With a month to go until your wedding day, now is the time to head to your board certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon’s office for Botox® and filler (if you’re interested, of course!). It is also a chance to undergo the last of your minimally invasive, complexion-perfecting skincare treatments that provide more of a boost than your average facial. 

## **Neurotoxin Injections**
Like any cosmetic procedure, [neurotoxin injections](https://aedit.com/aedition/comparing-neurotoxin-botulinum-type-a-injections-botox-dysport-jeuveau-xeomin) like Botox®, Dysport®, Jeuveau®, and Xeomin® are not necessary. But they have become an increasingly popular addition to skincare routines for brides- and grooms-to-be. So-called ‘[Botox Parties](https://newyork.cbslocal.com/2017/08/22/bridesmaids-get-botox/)’ have become a part of the bachelor and bachelorette weekend festivities for some wedding parties ahead of the big day. 

For the uninitiated, Botox® and the like are an injectable form of botulinum toxin type A that is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the temporary improvement of moderate to severe glabellar (a.k.a. frown) lines, horizontal forehead lines, and crow’s feet. As we mentioned in previous timelines, [first-time neurotoxin patients](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-before-getting-botox-for-the-first-time) should sit down for a consultation with a board certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon to ensure you share a similar aesthetic and to confirm the wrinkle reducer is the right treatment option for your concerns.

If you’ve never had a Botox® injection before, one month before your wedding is not the time to start. Unlike dermal fillers (more on that below!), there is no way to reverse the procedure. New patients should begin injections at least three to six months prior walking down the aisle to give the neurotoxin plenty of time to wear off. But, if you have a standing quarterly Botox® appointment with your derm, four weeks before the big day is the ideal time for a touch up.

There’s a reason they call Botox® a ‘lunchtime procedure.’ The injections themselves last all of 15 minutes — and that includes post-op icing. While the appointment might be quick, the results require patience. Neurotoxins take three to five days to kick in, with full results at the two-week mark. At that point, you’ll still have two weeks to go until your wedding to get comfortable with your skin and facial expressions. Most patients enjoy the wrinkle reducing benefits for three to four months (i.e. well after you return from your honeymoon). 


## **Dermal Filler**
Not to be confused with neurotoxins, [soft tissue fillers](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-dermal-fillers) made of hyaluronic acid (HA), calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA), and polylactic acid (PLA), to name a few, are injected into the skin to fill out wrinkles and add or restore volume. Popular uses include plumping up the lips, erasing smile lines, smoothing under-eye bags, defining the cheekbones, and filling out the temples. 

In our [one-year](https://aedit.com/aedition/wedding-beauty-timeline-cosmetic-surgery-procedures-one-year-in-advance) and [six-month timelines](https://aedit.com/aedition/wedding-beauty-timeline-cosmetic-surgery-procedures-6-months-before), we talked about giving dermal fillers and neurotoxin injections a test run. The benefit of starting early is that you have ample time to find a board certified provider that understands your aesthetic goals. And, since HA fillers like Juvederm®, Belotero®, and Restylane® can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, starting in advance allows you time to correct or remove any results you are unhappy with.

But, for long-time filler fans, a final appointment the month before the wedding is the perfect time for a touch up. You will have enough time to heal from any bruising or swelling that the injections might cause. ## **Professional Skincare Treatments**
Consider this the last call for professional skincare services. While we don’t recommend trying anything for the first time at this point in the process, patients who began a multi-session chemical peel, laser, microneedling, or facial regimen should be nearing the end of their treatment plan.

As we discussed in our [six-month timeline](https://aedit.com/aedition/wedding-beauty-timeline-cosmetic-surgery-procedures-6-months-before), light chemical peels and non-ablative laser treatments are good options for those looking to correct hyperpigmentation (think: acne scars, sun damage, and dark spots), smooth fine lines and wrinkles, and improve radiance. In an age when time is of the essence, the idea of getting glowing skin in an hour or less sounds ideal. For anyone who knows anything about skincare, however, it may also sound too good to be true. Cleansing, hydrating, and rejuvenating, the [HydraFacial®](https://aedit.com/procedure/hydrafacial) is said to address a plethora of skin concerns in a matter of minutes. But does it really?

As a beauty editor with a solid skincare routine that’s kept my complexion clear, I was intrigued to try the multi-step hydradermabrasion treatment that is beloved by dermatologists and celebrities alike. While I’ve tried facial massages, [LED light therapy](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-benefits-of-light-therapy), and even ayurvedic cleansing, I’ve never experienced the popular procedure. Going in, I knew I would enjoy an hour away from the hustle and bustle of life in Manhattan. But, with very few personal skincare concerns, would a HydraFacial® create a noticeable, long-lasting improvement? Spoiler alert: it did.

## **What Is a HydraFacial®?**

The entire HydraFacial® process takes less than an hour. Despite the fact that a deep exfoliation is involved, the treatment is nothing short of relaxing. In fact, the gentle, pore-by-pore suctioning is as calming as it is satisfying. But there is more to a HydraFacial® than the vacuum-like device. Here’s a breakdown of the entire process:

1. **Cleanse**: The skin is cleansed and prepped for treatment. 
2. **Peel**: A peel composed of 30 percent glycolic acid and 1.5 percent salicylic acid is applied to the skin to lightly regenerate the top layer of skin a la the type of superficial chemical peel you would normally expect at a doctor’s office. 
3. **Extract**: Dead skin cells are removed and the pores are thoroughly cleansed during the extraction phase. So, does the vacuum hurt like a traditional extraction does? The short answer is no, though there is a subtle sensation that I found to be non-abrasive and, actually, quite enjoyable. 
4. **Fuse with Antioxidants**: Fusing is not as scary as it sounds. To take full advantage of the detoxed skin, targeted, proprietary skin solutions in the form of serums and boosters are applied to the complexion to enhance the post-facial glow. 

