About the Procedure
For patients looking for ease and convenience when correcting their teeth, Smile Direct Club offers custom invisible trays delivered to your doorstep, without having monthly trips to the orthodontist. The clear aligners sent to Smile Direct Club patients are much like the custom trays of Invisalign and Simpli5 that gradually reposition the teeth into a more aesthetically pleasing smile. However, Smile Direct Club ships patients every tray to be used throughout treatment at once, eliminating the need to visit the orthodontist every few weeks for replacements. Some orthodontists advise patients to be wary of the Smile Direct program, as it is important to have a licensed and experienced dental professional overseeing any orthodontic treatment. In order to create the series of custom trays, patients will first need to send an impression of their teeth to the Smile Direct Club company. Impressions can be done using an at-home kit that is then mailed to Smile Direct Club, or can go to a Smile Direct Club SmileShop for an in-person digital scan of the teeth. Impressions will be reviewed by a dentist or orthodontist to determine candidacy for the clear aligner program. While the custom trays are manufactured, approved patients will be sent a 3D model of what their results will look like when treatment is complete. Patients will receive the entire treatment series by mail, and will replace each tray every 3-4 weeks to progressively straighten their smile. Once the program is complete, patients are advised to visit an orthodontist to review their treatment. Patients should then wear a retainer nightly to ensure that the newly aligned teeth do not migrate to their former positions.
Clear aligners from Smile Direct Club are designed to improve a number of dental imperfections such as crowding, too much space between teeth, overbite, crossbite, openbite, and overjet.
What to Expect
Smile Direct Club is a direct to consumer clear aligner system that does not require monthly visits to the orthodontist. Here is a quick guide for what to expect before, during, and after treatment with Smile Direct Club clear aligners.
- Impression made of teeth and sent to Smile Direct Club
- Advisable to visit orthodontist prior to treatment although not required
- Entire series of aligners sent to patient
- Aligners worn for 20-22 hours daily
- Patient is responsible for switching trays every 3-4 weeks
Once the clear aligners are in place, there is typically minimal irritation and discomfort beyond the first few days. No recovery time is needed.
The ideal candidates for Smile Direct Club clear aligners are those whose teeth are in good general health who wish to improve dental imperfections such as crooked, protruding, or overcrowded teeth as well as other malocclusions including mild overbites, underbites, open bites, crossbites and overjets.
Not Recommended For
Clear aligners are not recommended for children as their mouths are still growing and are usually not dedicated enough to finish the program. Patients with severe orthodontic issues are not candidates because the jaw needs to be shifted.
Side effects of clear aligners may include minor speech impediments or hindrance to proper and comfortable speech. Patients may also experience bad breath, excessive saliva, or dry mouth.
