As a beauty editor, being non-committal to skincare products and tools is a part of the job. While there are lotions, potions, products, ingredients, and devices we know are tried and true, it’s also our duty to test out the latest launches to stay abreast of the innovations on the market. Consider it research. Therefore, by keeping my vanity open to new products, maintaining a curated routine has been a challenge. Yes, I am mindful of the ingredients I use and how they play together, but, I am not as selective on which cleanser or moisturizer I will use from week to week. So, it comes as no surprise that most of my [twenties](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-skincare-routine-products-ingredients-for-20s) were spent experimenting and prioritizing product testing over tailoring a personal [routine](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-maintain-youthful-skin-in-your-20s) – until I hit [30](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-skincare-routine-products-ingredients-for-30s).  

Knowing that my skin wont be smooth forever as fine lines, dullness, and pigmentation are a part of life, I knew it was time to do what I’ve been dreading: sticking to a routine with tretinoin. Because adding a prescription-strength vitamin A into the regimen requires a methodic approach (and patience), my hesitancy prevented me from diving into the deep end. Three months ago, I decided to finally incorporate the holy grail of youth-preserving ingredients into my routine, and here’s how that journey went. 

## **What is Tretinoin?** 

For the newbies, tretinoin is “[a vitamin A](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-vitamin-a-retinol-retinoids-in-skincare) derivative, a type of retinoid that is available as a prescription,” explains [Marisa Garshick, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/marisa-garshick-md-313), a board certified dermatologist based in New York. The workhorse ingredient works by regulating skin cell turnover and can help prevent and treat acne, explains Dr. Garshick. But, the fun doesn’t stop there. “Additionally, because it can also help boost collagen production, it can help to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, in addition to acne scarring,” she adds. To simply put it, the prescription-strength ingredient “can help to improve overall skin tone and texture.” 

The ingredient requires a prescription, and while Dr. Garshick was not my personal dermatologist, her insight is invaluable when it comes to all things skincare.  

## **How To Add Tretinoin To Your Skincare Routine** 

What kept me from starting sooner was the barrier to entry, it is a process that requires more than a prescription to truly make it work. Below are some of Dr. Garshick's tips and recommendations for starting tretinoin.  

### Do
- **Start Slow**: When adding any new product into your routine, especially one as potent as tretinoin, modesty is key. A pea-sized drop of the ivory cream is recommended once a week to build up a tolerance, and with time, the amount can be adjusted. As we always say, let your skin guide you and tell you what it needs. “It is best to incorporate tretinoin into a nighttime routine and, to start off using it just a few times per week and then increase the frequency as tolerated.” 
-  **Limit Exfoliants**: Over-exfoliating the skin can cause a weakened skin barrier, loss of moisture, and therefore, more breakouts to arise. “It is best to avoid using any ingredients that can be harsh on the skin at the same time as tretinoin, such as exfoliating acids, including salicylic acid, and benzoyl peroxide – unless directed to do so.”
- **Be Patient**: From purging to causing irritation, tretinoin is fickle as the barrier of entry is almost like an initiation process. Because the skin’s experiencing increased cell turnover, 

### Don’t 
- **Skip the SPF**: Sun protection should not only be the first line of defense in any skincare routine, it is vital when using a chemical exfoliant. “It is important to always be good about sun protection when incorporating a retinoid into your routine and wearing daily sunscreen,” adds Dr. Garshick.  
- **Worry About A Purge**: Purging, as it is lovingly known, is the process of the skin breaking out which may seem paradoxical considering the ingredient's efficacy when treating acne. However, this is perfectly normal and to be expected. If the acne persists, speak with a trusted dermatologist to adjust the routine or switch to a retinol alternative (hello, [bakuchiol](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-bakuchiol-in-skincare)).  
- **Complicate Things**: It’s natural to want to rush the process, the benefits are numerous, after all. During the adjustment period, focus on the basics and how your skin adjusts before incorporating additional products. “I recommend applying tretinoin after cleansing and before moisturizing, but for those with dry or sensitive skin, it may be used after applying moisturizer which may help reduce the potential for irritation in some individuals,” Dr. Gashick advises. 

## **My Experience With Tretinoin** 

We often discuss the timing of starting a product, the importance of doing a patch test, and the mindful approach required to ensure all ingredients work in harmony, so, to do this right, I overhauled my routine. My first step was to start tret during the winter months due to the decreased sun exposure I would have as my skin acclimates. My second step was cutting out other physical exfoliants. Due to tret being a heavy-duty chemical exfoliant, I opted to shelve my favorite [AHAs](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-topical-alpha-hydroxy-acids-in-skincare) and [BHAs](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-beta-hydroxy-acids-salicylic-acid-in-skincare) for the time being. Because of my hesitancy to stick to a set routine, I wasn’t going to take any risks with over-exfoliating. Here is a breakdown of my AM and PM routines.

Now, to provide clarity on my skin, it’s normal, not prone to acne, and has very little pigmentation. My reasoning for starting tretinoin was to address any fine lines and wrinkles that may arise with time, as my belief has always been that it’s better to prevent than correct. 

During the first few weeks of my journey, the [irritation](https://aedit.com/aedition/skincare-ingredient-alternatives-for-retinol-retinoids) was minimal, and though I was prepared for a purge (cue dramatic music), it never came. Rather than a noticeable breakout, my skin went through a few weeks of whiteheads popping up at inopportune times, slight redness here and there, and more dryness than I usually experience during the colder season. Overall, my fear of the unexpected proved to be just that, a fear.   

I have to admit that due to my being a regular person, my routine did waiver as I would try a new product on days when I wasn’t using tret. My goal was to be litigious throughout the process so as to not throw any curveballs, but I did experiment sporadically with a new gentle mask or two. I maintained my rule to avoid all other chemical exfoliants and was consistent with my SPF application (and re-application). 

After three months, I can confidently say that my skin looks better than I expected. My primary concerns (fine lines forming on my forehead and marionettes) were not as prominent as my skin adjusted to tret. 