Though not an official step, my visit concluded with a slightly disturbing though highly satisfying visual component: a look at all the debris my face had been stockpiling. After examining the murky water, I knew that no matter how fool-proof I considered my skincare routine to be, there was no substitute for a professional treatment.

When it comes to eyebrows, my motto is: Don’t touch them. In fact, I might be the only woman in the world to never go through an over-tweezing phase — a beauty accomplishment that I am quite proud of.

As someone not born with the dark, bushy brows that perfectly frame Cara Delevigne’s face (to the contrary, mine are thin, light, and a little sparse), I avoid most interference except for the daily use of a pigmented pencil that adds color and definition. So, when I heard about an eyebrow treatment that is said to have the ability to turn anyone’s brows into Delevigne-worthy arches, I was skeptical but intrigued. Perhaps it was time to outsource my eternal desire for a beautifully abundant brow, for as my mother always says: “Good brows don’t happen by chance. They happen by appointment.” 

Promising arches that look thicker, glossier, and perpetually kempt, brow lamination is a needle-free alternative to [microblading](https://aedit.com/procedure/microblading) that produces less permanent results. With an approach to brow maintenance that could be described as nearly ascetic, my virgin brows were dreaming of a Cindy Crawford-esque transformation, and brow lamination seemed like a good first step toward addressing my desire for a fuller brow — without the commitment of something like microblading.

## **What is Brow Lamination?**
Similar to a perm, brow lamination uses a non-invasive chemical processing treatment to set and direct brow hairs into a more desirable shape. The process, which is relatively quick and pain-free, is beneficial for those looking to maximize the impact of their natural brows. The final results are glossy and shapely brows that are expected to last between six to eight weeks with little to no upkeep.

According to Jaimineey Patel, head of training at [Blink Brow Bar](https://bbb-london.com/), brow lamentation is suitable for all hair types, though “customers with unruly or sparse brows will definitely see the biggest difference,” she says. Since my brows are sparse, the treatment feels tailor-made for me.

## **The Brow Lamination Process** 
The brow lamination process begins at least 24 hours before the treatment itself with a pre-appointment allergy test (à la [eyelash extensions](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-get-eyelash-extensions)). Assuming clients don’t have a reaction, the appointment itself lasts an hour (at most) and involves a technician applying chemical solutions to tame the brow hair before molding them into the desired shape.

### **Step 1: The Patch Test**

At least 24 hours before the appointment, a quick (think: less than a minute) allergy test needs to be administered for safety. Since the treatment requires a series of chemical solutions be applied to the skin, the patch test (usually performed behind the ear) helps to ensure the application process will not cause any ill effects. The patch test proved I was not allergic and, therefore, one step closer to coming for Keira Knightley’s brow crown. 

### **Step 2: Apply the Brow Adhesive**

Once at the actual appointment arrived, I laid back into the reclining chair and let the technician examine what miracles she could create. “Firstly, a brow adhesive is used to secure the brow hairs in an upward direction to the desired brow style,” Patel shares. The step takes approximately 15 minutes and includes a subtle poking sensation as each brow hair is separated to lay in its new place. Unlike lash extensions, which requires patients to keep their eyes closed, the brow lamination process allowed me to multitask on my phone while the technician meticulously brushed out each hair. 

### **Step 3: Style the Brow Hair**

After the first brow adhesive was wiped off, my brows had a wind-swept appearance that initially startled me. Upon further review, seeing each hair individually spread actually out got me more excited for the final result. “A styling lotion is used to relax the hair cuticle, so the brow hairs can be molded to the determined brow shape,” Patel explains. Prior to applying the lotion, my technician warned that there might be a slight burning sensation, but it is to be expected.

### **Step 4: Set the Brow Hair**

Just as I was getting comfortable and more relaxed, the process was nearly coming to an end and we were onto step four. “We apply a fixing lotion to structure the brow hairs and set them into the new position,” says Patel 

### **Step 5: Finishing Touches**

Finally, a keratin treatment is applied to hydrate the brow hair. “The keratin serum helps close and smooth down the hair cuticle, which restores, conditions, and nourishes the hairs,” Patel says. Since keratin has long been a go-to for smoothing and straightening locks, this step felt particularly apropos. 

### **Additional Treatments** 
Brow lamination yields some seriously volumizing results that many clients are happy with as is. But, for those of us with fair skin and light hair or for anyone who likes the appearance of a darker brow, a tinting treatment may also be needed for best results. 

“We recommend having a brow shape and tint alongside,” Patel says. “The brow shape will add definition to the brows and structure your face, while a tint will give the illusion of extra thickness and length.” It should be noted that eyebrow tinting also requires a patch test, but it can be done at the same time as the patch test for the lamination chemical solutions.

I opted for the brow tint, which was done in conjunction with the treatment and only added an extra 15 minutes to the already brisk 45-minute lamination process. 

## **The Results**
As someone who loves instantaneous results but has little time to spare, the first gaze at my new brows got my heart racing. I never knew how much I needed feathered, satin-smooth eyebrows — or how quickly I could achieve them. The combined lamination and tinting treatment took about an hour, and I was able to stroll out with ease – save for catching a glimpse in the closest mirror to admire the technician’s magical work and hope someone would confuse me for Brooke Shields.

