Allow us to introduce you to zinc oxide. The soothing mineral provides broad spectrum blocking of the sun’s rays and is gentle enough for sensitive skin – hey, it’s safe enough for babies to wear! 

With that said, it’s hard to believe zinc oxide can do even more good, right? Well, apart from working as an antioxidant, it also offers anti-inflammatory benefits for [acne-prone skin](https://aedit.com/aedition/difference-between-oily-and-acne-prone-skin) and helps other ingredients in your skincare and wellness routine shine. The AEDITION spoke with skincare experts to learn more about the benefits of zinc oxide and how to incorporate it into your regimen. 

## **What Is Zinc Oxide?** 
In simplest terms, zinc oxide is a white, powdery mineral that is used in a wide range of skincare, cosmetics, and personal care products, including sun protection, makeup, bath soaps, and more. “Zinc oxide is a naturally occurring white mineral found in zincite,” says Joshua Ross, a celebrity aesthetician for [Sonage](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fsonage.com%2F) and founder of [SkinLab](https://skinlabusa.com/) in Los Angeles. “This mineral can be combined with other ingredients to give it a tint that matches natural skin tones.”

Providing the broadest spectrum UVA and UVB protection (the former causes sun damage, while the latter leads to sunburns), zinc oxide is [approved](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/understanding-over-counter-medicines/sunscreen-how-help-protect-your-skin-sun) by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use as an active ingredient in sunscreen. For that reason alone, it should be a mainstay in any skincare regimen, but it actually does even more for the skin. “Besides supporting skin healing for decades, zinc oxide today is a common active ingredient found in physical sunscreens, diaper rash creams, calamine lotions, etc.,” explains [Amy Spizuoco, DO](https://aedit.com/provider/amy-spizuoco-19341), a board certified dermatologist and founder of True Dermatology in New York City. “Zinc oxide is most commonly added to topical solutions such as moisturizers, sunscreens, and makeup products like foundations.” 

## **The Benefits of Zinc Oxide in Sun Care & Skincare**

Where do we begin? Ross explains that, “in addition to sun protection, zinc has benefits including reducing [inflammation](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-inflammaging), soothing, and promotes healing for [scars and wounds](https://aedit.com/concern/scars), and can help keep conditions like [eczema and psoriasis](https://aedit.com/aedition/comparing-eczema-vs-psoriasis) under control.” It also supports the skin barrier. “Additionally, the barrier formed by zinc oxide on the skin also helps to reduce transepidermal water loss, or TEWL, contributing to long-lasting moisturization,” notes Harry Fallick, MD, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon and founder of [CoTZ](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fcotzskincare.com%2F). One notable misconception about the mineral: That it clogs pores. “The particles are too large to penetrate the pore, so they sit on top of the pore acting as skin protection and barrier which can keep pollutants out of the skin,” Ross adds.

In sun care, zinc oxide is one of two physical blockers (alongside titanium dioxide) that can be used in sunscreen. “Zinc oxide works by ultimately refracting and reflecting UV rays away from the skin,” Dr. Fallick explains. “It does not absorb into the skin or the bloodstream and is very gentle, making it perfect for sensitive skin, children, or [post-procedure](https://aedit.com/aedition/post-procedure-skincare-makeup-product-guide) use.” This hopefully doesn’t need repeating, but sun protection is not just for aesthetic benefits. “Not having significant sun protection can lead to [sunburn](https://aedit.com/aedition/dermatologist-tips-for-soothing-sunburn),” Dr. Spizuoco warns. “Having five or more sunburns doubles your risk for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.” 

Adequate sun protection is the best defense against all types of [skin cancer](https://aedit.com/aedition/skin-cancer-facts). “This is why I wanted to create a product that is accessible and easy to use, two of my colleagues had skin cancers removed and application, as well as reapplication, is incredibly important when it comes to sunblock,” explains Samantha Brett, the founder of Australian suncare brand [Naked Sundays](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fnakedsundays.com%2F). She acknowledges that, in the past, sunblocks with zinc oxide have gotten a bad rap for being thick, difficult to rub in, and leaving a white-cast on the skin. Fortunately, product formulations have come a long way and mineral sunscreens can now have a virtually translucent finish. 