## **The Takeaway** 

After carrying what felt like a dirty little secret of not incorporating vitamin A in my routine for quite some time, I am happy to report that the ingredient is all it’s cracked up to be. Offering a noticeable change to my skin in a matter of months, tretinoin has provided me with clearer skin, a smoother complexion, and fewer breakouts. Though the adjustment period felt like a waiting game, trusting the process proved to be worth it.

While there are an array of [professional treatments](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-professional-treatments-for-acne-and-acne-scars) and [at-home skincare](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-skincare-ingredients-to-treat-acne-blackheads-whiteheads) that can treat various aspects of breakouts, dermatologists and plastic surgeons haven’t had a singular [solution](https://aedit.com/procedure/acne-solutions) to offer patients that targets acne at the source without a laundry list of side effects – until now. ## **What Is AviClear?**

The laser treatment, which is safe for all [skin tones](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-fitzpatrick-skin-types), uses a 1726-nanometer wavelength to address the source of breakouts. Acne forms when sebum (read: oil), dead skin cells, and bacteria on the skin get trapped in the pores. AviClear™ works by selectively targeting oil glands, so that they produce less oil and, over time, less acne without damaging the rest of the skin. “The laser is actually being absorbed by the sebaceous glands, causing them to be down regulated, or destroyed, so that you then have less acne,” Dr. Moradzadeh explains. 

## **Who Is the Ideal Candidate for AviClear?**
One of the most compelling things about AviClear™ is just how inclusive the treatment is. “Unlike other lasers that you can’t use on [dark skin](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-laser-skin-hair-removal-treatments-for-darker-skin-tones), you can do this on anyone,” Dr. Moradzadeh says. It also doesn’t discriminate against certain types of acne, which means it can treat patients from adolescence through adulthood. Unsurprisingly, “teenagers are one of the main groups that want this treatment,” he says – though it’s not just about short-term relief. ## **How Does AviClear Treatment Work?**
The treatment protocol for AviClear™ is three sessions, spaced one month apart. Dr. Moradzadeh says each appointment treats the entire face – not just the areas you are prone to breakouts. “When you do the treatment, you are doing it over the whole face,” he shares. “Over the course of your three treatments, you are effectively treating all of the sebaceous glands.”

As Dr. Moradzadeh explains, patients are asked to wash their face upon arriving at the office, before the skin is “degreased” with acetone and “rehydrated” with water to improve contact. After the 15 to 30 minute treatment, he says most patients are “a little bit pink” for about 15 minutes. “There is really no downtime,” he shares. In fact, “most of my patients actually love the way they look after they leave because of that kind of micro-swelling glow in the skin,” Dr. Moradzadeh says. The effect “actually makes their acne look less visible when they walk out,” he adds. Patients can resume activities immediately after treatment.

If you’ve had a [laser treatment](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-ablative-laser-skin-resurfacing) in the past, you may be wondering about the comfort level. Even so, it’s important to share your current skincare regimen with your provider to ensure you are setting yourself up for success. “I usually just review their protocol and see if there is anything better they could be doing as they get through the first six months to their clearer skin,” Dr. Moradzadeh notes. ## **What Are the Results of AviClear?**
If you are familiar with Accutane, you may know that it is a brand name for isotretinoin, a potent form of vitamin A that was approved by the FDA in 1982 for the treatment of severe, resistant, nodular acne that is unresponsive to conventional therapy. The orally prescribed medication treats acne by reducing the size of oil glands and the amount of oil they produce. What makes AviClear™ so unique is that it treats acne in the same way, but it does so without the additional quality of life impacts. So, what does that mean in practice? “When you first start Accutane, there is this phenomenon called ‘the purge’ where you get a breakout,” he explains. “With AviClear™, it is very similar.” One to two weeks after your first treatment, you can expect to have a purge period. “After your second treatment, you see less of that,” he shares. “And then, three months after your third treatment, you notice a significant reduction in your acne.” About six months after your third treatment, “you will usually love your skin,” he notes.

In the clinical studies, 80 percent of patients saw at least half of their acne clear after three treatments, and 87 percent said they were “satisfied” or “very satisfied” at week 12. The results continued to improve over the course of six months. Furthermore, any breakouts patients experienced post-treatment were reported to be shorter with fewer and smaller flare-ups. 

While AviClear™ has not yet been studied for the improvement of [acne scars](https://aedit.com/concern/acne-scars), Dr. Moradzadeh says some patients with “reddish- or pink-colored scars” find that they go away during treatment, while appearance of the remainder of their acne scars is minimized. “We are seeing skin quality improvements as a whole, but we have other treatments that are very specific for [acne scar management](https://aedit.com/procedure/acne-scar-solutions),” he notes.

## **The Takeaway**
As Dr. Moradzadeh says, AviClear™ is a “game changer” because it’s the first true acne innovation in more than 30 years. But it’s not just about the aesthetics of clearer skin. [Research](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/bjd.16099) has found that those diagnosed with acne are at an increased risk (40 to 60 percent greater) of developing major depression, and Dr. Moradzadeh has treated patients who don’t want to leave the house or go to school because of their skin. “Acne has such a strong impact on people’s self esteem and how they feel about themselves, and it hurts to not be able to give them something that is amazing,” he says. “So, to have something now that gives them equal results to Accutane feels good.” For the first time in a long time – or maybe ever – “treating acne is a happy thing,” he notes.

With that said, it’s hard to believe zinc oxide can do even more good, right? Well, apart from working as an antioxidant, it also offers anti-inflammatory benefits for [acne-prone skin](https://aedit.com/aedition/difference-between-oily-and-acne-prone-skin) and helps other ingredients in your skincare and wellness routine shine. The AEDITION spoke with skincare experts to learn more about the benefits of zinc oxide and how to incorporate it into your regimen. 

## **What Is Zinc Oxide?** 
In simplest terms, zinc oxide is a white, powdery mineral that is used in a wide range of skincare, cosmetics, and personal care products, including sun protection, makeup, bath soaps, and more. “Zinc oxide is a naturally occurring white mineral found in zincite,” says Joshua Ross, a celebrity aesthetician for [Sonage](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fsonage.com%2F) and founder of [SkinLab](https://skinlabusa.com/) in Los Angeles. “This mineral can be combined with other ingredients to give it a tint that matches natural skin tones.”

