly believed, sanitizer does not make skin more sensitive to UV light and susceptible to sun damage. “Some think it’s because the alcohol in hand sanitizers dry out and thin the skin, but this doesn't actually make your skin more sensitive to UV,” Dr. Spizuoco says. Even so, sun protection should already be a part of your [hand care routine](https://aedit.com/aedition/aesthetic-treatments-for-aging-hands). “It is always a good idea to use a moisturizer with sunscreen every day on hands that are exposed to the sun,” she adds.

### **Tip 2: Use a Dermatologist-Approved Hand Sanitizer**
Not all hand sanitizer is created equal. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) [recommends](https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/hand-sanitizer.html) alcohol contents of at least 60 percent ethyl alcohol (ethanol) or 70 percent isopropyl alcohol for hand sanitizers. But that’s not to say the formula can’t also include some skin-soothing extras. 

To combat the harsh alcohols, Dr. Engelman recommends choosing a formula that also contains nourishing ingredients. “There are gentler hand sanitizers that are formulated with hydrating ingredients, like aloe vera, so they are less harsh on your skin — especially as we're all using them more these days,” she says. Below are two of her go-to hand sanitizer brands:

They contain 67 percent ethyl alcohol, plus aloe vera and essential oils, to keep skin sanitized and moisturized without a sticky film. 

While some hand sanitizers might be better at combatting dry skin, all sanitizers have the same goal: Kill harmful bacteria. Dr. Engelman says it’s important to check the alcohol concentration on your bottle to ensure it meets the CDC minimums. 

### **Tip 3: Don’t Forget to Moisturize**
Whether you’re washing your hands or applying hand sanitizer, keeping your skin hydrated is essential (check out our [guide to dermatologist-approved hand creams](https://aedit.com/aedition/dermatologist-approved-hand-creams-for-dry-skin)). “I recommend having moisturizer right next to hand soap at the sink and keeping a travel-size moisturizer with you at all times,” Dr. Spizuoco shares. 

And remember: there is no such thing as too much moisturizing. “Moisturize as many times as you wash your hands a day — or more,” she says. This is especially true for frequent hand sanitizer users. “There's really nothing you can avoid in hand sanitizers,” she explains. “What makes them work is the alcohol, and that is always the culprit that dries out the hands.”

Heading into winter, there is another must-have in the mix: hand cream. Between increased sanitizer usage, [more frequent washing](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-wash-hands-best-creams-tips-to-prevent-dry-skin) with good ol’ soap and water, and colder temperatures, our hands have taken a beating. A quality hand cream can be a saving grace for [healthy, hydrated hands](https://aedit.com/aedition/aesthetic-treatments-for-aging-hands). Here, we ask three dermatologists for their hand care tips and the hand creams, lotions, and balms they recommend for smoother skin. 

## **Why Use Hand Cream?**
The hands are one of the first places to show signs of aging because the skin is thinner and more delicate than the rest of the body. It is also often neglected. Soap, hand sanitizer, cold weather, arid air, and other extreme conditions damage the skin barrier and lead to [dryness](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-prevent-dry-skin-face-body-hands), dermatitis, and chapped skin (to name a few). “Barrier function refers to the skin's ability to protect the body from excessive transepidermal water loss, as well as to prevent the penetration of compounds into the body via the epidermi,” explains [Amy Spizuoco, DO](https://aedit.com/provider/amy-spizuoco-19341), a board certified dermatologist and founder of True Dermatology in New York City. “This also helps prevent skin breakdown, thus preventing flare ups of existing conditions such as [eczema](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-skincare-products-to-treat-eczema-flare-ups-in-the-winter) and [psoriasis](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-live-with-and-treat-psoriasis).”

Applying hand creams that are rich in emollient ingredients can repair a compromised skin barrier and restore the natural oils and moisture that are lost through hand washing and other activities.  

## **How to Choose a Hand Cream** 
When shopping for hand cream, what’s on the [ingredient list](https://aedit.com/aedition/category/read-the-label) matters. New York City-based board certified dermatologist [Dendy Engelman, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/dendy-engelman-md-312), says to look for emollients (think: shea butter, cocoa butter, or oils) that will help soften the skin. Occlusive ingredients like glycerin, petrolatum, sunflower oil, and jojoba oil, meanwhile, form a barrier on the skin to prevent water loss. “In medicine, we use it in wound dressings to provide optimal habitat for healing and prevent bacterial contamination,” she says. If the skin is damaged and cracked, she suggests [avoiding products with fragrance](https://aedit.com/aedition/fragrance-free-beauty-skincare-for-sensitive-skin) that could burn or irritate.