### **The Benefits of Zinc in Food**
This article is about the benefits of topical zinc oxide, but we’d be remiss not to mention the role it plays in diet and nutrition. [Zinc](https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Zinc-HealthProfessional/#en2) is not naturally produced by the body, but it is an essential mineral for many bodily functions. It fortifies the immune system, aids in brain development and memory, and prevents cellular damage (to name a few). Recent [studies](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25200490/#:~:text=Zinc%20in%20human%20plays%20an,decreased%20generation%20of%20inflammatory%20cytokines.) have found that it can also help alleviate the oxidative stress that leads to certain chronic diseases – especially ones that crop up with age. Foods such as chickpeas, red meat, shellfish, and cashews are good sources of zinc. If you are not getting enough zinc through your diet, supplementation may be an option.

## **The Best Candidates for Zinc Oxide** 
Due to zinc oxide’s soothing properties, anti-inflammatory benefits, and versatility, everyone is a candidate for a zinc-powered product – though the type of product you use will depend on your skin type. Those with acne-related concerns may be using a topical with zinc oxide, as per their dermatologist’s recommendations. And if you have some calming products in your over-the-counter skincare routine, there is a good chance zinc oxide is making an appearance.

There is no excuse not to wear sunscreen every single day, no matter the weather, but those with acne or other [skin sensitivities](https://aedit.com/aedition/difference-between-sensitive-vs-sensitized-skin) may be wary of adding any potential irritants to their complexion. Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are widely considered to be the gentlest and safest sun care products. “Zinc oxide does not cause any severe side effects, and cases of allergic reactions due to zinc oxide are rare,” Dr. Spizuoco shares. She does, however, advise women who are [pregnant or breastfeeding](https://aedit.com/aedition/skincare-ingredients-to-avoid-during-pregnancy-breastfeeding) to consult with their doctor before introducing new products to their routine.

## **How to Find the Right Zinc Oxide Product** 
At this point, you hopefully realize that you’re not only going to see zinc oxide listed on sunscreen tubes. If you have acne or other inflammatory skin conditions or are simply looking for a calming addition to your skincare routine, there is a case to be made for the mineral. Here’s what to look for:

### **Sun Care**
When it comes to zinc oxide in sunscreen, Ross recommends finding a product with no less than 10 percent. “This is regardless of SPF claims – be it  20, 30, or 40,” he says. “We know that 10 percent zinc will provide the needed protection to block out UVA, as well as UVB rays.” The exception to this 10 percent rule is formulas that pair zinc oxide with other actives that enhance its efficacy. CoTZ sunscreens, for example, combine zinc oxide and titanium dioxide because “you can achieve a higher SPF with a lower total percentage of total active ingredients than with zinc oxide alone, while still achieving good UVA coverage,” Dr. Fallick explains. This is because “zinc oxide both complements titanium dioxide’s protective abilities and extends photoprotection to the skin where titanium dioxide is insufficient,” he adds.

- **Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)**: The most common form of skin cancer with about 3.6 million cases in the U.S. every year, BCC usually develops after years of sun exposure.
- **Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)**: Ranking as the second most common skin cancer with nearly two million cases diagnosed annually, SCC can grow deep into the skin and cause disfigurement.
- **Melanoma**: The most dangerous form of skin cancer due to its ability to spread, the Skin Cancer Foundation [estimates](https://www.skincancer.org/skin-cancer-information/skin-cancer-facts/) there will be 197,700 cases diagnosed in 2022.

If you commit to regular skin checks with your dermatologist and practice safe sun, however, skin cancer is very treatable. ## **2. Skin Cancer Is Common – But Preventable**
One in five Americans will develop some sort of skin cancer during their lifetime, making it the [most common](https://www.aad.org/media/stats-skin-cancer) form of cancer in the U.S. But even the sobering statistics don’t tell the whole story. According to the American Cancer Society, the [actual number](https://www.cancer.org/content/dam/cancer-org/research/cancer-facts-and-statistics/annual-cancer-facts-and-figures/2020/cancer-facts-and-figures-2020.pdf) of non-melanoma basal cell and squamous cell (i.e. the two most common types of skin cancer) cases are difficult to estimate because they are not required to be reported to cancer registries. Invasive melanoma, meanwhile, only accounts for about one percent of skin cancer cases, but it is responsible for the majority of skin cancer deaths. 

