We’ve heard of [lip filler](https://aedit.com/procedure/temporary-lip-fillers), [cheek filler](https://aedit.com/procedure/cheek-augmentation-with-fillers), and even [hand filler](https://aedit.com/procedure/hand-rejuvenation-with-dermal-fillers), but it wasn’t until recently that the notion of foot filler crossed our desks. Just because it may not enjoy the same notoriety, however, does not mean it lacks a fan base. “A fair number of people do it,” says [Darren Smith, MD](https://www.darrensmithmd.com/), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in New York City. “It just doesn’t come up in conversation.” 

To change that, we spoke to two physicians familiar with foot injections — which, keep in mind, isn’t necessarily all dermatologists or plastic surgeons — to learn more about the benefits of injecting filler into the feet for both cosmetic and functional benefits.

## **The Aesthetic Benefits of Foot Filler**
[Dermal fillers](https://aedit.com/procedure/dermal-filler-and-injectable-solutions) can be used to shape features from head to toe – quite literally. The same fillers you put in your face to restore lost volume and contour can be injected into your feet for both cosmetic and functional purposes, Dr. Smith says.

If aesthetics are your concern, you’re likely going to be treating the [tops of the feet](https://aedit.com/aedition/cosmetic-treatments-procedures-for-feet-nails-toes). “Loss of volume in many different parts of the body connotes aging, and the feet are no different,” Dr. Smith explains. “Some people think their veins are too visible or their tendons are too visible.” While this is a natural part of the aging process for many, it can also be exacerbated by certain otherwise healthy lifestyle habits. It’s fairly common for people who work out regularly to lose fat on their feet (sadly, your running regimen doesn’t just make you choose between your ass and your face), which can make tendons appear more visible over time. 

Similar to using filler to rejuvenate [aging hands](https://aedit.com/aedition/aesthetic-treatments-for-aging-hands), injecting hyaluronic acid (HA)-based fillers, such as [Juvéderm®](https://aedit.com/procedure/juvederm) or [Belotero®](https://aedit.com/procedure/belotero), into the top of the foot can camouflage bulging veins or tendons and add volume. As with most HA filler injections, the results last six to nine months before it’s time for a touch up.

## **The Functional Benefits of Foot Filler**
Sure, cosmetic foot filler can be a confidence-booster for those of us who are insecure about our feet. But the real game-changing use of injectables is functional. [Neil Sadick, MD](https://sadickdermatology.com/), a board certified cosmetic dermatologist in NYC and the founder of [Stride](https://getmystride.com/), recommends foot filler for patients — typically ones who’ve been referred by a podiatrist — who have pain when they walk. Think of the filler as an in-sole that you just so happen to be inserting into your own foot.

For patients who come to Dr. Sadick with plantar fasciitis, calluses around the foot, or thickening of the heels, filler can act as a cushion to the area and lead to less mechanical trauma from the regular act of walking on two feet. Dr. Smith agrees. “If you look at a cross section of a foot, you should have a nice little pillow of fat at the soul of your forefoot and the soul of your hind foot,” he shares. “There are people with genetic reasons or repetitive use reasons — some people think if you spend a lot of time walking around barefoot, for example — where those fat pads, which should serve as shock absorbers, atrophy or shrink over time.” 

In such cases, it becomes very painful to walk, and that’s where your injector can come in and help you recreate the natural cushion that has been lost. HA fillers can be employed for this purpose ([studies show](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6039379/) HA filler injections under the metatarsal heads can provide a “significant and long-lasting improvement” in treating metatarsalgia – a condition in which the ball of the foot becomes painful and inflamed – caused by wearing high heels), Dr. Smith likes biostimulatory injectables, like [Radiesse®](https://aedit.com/procedure/radiesse) and [Sculptra®](https://aedit.com/procedure/sculptra), for functional improvement. The former is made of calcium hydroxylapatite (CAHA) and the latter of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which both stimulate natural collagen production in the body for a longer-term effect.

