Questions and Answers
Dr. Olson primarily uses an open rhinoplasty technique as he feels the results are more consistent than the results of the older closed rhinoplasty technique. This approach provides Dr. Olson better access to the underlying nasal structures. There is better visibility during the procedure, which is preferable when reshaping the delicate structures of the nose. An incision is made across the strip of skin separating the nostrils (the columella) this allows Dr. Olson to carefully fold back the skin across the bridge of the nose. The resulting scar is almost imperceptible. This is the technique Dr. Olson prefers for most of his patients.
Dr. Olson provides his patients with guidelines to follow that will help ensure a smooth recovery and great results. He will provide patient comfort tips to relieve discomfort that you may experience following surgery. You will be prescribed pain medication for the first few days of recovery. Avoiding strenuous activity, lifting, or any activity that elevates heart rate or blood pressure during the first 10 days is important. Most patients can return to their normal work and social activities at 10 days. Exercise can be resumed at 10 days at a moderate level.
A nasal surgery performed by a board-certified facial plastic surgeon such as Dr. Olson who specializes in the procedure can last a lifetime. The nose, like the rest of the face, changes over time as part of the aging process, but the fundamental changes made during rhinoplasty will remain. You should keep in mind, however, that the final results of a cosmetic rhinoplasty take up to a year to reveal itself.
Dr. Olson primarily uses 2 approaches for facelift surgery: the short scar or deep plane lift. The techniques differ in the length of incisions required and the extent of surgical correction. Short scar or mini facelifts work well for many younger patients. This technique involves incisions within the temporal or sideburn hairline, extending along the front of the ear and ending just behind the earlobe. Deep plane facelifts are best for people with more significant facial aging. This technique requires an incision that extends from the earlobe around the back of the ear and ending in the hairline behind the ear. The longer incision allows Dr. Olson greater ability to correct the neck.
Dr. Olson performs facelift surgery while you are under general anesthesia with a board-certified anesthesiologist. Depending on the specifics of your surgery, he may make incisions just around your ears or, alternatively, around your ears and behind your hairline. Once he has made these incisions, Dr. Olson adjusts the tissues beneath your skin, moving them upwards and repositioning them to sit higher. He also cuts away excess skin and tightens the remaining skin for a smooth profile and improved definition. Before closing the incisions, Dr. Olson examines your face for symmetry and adherence to your desired outcome. When he is satisfied with the results, he closes the incisions with sutures. After your surgery, you’ll be medically observed while you wake up from anesthesia. Once you’ve been evaluated, you may return home in the care of a loved one.
Dr. Olson performs lip lifts in the office with a local anesthetic. During the surgery, he removes a strip/wedge of skin between the bottom of the nose (below the nostrils) and the top of the lip. The resulting scar is hidden along the natural crease under the nose. When enhancing the corners of the mouth, the incisions are placed on the outer edges of the upper lip.
Dr. Olson will provide adults and children with post-surgical instructions to help make the most of recovery time and create attractive results. He is available to answer any questions that may come up along the way. Patients will need to allow 7 to 10 days for rest, giving any swelling and bruising time to subside. Discomfort in the first day or so can be relieved with pain medication. Exercise and sports activities should be avoided for a few weeks thereafter until the ears have fully healed.
