Pregnancy causes many changes to the body, some which reverse naturally and others that require a little extra help. If you wish to achieve your pre-baby body or sculpt and contour your new physique, a [mommy makeover](https://aedit.com/concern/mommy-makeover) may be the ultimate amalgamation of procedures to do just that.

The term ‘mommy makeover’ is a catch-all for correcting any changes to a woman's body after childbirth, says [Lauren Chmielewski, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/lauren-chmielewski-md-143), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in New York City. Yet, today's mommy makeovers are more inclusive than ever. Just as important as finding a qualified plastic surgeon who can achieve the results you're after is to understand (yourself) the ins and outs of the highly involved surgery and what the recovery entails. Although most mommy makeover patients are thrilled with the outcome, getting there is not always easy. Therefore, patients need to have realistic expectations when it comes to the steps they need to take to achieve optimal outcomes, says [Gregory Buford, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/gregory-buford-md-1015), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Lone Tree, CO. “Proper healing requires planning and attention to detail, like attentive wound care, compression, restriction of various activities, and careful attention to what you eat,” he shares.

Generally speaking, three weeks of taking it very easy is recommended, but that’s not always feasible – particularly for moms with young children. The more time you can take to recuperate, however, the better, since bleeding, breakage of internal sutures, and the opening of wounds are possible if you try to do too much too soon, cautions [Mark G. Albert, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/mark-albert-md-77), an NYC-based board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon.

There's plenty to know about a mommy makeover that all too often flies under the radar. Here are 10 things to know before getting a mommy makeover.

## **1. Numbness Can Last Months, If Not Longer**
It's not uncommon for the skin to feel numb for months (even upwards of a year) after the [tummy tuck](https://aedit.com/procedure/abdominoplasty) portion of a mommy makeover. It is a normal – albeit disconcerting – part of the overall [healing process](https://aedit.com/aedition/tummy-tuck-recovery-healing-process), and there's no need to worry about a lingering lack of feeling. It is related to trauma to the nerve endings and swelling. During an abdominoplasty, your surgeon lifts and removes excess skin to tighten the abdominal wall and muscles. “In doing this, we cut the small nerves to the skin, and it takes time for these nerves to grow back to the skin surface,” Dr. Albert says. As a result, there can be little or no feeling through the abdomen during the regrowth period. It's a waiting game as the nerves repair, reconnect, and regenerate independently.

Usually, this process takes a few months, and Dr. Albert says it is incredibly uncommon for someone to have permanent numbness after the procedure. “Any numbness generally subsides as the swelling goes away, which can take up to six to 12 months before completely returning to normal,” Dr. Chmielewski adds. However, some patients never regain 100 percent sensation, and some degree of numbness may always exist in the abdominal area. So, if you feel the urge to scratch an itch with little relief, that’s why. 

## **2. Walking – Even Around the House – Is Difficult at First**
Getting up and mindfully moving is essential in the first few days after a mommy makeover since gentle movement promotes circulation and proper blood flow. Dr. Chmielewski says walking helps lower the chance of developing a blood clot or deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after surgery. Many plastic surgeons advise purchasing a walker (do this [before surgery](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-plastic-surgery-recovery-nurses-centers-products) and have it ready to go when you get home), since mobility is somewhat limited and the extra support is helpful. 

If you find it difficult or painful to stand upright, it is due to the newly created tightness in the core. Any discomfort is temporary. Some surgeons instruct their patients to walk hunched over with the help of a cane to prevent [unnecessary strain](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-reduce-tension-scarring-after-cosmetic-surgery) on the stomach incisions, which can force them open. But not every surgeon takes this approach nor agrees with it. “I find this unnecessary and believe it creates more back pain than one would have from the procedure alone,” Dr. Albert shares. “Therefore, I encourage my patients to sit and stand upright and be up and walking the day of the procedure.”

To make sure you keep moving, you’ll want to create a simple walking schedule and have a family member, friend, or partner make sure you stick to it. “Walking for 10 minutes every two hours while awake is a great way to ensure you’re getting enough movement in,” Dr. Chmielewski shares. As for when your movement will feel less encumbered, Dr. Buford says patients usually walk fully upright by week two or three.

## **3. The Shape & Position of the Breasts Will Evolve**
If you opt for [breast implants](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-with-implants) to correct deflation, decreased volume, or droopiness, don’t freak out if you don’t like how your new breasts look the first time you see them. Your first impression will not be your last. The breast implants usually sit very high on the chest [following a breast augmentation](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-with-implants). To help the implants settle into place, Dr. Buford recommends his patients wear a breast band and perform breast implant massages. This settling process (sometimes called ‘drop and fluff’) generally resolves over the coming months. 

It's also normal for the breasts to feel tight and swollen initially. But as the tissue stretches and relaxes and the implants soften up and descend the chest over the next few months, they begin to take their final shape and become more symmetrical and natural looking. “This is a completely normal part of breast augmentation with or without a breast lift,” Dr. Albert says.

## **4. An Electric Recliner Will Make Standing Up & Sitting Down Easier**
Post-mommy makeover, patients may find it cumbersome to get in and out of bed or a chair. That's why some plastic surgeons recommend recovering in an electric recliner, which makes sitting and standing much easier on the body. [Resting in a reclining position](https://aedit.com/aedition/sleeping-better-after-cosmetic-surgery-aesthetic-procedures) (you can sleep in one at night, too) helps take the pressure and strain off the abdominal wall, which is important since unnecessary stress or a pulling feeling can cause an incision to open.

If you don't have a recliner, you may want to purchase one or borrow one from a friend or family member. If an electric recliner is out of the question, consider using a wedge pillow for additional back support when sleeping or resting and use a small pad or lumbar support under the knees for extra support. ## **5. Your Plastic Surgeon Can Remove an Existing C-Section Scar**
If you delivered your baby via c-section, it's okay to have a mommy makeover once your doctor deems you ready for surgery. However, one of the most commonly asked questions among c-section patients is if a secondary scar is necessary. In most cases, creating a tummy tuck incision below an [existing c-section scar](https://aedit.com/aedition/invasive-non-invasive-procedures-to-fix-appearance-of-c-section-scar) (they're shorter and smaller than abdominoplasty scars) removes the original one. “Many patients have existing scars from previous procedures on the abdomen,” Dr. Chmielewski says. “So, depending on the operation, it is usually possible to have a tummy tuck and use these scars.”

There are some instances where you may not be able to trade a c-section scar for the [hip-to-hip tummy tuck scar](https://aedit.com/aedition/scarring-after-body-plastic-surgery), like if the c-section scar is too low. “When this is the case, it may not be possible to have the abdominoplasty scar placed below the C-section scar,” says [Adam Schaffner, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/adam-schaffner-md-33), a double board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon in NYC. 

## **6. A Compression Garment Will Be Your New Favorite Accessory**
When you wake from surgery, you'll be wearing a tight-fitting [compression garment](https://aedit.com/aedition/benefits-of-compression-garments-after-cosmetic-surgery) in at least one area. Although it is uncomfortable, it helps limit swelling in the abdominal area and promotes healthy healing. Dr. Buford calls compression “a necessary evil,” adding that “it can mean the difference between an amazing result and a ho-hum outcome.” He also says that compression enhances local lymphatic drainage and reduces the risk of fluid collections ([seromas](https://aedit.com/aedition/risk-of-seroma-after-cosmetic-surgery)) beneath the skin.