Depending on the patient, fat grafting may also be an option. Dr. Smith says he works closely with podiatrists to address functional foot issues with [fat transfer](https://aedit.com/aedition/why-everyone-is-talking-about-fat-grafting), which involves liposuctioning fat from a donor site (think: the flanks or thighs), purifying it, and injecting it into the feet. After an initial reabsorption period, the transferred fat is permanent. 

## **The Takeaway**

Is Foot Filler Really A Thing?

While we all strive to be moisturized from the [tops of our heads](https://aedit.com/aedition/dermatologist-approved-daytime-moisturizers) to the [soles of our feet](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-get-a-medical-pedicure), our tootsies often prove to be a bit more challenging when it comes to hydration. The reason? We’re constantly putting pressure on our feet, which often leads the already dry skin on our heels and soles to harden and thicken. Dry and callused feet can also manifest as the result of hormonal changes, environmental factors, and even wearing closed shoes and socks.

The good news is that there is plenty you can do to soothe, soften, and save your tired feet, and we talked to a board certified foot and ankle surgeon and a licensed medical pedicurist for their expert advice. Here’s what you need to know about at-home foot care treatments.

## **1. Foot Soaks**
The skin on your feet is thicker than the skin on the rest of your body, and a soak can help soften dry skin before removing it. There are plenty of sumptuous soaks on the market, but simply submerging your feet for 20 minutes in warm soapy water will do the trick. The temperature of the water is actually the most important factor. Water that’s too cold won’t yield the results you need, while scorching hot water will be uncomfortable and unsafe. A water temperature between 92 degrees and 100 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal, but, if you don’t have a thermometer, you’ll know you hit the sweet spot when the water is toasty without stinging your feet. 

While soaking your feet in water is generally considered safe and effective, you should consult with your doctor if you have open wounds, sores, or suffer from dry feet as the result of a medical condition like diabetes. It’s also important to follow up a soak with a moisturizing lotion or balm (more on that below!) or you run the risk of exacerbating any dryness or cracking.

### **Paraffin Wax Treatments**
If you are looking for a more spa-like take on the classic soak, paraffin wax treatments replace water with a cozy wax bath. “Because it’s a natural emollient, wax adds moisture when applied to the skin, creating a barrier that helps your body retain the oils that it naturally produces,” says [William Spielfogel, DPM](https://www.hamiltonpodiatry.com/), chief of podiatry at Lenox Hill Hospital-Northwell Health and co-founder of [Dr.’s Remedy Nail Care](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.remedynails.com%2F). As he explains, paraffin wax is “often used as a physical therapy modality for painful joints in people with arthritis.” On the cosmetic end of the spectrum, “it can help to keep the skin moist and soft,” he adds.

Paraffin waxes are popular in [professional treatments](https://aedit.com/aedition/cosmetic-treatments-procedures-for-feet-nails-toes), but they’re also safe for at-home use, provided you follow the instructions on your device to the tee. Generally speaking, you’ll heat up wax in a small tub, then dip your feet (hands and/or elbows work, too) in the tub several times to create a thick layer of wax on your feet. You can then peel the wax off *or* prolong the nourishing benefits by wrapping your feet in plastic or towels and letting it set before removing it. 

Like water baths, Dr. Spielgofel says to make sure the temperature of the wax isn’t too hot; avoid areas with any open wounds; and, if you have an underlying condition like poor blood circulation or numbness in the hands or feet, consult with your doctor first. As for timing, Marcela Correa, a licensed medical pedicurist and founder of [Medi Pedi NYC](https://medipedinyc.com/), suggests a weekly paraffin treatment — especially during the winter months when skin is driest.