It is estimated that some 10,000 people are diagnosed with skin cancer every day, with more than one million Americans living with melanoma at any given time. If there is any good news to be had, it is this: Skin cancer is the most preventable form of cancer. Unlike cancers that have ambiguous origins or can’t be seen, we know exactly where skin cancer comes from: exposure to UV rays from the sun and artificial sources (read: tanning beds). 

You can play an active role in skin cancer prevention and protection with healthy habits. They include: 

- Monthly at-home skin checks (more on that below)
- Daily use of a broad spectrum sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30 
- Reapplication of said sunscreen every two hours or immediately after swimming
- Staying in the shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Wearing a wide-brim hat, polarized sunglasses, and UPF clothing
- Avoiding indoor tanning

## **3. No One Is Immune From Skin Cancer**
There is a dangerous misconception that [skin of color](https://aedit.com/aedition/bipoc-skin-cancer-awareness) doesn’t burn or can’t develop skin cancer. It is true that people with lighter skin — types I through III on the [Fitzpatrick scale](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-fitzpatrick-skin-types) — are at a higher risk of developing skin cancer than types IV, V, and VI. But people with darker skin have a higher risk of being diagnosed with skin cancer at a later stage. This means the cancer is often more aggressive and has a lower survival rate.

The most common form of skin cancer for BIPOCs is basal cell carcinoma, specifically on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Melanoma most often affects non-Hispanic whites, but people of color have higher rates of acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM), or melanoma of the palms, soles, and nail beds. 

And then there is the age factor. While rare, pediatric melanoma should be on every parent’s radar. According to the National Cancer Institute, nearly 500 children are [diagnosed](https://www.cancer.gov/types/skin/hp/child-melanoma-treatment-pdq) with pediatric melanoma each year. This is why it is so important for *everyone* to apply sunscreen properly and to conduct skin checks regularly.

## **4. Skin Cancer Can Develop Anywhere**
The skin is the body’s largest organ, and there is a lot of it. Skin cancer can develop anywhere, so you should be protecting and checking from the top of your head to the tips of your toes – though certain parts of the body are more overlooked than others. These include the fingers and toes (including under the nails) and the bottoms of the feet. The eyelids, scalp, and genital area are also easy to forget. Last but not least, don’t neglect your lips. Whether you realize it or not, they are part of your skin — a very sensitive one at that – and need protection. ## **5. Skin Cancer Screenings Save Lives**
All forms of skin cancer are treatable, but early detection is key. The five-year survival rate for melanoma is 99 percent, which is why committing to regular skin cancer screenings – both at-home and with your dermatologist – is vital. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), half of reported melanomas are [self-detected](https://www.aad.org/media/stats-skin-cancer). Just like you do a monthly [self breast examination](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-to-do-if-you-find-a-lump-in-your-breast-breast-cancer-awareness), skin checks should be a part of your routine, too. 

As you know, skin cancer can develop anywhere on the body, so you have to be thorough in your exam. As it relates to melanoma specifically, the ‘ABCDE rule’ should be considered. The ABCDEs include:

- A – Asymmetry: Growth is asymmetrical
- B – Border: Rough or jagged edges
- C – Color: Various shades of brown, tan, black, red, white, or blue
- D – Diameter: Larger than six millimeters (think: a pencil eraser)
- E – Evolving: Changing, growing, bleeding, etc.

BCC and SCC do not necessarily follow the same pattern, but, generally speaking, you want to be mindful of spots that are growing asymmetrically, evolve in size or color, or suddenly start bleeding, itching, or burning. At the end of the day, self-exams are all about monitoring the skin for changes — whether it’s the evolution of an existing mark or the advent of a new one.

At-home skin checks are a must, but they do not replace a [professional skin cancer screening](https://aedit.com/aedition/dermatologist-skin-cancer-screenings-mole-checks) with a dermatologist. It's usually recommended to start these checks annually around the time you turn 18, though, depending on you and your family's medical history, more frequent visits may be needed. Consulting with a board certified dermatologist is the best way to determine the ideal cadence.

## **6. Sun Damage Is Cumulative**
Having five or more sunburns doubles your risk of developing melanoma, but skin cancer can form from repeated sun exposure over time regardless of if there’s a [sunburn](https://aedit.com/aedition/dermatologist-tips-for-soothing-sunburn) or not. We’re sorry to tell you that the sun damage we see in adulthood is the result of years of damage – often, the cumulative sun exposure we experienced before age 18. That chronic exposure to UV rays can lead to visible signs of aging (i.e. unwanted pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, crepiness, etc.), skin cancers, and potentially problematic pre-cancers.