Dr. Albert says that patients know that any compression will stop as soon as they remove the garment, and they will get swollen again. “Typically, patients use the compression garment I give them in the OR for about a week and then switch to a tighter compression garment as the swelling subsides,” he notes. Every plastic surgeon has their recommendation for the length of time that patients should wear compression garments, and most stay in one for at least the first six weeks post-procedure. Throughout that process, you can size down as [swelling](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-minimize-swelling-after-cosmetic-surgery) resolves to retain some degree of compression until you reach your final shape and size. If you do not wear a compression garment or have a manual [lymphatic drainage massage](https://aedit.com/aedition/benefits-of-lymphatic-drainage-massages-after-cosmetic-surgery) performed, it may lead to prolonged swelling.

## **7. Make Sure You Are Done Having Children**
While there is nothing stopping you from getting pregnant again after a mommy makeover, it certainly will [impact the results](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-pregnancy-affects-cosmetic-surgery-results). “The idea is to make your stomach as flat as possible and the skin as tight as possible, which can stretch again if one has another child,” Dr. Albert says. Dr. Chmielewski agrees and usually advises her patients to wait until they are finished having children to proceed with a mommy makeover. “Cosmetic surgery is an investment, and patients should be at or close to their goal weight for the results to be long-lasting and achieve the best results possible,” she says.

Moreover, getting pregnant following a mommy makeover may have implications on the way the body responds to pregnancy. “If a tummy tuck is performed in which the rectus muscles are tightened (plicated), a woman will likely feel a tighter sensation than prior pregnancies,” Dr. Schaffner says. “There is the theoretical risk of restricting the growth of the fetus.”

## **8. You’ll Need a Laxative (or two) to Get Things Moving Again**
A mommy makeover requires [anesthesia](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-anesthesia), and the trade-off for comfort during surgery is constipation in the days following it. For this reason, a laxative is a must for your post-recovery shopping list. Any over-the-counter laxative will do, but, if you’re taking one that you have never used before, it’s best to test it three to five days before your surgery to make sure your body responds well. This way, you can get an idea of how fast-acting it is and any potential side effects. Another way to ensure a smooth transition following surgery is to eat plenty of fiber-rich foods while recovering, which always helps make the bowel movement process a little easier.

## **9. Pay Attention to Your Diet During Recovery**
You are what you eat, especially when in recovery mode. The food you consume while at home recouping from a mommy makeover should be fiber-rich and anti-inflammatory to promote healing. Dr. Buford says surgical nutrition is where patients and many practitioners fall short. But, if you keep to a healthy and clean diet before surgery (along with regular workouts), your recovery will likely be easier and faster — and you'll feel pretty good, too.

Protein is also crucial for recovery. A diet that lacks enough protein may lead to poor wound healing and a lack of energy, Dr. Schaffner says. Steer clear of salty foods, which can cause unnecessary water retention. The same goes for soda and processed and fried foods. They offer no nutritional value, but these inflammatory foods can lead to prolonged swelling. ## **10. You May or May Not Need Drains**
For years, drains were one of the downsides of a tummy tuck. Patients don't like emptying them, and their removal can be uncomfortable. Today, not every plastic surgeon uses drains, and it all depends on your provider’s technique and preference. As Dr. Schaffner explains, progressive tension sutures minimize the need for drains. “We also use medications before and after surgery (such as gabapentin, Celebrex, and Tylenol) and during surgery (such as long-acting anesthetics) to [minimize the need for opioids/narcotics](https://aedit.com/aedition/opioid-free-plastic-surgery-pain-management) and shorten recovery times and minimize the development of complications,” he adds. Increasingly, women are looking to add a [Brazilian butt lift (BBL)](https://aedit.com/procedure/brazilian-butt-lift) to the mix for additional contouring benefits. But is the inclusion of the BBL the future of the postpartum procedure? This newer iteration is known as a ‘hourglass mommy makeover,’ and we spoke to four plastic surgeons for the lowdown on why both patients and providers are now choosing to couple butt augmentation with the traditional breast, stomach, and fat-reduction surgeries.

## **Mommy Makeover 101**
Pregnancy is beautiful, but the changes it brings to the body aren't always as embraced as the new bundle of joy that just joined the family. Not every woman who experiences pregnancy develops [loose skin](https://aedit.com/aedition/toning-stomach-skin-after-weight-loss), a [stretched-out belly button](https://aedit.com/aedition/types-of-belly-button-surgery), or [breasts that have lost their perkiness](https://aedit.com/aedition/mastopexy-breast-lift-after-pregnancy-breastfeeding). But, for those that do, a mommy makeover can address these changes and offer a long-term solution.

A [mommy makeover](https://aedit.com/procedure/mommy-makeover-solutions) is an umbrella term for a collection of procedures that are usually performed in a single session. They include breast surgery (either a [breast lift](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-lift-solutions), [breast augmentation](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-solutions), or [both](https://aedit.com/aedition/combining-breast-augmentation-with-breast-lift)), liposuction to remove obstinate fat, and a [tummy tuck](https://aedit.com/procedure/abdominoplasty) to delete excess skin and repair the abdominal muscles. “The hourglass mommy makeover, as well as a traditional mommy makeover, usually involve the aesthetic improvement of breasts, abdomen, and other areas affected by the weight fluctuations of pregnancy,” explains [John Layke, DO](https://aedit.com/provider/john-layke-645), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Beverly Hills and co-founder of [Beverly Hills MD](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fbeverlyhillsmd.com%2F). “It can also include the [thighs](https://aedit.com/concern/leg-shape-and-size), [arms](https://aedit.com/concern/arm-shape-and-size), and [neck](https://aedit.com/concern/neck-and-jawline-definition).” 

Of course, depending on a patient’s needs and wants, plastic surgeons can perform any combination of procedures. The goal is a body that resembles more of what it looked like pre-baby, and, for some women, a mommy makeover gives them the body of their dreams – even beyond what they had before having children.

When it comes to timing, it’s best to wait at least six months after childbirth before electing to undergo any cosmetic surgery. Also, most surgeons recommend not moving forward until you are [done breastfeeding](https://aedit.com/aedition/safety-of-cosmetic-procedures-during-pregnancy-breastfeeding), are close to your ideal weight, and have finished growing your family. These factors help to ensure the most optimal and lasting result.

## **What About the Fat?**
[Liposuction](https://aedit.com/procedure/liposuction) is a key component of the mommy makeover to remove stubborn pockets of fat from the abdomen, hips, waist, and even thighs. With all the fat that plastic surgeons remove, some started to put it to good use by purifying it and transplanting it to other parts of the face or body – including the butt. Adding fat to the buttocks via a [BBL](https://aedit.com/aedition/brazilian-butt-lift-procedure-safety) in conjunction with the standard mommy makeover is known as an ‘hourglass mommy makeover’ for the curves it creates. This variation can still feature all the aspects of a conventional mommy makeover, but it adds new emphasis to the buttocks.

