About James O. Barlow, MD
Arizona Dermatology Specialists, PLLC is founded by Dr. James Barlow, MD. He is one of a handful of board certified, Mohs fellowship trained dermatologic surgeons in the greater Phoenix Valley specializing in Mohs Micrographic Surgery, laser surgery, facial reconstruction, and cosmetic dermatologic surgery. Dr. Barlow has expertise in the surgical management of skin diseases, skin cancer, laser surgery, and advanced cosmetic techniques performed with local anesthesia. He has performed over 10,000 Mohs surgery procedures and an equal number of facial reconstructions since completing his fellowship training in 2005. Dr. Barlow grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada and attended the University of Arizona where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry. He received his medical degree at the University of Nevada School of Medicine where he was named to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He completed his internship and dermatology residency at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona where he served as chief resident in his final year. His fellowship training in Mohs micrographic surgery, facial reconstruction, and procedural dermatology was at the Medical University of South Carolina. He then went on to complete a second year of fellowship training in advanced facial cosmetic surgery at the California Skin Institute with Dr. Greg S. Morganroth in Mountain View, CA. Dr. Barlow is a Fellow of the American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS), American Society of Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), Phoenix Dermatology Society (PDS), and the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). Dr. Barlow believes in a lifelong commitment to learning, research, and education and continues to publish and present cutting edge research and surgical techniques. He has authored multiple peer-reviewed articles on surgical reconstructive techniques, cutaneous oncology, and cosmetic techniques. In 2006 he was awarded the prestigious Tromovich Award for research on distinguishing melanoma from the normal melanocytes in chronically sun-damaged skin. In his free time Dr. Barlow enjoys spending time with his wife and two young sons, hiking the surrounding desert trails, watching science fiction movies, and winter sports.