## **2. Manual Exfoliation**
The same way [manual (a.k.a. physical) exfoliation](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-ways-to-exfoliate-body-skincare-scrubs-dry-brush) can smooth the skin on your face and body, your feet can also benefit from a good scrub. However, there’s one thing to keep in mind before scouring your dry trotters: Be gentle! While we’re all guilty of grabbing a foot file and going to town, the skin on your feet is not as indestructible as it looks. Your movements should be vigorous but not rough, and, if you feel any pain or discomfort, slow down or stop completely. 

### **Pumice Stones**
Pumice stones are one of the most popular foot exfoliation methods, and the power of the small but mighty stone lies in the fact that pumice is a [type of volcanic rock](https://mineralseducationcoalition.org/minerals-database/pumice/) that is formed when frothy lava cools and hardens. Pumice stones should always be coupled with a foot soak, but many people don’t know that you also need to soak the actual pumice stone as well, as a dry pumice stone will be too abrasive for safe usage. 

After soaking your feet and the pumice stone, rub the stone across the soles of your feet in a light but firm manner, paying special attention to the areas that are experiencing the most dryness. This should take no more than five minutes, and you can repeat this process weekly. Afterwards, rinse and moisturize your feet, wash the pumice stone with soap and water, and then set it aside to dry completely. These last two steps are essential to avoid bacteria buildup on the stone. 

### **Foot Files**
Foot files are another great option for dry and/or callused feet. They can be made of metal, stainless steel, ceramic, or even glass, which make them less prone to bacteria concerns than pumice stones. Depending on the file, it may be able to be used on wet *or* dry skin, so be sure to read the directions first! 

To avoid damaging healthy skin, Correa says to always apply moisturizer first. From there, buff in the same direction as any cracks with a single-use foot file. She tells clients to do this once a week for best results.

## **3. Chemical Exfoliation**
When you think about [chemical exfoliation](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-at-home-chemical-peels-exfoliators) on the feet, you probably think of the ever-popular [Baby Foot](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.babyfoot.com%2Fstore%2Fproducts%2Fbaby-foot.html), which, full disclosure, I love. Foot peels often use a combination of [alpha hydroxy acids](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-topical-alpha-hydroxy-acids-in-skincare) and [beta hydroxy acids](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-beta-hydroxy-acids-salicylic-acid-in-skincare) (think: glycolic, lactic, salicylic) to kickstart that intense dead skin shedding process. While the experience can be deeply satisfying, not all experts are convinced it’s the best way to care for the feet.

Correa, for one, doesn’t recommend foot peels for her patients. “When it comes to skin and calluses, there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach,” she says. “Not all dead skin is meant to be removed, and by using a peel that targets all areas, you're risking hyper-sensitivity to the already healthy areas of your foot.” Another problem with at-home peels? They can lead to missed diagnoses. “Most people who are self-diagnosing at home might confuse skin abnormalities such as [psoriasis](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-live-with-and-treat-psoriasis), [eczema](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-skincare-products-to-treat-eczema-flare-ups-in-the-winter), or warts as normal calluses,” she shares. If you do decide to go ahead with a foot peel, she advocates for consulting with an expert first to make sure it’s the right treatment option for you. 

While Dr. Spielfogel has similar reservations, he ultimately believes foot peels are safe for most people. “Anyone with underlying medical issues such as diabetes or poor circulation should consult their podiatrist or PCP before attempting any type of peel,” he says. “But, for most people, Baby Foot is safe.” There are, however, some key exceptions. “It should not be used if you have any open wounds or sores, and I do not recommend it if someone has eczema or sensitive skin,” he adds. 

With a chemical foot peel, you’ll put your feet inside the peeling ‘shoes’ provided in the package (some brands recommend a foot soak first) for about an hour. After the allotted time, rinse off the solution and mentally prepare for your feet to begin peeling in about four to five days. Daily soaks will speed up the peeling process, but please be warned: The peeling is pretty dramatic. Expect to find dead skin and flakes on your sheets and in your socks and know that your feet will look pretty dry and flaky for a week or two. Needless to say, it’s best to do a foot peel *before* sandal season.