The BBL has become increasingly popular due to current aesthetic ideals in popular culture and the fact that it's a relatively simple procedure to increase volume in the buttocks lost after pregnancy, Dr. Layke shares. It’s part of a larger shift in the goal of the procedure. “The hourglass mommy makeover is everything that a traditional mommy makeover is and includes 360-degree reshaping with fat grafting the buttocks,” says [Jules Walters III, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/jules-walters-md-34662), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Metairie, LA. “With advancements in fat-grafting technology, as well as safety, patients realize that they can achieve natural results with fat grafting to the buttocks, which enhances their mommy makeover results.”

After a traditional mommy makeover, some patients realize the surgery does not feel ‘complete’ as the backside of the body is not addressed at all, explains [S. Alexander Earle, MD](http://www.pureplasticsurgery.com/), a double board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Miami. “Therefore, after the mommy makeover, patients may return for a BBL because they want to improve their buttocks, backs (especially along the bra line), and hips to achieve a harmonious hourglass shape and round out their new figure from all angles,” he says. 

No rule says you must repurpose the removed fat. Those undergoing a mommy makeover who are perfectly happy with the size, curvature, and shape of their tush and prefer to leave it alone can – but that’s not to say they can’t use the fat for something else. Dr. Walters says patients may instead add fat to the [breasts](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-with-fat-transfer), [face](https://aedit.com/procedure/facial-fat-grafting), and even [labia majora](https://aedit.com/procedure/labia-augmentation-with-fat-transfer). It should be noted that the fat removal and transfer must happen at the same time. Unfortunately, at the moment, there is no way to bank fat for future use.

## **The Perfect Proportion**
Several changes happen to the body due to pregnancy and age, and it's not atypical for deflation of the butt to occur. It’s similar to what many women experience with the breasts. But only recently have women been more forthcoming about variations to their backside – especially the ‘[hip dip](https://aedit.com/aedition/cosmetic-procedures-for-hip-dips)’ area (where the hip and the thigh meet) – along with those affecting the breasts and abdomen. “By enhancing the buttocks with fat grafting, it allows for a smoother transition from the waist to the buttocks, creating an hourglass appearance,” Dr. Walters says. A tummy tuck alone does not create additional volume or contours to the posterior.

The addition of fat to the butt and the surrounding areas gives a more feminine curve to the lower part of the body. While it may seem counterintuitive that adding fat can create a more desirable shape, it most certainly can. Plus, the additional fat makes a lower hip-to-waist ratio that ‘cores out’ the lower back for a more sculpted appearance. In some cases, patients may need to add fat to the buttocks to make their legs look more proportionate to the rest of their bodies, and it may be the opposite for others, says [Constantino Mendieta, MD](http://www.buttsbymendieta.com/), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Miami. 

The amount of fat necessary to create these desired proportions varies from patient to patient. On average, a BBL requires anywhere from 250 to 750 ccs (or more) of fat. However, the amount of fat your plastic surgeon can remove via liposuction has to fall under a state's legal limit. For example, Dr. Mendieta says that in Florida (where he practices) the legal limit for fat extraction is four liters. “If there is any sort of cutting involved – like with a tummy tuck or breast augmentation done that same day – the legal limit is one liter,” he adds. Patients need to keep this in mind when considering how much volume they want in their butt. “If a patient does not have a lot of fat, their result may not be as dramatic,” he cautions.

Of course, how much fat exists naturally and the aesthetic someone is trying to achieve influence how much fat to use. For example, Dr. Walters says he sometimes focuses just on the lateral buttocks (i.e. the hip dip) if the patient has a limited amount of donor fat. However, if more significant volumes of fat are available, plastic surgeons can transplant more of it to the butt. Dr. Layke advises that larger volumes of fat can lead to an exaggerated waist-to-hip ratio, so it’s important to discuss your desired results with your surgeon to determine what will be safe and effective.

## **One Surgery vs. Two: Which Route to Go**
A traditional mommy makeover is usually performed all at once (though a patient may choose to break it up). With the hourglass mommy makeover, not every plastic surgeon who performs the surgery chooses to do it all at once. Some, including Dr. Earle, prefer splitting it into two separate surgeries. “It is safer for the patient this way,” he says. In addition, staging the surgery reduces [complication rates](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-cosmetic-surgery-complications), makes recovery easier, and results in less discomfort for the patient, he adds. When operating on the buttocks, the breasts, and the stomach, it can be challenging to [sleep comfortably](https://aedit.com/aedition/sleeping-better-after-cosmetic-surgery-aesthetic-procedures), which is crucial for a [healthy recovery](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-plastic-surgery-recovery-nurses-centers-products).

Another critical reason why an hourglass mommy makeover may be broken up is to increase the rate of fat survival. For the fat to successfully establish itself after transfer, patients [should not sit or apply pressure](https://aedit.com/aedition/brazilian-butt-lift-bbl-recovery-healing-process) to their buttocks or hips for up to six weeks post-op. “This becomes very difficult if another surgical procedure is done to the front of the body simultaneously,” Dr. Earle says. For this reason alone, he recommends doing the BBL first and then, three months later, performing the breast procedure and tummy tuck portions.

Some surgeons may agree to perform the BBL in conjunction with the other two. And since some patients don’t want to undergo surgery twice, they opt to have all three areas of the body addressed in a single surgery. ## **The Ideal Candidate for an Hourglass Mommy Makeover**
Not every woman undergoing a mommy makeover has deflation in the buttocks, nor does every patient want the additional surgery. However, Dr. Layke says he recommends the hourglass mommy makeover to women who have square body frames, a flatter buttocks, and/or fat accumulation in the back and flank region. It's also suitable for those who have lost a significant amount of weight – whether from weight loss or after pregnancy – and see noticeable changes in their bodies.

Of course, patients need to be in excellent health, at their ideal weight, and have the right amount and kind of fat. “Those with too high a BMI (greater than 30) or who have a high degree of visceral fat are not candidates,” Dr. Earle says. As long as there is enough fat to remove and harvest, most women undergoing a mommy makeover can opt for the BBL portion of the surgery, and Dr. Walters says 99 percent of the mommy makeovers in his practice “include fat grafting to the buttocks to optimize the overall shape.” 

For patients who lack enough fat to harvest for transfer, there are alternatives to achieving more of an hourglass figure. Call them what you will – tiger stripes, mama scars, badges of courage, or even permanent lightning bolts – but [stretch marks](https://aedit.com/concern/stretch-marks) are a physical and, sometimes, emotional sign of change within the body. These etched-in lines represent tears in the dermis, and it’s estimated that 50 to 90 percent of women have stretch marks (men can get them, too). While they pose no threat to the skin or body, their presence may bother you.
 
We’re going to be totally transparent upfront: Stretch marks cannot be fully erased. But, with that said, the right mix of at-home skincare and professional intervention can help make them less noticeable. If you’re curious about what that entails, this article is for you. ## **Stretch Marks 101** 
From the early teenage years through adulthood, [stretch marks](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-stretch-marks) can form at any time. These marks are medically known as striae and are technically a form of thin scarring within the dermal layer of the skin. Anything from a growth spurt during puberty to pregnancy to weight gain to weightlifting to even certain medications can cause stretch marks to form. Most often found on the stomach, thighs, butt, breasts, arms, and back, stretch marks pose zero threat to the skin's health. But, because they are technically a scar, they do tend to be permanent once they're there, says [Corey Hartman, MD](https://www.instagram.com/dr.coreyhartman/?hl=en), a board certified dermatologist in Birmingham, AL. 
 