The texture of the product you choose is also important. “Thicker creams are more occlusive and provide better penetration, which means better hydration,” says [Julie Russak, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/julie-russak-md-4645), a board certified dermatologist and founder of Russak Dermatology Clinic in NYC. Even better if those gloves are touchscreen-friendly, so you don’t have to take them off to check your phone. 

For patients with extra dry skin, Dr. Russak suggests applying a thick layer of hand cream or balm and putting on cotton gloves before going to bed. “This forces the product to penetrate deeper into the skin overnight for more intense, longer-lasting hydration,” she says.

## **What Your Nails May Be Telling You** 
Chances are, you’ve experienced some of the more typical nail issues (think: dry, brittle nails, particularly during winter or in very arid climates). Depressions, pits, bruises, or white spots can all occur as a result of injury to the nail plate or nail bed. And, as we age, vertical ridges along the nails become increasingly present. Fungal infections (more common on the toenails), which cause nail discoloration and malformation, are another common nail condition that isn’t typically too concerning — unless, of course, you don’t treat it.

So, is there a rule of thumb (pun intended) to determine if your nail issue is relatively harmless or something more serious? “Any change in shape, growth pattern, or color of your nail should be sought out by a board certified dermatologist,” Dr. Rabach cautions. Here, we overview some of the signs that can show up on our fingertips:

### **1. Pale Nails**
Nails that are unusually pale can indicate a lack of hemoglobin (a protein that carries oxygen in the blood) in red blood cells or a lack of red blood cells in general. This could be caused by a variety of health conditions, including anemia, congestive heart failure, liver disease, and malnutrition.

### **2. White Nails**
Nails that are mostly white with a rim of color are also known as ‘Terry’s Nails’ — named after the doctor who first described them in 1954. They are associated with liver conditions like hepatitis and cirrhosis, as well as various kidney diseases and human immunodeficiency disease.

### **3. Yellow Nails**
Although commonly caused by a fungal infection (see above) or polish-stained nail plates, yellow nails can also be a sign of chronic lung disease (more common in smokers), severe thyroid disease, diabetes, a vitamin deficiency, or psoriasis. If the condition is accompanied by nail malformation, respiratory abnormalities, and lymphedema (swelling), it may be an indication of an extremely rare (and possibly genetic) disorder known as yellow nail syndrome.

### **4. Blue Nails**
If nails take on a bluish hue, that’s an indication that they’re not getting enough oxygen. This condition, known as cyanosis, could simply be the result of cold exposure. If it persists, it could be a reflection of a larger circulatory issue. Common causes include deep vein thrombosis, Raynaud’s phenomenon, lymphedema, heart failure, venous or arterial insufficiency, severe hypotension (low blood pressure). It could also be a sign of lung trouble, like emphysema, asthma, pneumonia, or a pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lung).

### **5. White Spots**
Contrary to popular belief, white spots or lines appearing in the nails aren’t the result of a calcium deficiency. The condition, technically known as leukonychia, is most commonly associated with injury to the nail bed — either from an accident or manicure/pedicure damage. Sometimes, it can be a sign of malnutrition, but not a lack of calcium.

### **6. Dark Lines or Spots Underneath Nails**
Unless caused by an acute injury, a dark streak running vertically under nails should be examined by a doctor right away, as it could be a sign of a type of skin cancer known as subungual melanoma. If left unchecked, it can spread to your lymph nodes. Sometimes, black or brown lines can be the result of other conditions like heart problems, lupus, vasculitis, fungal infection, psoriasis, Raynaud’s syndrome, or lung, kidney, or circulatory problems.

### **7. Spoon Nails**
Also known as koilonychia, this abnormality causes the nail to have a concave, scooped out appearance that can be deep enough to hold a drop of liquid. Spoon nails can be caused by iron deficiency anemia, says Dr. Rabach. Underlying causes include malnutrition, celiac disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, and a liver condition called hemochromatosis, which causes an overload of iron in the body.

### **8. Cracked, Brittle, or Split Nails**
Nails that are dry, peel easily, or seem brittle or thin may be damaged from weather or from too much nail polish. But they may also be showing signs of something more serious. The condition — technically known as onychoschizia — could be the result of vitamin deficiencies, anemia, or hypothyroidism.

