The gadget you are about to see is not a time-traveling device from the future but is, in fact, the [Priori Skincare UnveiLED Mask](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.skinstore.com%2Fpriori-skincare-unveiled-mask%2F12708864.html) featuring light emitting diode (LED) technology. Priced at $395, this silicone mask is meant to use the power of red LED light to reduce facial lines and wrinkles, brighten skin, and improve texture in 10 minutes a day. Since that all sounds fairly amazing and I had some time on my hands during lockdown, I figured I’d offer up my face as a guinea pig for the mask that the brand sent over to try. Here’s what happened after a few weeks of use.

## **The Potential Magic of LED**
First, a bit of background on [LED light therapy](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-benefits-of-light-therapy). I knew that, in theory, it really could make a difference in my skin. [Studies have shown](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5843358/) LED light to have various benefits ranging from lessening acne and rejuvenating aging skin to assisting in wound healing after surgical and resurfacing procedures. I reached out to New York-based board certified dermatologist [Dendy Engelman, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/dendy-engelman-md-312), (who I’ve seen as a patient myself over the years) to find out a bit more about it. She explains that LED light works by “emitting infrared lights — causing heat — in different wavelengths and spectrums, which have different skincare benefits.” 

If you’ve seen other LED devices, you might have noticed an array of colors ranging from yellow and green to red and [blue](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-your-phone-might-be-aging-you). The [Priori](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fprioriskincare.com%2F) mask employs red light, which she says is most commonly used to promote circulation as well as “building, strengthening, and maximizing cellular structure.” 

As is the case with most at-home offerings of in-office treatments, the [DIY versions](https://aedit.com/aedition/maintaining-skin-with-devices-skincare-products-between-cosmetic-procedures) tend to be less effective, though she insists at-home masks will get you noticeable results with continued use. And, most importantly, she assured me that it’s safe. “The light doesn’t cause any burns or skin damage,” Dr. Engelman explains. “It’s virtually painless, and, for some, the colors are very relaxing.” But, as always, tell your doctor about any and all your conditions (like photosensitivity) just in case.

## **Going for Silicone**
There are several LED masks on the market these days, but the Priori model caught my attention because it’s made of a flexible silicone. That means it can mold more effectively to the face than the hard-shell styles out there. I’ve got a small mug and a Roman nose, so I need something that bends to hug my contours. It also claims to help super-charge skincare ingredients, which is why I smeared the [Priori Skincare DNA fx221 Recovery Serum](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.skinstore.com%2Fpriori-skincare-dna-fx221-recovery-serum-50ml%2F12515023.html) on before every session.

As for the experience of using the mask itself, well, there’s not much to report — and I mean that in a good way. It stays on via a Velcro strap around your head and isn’t hot to the touch or uncomfortable to wear. It has a built-in timer, so it shuts itself off after 10 minutes. The lights don’t hurt my eyes at all. The most I can say about them is that they’re distracting, so I gave up quickly on trying to get anything done while wearing it. It’s for the best, since the Priori folks had suggested I relax with my eyes closed while wearing it to get the most benefit on my eyelid lines anyway. Sometimes I combined it with a guided meditation session because who doesn’t love multitasking? 

## **The Results** 
Before we get into the before and after, I want to be upfront with the fact that I got a fresh round of [Botox®](https://aedit.com/aedition/comparing-neurotoxin-botulinum-type-a-injections-botox-dysport-jeuveau-xeomin) about half-way into my trial, which softened the lines on my forehead. All the rest of my skin changes, however, were thanks to the mask. In fact, the only thing I’ve got on my skin in the before-and-after pictures below is moisturizer ([Crème de la Mer Moisturizing Cream](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sephora.com%2Fproduct%2Fcreme-de-la-mer-moisturizing-cream-P416341), if you’re curious).

The first benefit I noticed? About two weeks into my month-long trial, my skin looked glowier. Like, a lot glowier. But it wasn’t until I did a side-by-side comparison at four weeks that I realized how much it’s improved my skin tone. The ruddiness on and around my nose has softened significantly, and my pores are less noticeable.

I can’t say that I’ve noticed any line softening yet. But, with having to discount my forehead because of the Botox®, I’m obviously not the best example of what it can do in that category. I plan to continue using it to see if it eventually helps my marionette lines. Even if it doesn’t, the glow and skin tone changes are enough to keep me going.