Stretch marks are totally normal — some even call them a rite of passage when entering adulthood and motherhood — and about 80 percent of Americans have them in some shape or form. However, not all stretch marks are equal. Unbeknownst to many, there are six different types, although red (striae rubrae) and white (striae albae) stretch marks are most common and what most of us typically associate with the term. 
 
All stretch marks follow the same development path. They start slightly raised. Depending on your skin tone, they can take on a pink, red, purplish, or dark brown hue. Typically, stretch marks are red due to the involvement of blood vessels when they first arise, and they can also be itchy before eventually maturing, says [Mark Albert, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/mark-albert-md-77), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in New York City. As they evolve, they transition to a lighter color. While older stretch marks may appear to be white, they're actually just a shade that’s lighter than your normal skin tone, explains [Joshua Fox, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/joshua-fox-md-282), an NYC-based board certified dermatologist.
 
## ** The Right Time to Treat Stretch Marks**
New stretch marks that are still in their infancy and tend to be [easier to correct](https://aedit.com/procedure/stretch-mark-solutions) than more mature ones. That’s not to say that older ones are resistant to treatment though. They’re not, but they do require a different course of action. “If they are still red, the goal is to treat the irritation and swelling,” Dr. Albert says. “If they are white, treatment aims to increase collagen production and improve hydration.”
 
While many people wait to treat their stretch marks – mainly in the hopes that they'll fade away on their own – Dr. Hartman says that it's best to treat them as soon as possible. “Remember, stretch marks are scars,” he explains. “Because they're not inflamed, there's no need to worry about pain, itching, or growth, as there may be with other scars.” New moms take note: “I always warn patients who have [stretch marks from pregnancy](https://aedit.com/aedition/most-common-skin-hair-conditions-during-pregnancy) and plan on having more kids to wait until they are done having children before treating them,” he adds.
 
## **Can You Prevent Stretch Marks?**
Unfortunately, there's no surefire way to prevent your body from creating stretch marks, but there are a few best practices to follow to limit their development:
 
1. **Skincare During Pregnancy**: If you're pregnant, regularly apply a hydrating oil to the belly, hips, or anywhere else your body is expanding. “Oils are great because they allow the skin to be more malleable, especially when pregnant,” Dr. Hartman says. Basically, any time the skin is abruptly stretched or forced to expand, collagen and elastin proteins in the dermis can rupture and leave scar tissue (i.e. stretch marks) behind. The more you can minimize such circumstances, the more likely you are to avoid striae.

## **The Best Treatments to Minimize Stretch Marks** 
There is no cure for stretch marks, and most plastic surgeons and dermatologists are transparent with their patients about what is and isn’t possible and the expected results. Remember, what works for one person may not be as effective for someone else, which is why there are a myriad of options available.
 
### **1. Load up on Hydrators**
- **Best For**: White stretch marks

**How It Works**: Perhaps the most accessible and affordable option, at-home creams, serums, and lotions do have a place in a stretch mark treatment protocol. They probably will not produce as noticeable an effect as professional solutions, but, if you're looking for where to begin, stretch mark creams are always a good starting point. As Dr. Albert explains, brands market emollients as treatments, though hypothetically any ointment that improves skin hydration could improve white stretch marks. With that said, clinical evidence is often lacking.

Should you go the route of over-the-counter topicals, look for products with collagen-stimulating ingredients, clinical research, and proven results. Our pick? Silicone acts as a coating of sorts to help smooth out the skin texture. **How It Works**: Microneedling (sometimes referred to as collagen induction therapy) is a procedure that aims to stimulate collagen and elastin production to tighten, lift, and rejuvenate the skin. “[Microneedling](https://aedit.com/procedure/microneedling) involves a handheld device with a multi-needle tip attachment that creates controlled depth micro-injuries to the skin that allow for optimal absorption of topical products, enhancing their effects while stimulating the skin's natural repair process to produce collagen and elastin,” says [Kristina Kitsos, RN](http://www.kristinakitsos.com/), a skincare expert and cosmetic injector. As such, “it's an effective treatment that helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, minimize pores, scars, as well as stretch marks,” she adds.

Treatments like [microneedling with radiofrequency (RF)](https://aedit.com/procedure/microneedling-with-radiofrequency) can offer additional benefits. Beyond the traditional microneedling effects, RF works to tighten the deeper layers of skin so that it is firmer on the surface. “Besides collagen production, it also promotes elastin and proteoglycans, too,” Dr. Albert shares. His favorite device for this purpose? Morpheus8 by InMode. “The energy should deliver at a minimum of 3.5 millimeters below the skin surface, and this device has the capability of delivering energy up to 8 millimeters,” he explains. Additionally, [platelet-rich plasma (PRP)](https://aedit.com/procedure/microneedling-with-prp) can also be used in tandem with microneedling to improve the healing process of fresher stretch marks. Other forms of microneedling use add-ons like exosomes, which help restore cells and enhance cell-to-cell communication for facilitating the exchange of RNA and other vital proteins between cells like fibroblasts that make collagen. Kitsos says the benefits of microneedling for stretch marks using exosomes and/or PRP – which is safe for all skin tones and minimally invasive – includes:

A series of treatments can garner pretty dramatic results depending on the severity of the stretch marks.

### **5. Beam Me Up**
- **Best For**: White & red stretch marks

**How It Works**: Lasers are a long-practiced technique for reducing color and texture in stretch marks. Some devices, like the [erbium YAG laser](https://aedit.com/procedure/ablative-erbium-laser), are part of doctors' toolboxes for their ability to improve the appearance of older white striae. Despite the improvement that a laser can provide, each modality has a unique ability. “All lasers serve different purposes,” Dr. Hartman explains. “If it's a color and texture issue, a series of treatments with multiple lasers is probably going to be what your doctor recommends.” Here’s an overview:

- **Vascular & Pulsed Dye Lasers**: These lasers improve redness in stretch marks and help take down lingering swelling. As Dr. Hartman explains, red stretch marks usually have more blood vessels involved and show more redness either because the skin is inherently thin or it's trying to heal itself. “Red stretch marks are also a characteristic of lighter skin,” he adds. “You don't see them so much in people of color.” To effectively zap away any lingering redness, a [pulsed dye laser](https://aedit.com/procedure/pulsed-dye-laser) or vascular laser, like the [Cutera Excel® V](https://aedit.com/procedure/excel-v) (it has a stretch mark setting) or the V-beam laser, needs to be used to decrease the pigment. While these treatments can improve the redness, they will not amend the skin's texture.
- **Fractional Lasers**: Fractional lasers stimulate the production of collagen and elastin to make the skin more pliable and plump. “When there is a stretch mark, initially, if you rub your hand over it, your hand falls into a hole or indentation in the skin,” Dr. Fox notes. “Using a laser to stimulate collagen fills that dip.” Lasers are able to “remodel the scar and make it much less noticeable,” he adds.

