About Steven Pisano, MD
Native Texan, born in Waco and raised in San Antonio, Dr. Steven Pisano attended John Marshall High School here in San Antonio. He is a graduate of University of Texas at Austin where he was enrolled in the Plan II Honors College; he received a Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry. Dr. Steven Pisano received his M.D. in 1985 from the University of Texas Health Science Center-Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He then completed an Internship at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio followed by general surgery training at the State University of New York in Buffalo. Dr. Pisano took his plastic surgery training at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. Following this training, Dr. Pisano spent a year as a Junior Faculty Associate-Microvascular Fellow at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. There he received extensive training in reconstruction of the extremities, trunk, head and neck areas, and especially, in breast reconstruction. Following his fellowship training at MD Anderson, Dr. Pisano founded - along with friend and colleague Dr. Peter Ledoux - Plastic Reconstructive and Microsurgical Associates, PRMA, with the goal of bringing state-of-the-art breast reconstruction to San Antonio and South Texas. Dr. Pisano’s primary area of professional interest is in breast reconstruction with perforator-based autologous tissue. Dr. Pisano has a large body of experience with virtually all types of autologous tissue reconstruction, including: DIEP, SIEA, TUG, SGAP, IGAP, ALT, PAP, and Latissimus Dorsi flaps. In the eighteen-plus years Dr. Pisano has been in private practice, he has amassed a tremendous experience in autologous tissue reconstruction, participating in over 3000 breast reconstruction procedures. Dr. Pisano, and the other members of PRMA, are recognized nationally as leaders in the field of breast reconstruction. The practice now cares for breast cancer patients who come from all over the United States, Canada and Mexico. Dr. Pisano has published articles in peer-reviewed journals and given numerous presentations at local, state, and national plastic surgery conferences. Dr. Pisano has been active in the legislative process at both state and national levels. In 1994, he was instrumental in obtaining insurance coverage for breast reconstruction, testifying before a state congressional committee on the need for and value of post-ablative breast cancer reconstruction. He has traveled to Washington DC to meet with members of the U. S. Congress to stress the importance of patient access to health care, finding a solution to the Medicare sustainable growth rate, and advocating for patient choice in healthcare marketplace. Dr. Pisano is Board-Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He also belongs to the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery, the Texas Society of Plastic Surgeons, and locally, the Bexar County Medical Society. Dr. Pisano has dedicated his training and practice life to the care of the breast cancer patient. He has a personal and professional stake in restoring wholeness and a sense of well-being to women with breast cancer.
