About Shannath L. Merbs, MD
Shannath Merbs, MD, Ph D, FACS is a fellowship-trained oculoplastic surgeon with University of Maryland Eye Associates who specializes in eye and eyelid conditions. Her areas of expertise cover both cosmetic surgery, such as blepharoplasty for eyelid malformation, and reconstructive surgery for tumors of the eye, eyelid and orbit. Dr. Merbs treats diseases within the tissues of the eye, eyelid and eye socket in both adult and pediatric patients. She diagnoses and treats eyelid malpositions, eyelash conditions, the ocular effects of thyroid disease and traumatic injuries of the eyelid and orbit. She also performs dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) surgery and Jones tubes procedures for blocked tear duct conditions. Recent research includes work in Africa to improve the outcome of eyelid surgery for trachoma, the most preventable infectious cause of blindness. Dr. Merbs also has been working to improve the treatment of orbital fractures, thyroid eye disease and orbital tumors by using patient specific-implants, preoperative planning and intraoperative navigation. Dr. Merbs is affiliated with the University of Maryland School Of Medicine’s Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.