## **What Causes Loose Stomach Skin?**
No matter the cause, weight gain and loss can have significant effects on the elasticity of the skin. “After rapid weight loss or postpartum, often skin does not shrink back easily,” says [Dendy Engelman, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/dendy-engelman-md-312), a board certified cosmetic dermatologist in New York City. “As a result, some people are left with loose skin.”

As it turns out, collagen and elastin aren’t just the culprits behind sagging skin on the face — they impact laxity from head to toe. “A cause for loose skin is the stretching of the dermis beyond the limits of its elasticity,” explains [Cameron Francis, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/cameron-francis-md-29673), a board eligible plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Del Mar, CA. “After the loss of the underlying fat or birth of the baby, in some individuals, the skin is unable to retract because it has lost its elasticity, like a rubber band that has been overstretched and no longer snaps back to its original length.” It’s worth noting that this process also leads to [stretch marks](https://aedit.com/concern/stretch-marks). Dr. Engelman recommends in-office radiofrequency (RF) procedures for patients looking to tone loose skin after weight loss. When setting your expectations for a [mommy makeover](https://aedit.com/concern/mommy-makeover), remember ‘makeover’ is the most crucial part of the term. As that all-encompassing word implies, a mommy makeover involves multiple surgeries — often a [breast augmentation](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-with-implants) or [breast lift](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-lift), [tummy tuck](https://aedit.com/procedure/abdominoplasty) (with or without [diastasis recti repair](https://aedit.com/procedure/diastasis-recti-repair)), and/or vaginal rejuvenation (think: [labiaplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/labiaplasty)). The variety of treatments makes for a full-body recovery process.

Before we dive into that recovery, it’s important to discuss the stigma around the ‘mommy makeover’ moniker. While it’s become a way to describe the [suite of procedures](https://aedit.com/procedure/mommy-makeover-solutions) some women opt for after having children, [Kelly Killeen, MD](https://www.drcassileth.com/surgeons/dr-kelly-killeen.html), a double board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Cassileth Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills, says many patients who have given birth choose this popular combination of treatments without necessarily using the title ‘mommy makeover.’ 

“I think the assumption that becoming a mommy destroyed or did something bad to your body is very distasteful for a lot of women,” she says. “There's nothing wrong with being bothered by changes that happen [after pregnancy or breastfeeding](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-pregnancy-affects-cosmetic-surgery-results), but I think the assertion that all mothers need a ‘makeover’ is really upsetting to a lot of women.” In her practice, she does the combination of surgeries that amount to a so-called ‘mommy makeover’ without using the term.

No matter what you call this stack of procedures, you’ll need to come home from the hospital with a plan for pain management, childcare, and plenty of time to rest. ## **The First 48 Hours After Surgery**
“I always say that planning is everything,” explains [Lauren Chmielewski, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/lauren-chmielewski-md-143), a New York City-based board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon. “You want to make sure your life is set up in such a way that you can stop worrying about everything.” In the case of a mommy makeover, that usually means being prepared with childcare, [comfortable clothing](https://aedit.com/aedition/benefits-of-compression-garments-after-cosmetic-surgery), and [food in the fridge](https://aedit.com/aedition/meal-plans-diet-before-after-cosmetic-surgery). With the pre-planning taken care of, patients can focus on spending the crucial first few days after surgery in restful recovery.

The bulk of the pain and swelling after surgery will take place in the first 48 hours, she says. When your [caretaker](https://aedit.com/aedition/plastic-surgery-recovery-nursing-concierge) brings you home after surgery, you should already have your pain medication and any antibiotics (if prescribed) ready and waiting. But you may not want to head straight to bed — Dr. Chmielewski advises her patients to [move around gently](https://aedit.com/aedition/sleeping-better-after-cosmetic-surgery-aesthetic-procedures) in order to prevent blood clots. She also highlights the importance of hydration and limiting salty foods in order to curb any [excess swelling](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-minimize-swelling-after-cosmetic-surgery).

## **Pain Management After Surgery**
As Dr. Killeen explains, many of her patients get by with over-the-counter [pain management drugs](https://aedit.com/aedition/opioid-crisis-plastic-surgery-recovery-pain-management) (think: Tylenol and Motrin). This is especially true of patients with small children, who “generally prefer to have their wits about them,” she adds. They typically take scheduled doses of OTC medicines, which can be enough to stay comfortable while riding out the early days of pain and swelling.

The type of pain management your doctor recommends may depend on the procedures you have. [Labiaplasty](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-questions-to-ask-before-a-labiaplasty) is often considered the most uncomfortable of the mommy makeover surgeries, combining an already-sensitive area with the fact that patients will need to use the bathroom and keep the area clean. The pain involved with a tummy tuck, meanwhile, can vary from quite uncomfortable (if your surgery requires [muscle repair](https://aedit.com/aedition/diastasis-recti-repair-abdominal-separation-post-pregnancy-weight-loss)) to “not terribly bad,” Dr. Chmielewski says, if it doesn’t. Generally speaking, breast surgery should cause the least [amount of discomfort](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-much-plastic-surgery-really-hurts).

## **Resuming Normal Activities** 
Since mommy makeover patients are, yes, mothers, childcare is a major consideration in post-surgery planning. For children under the age of five, Dr. Killeen suggests having an additional caretaker to help you with the kids for about 10 days. “It’s hard to pick your kids up because you’re going to potentially affect your surgery results and maybe even injure yourself,” she says. If your children are older than five, she recommends three to four days of extra childcare. After about two weeks, you should be able to (gently) resume normal activities. 

Keep in mind that the psychological recovery from a mommy makeover may feel different or more intense than after other procedures. “Especially for moms of small children, it can feel difficult to make a decision to focus on yourself and [briefly] hand over some of the childcare responsibilities,” Dr. Killeen shares. “It’s pretty common for patients to go through [a little bit of the blues](https://aedit.com/aedition/treatment-for-post-plastic-surgery-depression-blues-during-recovery) for a while after surgery, where they feel almost regretful or guilty that they actually made a decision that focuses on them again and not solely on their child.” To help with any of these feelings, she says the caregiver should understand the weight of the surgery and be prepared to fully support the patient.

## **Final Results**
As with other procedures, the way you look after you leave the hospital has little bearing on the final results. Since a mommy makeover usually involves multiple surgeries, results can reveal themselves at different times. Labiaplasty typically takes about three months to heal, and tummy tucks and breast surgeries (both [breast lift](https://aedit.com/aedition/mastopexy-breast-lift-after-pregnancy-breastfeeding) and [breast augmentation](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-pregnancy-and-breastfeeding-impact-breast-implants)) involve four to six months of recovery.

Wanting your pre-baby body back — after the triumphant wave of the miracle of childbirth subsides, of course — is an extremely relatable sentiment. In fact, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) [reports](https://www.plasticsurgery.org/documents/News/Statistics/2019/plastic-surgery-statistics-full-report-2019.pdf) that three out of the five most performed surgical procedures for women in 2019 — breast augmentation, liposuction, and tummy tuck — make up the crux of the so-called ‘[mommy makeover](https://aedit.com/concern/mommy-makeover).’ 