Providing the broadest spectrum UVA and UVB protection (the former causes sun damage, while the latter leads to sunburns), zinc oxide is [approved](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/understanding-over-counter-medicines/sunscreen-how-help-protect-your-skin-sun) by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use as an active ingredient in sunscreen. For that reason alone, it should be a mainstay in any skincare regimen, but it actually does even more for the skin. “Besides supporting skin healing for decades, zinc oxide today is a common active ingredient found in physical sunscreens, diaper rash creams, calamine lotions, etc.,” explains [Amy Spizuoco, DO](https://aedit.com/provider/amy-spizuoco-19341), a board certified dermatologist and founder of True Dermatology in New York City. “Zinc oxide is most commonly added to topical solutions such as moisturizers, sunscreens, and makeup products like foundations.” 

## **The Benefits of Zinc Oxide in Sun Care & Skincare**

Where do we begin? Ross explains that, “in addition to sun protection, zinc has benefits including reducing [inflammation](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-inflammaging), soothing, and promotes healing for [scars and wounds](https://aedit.com/concern/scars), and can help keep conditions like [eczema and psoriasis](https://aedit.com/aedition/comparing-eczema-vs-psoriasis) under control.” It also supports the skin barrier. “Additionally, the barrier formed by zinc oxide on the skin also helps to reduce transepidermal water loss, or TEWL, contributing to long-lasting moisturization,” notes Harry Fallick, MD, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon and founder of [CoTZ](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fcotzskincare.com%2F). One notable misconception about the mineral: That it clogs pores. “The particles are too large to penetrate the pore, so they sit on top of the pore acting as skin protection and barrier which can keep pollutants out of the skin,” Ross adds.

In sun care, zinc oxide is one of two physical blockers (alongside titanium dioxide) that can be used in sunscreen. “Zinc oxide works by ultimately refracting and reflecting UV rays away from the skin,” Dr. Fallick explains. “It does not absorb into the skin or the bloodstream and is very gentle, making it perfect for sensitive skin, children, or [post-procedure](https://aedit.com/aedition/post-procedure-skincare-makeup-product-guide) use.” This hopefully doesn’t need repeating, but sun protection is not just for aesthetic benefits. “Not having significant sun protection can lead to [sunburn](https://aedit.com/aedition/dermatologist-tips-for-soothing-sunburn),” Dr. Spizuoco warns. “Having five or more sunburns doubles your risk for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.” 

Adequate sun protection is the best defense against all types of [skin cancer](https://aedit.com/aedition/skin-cancer-facts). “This is why I wanted to create a product that is accessible and easy to use, two of my colleagues had skin cancers removed and application, as well as reapplication, is incredibly important when it comes to sunblock,” explains Samantha Brett, the founder of Australian suncare brand [Naked Sundays](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fnakedsundays.com%2F). She acknowledges that, in the past, sunblocks with zinc oxide have gotten a bad rap for being thick, difficult to rub in, and leaving a white-cast on the skin. Fortunately, product formulations have come a long way and mineral sunscreens can now have a virtually translucent finish. 

### **The Benefits of Zinc in Food**
This article is about the benefits of topical zinc oxide, but we’d be remiss not to mention the role it plays in diet and nutrition. [Zinc](https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Zinc-HealthProfessional/#en2) is not naturally produced by the body, but it is an essential mineral for many bodily functions. It fortifies the immune system, aids in brain development and memory, and prevents cellular damage (to name a few). Recent [studies](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25200490/#:~:text=Zinc%20in%20human%20plays%20an,decreased%20generation%20of%20inflammatory%20cytokines.) have found that it can also help alleviate the oxidative stress that leads to certain chronic diseases – especially ones that crop up with age. Foods such as chickpeas, red meat, shellfish, and cashews are good sources of zinc. If you are not getting enough zinc through your diet, supplementation may be an option.

## **The Best Candidates for Zinc Oxide** 
Due to zinc oxide’s soothing properties, anti-inflammatory benefits, and versatility, everyone is a candidate for a zinc-powered product – though the type of product you use will depend on your skin type. Those with acne-related concerns may be using a topical with zinc oxide, as per their dermatologist’s recommendations. And if you have some calming products in your over-the-counter skincare routine, there is a good chance zinc oxide is making an appearance.

There is no excuse not to wear sunscreen every single day, no matter the weather, but those with acne or other [skin sensitivities](https://aedit.com/aedition/difference-between-sensitive-vs-sensitized-skin) may be wary of adding any potential irritants to their complexion. Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are widely considered to be the gentlest and safest sun care products. “Zinc oxide does not cause any severe side effects, and cases of allergic reactions due to zinc oxide are rare,” Dr. Spizuoco shares. She does, however, advise women who are [pregnant or breastfeeding](https://aedit.com/aedition/skincare-ingredients-to-avoid-during-pregnancy-breastfeeding) to consult with their doctor before introducing new products to their routine.

## **How to Find the Right Zinc Oxide Product** 
At this point, you hopefully realize that you’re not only going to see zinc oxide listed on sunscreen tubes. ### **Sun Care**
When it comes to zinc oxide in sunscreen, Ross recommends finding a product with no less than 10 percent. “This is regardless of SPF claims – be it  20, 30, or 40,” he says. “We know that 10 percent zinc will provide the needed protection to block out UVA, as well as UVB rays.” The exception to this 10 percent rule is formulas that pair zinc oxide with other actives that enhance its efficacy. CoTZ sunscreens, for example, combine zinc oxide and titanium dioxide because “you can achieve a higher SPF with a lower total percentage of total active ingredients than with zinc oxide alone, while still achieving good UVA coverage,” Dr. Fallick explains. This is because “zinc oxide both complements titanium dioxide’s protective abilities and extends photoprotection to the skin where titanium dioxide is insufficient,” he adds.

