What is Wegovy?

We’ve all heard about the injectable weight loss solution, but what exactly do these medications entail? Glucagon-like peptide-1 inhibitors are injectable medications administered into subcutaneous (fat) tissue to alter blood glucose, change insulin secretion, slow gastric emptying, and increase satiety for weight management and also blood sugar control. Clinical trials have consistently shown reduced body mass index when compared to placebo.

Wegovy (by Novo Nordisk) is food and drug administration approved to treat patients with BMI measurements in the overweight or obesity category. Wegovy is not indicated for use in type 2 diabetes.

The GLP-1 receptor agonist semaglutide branded as Ozempic is used for the management of type 2 diabetes.

What cosmetic/health concerns does Wegovy address?

Who is the ideal candidate for Wegovy?

The ideal candidate for Wegovy is overweight with a BMI greater than 28 plus one other qualifying health condition or is obese with a BMI over 30. Those with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid tumors, other endocrine neoplasias (like Men 2), chronic kidney disease, history of allergic reaction, gallbladder problems (like gallstones) or certain cardiovascular diseases are not good candidates for Wegovy.

What are the potential side effects of Wegovy?

Wegovy side effects range from mild to severe. Mild side effects include heartburn, nausea, vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea. More serious side effects include hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), pancreatitis (an infection of the pancreas), and diabetic retinopathy complications.

What can someone expect from the results of Wegovy?

The results of Wegovy will start to become visible relatively quickly. Wegovy is taken in a step wise manner with dosage changes every four weeks. Patients can expect to begin losing weight within the first two months of use. Long term weight management may be challenging for some individuals who for any reason stop taking glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists. Wegovy is not a substitute for physical activity, a reduced calorie diet, and other healthy habits.

What is the average cost of Wegovy?

The actual cost of Wegovy will vary but generally falls between $1,000 and $3,000 per month without insurance. Medication cost is dependent on a candidate’s location and insurance.

Is it worth it?
