About Matthew G. Bindewald, MD

Dr. Bindewald is a double board certified plastic & reconstructive surgeon based in San Antonio, TX. He is well known for his achievements in aesthetic plastic surgery as well as performing complex reconstructive surgeries that have given his patients life-changing return of form and function. Dr. Bindewald performs many cosmetic surgery procedures within the vast scope of the plastic surgery space. These surgeries include customized breast surgeries (augmentation, lift, areola, nipple), gynecomastia (male breast reduction) surgery, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), upper and lower body lift procedures, and liposuction. His reconstructive interests include post-bariatric corrective surgeries (removing massive amounts of excess skin and tissue that carries with it both health risks and cosmetic concerns), breast reduction surgery (as well as a team of experts to work with your insurance company), breast reconstruction after mastectomy (rebuilding entire breasts after they have been removed because of cancer or genetic predisposition to cancer), and facial reconstruction after Mohs surgery (using flaps, skin and cartilage grafts, and other materials to rebuild noses, lips, ears and other critical structures lost from cancer surgery). These surgeries have allowed patients to get their lives back. Many cosmetic plastic surgery patients actually travel to see a surgeon like Dr. Bindewald because they are able to get a very tailored surgical plan instead of having to choose from a cookie-cutter list of services. For patients who are unsure of exactly what they need or want, he is often able to explain surgical possibilities from a ""whole body"" perspective, including what options are available, how a surgery in one area will affect the function of that and surrounding areas, where and how incisions are placed under different scenarios to achieve the best aesthetic result. For patients that may be unsure exactly what they desire when they email us or schedule an initial consultation, they find great relief through his detailed explanations, highly transparent pricing, and completely no-pressure environment. Dr. Bindewald is soft-spoken, thorough, and a highly detailed planner. His passion is in studying the form and function of the body and applying that science to his surgeries so that patients can get the best of both beauty and function. He doesn't encourage patients to do more than they need. If this resonates with you, we encourage you to schedule an appointment or email us any questions you may have. If it doesn't, we would be happy to provide you with a recommendation of some plastic surgeons that may better suit your exact needs and desires. Dr. Matt Bindewald completed his undergraduate training at the University of Colorado, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering with a bioengineering emphasis. From there, Dr. Bindewald returned to his native Hawaii to study medicine at The University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. Following graduation with his doctorate in medicine, Dr. Bindewald complete a residency in general surgery in Santa Barbara, California. He then joined the United States Navy as a general surgeon. It was during his time in the military that he became increasingly interested in reconstructive plastic surgery, seeing the benefits provided to our service members. Upon completion of his military service, the already experienced surgeon moved to San Antonio, Texas to complete an additional three-year residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center. Dr. Bindewald's training in plastic surgery is comprehensive, including reconstructive and aesthetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures. In keeping with his passion for helping patients with complex medical needs, he has built his practice to specialize in plastic and reconstructive surgery of the breast, body, and face. Helping those with issues caused by weight loss, cancer, and trauma. He is also well known for his work with patients seeking cosmetic surgery to improve their appearance and well-being. Dr. Bindewald is active in the industry, and dedicates a significant amount of his time on research into both new advances as well as risks and complications within the plastic and reconstructive surgery. He was asked to present his findings on the ""Early Identification of Mycobacterial Infection in Rhytidectomy (facelift) Patients"" at the Texas Society of Plastic Surgeons annual meeting in 2013 and has recently authored a chapter on nerve and injury repair in the surgical textbook ""Complications of Surgery and Trauma"" (2014). Dr. Bindewald was most recently featured in the May/June 2016 issue of MD Monthly Magazine. He also presented his findings regarding pain control after abdominoplasty at the national American Society of Plastic Surgery meeting in October of 2017.
