About David L. Brown, MD

David L. Brown, M.D. serves as a Professor in the Section of Plastic Surgery, Department of Surgery, at the University Michigan School of Medicine. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery as well as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Brown received his M.D. degree from Vanderbilt University. He underwent General Surgery Residency training at the University of Cincinnati Hospitals and completed his Plastic Surgery Fellowship training at the University of Michigan. He received additional fellowship training in Research at the Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children and in Research and Clinical Reconstructive Microsurgery at St. Vincent's Hospital and the University of Melbourne in Melbourne, Australia. He joined the faculty at the University of Michigan where he has been a full-time academic surgeon since 2001. Dr. Brown has served on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, as the President of the American Society for Peripheral Nerve, President of the Michigan Academy of Plastic Surgeons, and Parliamentarian of the Plastic Surgery Research Council. In addition, he is an active member of many other national societies including the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery and the American Council of Academic Plastic Surgeons. Dr. Brown co-authored several editions of a well-respected textbook of Plastic Surgery, The Michigan Manual of Plastic Surgery, as well as over 60 scientific journal articles and 10 book chapters. He has been an invited speaker and has presented his research and clinical work nationally and overseas.Dr. Brown specializes in several areas of reconstructive surgery, including peripheral nerve surgery and the surgical treatment of chronic pain, reconstruction of the face, breast and chest following cancer removal, reconstructive microneurovascular surgery (including lymphedema surgery), and the care of difficult wound problems. He also devotes a significant portion of time to aesthetic/cosmetic surgery of the face, breast and abdomen. He has a particular interest in the education of plastic surgeons, and has received honors and awards for his teaching.