With each hair laid meticulously in a swept-up style, the results were beyond anything I could’ve created myself with a brow gel and pencil. Perfectly framing my peepers, this upgrade immediately made my eyes pop more, in addition to changing the shape of my face. It simultaneously felt like my eyebrows had doubled in size and that I had a [brow lift](https://aedit.com/aedition/theres-more-to-a-brow-lift-than-meets-the-eye). 

For the first 24 hours post-laminating and tinting, all tampering is off limits. This means:

- No washing
- No brushing
- No touching 

After the first full day, it was time for the moment of truth. For once, my eyebrows didn’t disappear after I washed my face, and they remained pretty well fixed in the new, spread out shape they’d been assigned. But all good things must come to an end. After a few weeks — even with the benefit of the tinting — I slowly felt the need to fill in my brows creep back in, as my penchant for a dark arch returned. Still, the new shape was perfect for my laissez-faire approach to brow maintenance, in which I just let them do what they want to do and fill in the blanks. I suppose I will just have to accept that my brow hair may never be as dark and bushy as Eugene Levy’s – though maybe that’s for the best.

What brow lamination offers is quite simple: A non-invasive way to coax your unruly, coarse, or sparse eyebrows into a more voluminous, feathered shape with lots of shine. While most of us were reveling in the festivities of the holiday season, A-listers were hard at work preparing their bodies and faces for the most publicized events of the year.

Appearing on camera comes with perpetual scrutiny and with screens more high-def than ever, maintaining a clear complexion during the stress of awards season is often a priority for celebs. While we probably won’t find ourselves at the Oscars any time soon, the rules of the red carpet are transferable. Here, The AEDITION breaks down the cosmetic procedures and skin treatments that will have your complexion in tip-top share for any event. 

## **The Areas of Concern Before a Red Carpet Appearance**
Stars, they’re just like us! At least when it comes to skin concerns that is. Still prone to breakouts, age spots, and dry skin – especially with their hectic travel schedules – celebrities need to give their skin some TLC, too. 

New York-based board certified dermatologist [Julie Russak, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/jason-emer-md-722), notes that Hollywood’s elite can succumb to “acne issues, blackhead, pustules, stress and hormonal breakouts, pigmentation and discoloration in the skin, and dry or dehydrated skin.” So, even though celebrities might have access to the best of the best, they can’t escape the natural effects of being, well, human.

As a Hollywood-based board certified dermatologist, [Jason Emer, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/jason-emer-md-722), knows this all too well. “Many of my VIP patients are wanting their skin to look flawless on camera, especially in today’s high-def world,” Dr. Emer explains. “We address hyperpigmentation, discoloration caused by sun damage or age, melasma, and acne scars with a carefully curated combo of treatments.”

So, what can really be done in a short period of time that will produce great results without you looking ‘done’? Whether there’s a red carpet in your future or you have a wedding or special occasion on the calendar, these are the minimally invasive treatments dermatologists recommend if you’re looking for a quick skin boost.

### **1. Neurotoxin Injections**
By and large one of the most well-known anti-aging treatments for a youthful look, [Botox® and its competitors](https://aedit.com/aedition/comparing-neurotoxin-botulinum-type-a-injections-botox-dysport-jeuveau-xeomin) work to reduce the appearance of wrinkles by paralyzing the underlying muscles. According to board certified dermatologist [Nikhil Dhingra, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/nikhil-dhingra-md-17376), of Manhattan’s at Spring Street Dermatology, the best timeline for neurotoxin injections is a month prior to your event. “Botox® takes a full two weeks to take on its full form,” he shares. “Any touch-ups needed at that two-week mark take at least one to two weeks to show as well, so aim for a month prior to an event.” Another note: the results are temporary. Injections need to be redone every three to four months.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ [2018 Plastic Surgery Statistics Report](https://www.plasticsurgery.org/documents/News/Statistics/2018/cosmetic-procedure-trends-2018.pdf), the market grew 163 percent between 2000 and 2018, and the trend is expected to continue tracking upward. 

Among the go-to treatments? Injectables (think: [Botox®](https://aedit.com/procedure/botox-facial) and filler) and non-invasive fat reduction, which just so happen to be among the best ways to non-surgically lift, firm, plump, and contour the face and neck. Whether you are looking to combat visual signs of aging like volume loss, fine lines and wrinkles, and sagging or are simply looking to further define your facial features, there is an array of non-invasive cosmetic procedures that can reshape the face — sans surgery.

## __Dermal Filler__
Fillers aren’t just for plumping your pout. “Dermal fillers can be placed on the bone and within the muscle of the chin to augment its shape and projection,” explains board certified dermatologist [Rita Linkner, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/rita-linkner-md-8907), of New York’s Spring Street Dermatology. “The chin is oftentimes forgotten but adds so much to facial structure. A syringe of filler in this delicate area goes such a long way.”

Using filler to augment the chin is a non-surgical solution to refine a facial feature that previously would have required a more invasive cosmetic procedure — like a [facial implant](https://aedit.com/procedure/alloplastic-chin-implant) — to correct. So-called [liquid rhinoplasties](https://aedit.com/procedure/liquid-rhinoplasty) and [chemical brow lifts](https://aedit.com/procedure/chemical-brow-lift) are other common examples of filler being used to mimic the effects of traditional plastic surgery.