Minimally invasive cosmetic procedures are on the rise. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ [2018 Plastic Surgery Statistics Report](https://www.plasticsurgery.org/documents/News/Statistics/2018/cosmetic-procedure-trends-2018.pdf), the market grew 163 percent between 2000 and 2018, and the trend is expected to continue tracking upward. 

Among the go-to treatments? Injectables (think: [Botox®](https://aedit.com/procedure/botox-facial) and filler) and non-invasive fat reduction, which just so happen to be among the best ways to non-surgically lift, firm, plump, and contour the face and neck. Whether you are looking to combat visual signs of aging like volume loss, fine lines and wrinkles, and sagging or are simply looking to further define your facial features, there is an array of non-invasive cosmetic procedures that can reshape the face — sans surgery.

## __Dermal Filler__
Fillers aren’t just for plumping your pout. [Soft tissue fillers](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-dermal-fillers) like Juvéderm®, Radiesse®, Restylane®, and Sculptra® can be used to re-shape the entire face. Made of hyaluronic acid, collagen, calcium hydroxylapatite, and poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) to name a few, filler can be injected into the skin to restore volume, smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, and enhance facial contour.

While it probably comes as no surprise that dermal filler is often employed under the eyes to eliminate bags, in the mid-face region to sculpt cheekbones or add volume to sagging nasolabial folds, and on the lower face to define the jawline, a board certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon can recommend less obvious uses as well.

“Dermal fillers can be placed on the bone and within the muscle of the chin to augment its shape and projection,” explains board certified dermatologist [Rita Linkner, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/rita-linkner-md-8907), of New York’s Spring Street Dermatology. “The chin is oftentimes forgotten but adds so much to facial structure. A syringe of filler in this delicate area goes such a long way.”

Using filler to augment the chin is a non-surgical solution to refine a facial feature that previously would have required a more invasive cosmetic procedure — like a [facial implant](https://aedit.com/procedure/alloplastic-chin-implant) — to correct. So-called [liquid rhinoplasties](https://aedit.com/procedure/liquid-rhinoplasty) and [chemical brow lifts](https://aedit.com/procedure/chemical-brow-lift) are other common examples of filler being used to mimic the effects of traditional plastic surgery.

One key difference, however, between non-surgical cosmetic procedures and their surgical counterparts is the level of permanence. The results of dermal fillers, while immediate, last an average of six months to two years (depending on the region being treated) compared to the much longer lifespan of surgical procedures. But the downtime associated with filler is minimal, with only about a week (or less) of minor redness, swelling, or bruising.

## __Botulinum Toxin Type A Injections__ 
Easily confused with dermal filler, botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) injections (read: Botox® and its competitors) work in an entirely different way. While dermal filler quite literally fills in the hollows of the face to restore volume and fullness, [BoNT-A injectables](https://aedit.com/aedition/comparing-neurotoxin-botulinum-type-a-injections-botox-dysport-jeuveau-xeomin) like Botox®, Dysport®, Jeuveau®, and Xeomin® are FDA approved to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles caused by repeated facial expressions (think: frowning, squinting, smiling, and the like) by injecting it into the muscles underlying the affected area. But their usefulness goes far beyond smoothing wrinkles.  

BoNT-A injections can be used to complement cosmetic surgery procedures like [blepharoplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/upper-eyelid-blepharoplasty) (a.k.a. eyelid surgery) or [brow lifts](https://aedit.com/procedure/traditional-midbrow-lift) and can be strategically injected to refine the face shape or define facial features. Botox® and the like can be used to slim out a round face, lift the corners of the mouth, and even soften the jawline (ideal for teeth grinders or those lacking definition).

“I inject a neurotoxin into the masseter muscle to slim the face very commonly,” says Dr. Linkner. “It turns a square-shaped face into a more aesthetically pleasing oval. Studies have been done that show the jawbone itself slims on CT scans with toxin use in the masseters. As the muscles exert less pressure on the bone, the osteoclasts start to reshape the bone itself.”

Like dermal fillers, BoNT-A injections are temporary. Once injected, the results can take up to a week to kick in (patients may experience minor bruising and pain at the injection site) and typically last around three to six months.

## __Kybella®__
Another player in the minimally invasive injectable game? [Kybella®](https://aedit.com/procedure/kybella).

