About Gabriele B. Poindexter, MD
I chose to work at Kaiser Permanente because of Kaiser Permanente's great reputation and because specialty care here is integrated into an entire healthcare network of physicians and providers. As we take care of our patients, specialists have access to their medical history, and we can easily communicate to the other healthcare providers involved in their care. This way we can provide better, more comprehensive care to our patients. Kaiser Permanente also emphasizes quality of care over the volume of patients to be seen, so I can spend more time and get to know my patients better. Patients can also actively participate in improving their health at Kaiser Permanente by having direct access to their physicians and taking advantage of many additional programs offered by Kaiser Permanente for wellness. All of these features of Kaiser Permanente healthcare make it unique as compared to the typical private practice. What I enjoy most about dermatology is the ability to improve patients’ quality of life, particularly if they have an acute skin problem. Rashes and other skin problems can be quite alarming to patients when they occur, and we can make a real difference in helping them. Skin can also be a window into internal disease, allowing us to work closely with primary care physicians to catch a new problem or help take care of an existing one. Preventative medicine is also very important in dermatology, as we find and treat any possible skin cancers such as melanoma. I love the fact that I can make people feel better.
