Questions and Answers
You will spend 1-2 hours in the recovery room. When you are fully alert and ready for discharge, we recommend you stay in an aftercare facility for a 2-night stay so care can be provided to you around the clock by licensed nurses. Some of our patients prefer to be cared for at home, however. In which case, we can arrange for a private nurse.
Dr. Tehrani may request you visit your primary physician for a check-up and any necessary lab work and x-rays. We will provide you with precise preoperative instructions, and all the necessary prescriptions in advance of your surgery. All aspirin, aspirin-containing products, and anti-inflammatory products must be stopped ten days before and ten days after surgery. We will provide you with a complete list of which medications to avoid. You may take Tylenol during this time, and we will also give you a list of vitamins and homeopathic preparations to take before and after your surgery to promote healing and limit bruising.
After the incision is made in the navel, a small camera is inserted so that Dr. Tehrani can see inside without the need for a larger incision. The saline implant shell is then inserted through a narrow tunnel created under the skin and into the tissues behind the breast, after which it is filled with salt water to the desired size. The transumbilical breast augmentation (TUBA) procedure can be used to place the implants over the muscle or under the muscle. There are advantages to each, and Dr. Tehrani will discuss these options with you during your consultation.
Breast fat injection is usually a one-day procedure, and the recovery time is relatively short. Most patients find that they can return to their daily routines within a week. Of course, it is highly recommended that you avoid strenuous activities for a few weeks. You can expect some soreness, bruising, and swelling in the areas that have had liposuction, and perhaps some tenderness in the breast area as well. We will provide you with complete post-operative instructions, and we can give you pain medication, if needed. But many patients find that the discomfort is minimal and resolves quickly.
An extended tummy tuck is a technique used for those who have significant loose skin in the midsection. This is frequently needed after massive weight loss/post-bariatric surgery. “Extended” refers to the length of the incision. Essentially, the incision needs to extend as far as the loose skin that is to be removed. In this case, the incision may need to extend farther to the sides than in a customary tummy tuck or even 360 degrees to remove loose skin from the back as well. As in the other techniques, excess fat is removed via liposuction, and the muscles of the abdomen are tightened accordingly.
In a mini-tummy tuck, a smaller low incision is made, and the navel is not moved, as in a full tummy tuck. This technique is effective for people who only have excess skin and fat below the belly button. Liposuction is used to remove excess fat, and the abdominal muscles are tightened, if necessary. Because this technique is less invasive, recovery time is less than after a full tummy tuck.
Traditionally, a brow lift was performed through an incision in the scalp that ran from ear-to-ear. This procedure, called the “coronal” approach, is still used occasionally. In most cases, it can be replaced by the endoscopic brow lift, which is less traumatic for the body. The surgery takes 1-2 hours. For this minimally invasive procedure, Dr. Tehrani inserts the endoscope through tiny incisions within the hairline. The camera on the end of the endoscope allows him to remove excess skin and muscle and then tighten the forehead area.
During Otoplasty, a small incision is made behind the ear, revealing the cartilage which is then sculpted, bent into its new position and stitched into place. In some types of ear surgery skin is removed but the cartilage is left in one piece and bent back on itself for a smaller-looking ear. A bandage is wrapped around the head to ensure the new positioning of the ears. To achieve better balance, sometimes otoplasty may be performed on both ears even if only one has a problem. The recovery period is very short, as patients of all ages usually feel back to normal after a few hours, although the ears may ache for a few days.