Timing wise, foot peels are not meant to be used weekly or even monthly. At most, schedule your peels for about twice a year.

## **4. Foot Cream**
If you’re looking for the simplest place to start an at-home foot care routine, regular moisturizing with a foot cream is it. An effective moisturizer is the key to keeping the skin healthy and strong, and it can and should be paired with any of the treatments mentioned above. 

Popular foot hydrators include glycerin and [ceramides](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-topical-ceramides-in-skincare) (yes, the same ones that work wonders on your face), and Correa also recommends finding a formula with urea — a humectant that hydrates by drawing water from the deeper layers of your skin and the air. Oh, and it had a dual benefit. “Footcare products with urea are great for both exfoliating and moisturizing because it breaks down the protein keratin in the outer layer of your skin to help reduce dead skin buildup and get rid of flaking or scaling skin,” she explains.

Dr. Spielfogel likes foot creams with glycolic acid for a similar reason. The fruit acid sloughs off dead skin cells while it nourishes. He suggests slathering it on at bedtime and then sleeping with socks for maximum penetration. And while lotions often are great for quick absorption, your feet can likely benefit from a heavier hydrator like a [rich cream, balm, or salve](https://aedit.com/aedition/difference-between-creams-lotions-moisturizers).

Conditions like athlete’s foot, calluses due to medical conditions like diabetes, and open sores need to be evaluated by a medical professional.

4 Ways To Take Care Of Your Feet At Home

Despite the fact that I have heard from many friends and colleagues that they felt perfectly safe [going to a nail salon](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-visit-a-nail-salon-during-covid-19) for a manicure and/or pedicure during the COVID-19 pandemic, I haven’t made it in for a service. In fact, I haven’t had a professional pedicure since the summer of 2019. Yes, I am a beauty editor who loves to paint her [fingernails](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-damaged-dry-brittle-finger-nails-cuticles) on a weekly basis and methodically layers creams and balms on her hands every night while pretty much neglecting everything that happens below the ankles.

For context, I live in New York City (which means I walk just about everywhere) and my go-to form of exercise during the pandemic has been socially distanced runs around my neighborhood. Needless to say, my [feet](https://aedit.com/aedition/cosmetic-treatments-procedures-for-feet-nails-toes) have seen better days. So, you can imagine my delight when I was invited to [Medi Pedi](https://medipedinyc.com/) — the midtown Manhattan mecca for medical-grade pedicures — to try the signature “medicure” service that is customized for every client depending on their needs.

## **What Is a Medical Pedicure?**
For starters, you might be wondering what differentiates a medical-grade pedicure from one you would get at your local nail salon. Perhaps the most obvious distinctions are the lack of water and nail polish, though there is plenty more that make medical pedicures unique. “Medical nail technicians are trained to detect and treat harder to deal with ailments like athlete’s foot, fungus, corns, and more,” explains [Marcela Correa](https://medipedinyc.com/about-1), a licensed professional medical pedicurist and founder of Medi Pedi. “Even when it comes to basic nail cutting, knowing the proper technique will prevent the nail from getting ingrown and causing the client more trouble in the end.” 

Whether you take great care in tending to your feet or treat them more as an afterthought, little issues can turn into bigger problems if they are not addressed properly. “More often than not, the reason why small ailments turn into more dangerous ones is due to lack of knowledge,” Correa says. “When getting a medical pedicure, not only do your feet get the makeover they need, you leave with the knowledge of how to maintain them healthy for a longer period of time.” 

A medical pedicure also has both immediate and long-term effects. “The treatment has many amazing benefits, with the main one being the prevention of serious infections,” Correa shares. The hygienic standards are — surprise, surprise — medical-grade, which assures the treatment is safe and effective for everyone (including those with underlying medical conditions like diabetes, she says). “Not worrying about if your tools are clean or if your nail tech knows about that weird thing on your nail gives you room to relax and enjoy the experience,” Correa adds.