We’re all generally aware of the benefits of exfoliating the skin, but, depending on your skin type, the brightening and clarifying step may be a bit too aggressive. If you fall into that camp and are longing for smoother, clearer, and more radiant skin, we’ve got a solution. Enter mandelic acid. A member of the [alpha hydroxy acid (AHA)](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-topical-alpha-hydroxy-acids-in-skincare) family, the drupe-derived active is much gentler – though no less effective – than its fellow AHAs. ## **What Is Mandelic Acid?**
First, let’s talk about acids – the skincare kind. In the case of acne, a [2019 study](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31553119/) found that a chemical peel with 45 percent mandelic acid was as effective as a chemical peel with 30 percent [salicylic acid](https://aedit.com/procedure/salicylic-acid-peel) for those with mild to moderate acne. Why Mandelic Acid Is The Gentle AHA Your Skincare Routine Needs

In the words of Hollywood, Botox is a multi-hyphenate. Botulinum toxin type A injections, including [Botox®](https://aedit.com/procedure/botox), [Dysport®](https://aedit.com/procedure/dysportr), [Jeuveau®](https://aedit.com/procedure/jeuveau), and [Xeomin®](https://aedit.com/procedure/xeomin), can reduce migraines when injected into the scalp, [curb underarm sweat](https://aedit.com/procedure/botox-for-hyperhidrosis) when sent to the pits, or [beat incontinence](https://aedit.com/aedition/botox-injections-for-vaginismus) via the bladder – not to mention one of their earliest credits, smoothing wrinkles. Some providers and small studies have also found that [neuromodulators](https://aedit.com/aedition/comparing-neurotoxin-botulinum-type-a-injections-botox-dysport-jeuveau-xeomin) can help reduce sebum (read: oil) production, putting a temporary end to the oily skin and breakouts that may have sent patients to the dermatologist in the first place. Here’s what you need to know about how Botox and the like affect the oiliness of the skin.

## **Does Botox Affect Oil Production?**
The short answer is yes, but it’s not as simple as going in for your regular wrinkle-reducing touch up. “Microinjections of Botox can be used to control oily skin, reducing sebum production and improving acne,” says [Michele Green, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/michele-green-md-34642), a board certified dermatologist in New York City. In this case, the emphasis is on the term ‘micro.’ “This treatment involves superficial injections into the skin barrier – not past the skin barrier or into the muscle, where neuromodulators are injected to treat fine lines and wrinkles – in areas where oil, sebum, and sweat production occur,” explains [Dendy Engelman, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/dendy-engelman-md-312), a board certified dermatologist in NYC. “This process ultimately helps reduce oil, redness, pore visibility, and [acne](https://aedit.com/concern/acne).”

In a [2012 study](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23293895/#:~:text=Conclusion%3A%20Intradermal%20injection%20of%20botulinum,in%20patients%20with%20oily%20skin.), 25 patients with oily skin received Botox injections in the forehead, and 21 of them (that’s an impressive 91 percent) were satisfied with the way their skin stayed mattified for up to three months after being injected. In 2015, [researchers tested](https://academic.oup.com/asj/article/35/5/600/240008) 42 volunteers with oily skin by administering Botox in five injection sites across the forehead, then measured the change in oil production around the treatment areas using a device aptly named the Sebumeter. The study found the lowest amounts of sebum closest to the injection points, with more oil occurring farthest away from where Botox was administered. Bruce Katz, MD, a board certified dermatologist and founder of [JUVA Skin and Laser Center](https://www.juvaskin.com/) in NYC, says he has seen Botox help some of his patients with oily skin – but not all. When it does work, it’s because “Botox reduces the muscle movements surrounding the oil glands,” he notes. 

If you have oily skin, we’re preaching to the choir. But, if you’re curious, people with ‘oily skin’ have sebaceous glands in the dermis that produce too much oil, Dr. Green shares. While oily skin and acne-prone skin [are not synonymous](https://aedit.com/aedition/difference-between-oily-and-acne-prone-skin), increased oil can lead to pore congestion and breakouts. “The T-zone, which includes the forehead, nose, and chin, has a higher density of sebaceous follicles that contribute to higher sebum production,” Dr. Green says. With that in mind, it’s time to get more specific about how neurotoxin injections can treat oiliness.

## **Can Botox Be a Treatment for Oily Skin?**
Like we said, the Botox® you are getting to soften your forehead lines isn’t the same as the injections you would get to mattify your complexion. “Neuromodulator treatments for forehead lines and other wrinkles are injected directly into the muscle, whereas microinjections do not penetrate past the skin layer,” Dr. Engelman explains. “Therefore, someone who was receiving treatment for forehead lines would not experience a decrease in oil production as they would from microinjections.”

That’s not to say [microinjections](https://aedit.com/aedition/aquagold-botox-microdosing-facial) can’t offer a smoothing effect – it’s just not akin to traditional, full-dose treatment. “Depending on what you are being treated for, some injectors go a little deeper when administering microinjections so as to slightly soften the muscle for wrinkle reduction, but not paralyze,” she shares. While microinjections can be injected all over the face to improve skin texture, the T-zone is the most problematic area for most patients with oily skin. “Oil production is most common in the T-Zone, which includes the skin across the forehead and down the nose,” Dr. Engelman notes.

## **How Long Do the Mattifying Results Last?**
Like any neurotoxin injection, the results of microinjections are not immediate. They usually kick in over the course of five to 10 days. And, “similar to traditional Botox injections, the benefits of microinjections last up to three to four months,” Dr. Engelman shares. While you may be used to judging when you’re [due for a touch up](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-frequently-to-get-non-surgical-cosmetic-procedures-like-dermal-filler-botox-chemical-peel) based on how much your forehead or brows start to move again, the wearing off of microinjections for oily skin usually involves oiliness returning. “When Botox wears off, sebum production may return to the normal baseline,” Dr. Green says. 

If you are looking for a way to minimize oil production, micro-Botox can be a singular solution. “For those with oily skin, microinjections serve as a standalone treatment option, separate from neuromodulator injections for fine lines and wrinkles,” Dr. Engelman says. “Neuromodulator treatments for oil production are injected into the skin barrier – because oil production occurs in the skin – rather than into the muscle and, therefore, offer different benefits.” To put a finer point on it, you are not necessarily killing two birds with one stone. “A traditional Botox treatment should not affect your sebum production,” she adds.

