About Ariel N. Rad, MD

Dr. Rad’s credentials, results and patient reviews speak for themselves. Princeton (magna cum laude) and Duke University educated, Dr. Rad is a Johns Hopkins trained board certified plastic surgeon and Assistant Professor of plastic surgery there. Dr. Rad has performed thousands of aesthetic facial surgeries and he specializes in minimally invasive, scarless approaches featuring minimal downtime. He is ranked in the top 3 plastic surgeons in DC, has the highest patient ratings across all doctor review websites and has been an invited expert in international conferences teaching his techniques to surgeons from around the world. Dr. Rad’s patients seek to look refreshed and rested with natural results, minimal scars and the least downtime. He has innovated scarless techniques due to his patients’ needs for discretion and hidden evidence of surgery. Dr. Rad has membership with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and he is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Through rigorous written and oral examinations, these national societies have vetted Dr. Rad’s education, training, professional qualifications, surgical competence, and ethical conduct as having met the highest standards in the world. For facial rejuvenation, Dr. Rad specializes in minimally invasive approaches such as “closed” rhinoplasty and mini-incision necklift, the most sophisticated techniques featuring hidden scars and minimal down time. For breast aesthetic work, body contouring and mommy makeover procedures, Dr. Rad’s eye is toward body proportion, hidden scars and beautiful silhouettes. He is one of only 30 surgeons worldwide capable of performing the most challenging microvascular surgeries for breast cancer reconstruction such as the DIEP flap and the love handle flap. Dr. Rad was awarded two Howard Hughes Medical Institute fellowships to conduct research at the National Institutes of Health and Duke University, as well as a three-year grant from the NIH to expand upon his pioneering work at the University of London where he completed a Ph.D. in immunology. While in London, Dr. Rad competed and performed internationally in professional Latin American dance. Amongst tens of thousands of competitors worldwide, he was ranked in the top 38 in the world in 2002. In his aesthetic work, Dr. Rad draws on the principles of artistry that he refined through dance. In 2003, Dr. Rad returned to the United States to enter the training program in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Johns Hopkins. Upon completion of his training in 2009 Dr. Rad joined the full-time faculty at Johns Hopkins as Assistant Professor and Director of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery where he instructed surgeon trainees in state-of-the-art aesthetic and reconstructive techniques. Dr. Rad has published numerous journal articles and book chapters. While at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Rad and his colleagues pioneered microvascular techniques several of which only 50 surgeons worldwide are skilled to perform. Dr. Rad has lectured on his work at international meetings such as in Helsinki, Finland at the World Microsurgery Congress, the American Association of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery. Dr. Rad has published numerous articles and book chapters and he has been named to Who’s Who in America for 2015. Dr. Rad contributes his experience to print and television media and he is a featured medical physician for local news stations, covering a breadth of cutting edge topics in plastic surgery. Dr. Rad is an experienced consultant to writers and editors at newspapers and magazines, from DC Modern Luxury and Capitol File, to the Washington Post and Vogue. Dr. Rad is dedicated to his patients and, with his wife, opened SHERBER + RAD July 2014 to deliver the full spectrum of collaborative care. Together Drs. Sherber’s and Rad’s approach are centered on comprehensive care and patient privacy. Dr. Rad’s top flight technical abilities, paired with a cultivated artistic sense, are the tools through which he is able to achieve noticeable results. He is commended for his skill in microsurgery and facial aesthetic surgery, his nuanced artistic vision and caring manner.