## **The Treatment**
When I arrived at Medi Pedi, I was greeted by the masked office manager who immediately took my temperature and offered me hand sanitizer. I was then whisked away to my treatment room as to avoid unnecessary interaction with other clients. While Correa and her team have made some adjustments during the COVID-19 pandemic, hygiene and privacy have always been a priority.

Correa describes her signature service as “a facial for your feet.” I would liken it to a no-frills facial —  you know, the kind that is all about results — in the best way. The non-invasive, dry treatment lasts about an hour and focuses on the hygiene and aesthetics of the toenails and soles of the feet. It can target and treat athlete’s foot, corns, calluses, dry and cracked heels, ingrown and overgrown toenails, [nail fungus](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-your-nails-say-about-overall-health), nail discoloration, and more.

### **Step 1**: Cutting & Filing the Nails
Correa’s long-time associate Alejandra began my treatment by asking me if I was experiencing any pain, as she creamed my heels and placed (ingenious) silicone slings on top. I was not, and she quickly got to work manually cutting and filing my nails and cuticles. When she noticed pesky corns on each of my pinky toes, she cut them out with ease.

### **Step 2**: Buffing the Nails & Cuticles 
Next up? The electric nail file to buff my nails and remove the buildup of dry, dead skin. There were different attachments used for different toes, and she asked me to tell her if I experienced any pain or discomfort along the way (I didn’t). I had a small crack in my right big toenail that she was able to smooth, and the file removed all traces of surface stains from the nail plate. A dollop of cuticle oil on each toe started to rehydrate the freshly filed skin around my nail beds, and she finished up this part of the process by removing the silicone slings from my heels.

### **Step 3**: The Diagnosis 
At this point, Correa came into the room and immediately detected the very early stages of athlete’s foot on my soles. She recommended I pick up an over-the-counter antifungal cream on the way home to nip it in the bud (needless to say, I took her advice). She also asked if I walk around barefoot at home. I sheepishly told her I do. She thanked me for my honesty and told me she could tell. Even so, she said my feet were in good shape. I thought she might be trying to make me feel better, but Alejandra confirmed the damage was mostly cosmetic.

### **Step 4**: Buffing the Bottoms
Now it was time to focus on the bottoms of my feet. Correa applied moisturizer (a must before buffing, as not to damage healthy skin) and got to work on my heels with a single-use foot file. She recommends her clients do this once a week at home, filing in the same direction as the cracks. Her one rule? Skip the pumice stone because it harbors bacteria. She buffed my soles as well, and it’s safe to say they’ve never been smoother. All the while, she placed my shoes under a UV lamp for 15 minutes to kill any bacteria that was causing them to be, in her words, “sick.” 

### **Step 5**: Finishing Touches
As I mentioned, there is no polish with this pedicure, but that doesn’t mean your feet don’t look fabulous when you leave. Alejandra finished my treatment by giving my nails one last buff and shine that made them gleam more than any high-shine top coat ever has. 

## **The Verdict**
Nearly two months later, all traces of athlete’s foot are gone, my cuticles remain crisp, and my toenails are still shining bright like diamonds. Correa says she sees clients with painful ingrown nails and corns every four to six weeks — but every three months will do for most. I, for one, can’t wait to go back.

“To maintain an independent and pain-free lifestyle, our feet must be in tip-top shape,” Correa insists. What may seem like a mild concern (think: discoloration or peeling) can worsen into time-consuming conditions that were easily preventable. “Things like ingrown nails, thick nails, and cracked heels can cause pain that eventually affects every aspect of your life,” she explains. “Unbeknownst to many, most back problems start with the way we walk. You can think about that next time you shift your weight to avoid that painful nail that's been bothering you.” 

Her main advice? Wear comfortable shoes and don’t neglect your feet. “Caring for your feet is as vital as caring for your teeth, skin, or any other part of your body,” she says. Noted.

