About Hanspaul S. Makkar, MD
Hanspaul Makkar MD, FAAD, FRCPC specializes in the removal of high-risk skin cancers using Mohs micrographic surgery, and reconstruction following their removal. These include basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas and melanomas. In addition, he is also fellowship-trained in Pediatric Dermatology, specializing in the evaluation and treatment of birthmarks, including using advanced medical and surgical for their removal. Dr. Hanspaul S. Makkar earned his B.A. and M.D. degrees from Northwestern University’s accelerated combined Honors Program in Medical Education. He was selected to be a member of the national medical honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA), during his senior year of medical school, recognizing his scholastic achievement. He then completed his medical internship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, a Harvard University teaching hospital, followed by residency in dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco, where he was selected to serve as Chief Resident. He pursued additional years of sub-specialty training in Mohs micrographic surgery and cutaneous oncology in Mountain View, CA and 2 years of pediatric dermatology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco, making him one of only a handful of dual fellowship-trained dermatologists in the world. Prior to co-founding Central Connecticut Dermatology, Dr. Makkar served as Associate Professor of Dermatology, Surgery and Pediatrics at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He also served as the Director of Pediatric dermatology and Pediatric Dermatologic Surgery, the co-director and surgical director of the High Risk Skin Cancer / Transplant Clinic. He also served as the Associate Director of Mohs and dermatologic surgery fellowship, co-director of the dermatology residency surgical curriculum, and the Director of the Pediatric Dermatology section of dermatology residency education. In addition to these clinical roles, he served on the Clinical Competency Committee of the Dermatology Residency, and co-founded the UCONN Chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society. He continues to serve as Associate Clinical Professor at UCONN School of Medicine. Dr. Makkar has authored and co-authored peer-reviewed manuscripts, and has lectured locally, nationally and internationally. He has received numerous teaching awards, including the Dermatology Residency Teaching Award ‘Dr TEACHER’ three times, recognizing his commitment to teaching residents and the Didactic Teaching Award from Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. Dr. Makkar was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family and traveling. Dr. Makkar is board-certified by the American Board of Dermatology, with additional certification in Pediatric Dermatology, as well as the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Mohs Surgery.