One key difference, however, between non-surgical cosmetic procedures and their surgical counterparts is the level of permanence. The results of dermal fillers, while immediate, last an average of six months to two years (depending on the region being treated) compared to the much longer lifespan of surgical procedures. But the downtime associated with filler is minimal, with only about a week (or less) of minor redness, swelling, or bruising.

## __Botulinum Toxin Type A Injections__ 
Easily confused with dermal filler, botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) injections (read: Botox® and its competitors) work in an entirely different way. While dermal filler quite literally fills in the hollows of the face to restore volume and fullness, [BoNT-A injectables](https://aedit.com/aedition/comparing-neurotoxin-botulinum-type-a-injections-botox-dysport-jeuveau-xeomin) like Botox®, Dysport®, Jeuveau®, and Xeomin® are FDA approved to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles caused by repeated facial expressions (think: frowning, squinting, smiling, and the like) by injecting it into the muscles underlying the affected area. But their usefulness goes far beyond smoothing wrinkles.  

BoNT-A injections can be used to complement cosmetic surgery procedures like [blepharoplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/upper-eyelid-blepharoplasty) (a.k.a. eyelid surgery) or [brow lifts](https://aedit.com/procedure/traditional-midbrow-lift) and can be strategically injected to refine the face shape or define facial features. Botox® and the like can be used to slim out a round face, lift the corners of the mouth, and even soften the jawline (ideal for teeth grinders or those lacking definition).

“I inject a neurotoxin into the masseter muscle to slim the face very commonly,” says Dr. Linkner. “It turns a square-shaped face into a more aesthetically pleasing oval. Studies have been done that show the jawbone itself slims on CT scans with toxin use in the masseters. As the muscles exert less pressure on the bone, the osteoclasts start to reshape the bone itself.”

Like dermal fillers, BoNT-A injections are temporary. Once injected, the results can take up to a week to kick in (patients may experience minor bruising and pain at the injection site) and typically last around three to six months.

## __Kybella®__
Another player in the minimally invasive injectable game? [Kybella®](https://aedit.com/procedure/kybella).

A form of deoxycholic acid (i.e. the naturally occurring molecule that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat in the body), Kybella® is FDA approved to reduce fat under the chin and thus improve the contour of the neck. Off-label uses include breaking down stubborn fat deposits on the stomach and back and above the knees and elbows.

When deoxycholic acid is injected directly into the submental fat under the chin, the fat-storing adipose tissue is destroyed. Over time, the fat cells are removed from the treated area via the body’s natural metabolic processes.

The best thing about Kybella®? The results are permanent. Dr. Linkner says that the body metabolizes the destroyed adipocytes (fat cells) over the proceeding six to eight weeks. Unlike [liposuction](https://aedit.com/procedure/power-assisted-liposuction), the fat will not redistribute, but most patients will need multiple sessions (up to six), spaced at least a month apart to see the most optimal results. 

Additionally, there is a bit more downtime associated with Kybella® than, say, Botox® or dermal filler. “Expect a 36-hour period of swelling that truly peaks 12 hours post-procedure,” Dr. Linkner warns. “Bruising is common, so I give all my patients arnica post-Kybella.”

## __PDO Thread Lift__
While nothing can replace the long term lifting and firming benefits of a surgical [facelift](https://aedit.com/procedure/smas-facelift), thread lifts are a worthy non-surgical alternative. Ideal for patients looking for facial rejuvenation (especially as it relates to the lower face and jowls), the minimally invasive cosmetic procedure involves the subcutaneous placement of polydioxanone (PDO) sutures to lift sagging tissue.

Microneedling is also great for treating atrophic (a.k.a. depressed) scars, specifically those caused by acne. Severe teenage and adult acne can damage the skin, and, if the body produces too little or too much collagen during the healing process, the skin will scar. The micro-wounds caused by microneedling help trigger the body’s natural healing process, which can lead to the improved appearance of scars.

Dr. Brown likes to alternate microneedling with chemical peels (more on those below!) and recommends sessions every four to six weeks. Speaking of [chemical peels](hhttps://aedit.com/procedure/tca-peel), the treatment relies on — you guessed it — chemical exfoliators like alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids, trichloroacetic acid, and carbolic acid to slough off dead skin cells and rejuvenate the skin (think: smoothing fine lines and correcting mild to moderate hyperpigmentation). With both at-home and professional-strength options available, the potency can be tailored to a patient’s skin type and level of sensitivity. 

“Typical facials cleanse the skin and may offer a bit of exfoliation and hydration, however, chemical peels can take off the top few layers of dead skin resulting in a more dramatic change in the skin’s appearance,” says Dr. Brown. “In my experience, facials feel nice for a day or so, but the results of a chemical peel and/or microneedling will have more impact on the skin’s health.”

And while redness and swelling can occur for up to a week after the treatment, Dr. Brown says brighter skin and a more even complexion can “last months” when coupled with “proper at-home care and sun protection.”

“The sooner you prevent animation of the muscle, the sooner you prevent the permanent lines over time,” Dr. Brown explains. Botox® and its competitors are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to temporarily reduce the appearance of glabellar lines (a.k.a. frown lines), crow’s feet, and forehead lines (and they have many “off label” anti-aging uses as well). 

When injected into an area of concern, botulinum toxin type A temporarily paralyzes the muscles and, in turn, eases the formation of lines and wrinkles caused by repeated facial expressions (think: frowning, squinting, smiling) that utilize said muscles. Once the fine lines and wrinkles form, they are harder to correct, so starting preventative treatments early could lead to smoother skin down the line. 

