About Andrew N. Kornstein, MD

"Andrew N. Kornstein, M.D., plastic surgeon, is distinguished by his expert medical training, honors and extensive experience. His innate aesthetic sense provides his patients with the most natural and beautiful outcomes. He is renowned as a “super specialist” in breast reconstruction, as well as aesthetic procedures of the breast and body. He is also a national leader in the field of non-invasive facial rejuvenation. Dr. Kornstein graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Pennsylvania. He earned his degree in Biochemical Genetics and was awarded the prestigious Distinction in Biology. He received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College, where he completed The National Institute of Health Fellowship in Nuclear Medicine and Clinical Cardiology. Dr. Kornstein was selected to join the elite Residency programs at Columbia University/St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, both in General Surgery and Plastic Surgery, where he continued his Fellowship training in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and refined his aesthetic techniques. Today he serves as attending physician at Columbia University/St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Kornstein is Board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is an active member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and The Rhinoplasty Society. In his training as a general and plastic surgery Resident, at the prestigious Columbia University/St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital, Dr. Kornstein acquired exceptional training from the leading expert in fat grafting, and then helped develop the most sophisticated techniques using hand-harvested adipose derived stem cells (fat cells) from one’s own body for the treatment of aging changes of the face and body. As the recognized expert in this technique, he wrote the chapter on “Using Volume Augmentation” in the Encyclopedia of Aesthetic Rejuvenation. Dr. Kornstein is currently one of the leading experts in fat grafting to the breast and chest wall area, both as an isolated procedure and in combination with implants. In selected patients, fat grafting can augment the breasts without the need of an implant. This creates unique options for the aesthetic breast augmentation patient. When combined with an implant, fat grafting optimizes symmetry and camouflages the cosmetic signs of an implant, producing the most natural contour possible. This breakthrough technique gives breast augmentation and reconstruction patients the most natural, realistic result. Dr. Kornstein’s superior technique for Autologous Fat Grafting for Upper Eyelid Ptosis and Aging is featured in the American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery. In April of this year, he is invited to present his findings on fat grafting’s long term structural changes to the face and its influence on the nose, both with and without rhinoplasty, to The Rhinoplasty Society. Dr. Kornstein’s work in subcutaneous mastectomy breast reconstruction and revisional cosmetic augmentation is published in a paper sponsored by Life Cell Corporation, makers of Alloderm and Strattice, leaders in the use of Accellular Dermal Matrix for breast reconstruction. His paper in the Journal of Medical Case Reports emphasizes the importance of identifying patients who are high risk for post-surgical complications and recommends the construction of an “internal bra” to support the breast, reducing or eliminating implant-related complications. In addition, he has been published on the subject of Gynecomastia (male breast reduction) in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal. In addition, Dr. Kornstein participated in clinical trials for silicone breast implants during the FDA moratorium and served on advisory panels. Often called upon for his expert opinion, Allergen invited Dr. Kornstein, among a select group of surgeons, to learn about its pre-global release of SERI and asked him to study its use in controlling scarring in body contouring, particularly in brachioplasty and body lift procedures. When appropriate, Dr. Kornstein guides his patients in the ever changing world of non-invasive aesthetic enhancement. He draws on his intimate knowledge of the mechanics of facial aging and muscle compensation to create the most natural aesthetic use of Botox. He has served on the Juvederm® Advisory Panel and tested Restyane® internationally prior to release in the United States. He documented his revolutionary procedure, “Restylane Eyebrow Lifts”, in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal. He is currently one of a small number of plastic surgeons selected to test the cutting-edge filler, Voluma®.
