About Phillip S. Hughes, MD
I have been in the solo private practice of dermatology and dermasurgery since moving to San Antonio. My father and uncle are physicians. I am married to Dr. Jane Hughes,a prominent ophthalmologist who is honored in “America’s Best Doctors.”. Our oldest daughter is a dermatologist and our son Alexander Hughes is an orthopedic spine surgeon in NYC, so we are a “medical” family. Our youngest daughter is a law student. I am a Diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology, a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, a Fellow of the American Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery, a Fellow of the American Society for Mohs Surgery and a Fellow of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery. I am a member of the Texas Dermatology Society. As a compulsive reader of dermatology literature and attending the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology, I keep up to date! My professional interests and specialties include psoriasis (PUVA therapy), Mohs micrographic surgery for skin cancer, laser surgery (pulsed dye laser for port wine stains, vascular defects, hypertrophic scars, keloids, stretch marks; the erbium: YAG laser for resurfacing of wrinkles and acne scars; a long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser for hair removal, leg vessels, facial rejuvenation and thick port wine stains and hemangiomas), cosmetic dermatology including chemical peels, sclerotherapy, Botox injections, filler materials (including Juvederm, Sculptra and micro-fat transfer), and mole management. I still enjoy the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges of medical dermatology. Recent medical publications are “Multiple Miliary Osteomas of the Face Ablated with the Erbium: YAG Laser” (Archives of Dermatology), “Treatment of Molluscum Contagiosum with the 585-nm Pulsed Dye Laser” and “Skin Contraction Following Erbium: YAG Laser Resurfacing” (both Dermatologic Surgery), “Absence of human papillomavirus DNA in the plume of the Erbium: YAG laser” (Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology), and “Treatment of Lymphomatoid Papulosis with Imiquimod 5% Cream” (Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology). I was a speaker at the May 2008 Texas Medical Society/Texas Dermatology Society meeting and a recent American Society for Mohs Surgery annual meeting, talking about “Scar Management in Dermatologic Surgery.” My most current articles include original papers on cold air anesthesia (Dermatologic Surgery) and immunotherapy of lymphomatoid papulosis (JAAD). I have been a speaker at the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, American Society for Mohs Surgery, Texas Medical Association and American Academy of Dermatology meetings. I have given laser seminars for Continuum Biomedical. I am the inventor of the Hughes Dental Laser Shield, Hughes micrographic surgery punch, the insect repellent pitot tube cover (aviation) and keratoderma remedy ointment (dermatologist’s heel and callus ointment). I currently serve on the journal improvement committee of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery. I was a speaker and session director of “Scar Management” at the American Academy of Dermatology meeting in NYC August 2015. I am one of the founders and a board member of Culture Service Growth, a business (inc. medical) consulting and call outsourcing firm providing 650 jobs in San Antonio. I continue my enthusiasm for my chosen professional field of medicine, dermatology!