Regardless of which brand injectable you choose, results take about a week to kick in and typically last three to six months. Bruising and pain at the injection site are common, and, in rare cases, botulism-like symptoms (trouble breathing and swallowing, muscle weakness, and slurred speech) may occur.

## __Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery__
If you have more invasive procedures on the brain, your twenties may be the time to move ahead with them. With facial features fully developed and the body likely in peak health, patients in their twenties may find that they recover faster and bounce back better after reconstructive or cosmetic surgeries during this decade.

The only time I think it is okay to have breast surgery first is if the patient is younger and not planning children for many years ahead,” Dr. Brown says. “In that situation, I think it is okay to have a procedure if you feel that doing so is very important to you in the present moment in life. Just realize you possibly will need revisions after children.”

In general, Dr. Brown advises women to hold off on larger surgical procedures (particularly related to the breasts) until after childbirth because pregnancy can cause weight and volume fluctuations that directly affect the quality of skin. 

## __At-Home Care__
While there are plenty of procedures that’ll keep your complexion in tip-top shape, not every treatment option requires a trip to the doctor’s office. There are plenty of lifestyle factors that will promote skin health. 

It goes without saying that eating a well-balanced diet, drinking plenty of water, limiting alcohol consumption, not smoking, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly are important practices at any point in life, but it should be noted that not embracing those healthy habits from a young age can lead to premature aging. 

Additionally, there is no better time than the present to adopt a skincare routine. Dr. Brown recommends a four-step regimen that includes a cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen, and retinol. The latter is a jack of all trades that can treat everything from acne to wrinkles, though it may require a bit of patience to work up a tolerance. When it comes to sunscreen, you should be wearing SPF 30 at a minimum. Just as brands like Band-Aid have become synonymous with adhesive bandages, Kleenex with tissues, and Wite-Out with correction fluid, “Botox” has been the colloquial term for botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) injections since it was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the temporary improvement of moderate to severe glabellar lines (i.e. the frown lines between the eyebrows) in April 2002. 

But Allergan’s wrinkle smoother isn’t the only BoNT-A injection in town. There is a quartet of cosmetic neurotoxins on the market — [Botox®](https://aedit.com/procedure/botox-facial), Dysport®, Jeuveau®, and Xeomin® — that each contain the same active ingredient (BoNT-A) and is FDA approved to treat the same aesthetic concerns. 

So, how do you differentiate between the four? The AEDITION is here to help. 

## **How Botulinum Toxin Type A Injections Work**
Before we get into nitpicking the differences between Botox®, Dysport®, Jeuveau®, and Xeomin®, it’s important to understand what they are and how they work. 

For starters, botulinum toxin type A is the primary active ingredient in each product. And, while BoNT is considered one of the strongest and most lethal toxins discovered to date, small doses of the neuromodulator have the ability to temporarily paralyze muscles for cosmetic effect. 

In aesthetic medicine, botulinum toxin is used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles caused by [facial](https://aedit.com/procedure/botox-for-dimpled-chin) expressions (think: frowning, squinting, smiling, and the like) by injecting it into the muscles underlying the affected area. In turn, the lack of muscle contraction prevents the face from forming lines and wrinkles.

The result? Smoother skin for three to four months (or until it wears off). 

## **Comparing BoNT-A Injections** 
Now that you know what Botox®, Dysport®, Jeuveau®, and Xeomin® have in common, it’s time to understand what makes them unique — no matter how subtle the distinctions might be. 

“For the average patient, there is no difference between each of the products,” says [Jonathan Cabin, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/jonathan-cabin-md-956), a facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon at the Center for Advanced Facial Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills. “All of the products last a similar amount of time, and they all provide similar results.” 

Yes, the comparison is, essentially, apples to apples. But, as any Granny Smith apple fan knows, there is a difference between the tart green ones and, say, a McIntosh. The same logic applies to botulinum toxin injections. 

First and foremost, the four injectables are made by different manufacturers, which leads to different costs, potencies, and formulations. While the active ingredient in each product is botulinum toxin type A, some also feature protein blends that may affect the diffusion and efficacy of the injection. Such subtleties are why it is important to find a provider who is well versed in the market. 

“Dosage is slightly different for each of the products and the results they offer are subtly different,” Dr. Cabin, who prefers Botox®, shares. “The most important factor is to find a practitioner who is a very experienced injector and is confident using the product you wish to have injected.”

According to the [American Society of Plastic Surgeons](https://www.plasticsurgery.org/cosmetic-procedures/botulinum-toxin/safety), the most common side effects of any botulinum toxin injectable are bruising and pain at the injection site, flu-like symptoms, headache, nausea, redness, and temporary facial drooping. While rare, it is possible that the toxin may spread beyond the treatment area, which could lead to botulism-like symptoms including trouble breathing and swallowing, muscle weakness, and slurred speech. 

If you’re one of the 7.5 million Americans who received a wrinkle-relaxing injection in 2018 or are looking to join the ranks, here’s everything you need to know about the four FDA-approved BoNT injectables on the market.

### **Botox®** 

- **FDA Approval**: The OG was first approved by the FDA as a temporary aesthetic treatment to improve the appearance of frown lines between the eyebrows in April 2002. It has since been cleared to treat forehead lines and crow’s feet, too (in addition to all its "off label" uses). 

