About Robert A. Shumway, MD
La Jolla, CA board-certified facial plastic and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Robert A. Shumway is the Medical Director and chief surgeon at Shumway Cosmetic Surgery. His Joint Commission (JCAHO) certified and accredited cosmetic surgery practice focuses on modern body shaping and facial rejuvenation techniques for both women and men. For more than 20+ years, Dr. Shumway has personally guided each patient in choosing the most appropriate procedures to achieve their cosmetic goals of the face, breast, body, and skin. He is fellowship trained and double board certified (by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology). Dr. Shumway is a diplomate on six medical boards, plus a fellow of both the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (where he was a past president). Dr. Shumway is well-known for performing the transumbilical breast augmentation (TUBA) implant placement technique, which is a unique way of inserting saline breast implants through the navel without scarring the breast. Only a handful of surgeons in the country are skilled at this procedure, and Dr. Shumway was the first surgeon to perform the TUBA in Europe in the summer of 2018. Drawing on his aesthetic talents as an artist and as a master jeweler, Dr. Shumway adds a refreshing dimension to the field of cosmetic medicine. As a trustee of the California Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Shumway stresses the importance of close postoperative care and carefully instructs his patients on how to play an active role in their recovery. Dr. Shumway and his highly trained staff use a variety of techniques and products to accelerate the healing process so each patient can see their results quickly, safely, and with as much comfort as possible. He also continues to perform all cosmetic injectables (wrinkle relaxers and dermal fillers) at his practice. Having studied pre-med and chemistry at Brigham Young University, Dr. Shumway went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. He majored in zoology, had the opportunity to perform laboratory research in their developmental biology program, and graduated cum laude. Before earning his medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine, Dr. Shumway was involved with laboratory research in the department of surgery, working with patients and surgical wound healing. He went on to earn medical degrees in general surgery and thoracic surgery at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Shumway was also honored to have a residency in head and neck surgery, and facial and plastic reconstructive surgery at Duke University Medical Center. As a family man and athlete, Dr. Shumway is known by his friends and family as ""DOCTOR IRONMAN"". With his wonderful wife, Kathy Duke Shumway, they have six wonderful children together. He is avidly health-conscious, and an on-going 140.6-mile veteran Ironman Tri-Athlete and International Triathlon competitor. Not to mention, Dr. Shumway is a PADI-certified scuba diver and a certified Catalina Channel Swim Federation trained observer and physician. In 1975 — 1977, he was a full-time assistant to the England Leeds LDS Mission president, ward and stake executive secretary, a seminary instructor, and an elder's quorum president. He also was trained and certified as a master locksmith through the Foley-Belsaw Institute.
