You don’t have to be a professional to know that the foundation of any beauty look is [healthy skin](https://aedit.com/aedition/holiday-makeup-skincare-tips-from-celebrity-makeup-artist-daniel-martin). While I had no red carpet to attend, I couldn’t pass up a chance to try the beloved [Red Carpet Facial](https://www.traciemartyn.com/blogs/press/tracie-martyn-skin-care-salon) at the highly sought-after Tracie Martyn spa in New York City. Would it be as transforming as the A-listers say? If it’s good enough for Rihanna, Madonna, Irina Shayk, and virtually every Hollywood ‘It’ girl on the scene, I needed to know if it can deliver the glow, lift, and contour to someone who doesn’t have a pampering army behind them (i.e. me). Here’s how it went. 

## **What Is the Red Carpet Facial**

## **The Experience & Results** 
The entire facial appointment lasted about an hour and worked like a time machine taking years off my face. When it comes to [eating right](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-diet-for-healthy-beautiful-skin), the recommendations are the same whether you are hitting the red carpet or heading home on the subway. He suggests skipping high sodium (a.k.a. dehydrating) foods in the days following treatment to avoid interfering with the sculpting results. Considering he doubles as a holistic nutritionist and his skin has an unmatched youthful glow, I was willing to follow any rule he set out for me. 

The rest of my day was consumed with mirror glances and phone checks to confirm that the results were not an illusion courtesy of the well-lit Tracie Martyn spa. Abiding by his post-facial instructions, I avoided salty foods, kept my water bottle filled, and mostly stuck to my regular skincare routine. “I am a very less-is-more kind of colorist,” says celebrity hair colorist [Tracey Cunningham](https://www.instagram.com/traceycunningham1/?hl=en) of the philosophy behind her decades-long career tending to some of Hollywood’s most famous manes (think: [Jennifer Lopez](https://www.instagram.com/p/CQz5j48An7V/), [Charlize Theron](https://www.instagram.com/p/CQtSGS3AdC9/), and [Khloe Kardashian](https://www.instagram.com/p/CPOWoNxA6lA/) to name a few). It may sound counterintuitive to hear a legendary hair colorist advocate for minimalism, but that is precisely the impetus behind her new book, *[True Color: The Essential Hair Color Handbook](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.barnesandnoble.com%2Fw%2Ftracey-cunninghams-true-color-tracey-cunningham%2F1137392850)*. “I wanted to explain why you shouldn’t do so much,” she shares.  

As it turns out, not doing “so much” amounts to embracing what Cunningham has deemed your “true color” — the hue you were naturally gifted with as a child before age and trends and dye took over. We had a chance to chat with Cunningham about her new book, the “true color” theory, and tips she wants everyone (colorists and clients alike!) to know.

## **What Is Your ‘True’ Hair Color?**
Your hair can (obviously) be whatever color you want it to be, but Cunningham has found that, depending on how much time and effort you wish to spend on getting ready on any given day, certain hues can make life simpler. “I have clients who are so good with their makeup and fixing up their hair that they can really do anything,” she says. In the book, she explains how someone like, say, [Emma Stone](https://www.instagram.com/p/CPOOqumAqmL/) (another client of hers) can go from platinum to auburn to mocha and back again because she updates the rest of her beauty look accordingly.

If, however, you don’t have access to a celebrity glam squad and are in search of a look that requires minimal effort to pull together, Cunningham maintains that your childhood shade — which almost certainly complements your skin tone and eye color — is your best bet. “Clients will bring their kids in and say that they just want their hair to look like them or how it did when they were younger,” she shares. Whether you have previously colored your hair or not, your locks, like the rest of your body, age. “The truth is, our hair does get darker as we get older,” Cunningham explains. “And I feel like a lot of people are always chasing that rainbow.”

In putting pen to paper, Cunningham hopes to change that. “I thought it would be a fun book to show celebrity photos of them when they were younger and then what they chose to do when they got older,” she says. The tome features childhood pictures of stars like Jessica Biel, Minka Kelly, Maria Sharapova, and more to give you a sense of how the colorist has been able to honor their, well, roots. “Not everyone follows the recipe, but it is a good idea,” she says. “Most of the time, it works.”