With the average cost of neurotoxin injections priced at [$408 per visit](https://aedit.com/procedure/botox/cost), a quarterly trip to the dermatologist or plastic surgeon’s office is certainly more expensive than a prescription topical or a bottle of Clean & Clear. For that reason, it’s best to talk to your doctor about all of your skin-mattifying options first. In Dr. Katz’s opinion, “there are many more cost effective methods to control oil production.” But, if you’ve already budgeted for Botox, it can be a [shine-reducing solution](https://aedit.com/procedure/acne-solutions). “Neuromodulator injections, like Botox, can be used to reduce oiliness with just a few injections per year,” Dr. Engelman says.

Using neurotoxins to reduce sebum production is not the same as reducing wrinkles.

Strange but true, the protein powder you down every day in the name of good health may be the cause for [breakouts](https://aedit.com/concern/acne). The reason? Those milk-based hormones found in whey protein stimulate the sebaceous glands, which can lead to acne. But before you give up on the powdered goodness altogether, it’s essential to know the role of dairy and how it affects the skin.

## **You Are What You Eat (and Drink)**
Ideally, everything that we consume should be beneficial and nutritious to the body. But life isn’t perfect and neither are our diets. While we are all about everything in moderation, there are plenty of regularly consumed foods and products that we believe to be good for us when, in reality, they aren’t.

Literally, every single morsel of food that we eat and every drop of liquid we drink becomes us. Our food is broken down and used for cellular growth and repair. The types of food we eat tell our hormones how to influence physiological changes in the body. “So, if we are eating a clean, minimally processed diet full of vegetables and fruits with lean proteins and healthy fats, then we are giving our bodies great ‘building blocks’ for every single cell in the body, including skin cells,” explains [Jennifer Hanway](https://jenniferhanway.com/), a board certified holistic nutritionist. She states that pairing this with foods that keep hormone levels stable helps keep the body functioning optimally from the inside out.

Good skin [starts in the gut](https://aedit.com/aedition/relationship-between-unhealthy-gut-microbiome-skin-conditions). The skin, our largest organ, directly reflects what is occurring inside the body, whether that's a harmonious balance of gut flora or an imbalance or deficiency of some sort. Jessica Sepel, nutritionist and founder of [JSHealth Vitamins](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fus.jshealthvitamins.com%2Fpages%2Fshop-all), says that the state of the gut affects the absorption of a nutrient, which may influence the progression of a condition or disease. “It's important to feed the skin all the amazing nutrients from the inside and limit foods that may be counterproductive to your complexion," she says. And when the gut is unbalanced due to a poor diet, it shows on the skin.

Certain foods, like dairy, processed meals, and [sugar-laden treats](https://aedit.com/aedition/the-impact-of-candy-sugar-sweets-on-teeth-and-skin) (all considered pro-inflammatory foods), instigate skin issues like redness, breakouts, dryness, and even eczema. But when it comes to protein powders — mainly whey-based ones — the connection to breakouts is considered solid since whey protein is milk-derived.

## **Milk It Real Good**
For years, it has been suggested that milk consumption may be an underlying cause for acne — other factors like hormones, bacteria, a buildup of dead skin cells, and oil production (to name a few) are also part of the formula for breakouts. However, the first correlation between the two actually [dates back to the 1960s](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20338665/), when naysayers dismissed the idea of a relationship between diet and acne. From there, research by [Clement A. Adebamowo et al.](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15692464/) further established the link between acne and dairy and discovered that milk intake increased among adolescents with acne in an analysis of women who had experienced acne in their teenage years. “They found a positive link with acne for total milk intake and skim milk intake,” Sepel says. However, it's important to note that the limitations of this study included the self-reporting diet. 
 
To add to the growing composite of data that [links diet to breakouts](https://aedit.com/aedition/relationship-between-food-and-acne-breakouts), the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) [reports](https://www.aad.org/public/diseases/acne/causes/diet) women who drink two glasses of skim milk daily are more likely to have acne than those who don't. “Although the role of diet and acne is still being explored, research shows an association between [high-glycemic foods and acne](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3257617/),” says [Marisa Garshick, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/marisa-garshick-md-313), a board certified dermatologist in New York City. “And limited evidence shows that some dairy (specifically skim milk) may be associated with acne.” 
 
And nutritionists notice the parallels, too. “In my practice and clinical experience, there is a huge link between skin health and dairy consumption, although this is still considered controversial and not necessarily widely accepted," Hanway notes. More [recent research](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29778512/) shows a clearer association between the two, especially when exploring processed, low-fat forms of dairy. 

Regular consumption of dairy can contribute to [acne](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-hormonal-acne-body-acne-cystic-acne-whiteheads-blackheads) in two ways:
 
1. **Gut Inflammation**: Dairy can cause inflammation in the gut, and high levels of inflammation increase the likelihood of breakouts.
2. **Increased Insulin & Testosterone**: It can also raise insulin and testosterone levels. Sepel explains that insulin-like growth factors (a hormone similar in structure to insulin) increase androgen levels (hormones that contribute to growth and reproduction), which may increase the production of sebum (the oil in our skin) and, therefore, contribute to acne.

As acne relates specifically to cow's milk, “we do not fully know how it contributes to acne, though it's thought that some of the hormones in milk may contribute to inflammation and breakouts,” Dr. Garshick shares. And it's not just whole milk that's to blame — skim milk is an equal culprit in the influx of dairy-prompted breakouts and even shows a more significant association with acne than other types of milk in some studies. Many of these findings, however, highlight the association but do not suggest that eliminating the food or drink will be the cure for even reducing the existing acne.

The net-net: If you reduce or cut it out from your diet, the acne may still exist.

## **All About Whey Protein**
We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but, if the skin is influenced by dairy and milk products and all that comes from them, then consuming milk-derived whey protein regularly very well could be the reason for [clogged pores](https://aedit.com/aedition/at-home-treatments-for-clogged-pores) and pimples.