A form of deoxycholic acid (i.e. the naturally occurring molecule that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat in the body), Kybella® is FDA approved to reduce fat under the chin and thus improve the contour of the neck. Off-label uses include breaking down stubborn fat deposits on the stomach and back and above the knees and elbows.

When deoxycholic acid is injected directly into the submental fat under the chin, the fat-storing adipose tissue is destroyed. Over time, the fat cells are removed from the treated area via the body’s natural metabolic processes.

The best thing about Kybella®? The results are permanent. Dr. Linkner says that the body metabolizes the destroyed adipocytes (fat cells) over the proceeding six to eight weeks. Unlike [liposuction](https://aedit.com/procedure/power-assisted-liposuction), the fat will not redistribute, but most patients will need multiple sessions (up to six), spaced at least a month apart to see the most optimal results. 

Additionally, there is a bit more downtime associated with Kybella® than, say, Botox® or dermal filler. “Expect a 36-hour period of swelling that truly peaks 12 hours post-procedure,” Dr. Linkner warns. “Bruising is common, so I give all my patients arnica post-Kybella.”

## __PDO Thread Lift__
While nothing can replace the long term lifting and firming benefits of a surgical [facelift](https://aedit.com/procedure/smas-facelift), thread lifts are a worthy non-surgical alternative. Ideal for patients looking for facial rejuvenation (especially as it relates to the lower face and jowls), the minimally invasive cosmetic procedure involves the subcutaneous placement of polydioxanone (PDO) sutures to lift sagging tissue. 

Unlike facelifts, which surgically remove excess skin, [thread lift](https://aedit.com/procedure/pdo-thread-lift) techniques focus on repositioning the tissue beneath the surface of the skin. [Hand rejuvenation](https://aedit.com/procedure/hand-rejuvenation-with-dermal-fillers) often requires a combination of different treatments to achieve the best results, including treating dark spots on the skin, as well as addressing a loss of volume with either [fillers](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-dermal-fillers) or [fat transfer](https://aedit.com/procedure/hand-rejuvenation-with-fat-transfer), and bulging veins. ## **What Is Hand Rejuvenation?**

## **How Do Hand Rejuvenation Treatments Work?**

### **Fat Transfer**
Fat transfers use fat from the patient’s own body. Fat cells are removed from a donor area, usually the stomach or the thighs, using a small needle. It is processed and cleaned, then injected into the hands (or other areas of the body). Fat cells have a high re-absorption rate, which means that some of the volume gained from the procedure will be lost as the body processes the re-injected fat. Your practitioner will likely need to overfill the area at first to account for this inevitable loss in volume. 

According to the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, fat grafting carries a lower risk of infection and delivers long-lasting, natural-looking results. It is usually carried out under local anesthesia. It takes around an hour to complete the whole process, from cell collection to re-injection, and can be done in-office. Patients may experience swelling and bruising after the procedure, which lasts for about a week. On average, fat transfer costs about $2,000, depending on the areas being treated, and some patients may desire additional procedures to maintain results in the future.

### **Fillers** 
Dermal fillers have been used to smooth out wrinkles on the face for a number of years, but they have recently been FDA-approved to be used on hands, too. Popular filler choices for hand rejuvenation are Voluma® and Radiesse®, which is particularly popular because, not only does it act as a filler, but it also encourages the production of collagen. When using a dermal filler, a doctor will typically “dilute them to help the product glide easily and use a few injection points,” says Dr. Buford. “Patients are given exercises to do with their hands to help distribute the filler evenly.”

Dermal fillers deliver predictable, immediate results and are suitable for patients of all complexions. Additionally, fillers do not require any anesthesia, but a topical numbing cream may be used to limit the discomfort caused by the injections themselves. It is not uncommon for patients to experience some swelling or small bruises at the injection site, which typically resolves itself in a short period of time. Since dermal fillers are temporary, patients should expect to get them every year or so. Pricing for dermal fillers in the hands averages at $660 per syringe used.

### **Laser Ablation** 
Bulging veins on the hands are usually not a cause for medical concern, but they do make some people feel self-conscious. Age-related visible veins can be treated with laser ablation, the same kind used for varicose veins on legs. This treatment has a high success rate and can help minimize the need for more invasive surgery down the road.