## **How to Achieve Your True Color**
Intrigued by the prospect of returning to your roots? “Bring in a picture because a picture says a thousand words,” Cunningham suggests. Showing your colorist photos of yourself growing up will allow them to see your hair in its original state — before [hair dye](https://aedit.com/aedition/hair-dye-allergies) or, simply, time took its toll. 

In addition to taking a trip down memory lane with your baby photos, you can also flip through hundreds of inspiration images in Cunningham’s book. Broken up into four sections (blondes, brunettes, redheads, and silvers), you are able to get a sense of how hair color changes over time and the steps you can take to return yours to its natural glory — with the help of some strategic coloring, of course.

And since even the best dye job in the world can’t make up for damaged tresses or an unhealthy lifestyle, Cunningham devotes an entire section of the book to [hair health](https://aedit.com/aedition/at-home-hair-care-tips). And it’s not just about products (though she is a big fan of and advisor for [Olaplex](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Folaplex.com%2F)). “If you hold back on nutrients, it’s bad and I can see it in the chair,” she says. “There is something to taking your vitamins and eating your vegetables.” 

## **The Takeaway**
As COVID-19 lockdown restrictions lifted, Cunningham started to see many of her clients for the first time in many, many months. For those who hadn’t been bitten by the DIY bug, she was pleasantly surprised by what she saw. “For a lot of people, I liked their hair better without them coloring it so much,” she admits. While that may sound blasphemous coming from a professional hair colorist, it all goes back to her less-is-more approach. “I tried to talk them into staying gray or keeping their natural color,” she says. At the very least, she can extol the virtues of embracing your roots. For Cunningham, the end game is always the same: “I love shiny, healthy hair,” she says.

Why A Celebrity Hair Colorist Wants You To Embrace Your ‘True Color’

“LiveLoveLift.” That was the hashtag heard around the world when Marc Jacobs shared a [bandaged selfie](https://www.instagram.com/p/CRmFuG4sDBG/) of himself late last month that led many to speculate that he had undergone a facelift. In true Marc Jacobs fashion, it didn’t take long for him to peel back the curtain and share the details of his surgery with the masses.

The 58-year-old fashion designer had, in fact, gotten a facelift at the hands of [Andrew Jacono, MD](https://www.newyorkfacialplasticsurgery.com/), a double board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon. The New York City-based surgeon specializes in a technique known as the [deep plane facelift](https://aedit.com/procedure/deep-plane-facelift), which is one of the most invasive but also one of the most effective types of rhytidectomy. Dr. Jacono performs the procedure in a way that leaves the skin attached to the muscle to avoid tautness and create a more natural result. “Yes, you can look like yourself but just better after #plasticsurgery,” he [wrote on Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/p/CRty0maL-tv/) in response to one of Jacobs’ post-op posts. “This is why I love the #deepplanefacelift.” 

In the days since his surgery, Jacbos has chronicled his experience every step of the way. If you were already one of his 1.6 million Instagram followers, then you are used to seeing the ins and outs of his daily routine. Even so, there was something surprising — and refreshing — about watching a public figure share their aesthetic journey in real time. 

He posted a picture of himself in a [hyperbaric oxygen chamber](https://aedit.com/aedition/benefits-of-hyperbaric-oxygen-therapy-after-plastic-surgery), which is used to promote healing. We’ve also gotten several more selfies from the designer, showing the evolution of recovery. Three days post-op, Jacobs’ [wrote](https://www.instagram.com/p/CRtwy2AMR3j/) that he was “ready for lewks,” as he showed off some minor swelling and bruising.

By day six, those side effects had intensified. “Bruised. Sore. And super swollen,” he [wrote on IG](https://www.instagram.com/p/CRzEnzWMzqj/), adding that he was on his way to see Dr. Jacono for an HBOT treatment. The next day (i.e. one-week post-op), Jacobs [said](https://www.instagram.com/p/CR18QnQFHAT/) that he was “feeling the healing.” On day 10, the designer was [updating](https://www.instagram.com/p/CR9dPWtl8mK/) us all that his stitches had been removed.

Along the way, Jacobs has been punctuating his posts with hashtags like #NothingToHide and #NoShameInMyGame. With a jawline like that, who could blame him? 

We so often write about the plastic surgery healing process and how patients plan their procedures with discretion in mind. The ability to [recover](https://aedit.com/aedition/facelift-recovery-healing-process) quietly at home with undisrupted downtime factors into when surgeries are scheduled, and there is certainly nothing wrong with stepping away from the spotlight for a few weeks to heal. 