- **The Skinny**: Botox®, or onabotulinumtoxinA, is a product of Irish drugmaker Allergan, and it currently holds an estimated 80 percent of the BoNT-A injection market. With a molecular weight of 900 kDa, Allergan formulates botulinum toxin type A with protective proteins that a subset of patients may develop an antibody against over time, lessening the effectiveness of the treatment. The inactive ingredients in Botox® include human albumin (i.e. plasma proteins) and sodium chloride. There is also a therapeutic version of product that can be used to treat medical conditions like migraines, excessive sweating, and eye spasms (to name a few), but, as it relates to aesthetics, the average cost per unit is around $6 to the doctor and the number of units injected will depend on the area being treated. 

- **The Results**: Botox® is effective but not permanent. It takes about three to five days post-treatment for the results to appear (though it can take up to two weeks for the final effect to be visible), and it lasts about three to four months in most patients. The longevity depends on everything from the way a patient’s body metabolizes the product to the area being treated.

### **Dysport®**

- **FDA Approval**: Dysport® was first approved to treat frown lines in April 2009, and, like Botox®, also has therapeutic uses to calm muscle spasticity.

- **The Skinny**: A product of Medicis Pharmaceutical, Dysport® (a.k.a. abobotulinumtoxinA) is slightly less potent than Botox® due to its molecular weight. While both have the same 150 kDa of BoNT-A at their core, the weight of the protective proteins in Dysport® are not uniform like those in Botox®. As a result, Dysport® has a higher rate of diffusion, which makes it ideal for treating larger areas (think: foreheads) — though more product may be needed to achieve results. Nonetheless, the cost is generally comparable to Botox®. Like Botox®, it is formulated with human albumin, and Dysport® also contains lactose and cow’s milk protein — making it unsuitable for patients with milk allergies. 

- **The Results**: While the effects of Dysport® may show up sooner (within 24 hours) than Botox®, some studies have shown that they may not last as long. The shorter lifespan could make it a good choice for patients who are unsure about whether they will like the results of BoNT-A injections. 

### **Jeuveau®** 

- **FDA Approval**: The new kid on the block was approved exclusively for cosmetic use in February 2019. 

- **The Skinny**: You may recall the [splashy launch party](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/15/health/evolus-wrinkles-toxin-jeuveau.html) earlier this year that branded Jeuveau® (i.e. prabotulinumtoxinA) as “#NEWTOX.” Maker Evolus is hoping the newbie will prove to be a worthy competitor to Botox®, as they both carry a molecular weight of 900 kDa, are formulated with human albumin and sodium chloride, and offer similar results. But, with a price point 20 to 30 percent less than Botox® and marketing campaigns largely targeted at millennials, it would appear Jeuveau® is seeking to carve out its own patient niche. 

- **The Results**: Clinical data is limited due to the newness of the product, but trials have shown Jeuveau® to have a similar safety and efficacy profile to Botox®. Patients generally begin to see results in three to five days, and they last for three to six months.

### **Xeomin®** 

- **FDA Approval**: Xeomin® was approved by the FDA for the treatment of frown lines in July 2011 (and it has also been medically approved to correct muscle spasticity and, most recently, excessive drooling). 

- **The Skinny**: Merz-made Xeomin® (a.k.a. incobotulinumtoxinA) is unique in that it does not blend BoNT-A with complexing proteins (though inactive ingredients include human albumin and sucrose). As a result, the neurotoxin doesn’t need to be refrigerated and it may be slightly more comfortable to have injected because it is stored at room temperature. Xeomin® generally costs about the same as Botox® and Dysport® — but fewer units may be needed to achieve the desired result. Patients who show signs of resistance to Botox® and Dysport® may find success with Xeomin® due to the purified state of BoNT-A. 

-**The Results**: Results from Xeomin® injections take five to seven days to become visible and last a similar amount of time to Botox®, Dysport®, and Jeuveau®.

## **The Takeaway**
As you can see, each of the four neurotoxins have similar safety and efficacy profiles, but subtle differences do exist that may make one a better option for your particular needs. We’ve all entertained some version of the same fantasy: skipping the gym in favor of a Netflix marathon while still losing weight. Well, what was once dismissed as a daydream is increasingly becoming a reality. Recent advances combined with new applications of existing technology have turned non-surgical body contouring into big business, providing both plastic surgeons and patients with a range of alternatives to traditional subcutaneous [fat removal](https://aedit.com/procedure/power-assisted-liposuction). While surgeons universally agree there is still no substitute for [liposuction surgery](https://aedit.com/procedure/tumescent-liposuction), several technologies do deliver subtle results with significantly less recovery time.

Let’s be clear: non-invasive body contouring treatments are not a substitute for significant weight loss or maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle. According to board certified Beverly Hills plastic surgeon [Payman Danielpour, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/payman-danielpour-md-797), good candidates for these cosmetic fat reduction treatments are “those who diet and exercise but who have resistant fat deposits. If they’re in shape, a non-invasive option is fantastic.” On the other hand, he says, “Sometimes I end up telling patients that they’re not going to get the results they’re looking for. If they are overweight or they have loose skin from losing weight, then surgery is the more realistic option. It all depends on the amount of fat being targeted and their goals. Each individual is different.”

Still, plenty of people fed up with their stubborn fat pockets are flocking to doctor’s offices and treatment centers for these body ‘tweakments’. They also pair well with other non-invasive treatments and/or surgical procedures. “We have clients who come in for CoolSculpting® on their love handles and we treat their six-pack with EMSculpt® as well,” says Dr. Danielpour. Multitasking frequently extends to facial treatments, too. “We’ll do [HydraFacials®](https://aedit.com/procedure/hydrafacial) while [body contouring](https://aedit.com/procedure/abdominoplasty), or [PRP microneedling](https://aedit.com/procedure/microneedling-with-prp)," he says. "The beauty of this is they just walk right out afterwards. The discomfort that you have with surgical treatment is far more than doing a non-invasive procedure.”