The thought is that whey protein, unlike other types of protein powders, may trigger the release of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), which can increase androgen and sebum production, and subsequent inflammation, leading to potential breakouts. Any pro-inflammatory food is often associated with problematic skin, and, as Dr. Garshick explains, foods with a high glycemic index lead to spikes in blood sugar levels and may trigger an increase in sebum production and inflammation, contributing to acne. 

That's not to say that all other types of protein are off the hook for being blamed for blemishes. But, again, it goes back to what we fuel our bodies with. If a non-whey-based protein powder results in poor gut health and increased inflammation, it too can negatively alter gut health and increase hormone secretion. “A hard-to-digest plant-based protein powder can raise inflammation and affect gut health (negatively affecting the skin), and a whey protein powder may cause these effects *and* trigger an increase in testosterone uptake, which leads to breakouts and acne," Hanway shares.

Cow's milk-derived whey protein is one of the most popular types of protein because of its high level of essential amino acids. Sepel says that leftover milk that thickens during cheese production contains six different growth factors linked to acne. “Whey protein is responsible for the effects of milk that stimulate the production and activity of insulin, which may contribute more to acne than the actual fat or dairy content,” Sepel shares.

Whey is one of two types of proteins in milk (the other is casein protein). There's less whey protein in milk than casein (about 20 percent compared to 80 percent), but whey is more common because it's a fast-acting digestible protein. As a result, the body consumes it quickly, so it acts as a good source of post-exercise fuel. In addition, whey protein is chock-full of branched chain amino acids (BCAAs), increasing muscle growth. “Dairy-based protein powders, such as whey or casein, may trigger acne because the levels of the amino acid leucine are higher in meat and/or dairy-containing diets compared to vegetarian and vegan diets,” Sepel explains. Leucine activates a growth regulator, possibly aggravating inflammation involved in acne.

While whey is the primary source in protein powders of unhappy skin, there is the potential for other ingredients to be present that can wreak havoc on your complexion, too. Always look at the ingredients list to see the exact type of protein powder inside. “Anything that says ‘whey protein isolate,’ ‘whey protein concentrates,’ ‘milk protein,’ or ‘casein’ means that it contains dairy,” Sepel says. A protein made from pea, soy, hemp, or brown rice is vegan and does not contain dairy. Generally, all labels should disclose if a formula contains dairy or is vegan.

There is science behind the notion of protein powder pimples. Nestle reported that [its findings](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21335995/) directly correlate with whey protein and insulin spikes, which influences inflammation, oil production, and an overgrowth of skin cells. Another [study](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22988649/) linked teenage athletes to constant breakouts after consuming whey-based protein. 

But not everyone who drinks whey-based protein will experience acne breakouts. “If someone has a healthy gut (low intestinal permeability and a well-balanced, diverse microbiome), they may not react to a dairy-based protein powder if they consume it sporadically and do not eat a diet high in other inflammatory foods,” Hanway says. “Those with poor gut health and a diet high in processed foods may experience more breakouts from this type of protein powder.”

Like milk, many experts believe whey increases testosterone spikes and androgen activity, leading to blemishes via overstimulated oil glands. A [study](https://scialert.net/abstract/?doi=jms.2018.27.33) investigated the effect of whey protein on muscle performance by evaluating testosterone hormones. “The results showed that testosterone showed no significant difference between both groups after the sixth week and that whey protein combined with resistance exercise might enhance muscle strength and growth,” Sepel says.  

## **Skin-Friendly Protein Options**
If you're not quite ready to give up on your daily protein shake, there are a few ways to skirt the potential blemish issue. 

- **Consider the milk source.** Opt for nut-based milk instead of skim, low-fat, and whole milk. These varieties won't stimulate the sebaceous glands, which can lead to acne. 
- **Choose vegan protein sources instead.** From fruit- and vegetable-based proteins to soy-based ones and even hemp, there is now something for everyone. - **Majorly cut down.** If you can’t part ways with your whey protein powder, Sepel says to cut down on the servings and frequency. “If you have it every day, try halving the dose or enjoy it every second day,” she suggests.

According to a [study](https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamadermatology/fullarticle/479093#:~:text=Background%20In%20westernized%20societies%2C%20acne,women%20and%203%25%20of%20men.) in the *Journal of the American Medical Association*, 40 to 54 percent of adults over the age of 25 have some degree of facial [acne](https://aedit.com/concern/acne). By the time we reach middle age, the skin condition is more present in women (12 percent) than men (3 percent). Acne grows rarer as we get older, but the emotional toll of breaking out may not. 

Though many facets of [acne treatment](https://aedit.com/procedure/acne-solutions) are the same regardless of sex, the causes and some of the solutions can differ. We spoke to board certified dermatologists to learn more about the specifics of adult acne in men.

## **What Causes Acne in Men?**
In all genders, acne is caused by an interplay of several factors: skin bacteria, excess oil production, irregularities in skin cell turnover that contribute to [blocked pores](https://aedit.com/aedition/at-home-treatments-for-clogged-pores) and inflammation, says [Brendan Camp, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/brendan-camp-md-34645), a board certified dermatologist in New York City. Adult acne is more likely to stem from lifestyle factors like stress, diet, and grooming habits, along with genetic predisposition, says [Rachel Maiman, MD](https://marmurmedical.com/about/rachel-maiman-md/), a board certified dermatologist in NYC. Simple personal care changes, like always showering after exercise or changing the pillowcases more often, can help prevent breakouts. Treatment may differ from that of traditional acne, so, if you’re dealing with a beard breakout, talk to a dermatologist who can make the distinction. 

## **How to Treat Acne in Men** 
Treating acne is a delicate balance. “The most important part about treating acne is being consistent with a [treatment regimen](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-skincare-ingredients-to-treat-acne-blackheads-whiteheads) but not overdoing it,” Dr. Camp shares. Since acne is a chronic issue, it’s often necessary to continue treatment even once the active breakouts are cleared. “Many patients will stop treatment once their skin is improved, only to have a flare again,” he says. On the other hand, some patients are overzealous with treatment, thinking that more medication will accelerate acne-clearing. Too much washing, too many spot treatments, or too vigorous exfoliation will cause more skin irritation and make breakouts worse.