### **9. Slow-Growing Nails**
Fun fact: nails grow more slowly in wintertime. But stress (both physical and psychological) can slow down nail growth, as well. Studies show that elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol can cause changes in our nails, which can be exacerbated by nervous, damaging habits like rubbing fingers over our nail plates.

### **10. Dented Nails**
“Beau’s lines — a horizontal dent that goes through the middle of the nail — can be a sign of high fever or other infections,” Dr. Rabach says. First diagnosed by French physician Joseph Beau in 1846, these depressions (formed as a result of trauma to the area beneath the cuticle) can also indicate vascular disease, diabetes, and vitamin deficiency.

### **11. Pitted or Rippled Nails**
If nails take on an orange peel appearance, it could be the result of an injury, or it might be a sign of psoriasis — especially if the pitting is accompanied by changes in shape, thickness, or color. Pitted nails are also a sign of eczema, or certain autoimmune conditions like alopecia areata and inflammatory arthritis.

### **12. Clubbed Nails**
This condition is characterized by an enlargement of the fingertips and a curving of the nails around the edge of the fingers. “Clubbing is a sign of diseases where being well-oxygenated is a problem, like lung cancer or asthma, or heart diseases,” Dr. Rabach shares.

### **13. Puffy, Red Cuticles**
If the skin surrounding the nail becomes red, inflamed, or painful, it could be a sign of an infection known as paronychia. Swelling in the nail bed in combination with small, discolored spots and/or nail malformation can also be indicative of lupus.

## **The Takeaway**
“Nails are an important clue to internal disease and could be a presenting sign,” Dr. Rabach says. It is also important to remember that nails can have intrinsic disease, like melanoma. So, if you are someone who keeps your fingers and toes polished at all times, be sure to examine them on occasion and discuss any dramatic changes with a dermatologist. If you are looking to strengthen your nails, Dr. Rigby says you should first consider your diet. “It’s essential to eat an appropriate amount of protein and iron,” she shares. “Whether this is animal or plant based, protein is an essential component to the health of our hair, skin, and nails.”

Whether you’ve adopted the habit of singing “Happy Birthday” twice or have chosen a different song a la the memes that have overtaken social media, cold and flu season, coupled with the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has put handwashing and personal hygiene in the spotlight. And, when you consider the fact that a [2018 United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) study](https://www.usda.gov/media/press-releases/2018/06/28/study-shows-most-people-are-spreading-dangerous-bacteria-around) found that people fail to wash their hands “properly” 97 percent of the time, we're all in need of a refresher course.

## **How To Wash Your Hands**
So, what is the proper way to wash your hands? Good ol’ fashion soap and water is the best way to kill germs and prevent the spread of bacteria. Below are five steps required for an effective cleanse:

1. Wet your hands with clean, running water 
2. Apply soap and lather 
3. Rub your hands together vigorously for 20 seconds — remembering to scrub the fronts and backs of the hands, in between the fingers, and under the fingernails
4. Rinse thoroughly in clean, running water 
5. Dry with a clean towel or shake dry

While it is not a substitute for washing with soap and water, alcohol-based hand sanitizers can get the job done in a pinch. Be sure the formula contains at least 60 percent alcohol and apply the product to the palm of one hand (check the label for proper dosage). For best results, rub hands together — covering all the surface area you would while washing your hands — until they are dry. 

## **When to Wash Your Hands**
Now that you know how to wash, how often should you be sudsing up? At a minimum, the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends](https://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/when-how-handwashing.html) washing your hands in the following situations: 

- Before, during, and after preparing food
- Before and after eating 
- Before and after caring for someone who is sick 
- Before and after treating a cut or wound
- After using the bathroom or changing a diaper
- After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
- After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste
- After touching garbage

Additionally, it doesn’t hurt to wash your hands any time you enter or exit a space, use public transportation, or get home from commuting. Wash your hands frequently throughout the work day, and, upon arriving home, you should always wash up and, if possible, change into clean clothes. 

Unless you have just finished a proper hand wash, **DO NOT** touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. When in doubt, follow the golden rule of dermatology and refrain from touching any part of your face. It’ll keep you from getting sick and will likely save you a pimple, too. 