Despite its cute moniker, it is an intensive surgery that combines multiple procedures into one fell swoop operation. So, what procedures does a mommy makeover include, specifically? Well, that depends on who you ask. “There are a ton of variations to a mommy makeover,” says [David Sieber, MD](https://www.instagram.com/dr.davidsieber/?hl=en), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in San Francisco. “There’s a lot going on, and it’s serious in the fact that it’s a longer procedure because they’re having so much done at once.”

One thing all providers can agree on? There is a lot of room for interpretation. “A [mommy makeover](https://aedit.com/procedure/mommy-makeover-solutions) is a general term to describe a constellation of procedures, but most commonly addresses the patient’s abdomen and breasts,” says Manhattan-based double board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, [David Shafer, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/david-shafer-md-153), noting that a stomach’s lingering round appearance months after childbirth is due to the separation of the abdominal muscles ([diastasis recti](https://aedit.com/aedition/diastasis-recti-repair-abdominal-separation-post-pregnancy-weight-loss)) during pregnancy and can only be restored surgically.  

If a mommy makeover is on your radar now or sometime down the road, you likely have a lot of questions. Below, we are breaking down the most important #realtalk topics to ask yourself *and* your surgeon — from aligning on specific goals to the surgical and recovery plans, and everything in between.

### **1. Ask yourself: Do I know what a mommy makeover actually is?**
Before you can know if it’s the surgery you want, you need all the deets first. “For me, a mommy makeover usually consists of [liposuction](https://aedit.com/procedure/liposuction) — most commonly the abdomen and flanks — the [tummy tuck](https://aedit.com/procedure/abdominoplasty), and then some sort of breast surgery, which could mean augmentation or just a lift,” Dr. Sieber explains. The breast procedure could be a [breast lift](https://aedit.com/aedition/mastopexy-breast-lift-after-pregnancy-breastfeeding), [breast augmentation](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-solutions), [fat transfer](https://aedit.com/aedition/hybrid-breast-augmentation-with-implants-fat-transfer), [breast reduction](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-reduction-and-revision-solutions), or some combination. “Basically, the breast surgery, whatever it is, restores loss of volume after having children and/or removing extra skin as a result of breastfeeding,” he says.

And then there are add-on procedures that are a little less common but can still be thrown into the mommy makeover mix. Those include [vaginal rejuvenation](https://aedit.com/procedure/vaginal-rejuvenation-solutions), [labiaplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/labiaplasty), or even just additional areas for liposuction (think: the thighs or arms) and are all “pretty easy to add on at the same time,” Dr. Sieber shares.

### **2. Ask yourself: What are my ultimate goals?**
Your body goals and what you’d like your figure to resemble post-op after everything settles will determine your surgical plan. “The procedures depend on the patient’s anatomy and desired results,” Dr. Shafer explains. 

Take the breasts, for example. “If a patient has small breasts, an A or B cup, then often [breast implants](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-with-implants) are enough to improve the shape, size, and give a slight lift,” he says. But, if the breasts are drooping, “then a lift would be necessary.” For a patient seeking “larger and lifted breasts,” meanwhile, “a breast lift *and* implants are performed,” he adds. ### **3. Ask your doctor: I had a C-section. Can I still get a mommy makeover?**
In a word: Absolutely. “A c-section scar is often a reason why patients want a tummy tuck,” Dr. Shafer says. “The [c-section scar](https://aedit.com/aedition/invasive-non-invasive-procedures-to-fix-appearance-of-c-section-scar) creates a point of adherence to the underlying tissue, which often leads to a shelf of loose tissue hanging over the skin.” One of the main reasons for this? No skin is removed during the c-section, so it leaves the stretched skin to sag. “When I perform a tummy tuck or an abdominoplasty, I remove the c-section scar and work to make the incision at or below the level of the c-section incision,” Dr. Shafer notes.    

### **4. Ask yourself: How much time do I have for recovery?**
Dr. Sieber does not mince words when it comes to getting real about recovering from a mommy makeover: “You’re going to be very, very uncomfortable.” Both surgeons say that recovery varies from person to person and is influenced by their age and overall health, but all patients should expect antibiotics and [narcotics](https://aedit.com/aedition/opioid-crisis-plastic-surgery-recovery-pain-management) to ensure that the pain — especially the first few days post-surgery — is tolerable. Dr. Sieber adds that patients “definitely need to plan for a mommy makeover” and will need a 24/7 support person. That person can be a partner, sibling, friend, or [professional caretaker](https://aedit.com/aedition/plastic-surgery-recovery-nursing-concierge) for the first two to three days post-surgery because “you really need to have someone there who can help take care of you.” 

Dr. Shafer has his patients wear [compression garments](https://aedit.com/aedition/benefits-of-compression-garments-after-cosmetic-surgery) for six to eight weeks and tells them to hold off on lifting children or heavy items for about six weeks as well in order to avoid engaging the core abdominal muscles while they’re healing. “Most of the [swelling](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-minimize-swelling-after-cosmetic-surgery) and [bruising](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-prevent-bruising-after-lasers-filler-botox) will resolve in the first few weeks,” he says. “Patients will start to feel like themselves again and get back to work and their regular activities, but still need to do incision care and dressing changes.” In the months following the surgery, Dr. Shafer recommends lasers and other in-office technologies for incision treatment and [scar reduction](https://aedit.com/aedition/minimizing-scars-after-surgery). 

While swelling subsides over the first few months, the sutures Dr. Sieber uses for a mommy makeover last up to six months before dissolving. “So, even though patients are feeling a little better, if they turn a certain way and feel a tug from the suture, they get zingers from the nerves,” he explains. “There are a lot of little annoying things that will randomly happen three to six months after surgery.”

### **5. Ask yourself: Am I planning to have more children?**
If you are looking to [maximize your experience](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-aesthetic-procedures-to-combine-to-maximize-appointments) under the knife, a mommy makeover surgery is the most time-, cost-, and recovery-effective for women who have no plans for future children, according to Dr. Sieber. Needless to say, surprises happen, so rest assured that a future pregnancy wouldn’t disqualify you as a candidate for a mommy makeover — it would just reverse the results as the abdomen re-expands and body changes.

### **6. Ask yourself: Am I still breastfeeding?**
“The usual rule of thumb is you want to be done breastfeeding for six months before doing any type of breast surgery,” Dr. Sieber shares. As he explains, you want all the milk glands to be done producing milk because, if you perform a breast surgery when the patient is still lactating, you could get milk in the wound. That “increases the risk of getting a bacterial contamination or other infections,” he cautions. If you’re super eager to get your pre-baby body back, a mommy makeover can be performed six to eight weeks after discontinuing breastfeeding, Dr. Shafer says.

### **7. Ask your doctor: Should I do all the procedures I want at once?**
Since a mommy makeover combines several procedures, it is generally one of the more [time-consuming aesthetic surgeries](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-surgical-and-non-surgical-cosmetic-procedures-to-combine). In fact, Dr. Sieber reserves his entire day when a mommy makeover is scheduled because they can take upwards of five hours. 

After he aligns with patients on the intense recovery, time in the OR is the next hurdle. “The question to ask is how long it’s going to take the surgeon to complete the procedure,” he explains. “Mommy makeovers can vary a lot, so it can be anywhere from four to seven hours.” Generally speaking, surgeons will only perform the procedures they know they can fit into a six-hour period to minimize risk. “One thing you definitely don’t want is a surgery longer than six or seven hours because the risk of complications gets higher,” Dr. Sieber cautions.

