We’ve all heard about the injectable weight loss solution, but what exactly do these medications entail? Glucagon-like peptide-1 inhibitors are injectable medications administered into subcutaneous (fat) tissue to alter blood glucose, change insulin secretion, slow gastric emptying, and increase satiety for weight management and also blood sugar control. Clinical trials have consistently shown reduced body mass index when compared to placebo.
Wegovy (by Novo Nordisk) is food and drug administration approved to treat patients with BMI measurements in the overweight or obesity category. Wegovy is not indicated for use in type 2 diabetes.
The GLP-1 receptor agonist semaglutide branded as Ozempic is used for the management of type 2 diabetes.