Your dermatologist or plastic surgeon will assess which veins to treat during the initial consultation. The actual procedure is typically done in-office under local anesthesia. The practitioner will insert a diode laser system into the veins which cauterizes them and reduces visibility over time. After the procedure, the area will be bandaged and there may be some slight bleeding and minor swelling (that will last up to 10 days). Risks are minimal but can include infection and damage to surrounding blood vessels. The average cost for the treatment is $2,000 which varies depending on the number of veins being treated.

### **Chemical Peels**
Just like it does for your face, a [chemical peel](https://aedit.com/procedure/superficial-chemical-peels) offers a practical solution to remove older damaged skin encouraging the growth of more youthful and rejuvenated skin. Chemical peel treatments also reduce the appearance of dark spots, pigmentation caused by sun damage, and some forms of scarring. Peels are quick, can be customized based on your individual needs and can be repeated to achieve best results.

Chemical peels should be applied by a board certified dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon and, depending on the strength of the peel, you may receive local anesthesia to ensure the procedure is painless. The practitioner will apply a solution to the treatment area and will leave it in place for a set amount of time depending on the type of peel and your skin type. When the time is up, it will be neutralized, either with water or petroleum jelly. Over a few days, the skin will begin to peel off to reveal new skin beneath. This newly exposed layer of skin will be sensitive in the beginning and you will need to follow aftercare instructions to ensure it is protected. Redness and skin sensitivity can be expected following a chemical peel treatment, but these effects should subside over a few days. Results last for a varying amount of time and your practitioner will discuss how often you should consider having another chemical peel to maintain the best results. The average cost of a chemical peel is $400, but this varies depending on the product used and the area being treated.

### **IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) & Laser Skin Resurfacing**
Dark spots develop as the skin is exposed to sunlight and can be treated with a range of light therapies. IPL can treat unwanted dark spots but is not as focused as other options. Lasers, on the other hand, allow for the practitioner to be very precise in targeting certain spots and could be more appropriate for smaller treatment areas. During your initial consultation, your board certified dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon will be able to advise on the best options for you. 

Depending on the type of pigmentation being treated, your practitioner will also prescribe a number of sessions that will usually take place once a month. It can take up to two to three weeks for the dark spots to begin to fade. The main risk of IPL or laser treatments is damage to surrounding tissue, which your practitioner will also discuss with you during your consultation. Treatments cost around $200 to $300 per session, depending on the area being treated and the type of machine being used.

What You Need To Know About Hand Rejuvenation

You have your anti-aging skincare routine down to a science, you never leave the house without wearing vitamin C serum and sunscreen, and at night you refuse to let your face touch the pillow without applying under-eye treatment and moisturizer. But what are you doing about your neck?

Americans spend so much effort preventing signs of aging like creasing and wrinkling in the space between their chins and foreheads. In reality, the neck often starts to look older long before crow’s feet enter the picture. The skin on our necks is thinner than the skin on our faces and it’s exposed to the same wear and tear. Unfortunately, it also tends to get a lot less TLC, if any at all.

“Over time, skin loses collagen and elastin,” says New York City board certified plastic surgeon [Benjamin Paul, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/benjamin-paul-md-392). Dr. Paul explains smoking and sun damage can also further accelerate aging of the skin on the neck. Those aren't the only causes of neck aging. As we get older, laxity in the neck occurs due to a loss of support from connective tissue and muscle. This leads to what we commonly call a “waddle” or “turkey neck" and looks like loose skin under our chin.

The appearance of sagging skin on the neck can affect everyone. Repeated pulling of the platysma muscle, which is the muscle men often flex while shaving, tugs on the overlying skin and causes it to wrinkle over time. According to Dr. Paul, thyroid or neck surgery also loosens the neck and can contribute to an older appearance.

While there’s not much we can do about getting older, it is possible to slow down the physical signs of aging. Here are some ways you can prevent future sagging skin and promote a younger-looking neck.

## **1. Protect Your Skin From the Sun**
It’s common knowledge that [sun exposure](https://aedit.com/aedition/7-things-youre-not-doing-for-your-skin-but-should) causes major damage to your skin. This includes the delicate skin on your neck, which is one of the first places the signs of aging can take hold. According to Dr. Paul, the single best thing you can do to preserve a youthful neck and prevent sagging skin, age spots, and fine lines is to wear sunscreen.

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends an SPF of at least 30 because it blocks 97 percent of the sun’s damaging UVB rays. Apply sunscreen to your face and neck every morning before putting on your makeup, whether you’re spending the day indoors or outside. Remember to reapply every few hours to make sure your skin is always protected.