## **Freeze It**

Since 2010, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved [CoolSculpting®](https://aedit.com/procedure/cool-sculpting) and it has been helping patients eliminate excess fat from the belly, flanks, thighs, back, upper arms, and most recently, double chin. The machine, which requires “enough fat to pinch,” according to Dr. Danielpour, works by suctioning the skin that surrounds the fat cells, then cooling the area until the fat cells freeze and die – a process known as cryolipolysis. “In terms of non-surgical fat reduction, there is nothing better than CoolSculpting® on the market," he says. "You can take the probes and put them just about anywhere on the body, and on average, 25 percent of the fat will be gone in three months.” 

### **The Skinny**

- **Cost Per Session:** $750 per area per treatment. “The love handles are two areas,” says Dr. Danielpour. 

- **Treatment Sessions Required:** According to Dr. Danielpour, “Most people require two sessions per area.”

- **Duration:** About 30 minutes to an hour per area.

- **Pain/Discomfort:** Patients with sensitive skin may be uncomfortable as the machine numbs the skin, but after that, there is usually no pain. In Dr. Danielpour’s experience, “Sometimes there can be a little bit of nerve pain that will resolve in a couple of weeks," but it's usually temporary.

- **Downtime/Side Effects:** None.

- **Results:** Noticeable changes as soon as a few weeks; full results develop over two to six months as the body flushes out the dead fat cells. 

- **Fat Reduction:** According to company data and Dr. Danielpour’s estimates, around 25 percent.

- **Muscle Increase:** None.

- **FDA-Approved:** Yes.

- **Risks:** Temporary nerve damage that generally resolves in a matter of weeks, as well as something called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH) – a phenomenon that actually causes the fat cells to grow and harden in response to the extreme cold. Also known as the “stick of butter” effect for its rectangular resemblance to the machine’s suction probe, the complication occurs in fewer than one percent of CoolSculpting® cases. Fortunately, the problem is completely solvable, according to Dr. Danielpour. “I’ve never had a case of it in my practice, but I was referred to a patient who had it. I performed liposuction, and the patient was fine," he says.

- **Maintenance:** None.

### **What It's Like**

“I was concerned about stubborn fat on my flanks and lower abdomen,” says Athena, who got CoolSculpting® from Dr. Danielpour. The treatment itself was “very cold, but tolerable. The cold feeling eventually subsided and became numb," she says. "The two-minute massage of the treatment area immediately afterward was not very comfortable. It feels tender and numb, almost as if your skin is thawing out.” Athena was able to resume normal activities right away, including a workout the next day, in spite of being slightly sore in the treatment area. She began to see results in about six weeks, “although full results did not take effect until the three month mark.” Athena was so pleased with her initial CoolSculpting® results that she opted to re-treat the same area as well as other areas like her flanks and inner thighs. "CoolSculpting® helped the bulge on my lower abdomen decrease, where now my abdomen is almost completely flat,” she says. 

## **Melt It**

Promising shorter treatment times with similar results as Coolsculpting®, Cynosure's [SculpSure®](https://aedit.com/procedure/sculpsure) eliminates stubborn pockets of pudge by selectively heating fat cells through controlled, low-level laser energy. The body contouring treatment is currently approved by the FDA to address excess fat found in the abdomen, flanks, back, inner and outer thighs, and under the chin. According to company data, each 25-minute treatment permanently destroys up to 24 percent of targeted fat cells. The body naturally expels the dead fat cells through the lymphatic system over the course of six to 12 weeks.

### **The Skinny**

- **Cost Per Session:** On average, $400 per panel per treatment. Most patients require a maximum of four panels to treat the abdominal area, for an average total of about $1,600 for that area.

- **Treatment Sessions Required:** According to SculpSure®’s website, patients generally benefit the  most from a series of treatments.

- **Duration:** About 25 minutes per area.

- **Pain/Discomfort:** Most patients experience a strong warming sensation followed by periods of cooling. Because everyone’s pain tolerance is different, mild to moderate discomfort has been reported.

- **Downtime/Side Effects:** There are no activity restrictions, though patients have reported mild swelling and tenderness in the treated area for a couple of days. 

- **Results:** Full results develop over six to12 weeks as the body expels the dead fat cells. 

- **Fat Reduction:** According to company data, around 24 percent.

- **Muscle Increase:** None.

- **FDA-Approved:** Yes.

- **Risks:** While there are no known risks or complications, anyone pregnant should not use the technology.

- **Maintenance:** None.

## **Work It**

“We’re very excited about EMSculpt®,” says Dr. Danielpour. “It’s the only technology that builds muscle using a high intensity focused electromagnetic field, which induces powerful muscle contractions that you can’t do yourself.” FDA-approved for use in the abdominal and gluteal areas, one session with this machine essentially provides more crunches and squats than humanly possible. “It’s like doing 20,000 situps in 30 minutes or more squats than you could ever imagine.” Those intense repetitions, known as “supramaximal” muscle contractions, build muscle and induce lipolysis, or fat cell death. The machine has variable settings, which the provider controls according to the patient’s tolerance level. Four sessions over the course of a couple of weeks are purported to leave a relatively fit person looking like they’ve spent the last six months toiling in the gym. But like any workout regimen, this body contouring treatment requires regular maintenance: one session every three to six months is recommended to keep that sleek physique.