The changes someone experiences during and after breastfeeding, however, are much less discussed. 

Needless to say, the breasts bear the brunt of breastfeeding, and some mothers who experience sagging breasts or a lack of fullness seek to alter their new breast shape or restore them to their pre-baby look, and a [mastopexy (a.k.a. breast lift)](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-lift) is a cosmetic surgery procedure that can improve the shape, volume, and positioning of the chest. So, what happens when you get a breast lift after breastfeeding? The AEDITION asks the experts.

## **How Breastfeeding Changes the Breasts** 
Although breast changes vary from woman to woman, everyone encounters an increase in size during pregnancy. “The hormonal changes that occur — including estrogen and progesterone surges — cause the breast gland to increase in size,” says [Umbareen Mahmood, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/umbareen-mahmood-md-23), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in New York City. Throughout pregnancy, the breasts will continue to get larger, and the changes do not stop there. 

The breasts swell with the ability to produce milk during and after pregnancy, says [Jacob Unger, MD](https://www.maxwellaesthetics.com/plastic-surgery-nashville/jacob-g-unger-md/), a Nashville-based board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon. The act of breastfeeding then exacerbates this cycle by expanding and contracting the breasts multiple times per day for the entire breastfeeding period. “At the end of the cycle, there is an involution of the parenchyma, or the milk-producing part of the breast,” he explains. “This, coupled with the fact that the skin is stretched many times, often results in a saggier and more empty-appearing breast.”

## **Getting a Breast Lift After Breastfeeding** 
For women who wish to restore or alter the appearance of their breasts after breastfeeding, a breast lift (performed alone or in tandem with another breast surgery) may be the way to go. To determine if you are a candidate for the procedure, your plastic surgeon will examine the current breast shape and position, focusing primarily on where the nipple and areola location is relative to the inframammary fold (i.e. the lower part of the breast where it meets the chest), Dr. Mahmood shares.

“The grades of breast ptosis, or drooping, are classified based on the nipple position relative to this fold,” she explains. There is a three-grade scale, and grade three ptosis is “when the nipple points straight down and approximately three centimeters below the fold,” Dr. Mahmood says. But it’s not just about the nipple. “Some patients have ‘pseudoptosis,’ which is when the nipple is still in a good position but the bottom of the breast is sagging,” she notes.

After assessing the grade of ptosis, a surgeon will discuss the best breast lift method for your degree of the sagging and ptosis. “The options can start with [using radiofrequency energy](https://aedit.com/procedure/radiofrequency-assisted-breast-lift) to tighten the breasts in a scarless manner for mild ptosis, up to a much more involved procedure with various scar patterns to help tighten the breasts as necessary,” Dr. Unger explains. 

Below are the most common surgical techniques:

### **Breast Lift Techniques:**
- **Crescent Lift**: “A crescent lift involves a scar just along the top outer edge of the areola and is for patients who need minor nipple elevation,” Dr. Mahmood explains.
- **Periareolar Lift**: Best for patients with minor breast sagging, the incision is around the entire areola. 
- **Vertical Lift**: Also known as a ‘lollipop lift,’ an incision is made around the areola and vertically down the breast fold. “It is best for patients with moderate nipple and breast sagging, pseudoptosis (when breast tissue underneath your nipples and areolae has sagged), and more extensive breast reshaping,” Dr. Mahmood says.
- **Inverted-T Lift**: “This is best for patients who have significant sagging of the breast tissue and nipple and those with grade three ptosis,” Dr. Mahmood explains. Also called an ‘anchor lift,’ it includes an incision around the areola, a vertical incision to the breast fold, and a curvilinear incision along the breast fold.

## **The Benefits of a Breast Lift After Breastfeeding** 
A more youthful breast shape and restored confidence are among the most common benefits post-breast lift. Patients also describe experiencing a “decrease in back pain, less under-the-breast sweating, and a reduction of rashes, bra grooving, and shoulder pain,” Dr. Unger shares. 

Another benefit? The minimal maintenance involved. The results are permanent, though patients need to “maintain [their] weight and use a supportive bra,” Dr. Mahmood says. Generally speaking, women are encouraged to [delay surgery](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-pregnancy-affects-cosmetic-surgery-results) until they are done having children, and it’s important to remember that the natural aging process will continue to be a factor. “Gravity is always present over time, and the breasts continue to stretch as you age,” Dr. Unger cautions.

From acne and hyperpigmentation to stretch marks and laxity, pregnancy can have a pretty significant impact on the skin. On one end of the spectrum, women tend to enjoy thicker fuller hair during gestation, while increased blood flow helps promote that flushed, pregnancy ‘glow.’ But not all changes are quite so positive. “There are massive changes in the skin in the first trimester and there may be hypersensitivities in the skin,” says skin and wellness expert Marie Reynolds of [Marie Reynolds London](https://www.mariereynoldslondon.com/). Here, we asked the experts what exactly happens to the skin and hair during pregnancy and how to address those shifts. 

## **1. Acne**
Not just a teenage concern, [acne](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-hormonal-acne-body-acne-cystic-acne-whiteheads-blackheads) is common in pregnancy. “Many women who are on oral contraceptive pills have clear skin because the pill regulates the hormones and oil production,” [Joshua Zeichner, MD](http://www.zeichnerdermatology.com/), a board certified dermatologist in New York City. “Going off of the oral contraceptive pill means there is no longer that control.” Additionally, the normal hormonal shifts that women experience during pregnancy stimulate oil glands, pushing them to overdrive, and, often, causing acne, he adds. 

But that’s not all. “Pregnancy may mean [cravings for food](https://aedit.com/aedition/relationship-between-food-and-acne-breakouts) you don’t normally eat and sugary and starchy foods,” Dr. Zeichner says. This increases inflammation in the skin and activates oil production. Reynolds agrees that certain cravings can impact the health of the skin. Sugar cravings, for instance, can create imbalances in the skin and affect the microbiome. “The growing fetus will put pressure on the digestive system, as well,” Reynolds adds. “Be well hydrated and make sure the baby isn’t dictating what you crave.” She recommends eating flaxseeds and chia seeds during pregnancy. 

Connecticut-based board certified dermatologist [Mona Gohara, MD](https://dermatologyofct.com/about/our-providers/mona-gohara-m-d/), says that acne is a wildcard in pregnancy. If you have it, it can get worse or better. If you never had it, you can get it. The tricky part is treatment. As we’ve outlined in our [guide to skincare during pregnancy](https://aedit.com/aedition/skincare-ingredients-to-avoid-during-pregnancy-breastfeeding), many common ingredients are off limits for pregnant women. “Even over-the-counter products like benzoyl peroxide shouldn’t technically be used in pregnancy,” Dr. Gohara says.