In the past, when celebrities have chosen to disclose that they went under the knife, we hear from them after the swelling has subsided and they are back out in the public eye. By letting us in on the period in between, Jacobs is pioneering a new kind of transparency and paving the way for others to speak candidly about what to expect from procedures. 

In an [interview with Vogue](https://www.vogue.com/article/marc-jacobs-plastic-surgery-face-lift-aging), the designer confirmed his intention to normalize the conversation around cosmetic surgery. As he explained, he was a longtime patient of Fredric Brandt, MD, and began seeing NYC-based board certified dermatologist [Paul Jarrod Frank, MD](https://pfrankmd.com/), after his passing. In addition to [Botox®](https://aedit.com/procedure/botox) and [filler](https://aedit.com/procedure/dermal-filler-and-injectable-solutions), Jacobs said that he started getting [thread lifts](https://aedit.com/procedure/thread-lift) “to hold up his jowls” and the area of his face “where the skin was sagging.” When the benefits became a bit too short-lived for his taste, and Dr. Frank recommended a consultation with a plastic surgeon.

After consulting with Dr. Jacono, Jacobs knew he had met his man, and he never thought twice about sharing his experience. “I’m not covering my face. I’m not wearing sunglasses. I’m not incognito. I’ve got some scars around my ears, and my face is swollen, and I have a bruised neck, but I’m still posting on Instagram,” Jacobs [told Vogue](https://www.vogue.com/article/marc-jacobs-plastic-surgery-face-lift-aging). “I don’t care. I don’t even see it as an effort to be transparent. I’m doing what I normally do, which is I’m living my life and sharing it with anybody who is interested.”

We’ve all read the celebrity interviews in which they play coy on what’s flowing into their fountain of youth, and Jacobs isn’t here for it. “It seems so crazy when an actor or public figure denies that they've done something,” he [said](https://www.vogue.com/article/marc-jacobs-plastic-surgery-face-lift-aging). “And they say like, ‘Oh, it's olive oil, I bathe in seltzer.' It's like, come on. Like all those things might be true, but they're not why your neck is tight.” Not only does this behavior perpetuate unattainable notions of beauty, it also perpetuates the notion that having work done is something to be self-conscious about.

In response to one of Jacobs post-op pictures, Dr. Jacono [praised](https://www.instagram.com/p/CRty0maL-tv/) his patient for his “transparency and authenticity” that will “give others the courage in their journey of self care to take control of their appearance.” In speaking with Vogue, Jacobs admitted he was surprised by the adulation he’s received, but he is hopeful for what it might mean for the future. “I think you just need to start a conversation, and then maybe that will have a resounding echo that helps people feel less ashamed,” he [told the mag](https://www.vogue.com/article/marc-jacobs-plastic-surgery-face-lift-aging). “I just don’t think there’s shame in being vain.”

Ten years after the OG device hit the market, the manufacturer is back with a fully redesigned version, CoolSculpting® Elite, that improves upon both the procedure and the results. “It’s been rebuilt from the ground up,” Dr. Stevens explains. Perhaps the biggest change is the addition of a second applicator. “It’s quicker because there are two applicators that can run at a time instead of one,” he says. “You can accomplish the same thing in half the time.”

## **2. Try a Richer Hair Color**
Adding depth and dimension isn’t as much about changing your hair’s hue as it is about enhancing it. “If you have fine or thinning hair, chances are you have a lot of baby hairs.” says [Nikki Lee](https://www.instagram.com/nikkilee901/?hl=en), Garnier celebrity hair colorist and co-founder of [Nine Zero One](https://www.ninezeroonesalon.com/) salon. “To give the illusion of thicker hair, you want to choose a rich color that can deepen those baby hairs in addition to the rest of your hair.” She says “boosting” your current locks by just a shade or two — a la Lea Michele's brunette strands below — will “make a big difference.”

Oh, and if you don’t color your hair, you might want to start. “People who have finer hair tend to stay away from color, but color can actually give your hair a nice texture to make it feel fuller,” Lee shares. “You don’t have to jump to a permanent color. You can try a demi-permanent color to start.”

If you’re looking for additional texture (like the beachy waves above!), Streicher suggests adding a few waves with an iron — but be sure to keep the heat setting low. “High heat can actually flatten fine hair,” she warns.