After 18 months without a pedicure, one writer tried a medical-grade treatment to transform her tired feet.

How A Medical Pedicure Revitalized My Neglected Feet

The lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer are well underway, which means sandal season is in full swing. And, while you may have treated yourself to a pampering pedicure to compliment your flip flops and slides, how much attention have you paid to the rest of your feet?

Despite all of the time and attention we devote to caring for our face and bodies, the area south of the ankle is often an afterthought — that is, if you think about it at all. "I see patients daily who come in with issues with their feet," says Washington Square Dermatology's board certified cosmetic dermatologist [Samer Jaber, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/samer-jaber-md-3882), who is also a clinical assistant professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.

From dry skin and odor to visible veins and cankles, the feet are just as prone to wear and tear as the rest of the body — and they are just as much in need of TLC, too. For those dealing with foot problems that even the prettiest toenail polish color can't distract from, there are cosmetic treatments and medical procedures to address everything from premature aging to funguses and to get your feet in tip-top shape before Labor Day. 

## **The Concern: Premature Aging**
When was the last time you remembered to put [sunscreen](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-you-need-to-know-about-sunscreen) on your feet? If the answer is 'never,' you're not alone. But, in addition to the skin cancer threat, it may be aging you. As with any other area of the body, foot skin can show signs of aging (think: crepiness, sun spots, wrinkles, and more) if it is not looked after. Fortunately, there are plenty of remedies — from topical medication and skincare to lasers and fillers — for those looking to turn back the clock.

### **Topicals**
Whether you're practicing a 12-step K-beauty skincare routine or keeping things minimalistic, you are likely using products formulated with brightening, exfoliating, and clarifying active ingredients on your face. So why not extend that same thinking to your feet?

The skin on the top of the feet is relatively thin, so it can absorb products well, but the tougher skin of the heels and soles is a different story. "Lotions or creams are great for the thinner skin on the surface of the foot but aren’t as effective on the heel or sole," says board certified West Hollywood dermatologist [Jason Emer, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/jason-emer-md-722). "I recommend patients use a spray or mousse formula on their feet because these options are more suitable for areas with hardened skin." 

In addition to incorporating SPF into your daily foot care routine, Dr. Emer encourages patients to look for over-the-counter products with vitamin C, glycolic acid, and retinoids to improve the tone and texture of foot skin.

### **Laser Treatments**
[Lasers](https://aedit.com/procedure/nonablative-fractional-lasers) can treat cosmetic skin concerns from head to toe, and Dr. Emer uses Aerolase, in particular, to treat a number of foot conditions. "Lasers can be used to treat feet that are showing premature signs of aging," he explains. "We use them to treat visible veins, skin discoloration, sun damage, as well as for [laser hair removal](https://aedit.com/procedure/laser-hair-removal) on the foot area."

### **Fillers**
Not just for the face, [hyaluronic acid-based fillers](https://aedit.com/procedure/hand-rejuvenation-with-dermal-fillers) can be injected on the top of the foot to create a plumped, youthful look where tissue may be losing its natural volume due to the aging process. 

Additionally, they can be used to disguise the appearance of bulging veins or tendons in the area. It is not uncommon for people who work out regularly to lose fat on their feet (your running regimen doesn’t just have you choosing between your ass and your face), which can make tendons appear more visible over time. "We use fillers to cover tendons in the feet," says Dr. Emer. "Belotero®, in particular, tends to give a softer result."

### **Foot Facials**
Though a bit less spa-like than your typical trip to the nail salon, [medical pedicures](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-get-a-medical-pedicure) can provide relief for patients dealing with an array of foot and nail issues, and they are often coupled with additional treatments at a dermatologist's office. 