[Actinic keratoses](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-actinic-keratosis) (also known as solar keratoses) are the most common pre-cancers. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 58 million Americans have one or more AK and five to 10 percent of those spots become cancerous. They present as scaly patches on the skin – most commonly on the face, lips, ears, neck, scalp, and hands – and are the direct result of UV damage. If left untreated, they can turn into squamous cell carcinoma. Dermatologists can freeze off actinic keratoses with liquid nitrogen. Alternatively, topical chemotherapy or anti-inflammatory agents may be prescribed. We’ve said it several times before, and we’ll say it again: The best way to prevent skin cancer is to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. One of the easiest ways to do that is to apply sunscreen every single day (rain or shine) and reapply regularly. While any sunscreen is better than no sunscreen, the AAD recommends using a broad spectrum sunscreen with a minimum sun protection factor (SPF) of 30. ‘Broad spectrum’ means the formula provides protection against both UVA and UVB rays. The former cause sun damage, while the latter are responsible for sunburns.

While that may have once sent a shiver down your spine at the thought of grease-induced breakouts and an ashy complexion, [today’s sunscreen formulas](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-sunscreens-of-2021) make you forget you’re wearing it to begin with. In fact, some of the most advanced tinted and pigmented versions provide ample coverage that will make you want to swear off wearing regular ol’ foundation and makeup during the day forever. Here’s what you need to know.
 
## **Here Comes the Sun(screen)**
It’s a well-known fact that [sunscreen](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-apply-sunscreen-and-not-miss-a-spot) is a necessary component of any and every skincare routine. However, when it comes to sunscreens that double as makeup and makeup that contains sunscreen, the differentiating factor is that proper ‘makeup’ also contains pigments and other ingredients, says [Angela Lamb, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/angela-lamb-md-34643), a board certified dermatologist in New York City. 
 
Sure, wearing makeup with sunscreen is better than not wearing any sunscreen, but these products are not typically as protective as traditional sunscreen. Makeup with sunscreen tends to have a lower SPF than traditional sunscreen, says [Dendy Engelman, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/dendy-engelman-md-312), a board certified dermatologist in NYC. “Because of these differences, you would have to layer on more of the SPF-infused makeup to achieve the same amount of protection as a standard (quarter-sized) amount of traditional sunscreen on the face,” she shares. For this reason alone, Dr. Engelman recommends first applying a traditional sunscreen — with a minimum of broad spectrum SPF 30 — followed by SPF-infused makeup on top for additional protection.
 
But [layering sunscreen under makeup](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-apply-layer-skincare-products) isn’t always as simple as it sounds. Some formulas can pill on the skin, whereas others leave a whitecast behind. Still, a lot of women don’t like the feeling of sunscreen under their makeup, and, in that instance, SPF-infused makeup is the next best thing. Some of today’s most innovative sunscreens formulations offer sun protection while concealing spots and discoloration, adding a wash of color to the cheeks or lids, or even a pop on the lips. 
 
To ensure you are appropriately protected, Dr. Lamb says to use a product with at least an SPF of 30 unless you truly spend your entire day out of the sun or nowhere near a window. “In those instances, SPF 15 will likely do,” she says. Remember, clinical sunscreen testing uses two tablespoons. On the other hand, makeup isn’t tested, nor is two tablespoons worth usually worn daily. For the record, two tablespoons of liquid makeup would equate to approximately 10 layers or more of the product; creams and powders are harder to quantify.

And how do you navigate mid-day reapplication because, let’s face it, almost no woman can go an entire day without a swipe of lip color or a dusting of powder across the nose? Try a powder or cream compact with sunscreen — you can pat it into the skin using a [makeup brush](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-choose-a-makeup-brush) — or buildable lip color to keep what’s already on the face in place without smearing or blurring.