## **2. Add a Retinoid To Your Skincare Routine**

If you’re an anti-aging veteran, your medicine cabinet is likely stocked with skincare products that promise to reduce wrinkles and give you a smooth, tight complexion. There is a huge variety of creams, for instance, that help moisturize the neck. Do they actually work? “In my experience,” says Dr. Paul, “the benefit of neck creams is quite limited.” Unless it contains a retinoid.

Retinoids, a class of ingredients that includes retinol, retinyl palmitate, and retinoic acid, can repair sun damage by reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, smoothing the skin texture, and evening the skin tone. They do it by boosting collagen production and stimulating cell turnover deep within the skin.

“Retinoids are potent, but they may be irritating,” says Dr. Paul. To minimize irritation, apply a retinoid to clean skin at night and wait a few minutes before layering on moisturizer. Because the skin on the neck is thinner than it is on the face, start with a small amount of retinoid and build up slowly. If you've never used one, a dermatologist can guide you in selecting the right product.

## **3. Shrink Your Double Chin** 
If you’re worried about a double chin, a non-invasive treatment called [Kybella®](https://aedit.com/procedure/kybella) could help restore the youthful neck you desire. Kybella® is a non-surgical treatment that involves a series of deoxycholic acid injections that target and destroy fat cells in the chin. There are no incisions with Kybella® and most patients experience minimal downtime.

While the acid in Kybella® does destroy fat cells, which are metabolized and eliminated by the body naturally, it won’t help with turkey neck. “Kybella® does not change the skin of the neck or laxity that may be present in the platysma,” Dr. Paul explains. To remove sagging skin after Kybella® treatment, a skin-tightening or surgical procedure may be necessary.

## **4. Reduce Wrinkles Caused By Aging and Sun Damage**
We know Botox® works to reduce lines and wrinkles on the face. Similarly, [Botox®](https://aedit.com/procedure/botox-facial) can be injected into the submental area and [jawline to give a “lift”](https://aedit.com/procedure/jawline-slimming-with-botox) to an aging neck. “Botox® may reduce vertical cording or banding on the neck that is caused by the platysma muscle contraction,” says Dr. Paul. The treatment promotes a more youthful neck by relaxing the muscles that pull on the overlying skin and create wrinkles. With laser resurfacing, “the goal is to improve lines, texture, and surface irregularities,” says Dr. Paul. If you have dark spots on your neck, you’re looking at the results of sun damage. Luckily, you don’t have to live with age spots forever. So, what exactly is blue light and what harm can it do to our skin? And most importantly, what can we do about it? 

## **What Is Blue Light?**
First, we need to understand that all light exists on a spectrum, but human eyes can only see rays on the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum of visible light: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Light creates EM energy waves that our brains perceive as color. Each wave has a different wavelength, which makes us see a different color. As we move up the spectrum from red to violet, the energy increases. The more energy a wave has, the higher the frequency. Waves with a higher frequency are potentially more damaging to our bodies, which is why [infrared rays are good for you and ultraviolet (UV) rays can be harmful](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-benefits-of-light-therapy). On this scale of visible light, blue light is high. 

All light contains these waves, but it's the energy they emit that allows us to see color. Blue light is no exception. In fact, the sun is our largest source of blue light and as the sun's rays collide with air molecules and are scattered through the earth's atmosphere, the sky appears blue. This is why blue light is evolutionarily significant to humans: it helps us differentiate between day and night, enabling us to regulate our sleep cycles and maintain our circadian rhythm.

## **Why Blue Light is Harmful**
Even though blue light is a high energy visible light, our eyes provide very little protection from it, especially on clear, sunny days. Our LED screens (like computer screens, television screens, and phone screens) produce an even higher intensity of this same blue light. Too much exposure can cause damage to our eyes, affect our sight, and make us feel lethargic and fatigued.

The eye’s frontal membrane (the cornea) naturally absorbs light from lower frequencies (red, orange, green), but high energy light (blue and violet) goes straight through. The retina at the back of the eye absorbs it and can deteriorate over time with too much exposure. And about that circadian rhythm: since our brains associate blue light with daytime, looking at a screen late at night tricks our bodies into thinking we need to stay awake. Some studies show that this can affect our mental health and lead to sleep problems.