### **The Skinny**

- **Cost Per Session:** $1,000 per area.

- **Treatment Sessions Required:** Generally, four over the course of two to three weeks.
 
- **Duration:** About 30 minutes per session.
 
- **Pain/Discomfort:** While it’s not regarded as painful, the sensation has been described as a strange, slightly uncomfortable vibration by some. 
 
- **Downtime/Side Effects:** Mild muscle soreness afterward, similar to that of working out.
 
- **Results:** Patients describe feeling more toned immediately following treatment; full results develop within a few weeks following the fourth session.
 
- **Fat Reduction:** According to company data, 16 percent average.
 
- **Muscle Increase:** 19 percent on average.

- **FDA-Approved:** Yes.
 
- **Risks:** While there are no known risks or complications, anyone with metal in their body (like rods, pins, copper IUDs, pacemakers, etc.) cannot use the technology.

### **What It's Like**

CoolSculpting® patient Athena also opted for EMSculpt® sessions “to tone my abdomen in addition to reducing a small pocket of fat. You periodically feel your abdomen contract (I was able to tolerate it at the highest setting right away). The only uncomfortable part of this treatment was that the placement made it difficult for me to avoid feeling a contraction near my hip flexor.” Athena was able to resume her normal exercise routine the next day, with some slight soreness. “In comparison to CoolSculpting®, EMSculpt® treatment was definitely more comfortable. Immediately after the treatment, I saw a contraction of my abdomen with more definition of my muscles.” It took Athena close to two months to see the final results. “Initially, I did not think I saw any long term results. However, once I approached the eight-week mark, I noticed my abdomen felt tighter, and indeed the tiny pocket of fat on my lower abdomen had decreased.” Although she describes the results of EMSculpt® as significantly more subtle than that of CoolSculpting®, Athena recommends both, saying that EMSculpt® “provided extra definition to my abdomen.”

It’s important to remember that while these non-invasive body [contouring techniques](https://aedit.com/aedition/8-non-invasive-cosmetic-treatments-that-save-you-time) don’t carry the same risks associated with plastic surgery, they are medically regulated procedures best performed by highly trained professionals. When deciding which fat reduction method is right for you, it all comes down to the goals and expectations you discuss with your aesthetic surgeon. 

And before you get excited about having your cake and eating it, too, remember: although these non-surgical treatments really do get rid of fat for good, they’re not a free pass from living a sensible lifestyle. For optimal results, patients need to stick to a healthy regimen. Says Dr. Danielpour, “We’re all born with a set number of fat cells. These treatments actually kill the fat cells. In the treated area, you won’t be able to gain weight. The one thing I tell people is if you maintain your weight, you will see a very nice result. If you gain like 30 pounds, your arms and legs will get bigger. If you gain weight, all bets are off.”

Skin treatments are more than just surface level. Results depend on a variety of factors that extend far beyond skin type and one of those factors we don't often think about is the skin's color. During my first laser [hair removal](https://aedit.com/procedure/laser-hair-removal) consultation, I was told I would require additional treatments over a longer period of time due to my darker complexion. I was new to the world of cosmetic procedures and this was the first time I'd heard that my skin color could affect the outcome of my treatment. It turns out that our complexions play a significant role in the outcome of certain procedures, especially lasers. 

## **Why Different Complexions Need Specific Treatments**

The issue with lasers and some other technologies when treating different skin colors, and the reason behind adverse outcomes on darker complexions, is the amount of energy absorbed by the skin. Darker skin types absorb more energy and are thus prone to developing hyperpigmentation, irregular pigmentation, and hypopigmentation. Lighter skin types, on the other hand, don’t absorb energy and respond directly to the treatment.

For a long time the only options were a range of diode and alexandrite lasers, which still carry a risk of pigmentation changes. It’s only within the last 10 years that traceless cosmetic treatments have become available for darker complexions. We now have the choice of lasers and microneedling radiofrequency devices that can be used on darker skin types, with little to no side effects.

But even with the increasing amount of available treatments, people with darker complexions still need to search out doctors who know how to accurately treat darker skin tones. Board certified dermatologist [Jason Emer, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/jason-emer-md-722), acknowledges that some doctors don’t know how to successfully treat darker skin and aren't informed of the side effects certain cosmetic procedures have on dark skin types.

“There are a lot of doctors claiming that [Erbium lasers](https://aedit.com/procedure/ablative-erbium-laser), or what are called ‘cool lasers’, and even [CO2 lasers](https://aedit.com/procedure/ablative-co2-laser), are safe for darker skin types," he says. "These lasers are ablative and burn the skin – they’re very high risk. All ablative lasers, anything that’s delivering a lot of inflammation into the skin, should be avoided.”

Some doctors also use [IPL hair removal](https://aedit.com/procedure/ipl-for-unwanted-hair), which should be avoided when treating darker skin types, since it has a chance of developing both hypo and hyper pigmentation. Another laser that is damaging, and used regularly, is [Fraxel®](https://aedit.com/procedure/fraxel-repair). If used incorrectly, Fraxel can be extremely dangerous and cause rebound hyperpigmentation, burns, and damage to the overall skin texture.

### **Chemical Peel**

In the year leading up to my wedding, my skin prep was so militant, I left no pore unpurged and no wrinkle unfilled. Friends said I had the glow of a woman in love.
