About Benjamin Chong, MD

Benjamin Chong, M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Dermatology at UT Southwestern Medical Center and holds the Anita C. Gilliam, M.D., Ph.D., Professorship in Dermatology. He specializes in general dermatology and has expertise in cutaneous lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, and sarcoidosis. Dr. Chong is Director of the UT Southwestern Connective Tissue Disease Clinic and Medical Director of the Parkland Health and Hospital System Dermatology Clinic. He earned his undergraduate degree at Harvard University and his medical degree at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine internship at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor and his dermatology residency at Henry Ford Hospital, where he served as Chief Resident. Dr. Chong conducts clinical and translational research in cutaneous lupus, an autoimmune and photosensitive skin condition in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. He is the principal investigator of the UT Southwestern Cutaneous Lupus Registry, which contains clinical and historical data and blood and skin samples from more than 300 patients. The registry serves as a foundation for multiple clinical and translational research studies, which include developing outcome measures for clinical trials in cutaneous lupus, investigating serum biomarkers that correlate with disease progression, and deciphering the pathophysiology of cutaneous lupus erythematosus. Dr. Chong has received research funding from the Dermatology Foundation, the American College of Rheumatology, the Arthritis Foundation, the Rheumatology Research Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. He has authored 39 peer-reviewed journal manuscripts and four book chapters. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Dermatology, the Society for Investigative Dermatology, the Rheumatologic Dermatology Society, and the Texas Medical Association.