Studies also indicate that blue light can also cause skin damage. Though not as harmful as the higher frequency UVA and UVB rays, blue light rays are found in all LED screens as well as the LED lights in our homes and offices, which means many of us are being exposed to more blue light than UV rays on a daily basis. The way it affects our skin is similar to UV rays. The high frequency of blue light allows it to pass through the top epidermal and dermal layers of our skin and into the subcutaneous tissues underneath where the rays can cause the production of free radicals. These unstable molecules damage our cell structure, affect protein production and can damage our skin’s DNA. When the body is unable to fight off free radical damage, this is known as oxidative stress. The long-term effects of oxidative stress include premature aging like fine lines and wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and a dull, tired look to our skin.

## **What We Can Do About Blue Light**
As we become more aware of how blue light could be affecting our skin, many people are turning to cosmetic products and treatments to help prevent, slow down or reverse the effects. We spoke to [Payman J. Danielpour, MD, F.A.C.S](https://aedit.com/provider/payman-danielpour-md-797), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Beverly Hills, to find out how to combat blue light damage, reduce signs of skin aging, and improve the skin's appearance.

"Treatments are based on whether we are addressing a problem or trying to avoid problems in the future," he says. "Having a good aesthetician to provide a structured facial protocol to address skin tone, texture and color is always a good start. Reading a book or listening to music won’t expose your skin to LED light and most importantly won’t disrupt your circadian rhythm as you are preparing to go to sleep.

## **Treatments Can Help Delay the Damage**
Putting down the digital devices is a good start, but Dr. Danielpour also recommends treatments to help combat damage and signs of aging that is already apparent. 

[Botox® (i.e. botulinum toxin)](https://aedit.com/procedure/botox-facial) is one of the most popular cosmetic tools for smoothing the skin and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, thus making skin appear younger and fuller. There are some studies that indicate it can be used to reduce signs of aging in the skin as well. Hyaluronic acid is often used in filler products like **Juvéderm Ultra Plus Allergan** which can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles in the face when injected and massaged into lines. Results are typically visible after two  to three weeks and can cost an average of around $600.

**[HydraFacials](https://aedit.com/procedure/hydrafacial)** are another popular solution for those seeking to reverse signs of aging and the effects of light damage. There are three main steps to a HydraFfacial session: cleansing, exfoliating, and intensive moisturizing with a special serum. The result is softer, smoother, and more youthful-looking skin that is free from impurities. Each treatment takes about half an hour with repeat treatments encouraged. One HydraFacial session typically costs around $150.

**[Thread Lifts](https://aedit.com/procedure/thread-lift)** are gaining popularity as an alternative to the classic facelift. Rather than having skin removed from the face to reduce wrinkles and sagging, the doctor carefully inserts threads into the face. Theories and studies around blue light are still in their relative infancy, so we don’t have data from long term studies to tell us exactly how damaging blue light is to our skin. But since our use of digital devices shows no sign of slowing, we know we need to be prepared. As for the future? Treatments are going to get more advanced. "We are on the forefront of very exciting times to use our own stem cells for wellness and cosmetic medicine but we are not quite there yet," says Dr. Danielpour. Let's hope it's sooner than later.

## **Margot, New York, NY**
Margot was 59 when she decided to have [facelift surgery](https://aedit.com/procedure/midfacelift) as a 60th birthday present to herself. “I had seen my friends buying themselves the pair of designer shoes they’d been lusting after since they were in their 30s or going on a once in a lifetime holiday to celebrate the milestone, but I wanted something that would help me to stay young. I still feel young so I wanted to look how I feel,” Margot explained. 

**The AEDITION**: *Overall, how was your experience getting a facelift?*

**Margot**: The procedure itself was very successful, and recovery was easier than I expected. I planned to have my facelift during the autumn when I had fewer events to attend and could easily allow myself to have two weeks to recover. The first 10 days were the worst in terms of how I looked. There was definitely a lot of swelling initially, but I had been told to expect that. I also had to wear a strap under my chin around my head for that, so going out wasn’t really an option until that phase had passed.
 
**The AEDITION**: *Which products would you suggest buying to make healing more comfortable?*

**Margot**: My plastic surgeon and the nurses where I had my procedure gave me instructions for how to reduce the pain and swelling, which I did follow to the letter so I think that definitely helped. I had also prepared bags of crushed ice before going to the clinic which was helpful. Ice cubes would have been painful to use, but the crushed ice adapts well to the shape of your face so it’s less painful and works well on the swelling. The pain was less than I had expected, but I did bruise a lot, so I had to call my physician to check that it was normal, but they advised me to keep up with the pain medication and ice, and it cleared after a week or so.
 