## **What Is Visible Light?**
In order to fully understand the benefits of iron oxide in skincare, you first need to have a good grasp of visible light. UV radiation and visible light are both part of the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum.  Visible light refers to the portion of the EM spectrum that the human eye can see. Yes, that includes [blue light](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-blue-light-damage). “Blue light is a band that falls within visible light, and it is emitted by electronic devices like phone and computer screens,” explains [Brendan Camp, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/brendan-camp-md-34645), a board certified dermatologist in New York City.

Like UV rays, visible light is emitted by the sun but also by artificial sources (think: lightbulbs, electronics, etc.). While visible light is not known to be a direct [skin cancer risk](https://aedit.com/aedition/dermatologist-skin-cancer-screenings-mole-checks), it can cause skin damage and contribute to pigmentation conditions. As for blue light specifically, “it is thought that upon its penetration in the skin, [it] may contribute to [unwanted pigmentation](https://aedit.com/concern/uneven-skin-tone),” Dr. Camp adds.

## **What Are Iron Oxides?**
Iron oxides are cosmetic pigments that are derived from naturally occuring mineral deposits. There are red iron oxides, yellow iron oxides, and black iron oxides, which can be blended to color foundations, concealers, face powders, lipsticks, eye shadows, and more. They are also often used to add the ‘tint’ to tinted sunscreen formulas. 

A quick refresher on UV protection. UV radiation includes UVA, UVB, and UVC rays. If you think of your [sunscreen](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-apply-sunscreen-and-not-miss-a-spot), it likely offers broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection. That’s because the former is primarily responsible for [premature signs of aging](https://aedit.com/aedition/cosmetic-procedures-treatments-to-correct-sun-damage) and the latter causes [sunburn](https://aedit.com/aedition/dermatologist-tips-for-soothing-sunburn) (UVC rays are largely absorbed by the ozone layer and do not reach the skin). “Most sunscreens contain ingredients that protect the skin from ultraviolet radiation that is emitted from the sun,” Dr. Camp says. “Many sunscreens, however, do not provide protection from visible light.”

When you consider that it’s basically impossible to escape visible light exposure, the case for protecting your skin is strong. “Visible light is emitted from the sun as well as indoor lighting and electronic devices, and it may contribute to the formation of pigmentation in [melasma](https://aedit.com/concern/melasma) or [post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-acne-induced-post-inflammatory-hyperpigmentation),” Dr. Camp explains. “Iron oxide reflects visible light, and its inclusion in skincare products may help mitigate these conditions.”

In fact, a [recent study](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/jocd.13803) in the *Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology* found that sunscreens formulated with iron oxides — especially when combined with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide — offer enhanced protection against blue light. “People who want sunscreen to be sheer or invisible on their skin may want to use a product without iron oxides,” Dr. Camp says. “Yet those who like physical sunscreens, like zinc or titanium, but are not fans of the white shadow it can leave on the skin, may find that using a tinted formula makes it more cosmetically acceptable.”

By and large, iron oxides are considered to be well-tolerated by most skin types. There have been a couple of [reported allergic reactions](https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/tinted-sunscreens-benefits-beyond-an-attractive-glow-2020071320534) to the ingredient when it is included in mascara formulas. Aloe vera is a natural skincare ingredient that’s loved by plant-based [skinimalists](https://aedit.com/aedition/skinimalism-skincare-trend) and 10-step routine lovers alike. The soothing gel is also an Instagram-favorite. But while many of us are familiar with the plant by name and sight, the science behind why aloe vera is a skincare darling has been relatively unknown — until now. Here, three skincare experts talk to The AEDITION about what you need to know about the benefits of aloe vera for the skin.

## **What Is Aloe Vera?**
Derived from the cactus-like plant also simply called aloe, aloe vera grows in hot, dry climates around the globe. The spiky succulent is believed to have [originated](https://www.cabi.org/isc/datasheet/4192) from the Arabian peninsula, but it’s now naturally found in areas like Morocco, Egypt, and Sudan. It’s also cultivated in arid regions of Australia and the southern border of the United States.

Aloe vera refers to both the aloe vera plant and the gel that comes from its leaves. The “innermost part of the leaf is a clear, soft, moist, and slippery tissue that consists of large, thin-walled cells that hold water in a form of a viscous mucilage,” explains Krupa Koestline, clean cosmetic chemist and founder of [KKT Consultants](https://www.kktconsultants.com/portfolio). “The plant cell walls contain carbohydrates like cellulose and hemicellulose.”