Dr. Emer, for example, offers a "foot facial" that incorporates [microdermabrasion](https://aedit.com/aedition/difference-between-dermabrasion-microdermabrasion) to soften and brighten skin — a professional take on the tried-and-true foot scrub. And one of his current go-to treatments for feet has an aquatic twist. He applies exfoliating fish enzymes to gently dissolve dead skin cells and leave the foot smoother and more youthful.

When it comes to treating calluses and other stubborn skin, Dr. Emer will sometimes employ an ultrasound machine to help serums and other topicals penetrate deeper for better and faster results. 

### **Cankle Definition**
One of the most difficult areas to tone is the space between the calf and the ankle (a.k.a. the ‘cankle’), which is visible when wearing strappy sandals or heels.

Dr. Emer recommends [liposuction](https://aedit.com/procedure/power-assisted-liposuction) or [liposculpt](https://aedit.com/procedure/liposculpture) to patients looking for a more defined calf and ankle, and the same approach can be used on the upper calf as well for an overall slimming effect (as seen in the before and after photo above!). 

## **The Concern: Itchiness, Funguses, and Odor**
While cosmetic treatments are available to those looking to improve the appearance of their feet, the nitty-gritty of foot care is a little less glamorous — but no less important. From fungal infections like onychomycosis that thicken nails to itchy rashes caused by eczema or other skin conditions, dermatologists can treat these concerns with a mix of professional and at-home remedies.   

### **For Itchiness**
Foot itchiness is generally caused by a fungus (think: athlete's foot) or a skin condition like eczema. “For most patients who come to me with a fungus issue, a simple treatment with a prescription antifungal cream twice a day for two weeks is all they need,” says Dr. Jaber. In the case of eczema, a patient will likely be dealing with flare-ups on other parts of the body, too, and a dermatologist will be able to get to the root cause and triggers (be it stress, food sensitivities, or more) for longer-term management.  

### **For Thickened or Yellowed Toenails**
Toenails are not immune from funguses either, and fungal nails can be treated with laser therapy, topical treatment, oral medication, or some combination of the three. Regardless of which approach you choose, however, patience will be key. 

"Nail funguses often come back after treatment, and the treatment process, when taken orally and with topical application, is long," warns Dr. Jaber. "It takes three months of antifungal medication and a year of topical medication for a full course." Results from lasers, meanwhile, will not be visible until the affected part of the nail grows out, which could take months.

But, not to fret, there are some easy ways to help prevent fungal infections. For starters, Dr. Jaber recommends keeping closed-toe shoes (think: sneakers) clean and dry and using an antifungal powder as a precaution. And, in case you needed another excuse to reach for your sandals, open-toe shoes are ideal for thwarting funguses. 

### **For Odor**
Sweaty feet (especially in the heat of summer) are hard to avoid, but the moist environment is the likely culprit behind some of the most common foot concerns. "Usually foot odor is caused by sweaty feet, which encourages a bacterial or fungal infection," explains Dr. Jaber, who recommends keeping smells at bay by "making sure footwear is breathable" and "taking shoes and socks off" upon getting home from work to dry feet out.

While a dermatologist can prescribe a topical antifungal, antibacterial, or a prescription-strength antiperspirant depending on the cause of the odor, at-home remedies — like tea tree oil-infused warm water soaks — can sometimes do the trick as well. 

## **The Takeaway**
The oft-neglected feet deserve just as much time and attention as the rest of the body, and taking a bit of TLC could have you well on your way to the perfect pedicure — no matter the season. 

To prevent premature aging, Dr. Emer and Dr. Jaber both encourage patients to [apply sunscreen](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-most-innovative-sunscreens-for-summer) to the tops of the feet daily when footwear (like sandals) leave them exposed. Rashes, odor, and discolored nails, meanwhile, can be treated with prescription medication and other professional procedures performed at a dermatologist's office. Last but not least, those dealing with foot pain caused by bunions, ligaments, and more should consult a podiatrist.

Perhaps the secret to getting your feet through summer sandal season isn't at the nail salon but at the dermatologist's office.