**The AEDITION**: *How long after the procedure were you able to return to your usual activities?*

**Margot**: I was able to start socializing again 10 days after the surgery, but I couldn’t go back to the gym for a month. I was told not to do any strenuous exercise for a month after which was rough, but for the first couple of weeks I was busy taking care of myself so it wasn’t all that bad.
 
**The AEDITION**: *Having had the procedure and seen the results, would you go ahead with the surgery again?*

**Margot**: Absolutely. I had considered less invasive procedures and had [lip fillers](https://aedit.com/procedure/temporary-lip-fillers) when I was a little younger, but I wanted something more significant now. We spoke to Mary, a director of a multinational company based out of Santa Barbara, who decided to undergo a facelift procedure at the age of 62. “I decided to have the procedure because my life is not that of a 60-something woman, and I didn’t see why I should look like my age if I don’t feel it,” Mary said. “I work in a field where being able to come across confidently is very important so I’d had other minor cosmetic procedures in the past to help me with this, but I needed to go a little further this time to achieve the results I wanted.”

**The AEDITION**: *What questions would you advise potential patients ask their surgeon?*

**Mary**: I think for me the main thing was that I felt comfortable with the surgeon and we were both on the same page when it came to the results I wanted. I did a lot of research about the procedure but my main concerns were about the recovery time. I’d advise that prospective patients ask their surgeon how long they need to set aside to heal and most importantly for me, how long it will take for swelling and bruising to go down enough to be able to run errands without feeling self-conscious. Personally, I was able to leave the house confidently after eight days. I didn’t have much swelling or bruising thankfully.
 
**The AEDITION**: *If you had to give prospective patients one piece of advice what would it be?*

**Mary**: The most important thing for me was to listen to my body. I’m a busy person, so it was really hard for me to be on bed rest for the first few days. Initially, I tried to carry on replying to emails and taking calls, but I quickly found it made me exhausted, as can be expected after general anesthesia. I figured I’d do better to rest fully and get better quicker than push myself and have a drawn-out recovery time. I’d also suggest people use a timer on their phone to schedule taking medication. It’s easy to fall asleep and forget to take them in the days after the procedure when you need them most.
 
**The AEDITION**: *How has the procedure impacted your daily life?*

**Mary**: It has brought me peace of mind to know that I have undertaken a long-term solution to combat signs of aging. If I want a touch-up in years to come I will likely only need a revision [mini-facelift](https://aedit.com/procedure/minifacelift) or [eyelid surgery](https://aedit.com/procedure/upper-eyelid-blepharoplasty) to combat any new loose skin. But, I can honestly say it has made me more confident too. **Christine**: It was a big decision for me. I’d had a few surgeries to treat my illness some years ago so I knew having further elective surgery wasn’t without its risks. Safety was the primary factor for me. Especially having had cancer treatment previously, my practitioner worked closely with my primary care doctor to make sure the procedure was safe to go ahead. I also wanted to make sure the results were natural-looking, and my practitioner and I discussed how they would be able to keep the character of my face, but give me a more youthful contour, which was exactly what I’d wanted.
 
**The AEDITION**: *How did the recovery compare to your expectations?*

**Christine**: The recovery wasn’t so bad. My friends and family helped out a lot with chores and making sure I had plenty of milkshakes and ice. I am retired so I didn't have to fit in my procedure around work schedules but even so, I didn’t have to spend all that much time away from my normal activities. It took six weeks for me to get completely back to normal I would say, but I was able to function well after two weeks. The recovery was not how I expected it, not better or worse, just different. I slept a lot for the first four days, and then gradually started getting better. My swelling was quite severe which I think was hard for my family to see initially, but it went down quite quickly and the pain was manageable which was really the main thing for me.
 
**The AEDITION**: *Do you have any advice for patients considering the procedure?*

**Christine**: The most important piece of advice my friends gave me was to make sure you’re having the procedure for yourself and not because you feel like you need to look a certain way for other people. If you want to feel more confident and the signs of aging on your face are setting you back, then definitely do it, but don’t just do it because you’re feeling pressured for any reason.
