About Erin B. Lally, MD

Dr. Erin Lally is a board-certified, fellowship- trained ophthalmologist who specializes in both medical retina and anterior segment surgery. After studying French and Theology as an undergraduate at Georgetown University, she obtained her medical degree from Thomas Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA. She completed her residency in ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital, also in Philadelphia, where she was trained in the medical and surgical management of cataracts, corneal disease, oculoplastic, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, pediatrics, and retina. She then pursued a Medical Retina Fellowship at the Duke University Eye Center, where she studied under Dr. Scott Cousins, a leading expert in medical management of retinal disease. As a fellow, Dr. Lally participated in clinical and laboratory research and focused extensively on the pathophysiology and treatment of macular disease. She studied the differential effects of anti-VEGF treatment based on fluorescein angiography patterns in patients with diabetic macular edema, and also helped develop a classification and treatment algorithm for age-related macular degeneration based on vascular configurations. While Dr. Lally is fellowship-trained in medical retina, she also specializes in cataracts and anterior segment surgery. Since residency, she has integrated cutting-edge technology into her practice. She has extensive experience with Femtosecond-laser assisted cataract surgery, and was an early adopter of new technologies in multifocal, extend depth of focus, and toric intraocular lenses. Dr. Lally’s unique ability to provide comprehensive ophthalmologic care enables her to attentively address her patients’ refractive and retinal needs. She is an active member of the American Board of Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American-European Congress of Ophthalmic Surgery, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the American Medical Association. Dr. Lally’s enthusiasm for ophthalmology led her overseas, where she participated in outreach programs in Sub-Saharan Africa. While in Kenya and Ethiopia, she spent time lecturing local physicians on retinal diseases and learned the surgical technique of Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS), a form of extracapsular cataract extraction used frequently in the developing world. When not practicing ophthalmology, Dr. Lally is an avid endurance trail runner, bicyclist and mountaineer. She frequently participates in long-distance running races and endurance challenges. She has summited numerous alpine and high-altitude peaks in North America, South America, Europe and Asia. As a senior in medical school, she summited Mount Everest.