## **How to Care For Over-Washed Hands**
If your daily handwashing quota has reached the dozens, you’re likely dealing with dry, irritated skin. Dry skin on your hands is not unlike dry skin on any other part of your body — it becomes scaly, red, tight, itchy, and dehydrated when the stratum corneum (i.e. the outer layer of the skin) is damaged. Washing your hands regularly with bacteria-fighting soaps and alcohol-based hand sanitizers draws moisture out of the skin and breaks down that protective barrier. 

But, all is not lost. There are some simple steps you can take to soften up the [hands, fingernails, and cuticles](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-damaged-dry-brittle-finger-nails-cuticles) that have dried out from over washing.

### **1. Wash With Lukewarm Water**
Much like Goldilocks, the water you use to wash your hands should not be too hot or too cold. Cool or lukewarm water will still kill germs and bacteria, while not being as harsh on the skin.

They say the eyes are the windows to the soul, but less discussed is the fact that your fingernails are actually a pretty strong reflection of your overall health. While genetics play a role in the size, shape, and strength of the nail, changes in nail color and texture can be indicative of illness, infection, nutritional deficiencies, and more. Even so, we spend a lot of time talking about skincare, hair care, and even self care, with nail care tending to be an afterthought — that is, if it is even a thought at all.

Moisturizing with a good hand cream is a fine place to start, but lotion alone won't cut it. Proper cuticle and nail care involves everything from eating a nutritious diet to giving your digits a break from the buffing, harsh chemicals, gel manicures, emery boards, and more that lead to nail problems like breakage and brittleness (to name a few!).

So, what is the best way to take care of your fingernails and cuticles? The AEDITION asked the experts about the ins and outs of nail care.

## __The Anatomy of Fingernails__ 
You might be aware that the nails as you see them on the tips of your fingers are composed of dead cells, but the nails are produced by living cells that start growing under the skin. As the new nail grows, it pushes the older cells out to form the hardened, flattened fingernail we see.

The nail is made up of the following parts:

- __Nail Plate__: The visible part of the nail composed of dead keratin cells (yes, the same protein that makes up your hair) that you can paint, trim, file, etc.
- __Nail Bed__: The skin beneath the nail plate
- __Lunula__: The half-moon shape at the base of the nail
- __Nail Folds__: The skin that frames and supports the nail plate on the right and left side is known as the lateral nail fold, while the skin surrounding the bottom edge of the nail is the proximal nail fold 
- __Matrix__: The hidden part of the nail beneath the proximal nail fold from which the nail grows
- __Eponychium__: Not to be confused with the cuticle, the eponychium refers to the living skin that lines the base of the nail and nail plate and exists to protect the matrix from bacteria and infection 
- __Cuticle__: Unlike the eponychium which is living, the cuticle is the dead tissue that is attached directly to the nail plate and can be easily removed 

Generally speaking, fingernails grow about 3.5 millimeters a month. Fingernails grow faster than toenails (read our [guide to the perfect pedicure](https://aedit.com/aedition/cosmetic-treatments-procedures-for-feet-nails-toes)), and men’s fingernails are known to grow faster than women’s. 

## __Common Fingernail Concerns__
When you consider how much you put your hands through on a daily basis, it should come as no surprise that fingernails are easily damaged. Couple that with internal factors like diet and nutrition that impact nail health, and nails can easily end up dry, brittle, and prone to breaking.

“Soft and brittle nails are very common and usually affect women,” says board certified dermatologist [Samer Jaber, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/samer-jaber-md-3882), of [Washington Square Dermatology](http://www.washingtonsqderm.com/) in Manhattan. “Brittle nails occur when there is dryness of the nail plate.” Nail brittleness can be exacerbated by everything from excessive hand washing to chemical exposure from prolonged nail polish wearing, he shares.

Additionally, Dr. Jaber sees patients with nail splitting, nail fungus, nail pigmentation, warts, broken nails, or nail pitting. The latter is often caused by skin conditions like psoriasis, alopecia areata, and eczema. 

A warning for those of us prone to biting or picking at our nails and/or cuticles: Dr. Jaber regularly treats both chronic and acute paronychia (i.e. inflammation of the proximal nail fold). “Chronic paronychia is very common in adult women, and it usually represents chronic irritation of the proximal nail fold from excessive nail picking or hand washing,” he explains. “Acute paronychia is an acute infection of the nail fold, which can be treated with topical antibiotics.”