Unless you have the pain tolerance of a horse, there’s no getting around [topical numbing cream](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-anesthesia) during many cosmetic treatments to make them more comfortable. Seemingly every procedure under the sun utilizes it, from [lasers](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-ablative-laser-skin-resurfacing) and [injectables](https://aedit.com/procedure/dermal-filler-and-injectable-solutions) to [thread lifts](https://aedit.com/procedure/thread-lift), [microneedling](https://aedit.com/procedure/microneedling), and even [microblading](https://aedit.com/procedure/microblading) — the list goes on and on.  

Over the years, numbing cream has encountered its fair share of cautionary tales. In the early 2000s, reports of the cream were associated with life-threatening side effects, including irregular heartbeats, seizures, and even death (an extremely rare effect), due to abnormal amounts being applied. More recently, there's buzz saying that numbing cream can instigate [pimples](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-get-rid-of-a-pimple). Experts, however, are not convinced the anesthetizing agent is to blame.  

So, can numbing cream cause breakouts? Here, we get down to the nitty-gritty details to unearth the real story about the topical anesthetic and its ability — or inability (depending on many factors) — to be the cause of uninvited pimples.

## **How Numbing Cream Works**
Before launching into the debate at hand, here's a quick lesson on numbing cream and how it works. The first reported use of local anesthetic was back in 1860. Then, it was cocaine that acted as the leading anesthetizing agent; today, it’s primarily lidocaine. But lidocaine isn’t the only option. There are different types of ‘-caines,’ which are generally lidocaine, benzocaine, and tetracaine, or a combination of the three, says [Angela Lamb, MD](https://angelalambmd.com/), a board certified dermatologist in New York City. “Each has a different time of onset and lasts a different amount of time, so they are great to mix and give to patients for rapid effects and numbing that lasts long enough to make it through an entire procedure,” she explains.

If you’re curious how a topical on the surface of the skin can create a numbing effect, [Scott Paviol, MD](https://pavioldermatology.com/), a board certified dermatologist in Charlotte, NC, explains it this way: “The lidocaine in numbing creams works by blocking sodium channels which act to stop nerves from sending impulses.” Simply put, it stops the nerves from sending signals to the brain. “Whenever we perform procedures, we aim to make the experience as comfortable as possible for the patient,” he says. “Therefore, topical numbing is a great choice for a variety of procedures, including microneedling, lasers, and injectables.”

Applying numbing cream is pretty straightforward. It starts as a thin layer of cream-gel that starts to ‘melt’ (for lack of a better term) the longer it sits on the skin. In about five minutes, it begins to take effect. “However, the time we leave on the cream is dependent on the procedures,” Dr. Lamb says. “For injections, it normally sits for 15 to 20 minutes; laser resurfacing requires 30 to 60 minutes.”

It's essential to know that numbing cream is generally only effective in the areas where it is applied. Your doctor will remove the numbing cream after the skin feels numb. Then, the skin is cleansed again, usually with an alcohol wipe, to thoroughly remove any remaining residue. As a result, there should be minimal pain or discomfort with the treatment that's about to ensue — though patients may report minimal tingling or itching.

Some providers choose to give numbing cream to the patient to apply at home before their procedure to save time in the office, however, not every doctor agrees with this method. Dr. Paviol warns that it's vital for the person administering the topical numbing to understand how to use it appropriately and how to look for and manage any side effects. “If you use a medication without knowing how to use it properly, it can lead to unwanted side effects,” he says. “I do not recommend using topical numbing without the recommendation of how to use it from a medical professional, as it is possible to have systemic effects if not used correctly.”
 
## **Comfortably Numb… and Breaking Out?**
Sure, skin irritations and blemishes can arise from just about everything, and Dr. Paviol explains that the idea that numbing cream can induce [acne](https://aedit.com/concern/acne) isn’t as far-fetched as it seems. “Often, stressors, whether they are physical or mental, cause breakouts to the skin,” he says. That treatment you have planned and its numbing cream constitute stressors. “Putting numbing cream on the skin and performing a procedure puts the [skin into a state of stress](https://aedit.com/aedition/impact-of-stress-on-skin-acne-wrinkles-dryness) — purposefully injuring the skin to create the desired cosmetic effect — and this can cause the skin to break out for a few days after a procedure,” Dr. Paviol adds.

Even so, Dr. Lamb says that post-procedure breakouts are likely not happening because of numbing cream. “Post-laser folliculitis is very common, and, if you go to a good physician, they should know how to avoid this,” she notes. “I will not share my secret, but there is something that I give all my patients post-procedure to make sure this does not happen.”
 
Irritation and allergic reactions can also occur. There are different categories of numbing agents, Dr. Paviol explains, so it’s possible to be allergic to one and not another. “Typically, reactions are mild and self-limited and include redness, itching, and hives,” he says. But more severe reactions are possible, if rare. “That is why it’s important to be under the care and supervision of a medical professional who can help you to manage complications should they occur,” he reiterates.

If, by chance, a microscopic amount of numbing cream gets pushed into the skin by a needle or cannula, Dr. Lamb says there's no reason for concern. Any excess product shouldn't cause a breakout.

## **Post-Procedure Skincare Matters**
Post-treatment care holds as much weight as the procedure itself. When you sign up for a cosmetic procedure, you’re also choosing to actively participate in the healing process. “If you’re investing in a procedure, invest in the recovery from the procedure so you can get the best possible result,” Dr. Paviol says.

Depending on the treatment, your skin may be compromised afterward. The post-procedure recovery phase is all about [letting the skin heal properly](https://aedit.com/aedition/skincare-after-facial-plastic-surgery-procedures), which is why your doctor will give you specific care instructions that are important to follow. “Procedures stress the skin, and post-procedure care aims to let the skin rest, recover, and heal,” Dr. Paviol shares. As such, he says, bland emollients and post-procedure balms with no active ingredients are best to use. 

## **The Takeaway** 
So, while you may experience breakouts after an aesthetic treatment or procedure, don’t blame the numbing cream alone. “It is not common to have breakouts after the application of numbing cream, even though they do tend to be in a petrolatum base,” Dr. Lamb says. If you are concerned about [clogged pores](https://aedit.com/aedition/at-home-treatments-for-clogged-pores), just make sure the area is properly cleansed — it’s likely your provider has already taken care of this. 