## **2. Pigmentation**
Pigmentation is another common skin condition during pregnancy, says New York City-based board certified dermatologist [Rosemarie Ingleton, MD](https://ingletonmd.com/). Known as the “mask of pregnancy,” Ames Melasma affects many women. Dr. Zeichner notes that the reason for [unwanted pigmentation](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-treat-hyperpigmentation-with-skincare-cosmetic-treatments) is unclear, but melanocytes (i.e. pigment-producing cells) are sensitive to hormones like estrogen. “During high-estrogen states, pigment-producing cells are pushed to produce more melanin, our skin’s natural pigment,” he explains. To treat it or, at the very least, prevent it from getting worse, Dr. Ingleton suggests using [mineral sunscreen](https://aedit.com/aedition/difference-between-chemical-sunscreen-physical-mineral-sunscreen) and skin brighteners, like her [ROSE MD Complexion Brightening Booster Serum](https://www.rosemdskin.com/products/rose-complexion-booster). ## **3. Stretch Marks**
[Stretch marks](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-stretch-marks) are essentially scars that develop when the skin is stretched faster than it can adjust. During pregnancy, the growth of the child can exceed the ability of the dermis to compensate, explains [Christopher Funderburk, MD](https://neinsteinplasticsurgery.com/), an associate plastic surgeon at Neinstein Plastic Surgery. The growth is so rapid, in fact, that some areas of the skin are not able to receive the proper amount of nutrient-rich blood, and the collagen and elastin fibers physically break from the strain. This leads to areas of ‘dead’ skin that is devoid of its natural, adaptive properties. “This skin no longer has elastic properties, and the skin has a change in coloration,” he says. 

Once the child is born and the skin deflates, you see those areas as stretch marks. They most often show up in the lower abdomen, below the navel, but they can impact the breasts, thighs, and arms as well. “Many patients tell us that they have spent a small fortune on various treatments and have seen little to no effect,” says Dr. Funderburk says. “And, since stretch marks are ‘dead’ skin, no amount of cream or lotion will bring these areas back to life.” Instead, in-office treatments are required.

“During our modern [mommy makeover](https://aedit.com/aedition/the-mommy-makeover-how-to-bounce-back-after-a-baby), we are able to remove this area with a simple skin incision,” Dr. Funderburk says. “The incision is often the size of a C-section scar, and we can often place this in an even lower position. Since the incision mimics that of a C-section scar, no one needs to know that the mom ever required a [tummy tuck](https://aedit.com/procedure/abdominoplasty).” Non-surgical treatments for stretch marks include [microneedling](https://aedit.com/procedure/microneedling) and [Fraxel®](https://aedit.com/procedure/nonablative-fractional-lasers) laser treatments. It should be noted that white stretch marks are often the most difficult to treat, but Dr. Ingleton says they can be improved a bit by employing one of these options. 

## **4. Abdominal Skin Laxity**
Needless to say, the same growth that leads to stretch marks can cause abdominal skin laxity. Dr. Funderburk says that with new, energy-based technologies, skin contraction is possible. “This allows us to combat skin laxity and thereby minimize the length of the incision needed to recreate a taut abdomen,” he notes. Previously, women looking to recreate their pre-pregnancy contour required a lengthy incision. “This is no longer the case, as we employ [energy-assisted liposuction](https://aedit.com/aedition/high-definition-liposuction-techniques-for-body-contouring) devices and treatments such as J-Plasma to contract the collagen fibers and physically shrink and tighten the skin,” Dr. Funderburk shares. 

## **5. Facial Changes** 
During pregnancy, women commonly gain weight and retain fluid, and this may mean puffiness of the face. In some cases, hormonal changes may cause women to develop dark hair on the chin or sideburns, where they previously did not have it. After delivery, with relatively rapid weight loss after relatively rapid weight gain, the face may appear sunken or hollow. “In some cases this will improve on its own, while, in others, cosmetic procedures like injectables might be needed to restore lost volume,” Dr. Zeichner says. 

## **6. Veins**
“When the baby grows, it creates pressure on your venous system and, poof, varicose veins,” Dr. Gohara says. She generally advises leg elevation and, if needed, mild compression stockings. “If they persist, wait until you are done having kids to fix them cosmetically,” she shares. But, with women often undergoing cosmetic surgery and other minimally invasive procedures earlier on in life and the average age of first-time mothers getting older, it is something that increasingly needs to be considered. 

For certain procedures, it may actually be preferable to wait until after having children to undergo treatment, but that isn’t always how it works out. From Botox® to breast reductions, we’re breaking down how pregnancy can impact the results of cosmetic surgeries and procedures and heading from women who have experienced the effects first hand. 

## **1. Breast Augmentation and Reduction**
Depending on when a woman plans to have children, plastic surgeons may recommend they wait until after her pregnancy to undergo a breast surgery. But many women opt to go under the knife long before getting pregnant.

## **2. Injectables** 
[Neurotoxins](https://aedit.com/aedition/comparing-neurotoxin-botulinum-type-a-injections-botox-dysport-jeuveau-xeomin) (think: Botox®, Dysport®, Jeuveau®, and Xeomin®) and [dermal fillers](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-dermal-fillers) are some of the most common minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, but their effects can change during pregnancy. Many women find their faces tend to swell naturally during pregnancy, especially in the lip area. The impact of this is two-fold:

1. You may find that your lips (or other areas augmented with filler) are fuller than you would like them to
2. The skin on your face may show fewer lines and wrinkles and generally look fuller 

Neurotoxins and fillers are [not administered to women during pregnancy or breastfeeding](https://aedit.com/aedition/safety-of-cosmetic-procedures-during-pregnancy-breastfeeding). But those who had a treatment prior to getting pregnant, may notice that the effects of the injectables wear off more quickly than usual due to the increase in the body’s metabolic rate. From that perspective, you may notice dynamic lines, in particular, become more pronounced. 

## **3. Tummy Tuck**
[Abdominoplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/abdominoplasty) (a.k.a. tummy tuck) is one of the cosmetic procedures that is most affected by pregnancy. While the procedure has no negative impact on a woman’s ability to become pregnant and have a healthy pregnancy, excess skin in the area can become problematic again postpartum. 

The skin and muscles that were tightened during the procedure will stretch during gestation, as they would for women who have not had the procedure. Since the skin and muscles may not bounce back to the shape they were in before pregnancy, a revision procedure may be needed to restore the original results. It’s advised that women wait until they have finished having children to avoid repeated surgery.

## **4. Labiaplasty**
Women who have had [labiaplasty](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-labiaplasty) in the past may be concerned about how the area that was treated will change during pregnancy and childbirth. Much like for tummy tuck patients, the effects of pregnancy and childbirth will be the same for them as for women who have not had the procedure. Depending on your body and hormone levels throughout, the labia may grow significantly.

In these cases, revision surgery is usually possible. There are a few factors that need to be taken into consideration, including the viability of the remaining tissue. Women would ideally wait until after they have finished having children to undergo a revision procedure, if possible.

## **5. Laser Hair Removal**
Women who have completed their course of [laser hair removal](https://aedit.com/procedure/laser-hair-removal) before pregnancy may need to revisit their hair removal routine again after pregnancy. While the hair may seem to be gone forever, the treatment can't target every single follicle. When women’s hormones fluctuate after childbirth, it is not uncommon for some of those follicles that were missed the first time round can be activated and start growing hair. 

While it is possible for significant regrowth to happen, it’s very unlikely that the areas will be as hairy as they were before treatment. If you’d like to undergo laser hair removal again after pregnancy, consult with a board certified provider on when it’s safe to do so.