## __Why You Need to Take Care of Your Fingernails & Cuticles__ 
"Think of taking care of your nails and cuticles as an important part of overall hygiene," says celebrity manicurist [Mazz Hanna](https://www.instagram.com/mazzhannabeauty/?hl=en), whose clients include Julia Roberts, Selma Blair, and Minnie Driver. "Picking and/or biting your nails or cuticles doesn’t just look bad. It can create a breeding ground for bacteria and can lead to a painful and sometimes dangerous infections."

Nail care isn't just about the nail plate itself. "So many problems start with dry cuticles. I wish people took better care of them," says celebrity nail artist [Tracylee Percival](https://www.instagram.com/luxebytracylee/?hl=en), who has worked with the likes of Nicole Kidman, Danai Gurira, and Tessa Thompson. "When cuticles are dry, they start to crack. That’s when the temptation to pick kicks in and bigger problems start."

The eponychium and cuticle are crucial to overall nail health, but Percival finds there is often a misconception about the difference between the two. "When I meet someone for the first time, I'm often told, 'Oh don't cut my cuticles,'" she explains. "I'm not sure who started this misconception that you can't cut cuticles. You can, as long as you know where the 'true cuticle' is.”

While the band of skin at the base of your nail (i.e. the eponychium) is live skin and should not be touched, the cuticle is dead tissue and can be removed. "The 'true cuticle' is the dead skin that is underneath the eponychium, attached to the nail plate," Percival says. "When the area is softened and the skin pushed back off the nail plate, this dead skin should flake off. If there is anything left hanging on, that can be gently trimmed off."

The distinction is a subtle one, and a nail technician that is not properly trained or is using a device like an electronic file to buff the skin around the nail can easily cause damage. Percival says the method of using an e-file is dangerous for a few reasons: 

1. "The skin they are removing is not all dead skin. They are also removing the eponychium," she says. "This skin is there for a reason — to protect the body from bacteria and germs from entering."
2. Cleanliness is always a concern when it comes to sharing nail tools and never is that more true than with an e-file. "The bits are not always sanitized between clients," Percival explains. "This can harbor many germs and bacteria and transfer to the next client."
3. While superficial nail damage grows out over time, damage caused to the matrix is permanent. "Drilling vibration can damage the matrix of the nail," she shares. "These drills are often pushed into the cuticle area and onto the nail, which causes the nail plate to thin and can also damage the matrix. This damage will show itself in a few months, usually in a wavy nail or in discoloration."

But these so-called 'Russian manicures' aren't the only salon treatment you should be wary of. Your go-to gel mani may be causing more harm than good, too.

## **How Do Hand Rejuvenation Treatments Work?**

### **Fat Transfer**
Fat transfers use fat from the patient’s own body. Fat cells are removed from a donor area, usually the stomach or the thighs, using a small needle. It is processed and cleaned, then injected into the hands (or other areas of the body). Fat cells have a high re-absorption rate, which means that some of the volume gained from the procedure will be lost as the body processes the re-injected fat. Your practitioner will likely need to overfill the area at first to account for this inevitable loss in volume. 

According to the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, fat grafting carries a lower risk of infection and delivers long-lasting, natural-looking results. It is usually carried out under local anesthesia. It takes around an hour to complete the whole process, from cell collection to re-injection, and can be done in-office. Patients may experience swelling and bruising after the procedure, which lasts for about a week. ### **Fillers** 
Dermal fillers have been used to smooth out wrinkles on the face for a number of years, but they have recently been FDA-approved to be used on hands, too. Additionally, fillers do not require any anesthesia, but a topical numbing cream may be used to limit the discomfort caused by the injections themselves. It is not uncommon for patients to experience some swelling or small bruises at the injection site, which typically resolves itself in a short period of time. Since dermal fillers are temporary, patients should expect to get them every year or so. Pricing for dermal fillers in the hands averages at $660 per syringe used.

### **Laser Ablation** 
Bulging veins on the hands are usually not a cause for medical concern, but they do make some people feel self-conscious. Age-related visible veins can be treated with laser ablation, the same kind used for varicose veins on legs. This treatment has a high success rate and can help minimize the need for more invasive surgery down the road.

Your dermatologist or plastic surgeon will assess which veins to treat during the initial consultation. The actual procedure is typically done in-office under local anesthesia. The practitioner will insert a diode laser system into the veins which cauterizes them and reduces visibility over time. After the procedure, the area will be bandaged and there may be some slight bleeding and minor swelling (that will last up to 10 days). ### **Chemical Peels**

### **IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) & Laser Skin Resurfacing**