Speaking of providers, it’s important to find someone who is highly skilled and trained in the procedure you are interested in. “I think some of what people are attributing to numbing cream breakouts is really post-procedure complications or a side effect from the procedure itself and physicians or spas don't know how to get ahead of this known, common, and expected post-op reaction," Dr. Lamb explains. 
 
If you continuously experience irritation or breakouts after a treatment, [talk to your dermatologist](https://broadway.aeditor.com/aedition/skin-care-questions-for-your-dermatologist) about your skin. “Chances are,” Dr. Paviol says, “any breakouts are from the stress reaction from the procedure itself and are short-lived and self-limited.”

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) [reports](https://www.aad.org/media/stats-numbers) that some 50 million Americans from adolescence through adulthood deal with breakouts every year. Anyone who has experienced [acne](https://aedit.com/concern/acne) knows that not all pimples are created equal, and it can be difficult to know exactly what subtype of the condition you are dealing with. For instance, is your acne bacterial or fungal in nature? Since [treatment protocols](https://aedit.com/procedure/acne-solutions) differ by type, we’re breaking down everything you need to know about the difference between the two.

## **What Is Fungal Acne?**
More often than not, conversations about acne are focused on [acne vulgaris](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-hormonal-acne-body-acne-cystic-acne-whiteheads-blackheads), which involves the blockage and/or inflammation of the hair follicles and sebaceous glands. “Traditional acne is often associated with cutibacterium acnes and is often related to other factors as well including increased oil production, clogged pores, and inflammation,” explains [Marisa Garshick, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/marisa-garshick-md-313), a board certified dermatologist in New York City. “In some cases, it can also result from [hormonal changes](https://aedit.com/aedition/skincare-during-menstrual-cycle).”

But not all acne patients are diagnosed with acne vulgaris. Fungal acne is another subtype. Also known as pityrosporum folliculitis or malassezia folliculitis, fungal acne specifically impacts the hair follicle. “Pityrosporum folliculitis is due to the overgrowth of a normal yeast that lives on the skin, known as malassezia, that can lead to inflammation of the hair follicle,” Dr. Garshick says. 

It should be noted that the yeast responsible for fungal acne is always present on your skin, says [Snehal Amin, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/snehal-amin-md-308), a board certified dermatologist in NYC. Under normal circumstances, the body is usually able to balance the yeast, but overgrowth can occur leading to the acne-like symptoms. “These breakouts are often triggered by low immunity, [high sugar levels](https://aedit.com/aedition/relationship-between-food-and-acne-breakouts), or recent antibiotic treatment,” he explains. “Long-term steroid use can also cause fungal acne.” Warm, humid environments and trapped moisture can both disrupt the balance of bacteria and fungi on the skin.

## **How to Diagnose Fungal Acne** 
Acne vulgaris presents as non-inflammatory lesions (comedonal whiteheads and blackheads), inflammatory lesions (papules, pustules, cysts, and nodules), or a mixture of both. In the majority of cases, it is most commonly found on the face, back, and chest. While it’s easy to confuse the two, there are some key differences to keep an eye out for when it comes to identifying fungal acne:

- **Type of Breakout**: Fungal acne is generally characterized by small, pus-filled whiteheads or pimples that present in clusters on the skin. 
- **Size of Bumps**: Unlike bacterial breakouts, the bumps tend to be similarly sized.
- **Areas Affected**: Fungal acne is most commonly found on the back, arms, and chest, though it may also present on the face.
- **How It Feels**: While bacterial acne can be painful, fungal acne is often itchy. 

Dermatologists diagnose fungal acne by studying the area(s) of concern. “While the diagnosis may be made clinically during a routine dermatology examination, sometimes a scraping, biopsy, or culture may be taken to confirm the diagnosis,” Dr. Garshick says. Fungal acne does not usually respond to [traditional acne treatments](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-prevent-body-acne), so sharing a list of products or remedies you have previously tried to treat the bumps with may help your doctor hone in on the cause. 

## **How to Treat Fungal Acne**
While your typical acne-fighting arsenal may not be as effective in clearing up fungal breakouts, there are still a wide-range of at-home and in-office solutions available. ### **1. Topical Skincare**
In place of the [retinoids](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-vitamin-a-retinol-retinoids-in-skincare), [salicylic acid](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-beta-hydroxy-acids-salicylic-acid-in-skincare), and [benzoyl peroxide](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-benzoyl-peroxide-in-skincare) used to treat bacterial breakouts, skincare routines for fungal acne usually involve antifungal ingredients such as ketoconazole or selenium sulfide. Creams, gels, and even medicated shampoos featuring the actives can all have a clarifying effect, Dr. Garshick notes.

### **2. Oral Medication**
In cases where topical treatments aren’t enough, oral antifungal medication may be necessary. These medications work by either preventing the fungus cells from growing or by killing the fungus that is already present. Your dermatologist will be able to prescribe these treatments as needed, in addition to developing a more holistic plan to prevent future fungal breakouts. 

### **3. Cortisone Injections**
“There is no overnight cure for acne,” Dr. Amin laments. But that’s not to say your dermatologist can’t help you out in a pinch.     I first noticed bumps on my shoulders and back and didn’t pay much attention to them because they weren’t too expansive. I was also advised to use a specialist shampoo because I was experiencing an itchy scalp and had patches on my upper neck. My dermatologist then prescribed an antifungal medication that I took for a short while, and that’s what finally started working.     My number one piece of advice — understandably, given my experience with it — would be to go to a dermatologist. Although the breakouts I had weren’t super visible, they affected my self-confidence very negatively, and trying all these supposed solutions but not getting any results was so demoralizing. There’s absolutely a psychological aspect to recovering from acne and regaining self-confidence takes time. In the same token, though, I don’t think people should feel the need to hide away simply because of clogged pores. That’s all it is. There shouldn’t be as much stigma about it, and that’s the message that I think is important to share.