Basically, those leaves contain a high percentage of water and a rich variety of biologically active compounds that include vitamins, minerals, sugars, saponins, and amino acids, says Laura Arce, co-owner, founding member, and director of product research and development at [Thrive Natural Care](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fthrivecare.co%2F). 

The true wonder of the plant is how all of these pieces come together. “Most of the medicinal effects of aloe leaf extracts are attributed to the polysaccharides found in the inner leaf tissue,” Koestline notes. “It’s believed that a lot of these biological activities are due to the synergistic actions of the compounds contained [in the leaf] instead of just one single chemical substance.”

## **The Benefits of Aloe Vera in Skincare**
Historically, aloe vera was used in ancient Greece, Egypt, India, and China for its skin and health benefits. Egyptian queens Nefertiti and Cleopatra [reportedly](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2763764/) used it as part of their beauty regimens, and it was also believed to improve baldness, promote healing of wounds and [burns](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-first-second-third-degree-burns), and soothe rashes and [acne](https://aedit.com/concern/acne).

To this day, we think about aloe in much of the same way. When applied topically on the skin, it has a vast array of benefits that include:

- Providing deep hydration
- Preventing transepidermal water loss 
- Reducing the appearance of dark spots 
- Soothing irritation caused by rashes, acne, and burns

“The most popular benefit of aloe vera is that it soothes inflammation,” says Shuting Hu, PhD, a cosmetic chemist and co-founder of [Acaderma](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Facaderma.com%2F). “If you are familiar with aloe vera, it is likely that you have used it to help [soothe a sunburn](https://aedit.com/aedition/dermatologist-tips-for-soothing-sunburn).”

## **The Best Candidates for Aloe Vera**
One of the reasons why aloe vera is such a beloved ingredient is because it works on most, if not all, skin types. It’s particularly beneficial for those with [easily irritated](https://aedit.com/aedition/difference-between-sensitive-vs-sensitized-skin) or [dry skin](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-prevent-dry-skin-face-body-hands). “Aloe vera is great for anyone to use,” Dr. Hu says. “I would recommend anyone with dry, irritated, or sensitive skin use aloe vera, as the ingredient that will help to calm inflammation and replenish moisture levels to rehydrate the skin.”

As with virtually any topical ingredient (even the gentlest), sensitivity is possible. “If you do experience any irritation, redness, sensitivity, or rashes when using aloe vera, stop using the product as it may be due to an allergic reaction,” Dr. Hu cautions.

## **Finding the Right Aloe Vera Product**
First things first: Do you want to use aloe just straight from the plant? Or would you prefer a version of the gel that’s been pre-packaged? The good news is there’s no right or wrong answer here. It is safe to use aloe in its raw state, but it can also be professionally formulated. It all comes down to your personal preference and lifestyle. 

Another decision to make is whether you’d like to use the ingredient alone or in conjunction with other actives. Again, you can’t really go wrong. “Aloe vera is a great ingredient to include in skincare products, but it is powerful enough that it can be used on its own,” Dr. Hu says. “Aloe vera is an easy product to use on its own, but, if there is a product that features the ingredient, it is nice that you get a few of the extra added benefits.”

If you do decide to pick up an aloe vera plant, you’ll need to make sure the plant gets enough sunlight. Water it no more than once a week. Once every other week may even be sufficient. When in doubt, less is more. It is, after all, used to being in dry environments! Last but not least, watch out for insects. Regardless of what you choose, Arce says it’s important to make sure the product contains a safe, high-quality version of the ingredient. “In the case of aloe, people have used it forever on its own,” she says. “However, there are some [studies on aloin](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24042237/) — a component of non-decolorized aloe — that has been linked to cancer in rats [when ingested].” She is quick to note that “there is no link when used topically,” but “it is better to be safe and use products containing purified aloe from a brand that you trust.” When in doubt, “you can reach out to the brand to confirm they are using the safe version,” she says.

## **How to Add Aloe Vera to Your Routine**
Whether in its pure form or as an ingredient in another product, aloe vera is safe to use both A.M. and P.M., and it doesn’t increase sensitivity to the sun. If you’re using it alone, Dr. Hu says to apply sparingly. “You only need a small amount,” she emphasizes. “The product will absorb easily once it settles into the skin, and then you can follow with a moisturizer for extra hydration [if needed].”
